1st June 2012

Dear Parents Guardians and StudentsOver this term we have had a number of emails into the school congratulating students on their behaviour, leadership or participation in a local event.

Obviously these are great communications to receive, but they are also indicative of the many wonderful and talented young people we have here at Hallam Senior College. Thank you to all those students who live up to our school values and represent themselves, their families and the school in the many and varied ways that they do as they go about their daily lives.

Impending Strike action

Parents will be aware that the teacher’s industrial agreement is currently being negotiated with the State Government. The proposed date for the strike is 7th June. While the school will remain open I will be informing parents by a note to students with what the implications will be for their classes.

Sports Academy

Our Rugby League boys won the State Grand Final last week with a convincing win over Victoria University Secondary College. I was fortunate in being able to go and see the game and observe first hand our boys in action – it was amazing. Congratulations to all the boys, Jamie Fardell and staff. For more information please see our website.

Uniform and the cold weather.

Thank you to students who are in uniform and conducting themselves in a manner that reflects our College values – Relationships built on Respect and Responsibility. Mostly students try to comply with the uniform regulations but winter can be challenging! Can I remind students and parents that our uniform shop is open every Thursday at lunchtime.

Assessment and Reporting and beginning of Semester Two

We are almost at the half year in terms of assessment and preparation for exams. Students must take advantage of every opportunity to succeed.

If there are on going concerns I would like you to make direct contact with me. The relationships we build with our families is critical to the success of school for each and every individual student.

Following exams, students will receive a written report for each subject at the end of term. These reports are distributed to students on the last day of term.

The last two weeks of this term is the beginning of semester two. Students need to be geared up and ready and equipped to learn. These last two weeks of term 2 are a very important foundation for terms 3 and 4.

I encourage all students to follow our recipe:

Come to school... Attend all classes... Set goals... Work hard... Do your best... Achieve.

Global Leaders ConventionSix student Leaders and Miss Brousse went to the Melbourne Convention Centre on Wednesday 23rd of May 2012 to participate in the Global Leaders Convention.

When we arrived we were all split up into groups with students and teachers from right across the state to participate in activities that required leadership and teamwork.

After the fun and games we were seated in a theatre and were given a presentation hosted by representatives of the World Vision organisation with regards to world hunger. The way some families are living in third world countries is a real eye opener; we can only imagine over here in Australia what it would be like to live off of just a few dollars a week with no water coming out of the tap.

The 40 hour famine is a fundraising event which involves giving something up for 40 hours and collecting donations that go to projects that help hungry kids and families around the world.

The 40 hour famine runs between the 17th and 19th of August 2012. To participate in the 40 hour famine, register at www.40hourfamine.com.au.

Thank you to Miss Brousse who organised and supervised for the students to go to the Global Leaders Convention.

Brilliant AttitudeStudent Leaders, High Achievers and Teachers were given a potentially life changing experience from guest speaker, Bob Allwright on Monday 21st of May 2012.

Bob works under the name of Brilliant Attitude which is a not-for-profit organisation that focuses on developing an individual’s or groups own thoughts, feelings, actions and ability to overcome challenges that prevent us to succeed.

Over the day he helped us to recognise the importance of letting yourself come up with meaning to everything instead of following the “sheep” pattern currently in place.

He also explained the differences between the conscious and unconscious minds and how to use them effectively and beneficially.

Possibly the highlight for the day was during the afternoon when everyone broke through their fears that were holding them back from what they want to achieve.

The students thank the teachers; Ms Brousse, Mrs Bowling and Mrs Wittich that organised the day and we would all like to thank Bob Allwright for giving such a brilliant presentation to us all.

Outdoor Education CampOn the 23rd of April our Outdoor Ed class journeyed to Cooper's Creek just north of Moe for an overnight camp.

After we set up camp we went down the river where our instructors taught us the basics of white water rafting. We soon set off up stream. It was a difficult ride up the current and there were plenty of spills along the way. After a couple of hours we made it to our destination, the Chinese tunnel which was created to divert water by early settlers during the gold rush.

As weather conditions continued to worsen we headed back to camp for a well deserved meal and sleep.

With an early start the next morning we quickly packed up camp and headed back to the river for an 8km trip downstream. We battled through pouring rain and the freezing cold through the rapids till we finally made it to the end of our adventure.

The class packed up the boats and rushed to the warmth of the bus for the journey home. The two hour bus ride went quickly and we were all happy to be home.

Assisted Maintenance ProgramHallam Senior College is extremely pleased to announce that we have been included in the Assisted Maintenance Program for 2012.

Several meetings have been held at the school with representatives from the Education Department, the Southern Metropolitan Region and the company being engaged to plan the scope of works and identify priority areas.

The main areas under consideration are the 40 year old roof areas of the original main buildings and the inadequate and significantly deteriorated storm water system. As a result of these meetings, several roof areas will be replaced in a staged response and the storm water drains will be assessed and repaired – works beginning in July this year. These works are funded by the State Government and are received with much gratitude by our school community who have been enduring multiple water leaks which the forty strong ‘bucket brigade’ are struggling to keep up with!

Recent BurglariesHallam Senior College has recently been the victim of multiple burglaries resulting in some computer equipment being stolen.

These invasions have occurred in the early hours of the morning. This has been very disappointing and has significantly disrupted the teaching and learning opportunities of many of our senior Multi Media students and staff. A representative from the Education Department Crime Prevention Unit recently visited the school to offer advice and support.

The Narre Warren Crime Squad has also been assisting us in many ways to improve surveillance and ensure this does not occur again.

If anyone has any information that they feel may assist police with their investigations, please do not hesitate to contact the school or the police directly.

LTQ Engineering ExperienceOn Thursday 18th May, I had the pleasure of visiting Travis Croft, one of my Year 10 'Flight' science students, during his work experience at LTQ Engineering near Melbourne Airport.

Waking up at 4:30am to be at his chosen workplace by 7am was no deterrent to Travis who has a very keen interest in Aviation and Aerospace. LTQ Engineering is an organisation where aircraft jet engines are serviced and overhauled giving Travis a very unique opportunity to gain hands on experience in dismantling and assembling various engine components.

On the day that I visited Travis at LTQ, he had just returned from a test cell facility at Melbourne airport where he was able to stand near and observe one of these engines being tested and run up to full power.

'It was incredible to stand so close and feel the ground tremble when this engine was running.' Travis said.

Travis plans to pursue his interests in aircraft maintenance by undertaking Certificate II in Aeroskills as part of the Aviation and Aerospace program offered at Hallam Senior College.

FYA VisitThe Foundation for Young Australians (FYA) hosted six students from Hallam senior secondary college on Tuesday the eighth of May.

Bruce, Jeremy, Sheldon, Nick, Braeden and Iman upheld the best traditions of Hallam Senior College and took part in a day of meetings aimed at helping FYA understand the needs of today’s youth. They were funny, intelligent, articulate, clever, interesting, respectful, wise and awesome.

They began the day bright and early; travelling from Hallam to the city to make a 9am meeting. After a brief introduction to the “House of FYA” they learned all about some of the initiatives FYA has designed to improve the lives of young Australians.

After drinking designer hot chocolates in a trendy Melbourne café, the crew had lunch with leaders of the community changed with caring for the needs of Melbourne’s youth.

It was then time for a quick tournament on FYA’s Ping-Pong table, followed by the final meeting of the day when the six Hallam crew worked with business leaders to answer the question

“What do young people need to flourish?”

Their answers were insightful, well expressed and impressed all in the room. It was decided that young people need opportunities to find good role models in the older generation and that the older generation need more time so as they can get to know the young; that intergenerational respect is important and pride grows when people are listened too.

These students were a credit to thier school and to young people in general. The Foundation for Young Australians would like to thank Hallam Senior College, and in particular Deborah Batt for taking such an active role in the welfare these students.

But of course the biggest thanks is reserved for Bruce, Jeremy, Sheldon, Nick, Braeden and Iman, your knowledge and good nature made for an amazing day, and as ambassadors for Australia’s youth, you changed opinions and made a difference.

Thankyou from The Foundation for Young Australians

Defence Technical Scholarship WinnerNicholas Mather has been successful in his application for a 2012 Defence Technical Scholarship. This is a prestigious Award and Nick received a letter of congratulations from General Hurley, the Chief of the Australian Defence Force.

During a recent presentation to the Technology and Traditional Trades Sub School Nick met with Warrant Officer Greg Huckstepp who is an Aircraft Maintenance Mechanic – Nick is interested in working in this area also.

Nick with Warrant Officers Greg Huckstepp, Gerry Foran and Rose Schiavello from the Hallam Careers Office where Nick received support with his application.

A Defence Technical Scholarship (DTS) is a fantastic opportunity for Year 11 and 12 students, intending to pursue an ADF general entry technical trade career after completing Year 12. The DTS rewards technically-savvy students for staying on at school and enrolling in specific subjects.

Year 11 recipients will receive $2000, and Year 12 students will receive $3000. Although there is no obligation to join the Navy, Army or Air Force after finishing school, you will be required to tell us why you are interested in an ADF technical trade career as part of the selection process.

The Australian Defence Force

The Australian Defence Force can provide you with trade skills and qualifications under the Australian Quality Training Framework. Not only do ADF personnel receive ongoing education and training, there are great opportunities for career advancement and personal and professional development. You will receive an outstanding salary package, get to travel as part of your job, make loads of great new friends and become a skilled technical trade specialist on some of the world's most technically sophisticated equipment.
