Dear Parishioners, Next time you are pouring pasteurised milk into your coffee, you might like to remember an interesting anecdote: the great French scientist, Louis Pasteur, was travelling by train when a
young university student sat in the same compartment. Pasteur was praying the rosary. Seeing this, the student, who did not recognise Pasteur, scoffed at Catholic faith in general and the rosary in particular, saying that it was infantile compared to ‘grown up’ science. He was embarrassed into silence when someone else entered the compartment, lifted his hat and greeted “Professor Pasteur”, whose greatness was recognised publicly throughout France.
Science is an exercise of human reason investigating the laws of material things. This reason, when it is united to faith, like the two wings of a bird, can fly upwards towards the knowledge of God. A bird with a broken wing can’t get off the ground. When we pray the rosary, the soul’s meditation of reason is united to the contemplation of faith, and we learn the inner meaning of the life of Christ, in the school of the one who knew Him best. Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for us.
Please see below for the latest updates. In Christ, Fr Scot Anthony Armstrong

Mass Availability and Updates FOR MASS BOOKINGS, PLEASE GO TO:
https://annerleyekibinparish.as.me Just a reminder that, in the Ordinary Form of the Mass, Holy Communion is to only be
distributed in the hand. You may prefer to make a Spiritual Communion instead when attending an OF Mass, and a prayer for this is in the Parish Newsletter. Holy Communion is distributed on the tongue at the Traditional Latin Mass.
Mass bookings remain available up to and including September 6th. Bookings are still required for Mass and can be made online.
Due to limited spaces we continue to ask that you preregister for only two Sunday Masses per calendar month.
Every Saturday after 12 noon, however, you are welcome to book in for any remaining Masses that
weekend, and these bookings will not count towards your monthly limit for Sunday Masses.
Confession Confession is available at Mary Immaculate Church:
Wednesday 7:30pm - 8:30pm
Friday 7:30pm - 8:30pm Confession is also available for those booked in for the following Masses:
Monday during the 7:00pm Mass
After 9:00am weekday Masses. In accordance with regulations, names, addresses, and phone numbers of all people attending the church are recorded by a marshal and stored by the parish in case they are needed for
contact tracing purposes. They will be destroyed after 56 days.
Vespers and Benediction
Vespers is the official evening prayer of the Church prayed by priests and religious throughout the world. The Church has long desired and recommended the faithful to attend these Sunday evening devotions. Bookings are required due to capacity limits and can be made by 3:00pm on the same Sunday. Vespers is every Sunday at 5:00pm.
Catholic Enquiry Group The Catholic Enquiry Group has resumed meeting on Tuesdays in the school library (under Mary Immaculate Church), 616 Ipswich Road, Annerley. (Please note change of venue.). For further information about the Catholic faith, or if you interested in becoming Catholic, please come along. For more details please phone Teresa Martin: 0413 763 256 or email [email protected].
In the 10 hundred’s through 12 hundred’s Albigensianism taught that only the spiritual was good and everything material was evil. For this reason suicide and euthanasia were seen as positive and marriage and
having children was discouraged. This strikingly resembles some current thinking. It gained ground against the backdrop of an indulgent and lax clergy.
St Dominic, a Spanish priest, in 1208 sought to correct this heresy. He was experiencing very little success. He retreated to fasting and prayer. Tradition tells us the Mother of God, hearing these prayers, appeared to Dominic and advised him that his lack of success was the result of preaching to barren soil not yet watered by Divine Grace. "Preach the Psalter consisting of 150 Hail Marys and 15 Our Fathers and you will obtain an abundant harvest".
St Dominic did as he was instructed. Promulgation of the rosary helped bring about an end to Albigensianism.
Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass
COVID restrictions are preventing the celebration of the Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass, held
each year at the Cathedral of St Stephen, in the usual way. However, on Saturday 26th September
at the 11.30am Mass, Archbishop Mark will celebrate Mass for the special intentions of all couples
celebrating 50 years or more of marriage. Attendance of Mass at the Cathedral is restricted to 132, if
however, any couple celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary are in good health and wish to
attend the Mass in person, please contact the Cathedral office on 3324 3030 or register on-line via
the Cathedral website: https://www.cathedralofststephen.org.au/mass--reconciliation-times.html
The Mass will be live-streamed via the Cathedral website for those who are unable to attend in
person.

PONTIFICAL HOLY LAND COLLECTION
This year, due to the pandemic caused by the Corona
virus, it was not possible to take up the Good Friday
Collection dedicated to supporting Christians
living here in the Land of Jesus. This is why
Pope Francis has accepted the request to move
this gesture of sharing that concerns the whole
Church to September 13th.
Why September 13th, you may ask? Because it is the
Sunday closest to the Feast of the Exaltation of the
Holy Cross, which we celebrate here with particular
solemnity in Jerusalem. On this feast we remember how
far the love of the Son of God has come for us. This gives
birth to a new humanity founded on solidarity and love.
Please consider a financial gift to this important ministry
on September 13th, or go to: https://myfranciscan.org
SPIRITUAL COMMUNION A spiritual communion is a devotional practice whereby we exercise the mind and heart in desiring to receive Christ in the Holy Eucharist, either as a preparation for participation in the Mass, or when it is not possible to receive Holy Communion. Since Christ himself is the ultimate goal of every human desire, the value of a well made spiritual communion is very great. "When you do not receive Communion and you do not attend Mass, you can make a spiritual communion, which is a most beneficial practice; by it the love of God will be greatly impressed upon you." (St Teresa of Avila, the Way of Perfection, Ch35). St John Vianney taught that making a spiritual communion has an effect like that of blowing on embers to make them flame up again, so the love of God flames up in the heart by means of the spiritual communion. The most generally known form is that of St Alphonsus de Liguori: "My Jesus, I believe that You are truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, please enter spiritually into my soul. I welcome you, I love and adore You, never permit me to be separated from You. Amen."
Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time Year A, 29th/30th August, 2020
MASS READINGS First Reading: Jeremiah 20:7-9
You have seduced me, Lord, and I have let myself be seduced; you have overpowered me: you were the stronger. I am a daily laughing-stock, everybody's butt. Each time I speak the word, I have to howl and proclaim: 'Violence and ruin!' The word of the Lord has meant for me insult, derision, all day long. I used to say, 'I will not think about him, I will not speak in his name any more.' Then there seemed to be a fire burning in my heart, imprisoned in my bones. The effort to restrain it wearied me, I could not bear it.
The Word of the Lord
Response: Thanks be to God
Responsorial Psalm 62 (Said by all)
O God, you are my God, for you I long; for you my soul is thirsting. My body pines for you like a dry, weary land without water.
So I gaze on you in the sanctuary to see your strength and your glory. For your love is better than life, my lips will speak your praise.
So I will bless you all my life, in your name I will lift up my hands. My soul shall be filled as with a banquet, my mouth shall praise you with joy.
For you have been my help; in the shadow of your wings I rejoice. My soul clings to you; your right hand holds me fast.
Second Reading: Romans 12:1-2
Think of God's mercy, my brothers, and worship him, I beg you, in a way that is worthy of thinking beings, by offering your living bodies as a holy sacrifice, truly pleasing to God. Do not model yourselves on the behaviour of the world around you, but let your behaviour change, modelled by your new mind. This is the only way to discover the will of God and know what is good, what it is that God wants, what is the perfect thing to do.
The Word of the Lord Response: Thanks be to God
Alleluia, alleluia! May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten the eyes of our heart, that we might see how great is the hope to which we are called. Alleluia! Gospel: Matthew 16:21-27
From that time Jesus began to make it clear to his disciples that he was destined to go to Jerusalem and suffer grievously at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes, to be put to death and to be raised up on the third day. Then, taking him aside, Peter started to remonstrate with him. 'Heaven preserve you, Lord,' he said, 'this must not happen to you'. But he turned and said to Peter, 'Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle in my path, because the way you think is not God's way but man's.'
Then Jesus said to his disciples, 'If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me. For anyone who wants to save his life will lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it. What, then, will a man gain if he wins the whole world and ruins his life? Or what has a man to offer in exchange for his life?
For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and, when he does, he will reward each one according to his behaviour.
The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ
Memorial Acclamation: Number One We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection until you come again.
