Dear Parishioners, Lent is here and, with this Sunday, goes into full swing. I wonder if any of you have sat with calendar and counted the days of Lent. Funny, from Midnight Ash Wednesday (12:00 AM Wednesday) until Midnight Holy Saturday (12:00 AM Saturday), youd count 46 days. Hey, well, what about the 40 Days of Lent?Is it 40 or 46? In a way, both are right. But there is a subtle piece of arithmetic at work here. See, Sunday is regarded as a sort of, un-Lentday. Technically speaking, for instance, one could excuse himself from the Lenten penance hes chosen. Giving up smoking? You can puff a bit on Sundays. Giving up chocolate? Indulge. Is this a good idea? Ummm, not so much. Its a bit of a cop- out. But, if you subtract the six Sundays of lent from 46, you do, indeed, get 40 days. Thats how the liturgical calendar works. There are two other days during Lent when we can relax our penances: March 19, St. Joseph Day and please, I remind all of you to send in your RSVPs and come to our St. Joseph celebration and March 25, The Feast of the Annunciation. Anyway, St. Joseph Church and all Catholic churches will, for the most part, be clothed in purple up until the Easter Vigil Mass. And, also, until then, there will be no alleluias either. The Extraordinary Form bade farewell to the a-wordat First Vespers of Septuagesima, February 16. The Ordinary Form continued it up until Ash Wednesday. Lent is a period of penance and self denial for all. There are fasting and abstinence rules which we all must follow and there are liturgical rules as well. One of those rules is that there be no flowers on the altar during Lent. Also, the use of the organ, unless its necessary, is not permitted. Another rule is that there is no Gloria at Mass. Lent is a time for all of us to take stock of our spiritual lives and to do our best to put ourselves back on the path to holiness. Its not always a pleasant path, but it is so necessary, my children and my friends. Dear Parishioners,

Lent is here and, with this Sunday, goes into full

swing. I wonder if any of you have sat with

calendar and counted the days of Lent. Funny,

from Midnight Ash Wednesday (12:00 AM

Wednesday) until Midnight Holy Saturday (12:00

AM Saturday), you’d count 46 days. Hey, well, what about the “40

Days of Lent?” Is it 40 or 46? In a way, both are right. But there is a

subtle piece of arithmetic at work here. See, Sunday is regarded as a

sort of, “un-Lent” day. Technically speaking, for instance, one could

excuse himself from the Lenten penance he’s chosen. Giving up

smoking? You can puff a bit on Sundays. Giving up chocolate?

Indulge. Is this a good idea? Ummm, not so much. It’s a bit of a cop-

out. But, if you subtract the six Sundays of lent from 46, you do,

indeed, get 40 days. That’s how the liturgical calendar works.

There are two other days during Lent when we can relax our

penances: March 19, St. Joseph Day – and please, I remind all of you

to send in your RSVPs and come to our St. Joseph celebration – and

March 25, The Feast of the Annunciation.

Anyway, St. Joseph Church and all Catholic churches will, for the

most part, be clothed in purple up until the Easter Vigil Mass. And,

also, until then, there will be no alleluias either. The Extraordinary

Form bade farewell to the “a-word” at First Vespers of

Septuagesima, February 16. The Ordinary Form continued it up until

Ash Wednesday.

Lent is a period of penance and self denial for all. There are fasting

and abstinence rules which we all must follow and there are

liturgical rules as well. One of those rules is that there be no flowers

on the altar during Lent. Also, the use of the organ, unless it’s

necessary, is not permitted. Another rule is that there is no Gloria at

Mass. Lent is a time for all of us to take stock of our spiritual lives

and to do our best to put ourselves back on the path to holiness. It’s

not always a pleasant path, but it is so necessary, my children and

my friends.

2019 Catholic Ministries Annual

Appeal (CMAA) God calls all of us to be Signs of Hope for those

in need in the Diocese of Joliet. The CMAA

supports 30 ministries that benefit so many and

allow us to do God’s work here on earth. Our

parish could not possibly accomplish all that the diocese is able to

when we all work together.

Our parish’s goal for the 2019 CMAA is $18,800. If we raise more

than this goal, 70 percent of the goal will be returned to the parish.

Please prayerfully reflect on how you can best support this year’s

CMAA. You may make your gift using one of our pledge envelopes

available in the church, by returning the pledge card you received in

the mail, by visiting jolietdioceseappeal.org, or by texting “Donate”

to (815) 2051949 to link a donation form from your mobile phone.

Bulletin Articles If you have an article that you would like to be included in our

bulletin, please type and email your announcement to

[email protected] at least 10 days in advance. Father

Magiera must approve all articles. Thank you very much!

40 Days for Life Campaign “Many prolife groups from various Catholic parishes will participate

in the 40 Days for Life campaign. This non-violent protest includes

prayer at the Aurora abortion clinic on six Saturdays, March 9

through April 13. Participants peacefully and prayerfully witness to

the harm that abortion inflicts on the child in the womb, the mothers

seeking abortion and the society that allows such activity. Those who

would like to come and pray for an hour will meet at St. Joseph's

Church in downtown Joliet at 9 a.m. and return around noon.

Carpools will be available. If you have questions, contact

[email protected]. If you need more information about this

campaign go to www.40daysforlife.com.”

“The greatest destroyer of peace today is Abortion because it is a

war against the child" Mother Teresa

Lent began on Ash Wednesday, March 6

1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from

meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.

2. All from the age of 18 years up to the beginning of their

60th year are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good

Friday.

3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full

meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals,

sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to

each one’s needs, but together they should not equal

another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted

on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit

juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would

be seriously affected, the law does not oblige.

4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is

seriously sinful.

5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Church

year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and

follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to

following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a

performance of works of charity and mercy.

6. Those who are sick, pregnant, or nursing, or whose health

would adversely be affected by fasting or abstinence,

should not consider themselves bound by these norms.

First Sunday of Lent – 10 March 2019 Deuteronomy 26:4-10. Psalm 91:1-2, 10-11,12-13, 14-15. Romans

10:8-3. Luke 4:1-13.

Facing temptation. Temptation gets right in our face. It also hides

around the corner. From Eden, down to today. Each of us and all of

us deal with this allurement – even Jesus, who is like us in all things

but sin. We can resist it all, as Jesus did, by faithful adherence to

God who is always faithful.

What will I do to resist the coaxing allurement of what is

tempting me?

How can I pray for help this Lent?

How will I confess faith in God, and not the evil one, today?
