standards for teacher performance, increasing academic expectations for all students and
engaging the community, it is our goal at Washington Irving Elementary School that all

an expanded enrichment program which will include Art Therapy, Counseling Services,
Physical Education, Art and Foreign Language.
In order to maintain safety and security in our school, Irving will reinforce the Chicago Public

your child (ren) will be informed during the first week of school.
Please be sure to familiarize yourself with the contents of this document and review the
policies with your child (ren).
As a member of the Irving School Community you are welcome to participate in school and
classroom activities. If you wish to volunteer please see the office staff for the necessary
forms. We hope that you will share your time, talent and suggestions for improving our
school community relationship. We look forward to seeing you at school activities, meetings,

ACADEMIC PROGRESS
Report Cards are issued 4 times a year at weeks 10, 20, 30, and 40. Progress reports are
generated at weeks 5, 15, 25 and 35. Parents are also encouraged to monitor student academic
progress and attendance through CPS Parent Portal. If you need your child’s ID number, please
contact the main office at 773-534-7295 X 86943.
AFTER SCHOOL/BEFORE SCHOOL PROGRAMS
Irving offers opportunities for students to participate in before and after school programs. Sports
and academic enrichment are just a few of the programs available. Permission Slips will be sent
home if your child is involved in any before or after school programs. No child is allowed in the
building before or after school hours without approval by the Principal or Principal’s
designee. If your child has permission to go to a classroom prior to the start of school, he/she
MUST have a letter in hand from the teacher. If your child has younger siblings, other
arrangements need to be made prior to participation in the program. Appropriate behavior and
academic standing are required for participation in all before and after school programs. No
Children are allowed in the building before 7:15 am.
ATTENDANCE
Attendance and achievement go hand in hand. As such, all students must attend school daily. If a
student is going to be absent, the parent/guardian must call the school before 7:00 a.m. to inform
the school of their child’s absence. Upon returning to school after an absence, students must
have a note from their parent or guardian stating the reason for absence. The note must be
submitted to the teacher. In order to be considered an excused absence, the note must
indicate one of the valid causes listed below. Students will be given adequate time to complete
homework assignments missed due to an absence. For example; if a student is absent for two
days, upon their return the student shall be given two days to complete the homework assignment
or a determined amount of time by the teacher.
Valid causes of absence are as follows:
Illness
Observance of a religious holiday
Death in the immediate family
Circumstances which cause reasonable concern to the parent or legal guardian for safety
or health of the student (the reasonableness of the parent’s or legal guardian’s concern is
subject to evaluation by the principal or principal’s designee.)
7
AUTOMOBILE PICK-UP AND DROP-OFF
During pick-up and drop-off, park your car in the cul-de-sac on Campbell Parkway, located next to
the school. It is against the law to double-park your car. A severe safety hazard is created
when cars are double-parked while other vehicles are trying to pass. At no time should a child be
encouraged to cross in the middle of the street to reach a waiting vehicle. Once children leave the
school property, we are not responsible for their safety. Also, once children are dropped off in the
morning, they may not leave the school grounds. Please do not drop your child off early in the
morning it is dangerous for them to stand outside by themselves. Remember: Pick up and
drop off at cul-de-sac. Students should not arrive to school prior to 7:00 a.m.
BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS:
No birthday celebrations in the classroom.
BOOKBAGS, PURSES, ETC.
Backpacks*, purses, and other such items are to be left in the classroom. They may NOT be
carried around during the school day. This is for the safety of ALL students, parents, staff, and
school guests and is a part of the School Uniform Policy. Disciplinary action will be taken when
necessary. NO exceptions will be made. *Backpacks may be carried for departmentalization of
grades 6-8.
BOOKS AND INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
Instructional materials (i.e., computers, textbooks, library books, calculators) are provided in the
classroom for students. These instructional materials are used every day by all students and are
the property of Irving School. If materials are lost or destroyed, parents are responsible for
replacing the items. Notification will be sent home regarding replacement costs.
BREAKFAST AND LUNCH PROGRAMS Students have received a Lunch Application for Free or Reduced Lunch. Please complete it as
soon as possible and return it to school. Each completed application could result in increased
funds for the school. Please fill out a form even if you are not sure if you qualify. Breakfast begins
at 7:15 a.m-7:30 a.m. The only exception is for students who ride the bus.
CAFETERIA
Food and beverages may NOT be removed from the cafeteria. Food cannot be delivered to the
school from restaurants during the student’s lunch period. Additionally, no soft drinks are
allowed. Appropriate behavior is expected in the cafeteria. If rules are broken, students may be
referred for detention.
If your child has food allergies, please complete our Student Medical Information Form.
8
CELLULAR PHONES
The staff of Irving School share parental concerns for the safety of children. If you wish for your child to
have a cellular phone, the office must have a complete Official Request for a Cellular Phone form on file.
Students MUST keep their cellular phones turned off and kept in backpacks at all times. Cellular devices
found in students’ pants or jacket pockets will be confiscated. If your child’s cellular phone is
confiscated, it must be picked up by a parent on FRIDAYS ONLY. A second infraction will
lead to a longer (month) confiscation of the cellular phone. Washington Irving Elementary School
is not responsible for lost or stolen cell phones.
As always, students will be allowed to make phone calls in the office upon request. In case of a
medical, family, or other emergencies please call the main office at (773) 534-7295. Cellular
phones are not permissible during field trips.
The following is stated in the Chicago Public Schools Student Code of
Conduct:
Group 1-6 (3) or more tardies per semester = Detention
These acts of misconduct include those students behavior that disrupt the orderly
educational process in the school or on the school grounds, such as the following:
3-11 Possession of cellular telephones without the prior permission of the Principals.
Upon written request from a parent or legal guardian, a principal may authorize a
student to possess a pager or cellular phone for medical and other family emergencies,
or for any other good cause. A denial of authorization for possession or use of pagers
or cellular phones may be reviewed by the Chief Area Officer.
Group 3 – INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIORS
3-3 ~ Fighting (Zero Tolerance)
3-10 ~ Bullying Behavior (see CPS Student Code of Conduct)
9
CHANGE OF ADDRESS
Please notify the school office immediately when there is a change of address, home or office, cell
telephone number, or emergency information during the academic school year. This is extremely
important in locating you in case of an emergency. This information is needed for the health and
safety of your child. Unlisted phone numbers will be kept secure to ensure anonymity. If mail is
returned to school more than once, residency must be verified.
Classroom Observation (Parents Responsibilities)
Parents may observe in their child’s classroom at times mutually agreeable to the parent, teacher,
and administration. Parent must receive written permission from administration for classroom
observations. School administration should be informed in writing about the proposed visit, the
purpose of the visit, and the approximate duration of the visit.
CHILDREN LEFT STRANDED PROTOCOL
Historically, we have been faced with the dilemma of what to do with children who have not been picked up
from school by the close of our business day, or who have no one to meet their bus. When a student is
stranded, because a parent, guardian, or emergency contact does not come to pick him/her up, or a
responsible adult is not available to meet the bus, specific procedures must be followed. “If the parent,
guardian, or emergency contact does not come to the school to pick up the child by 4:30 p.m., the school
will be obligated to call the Chicago Police Department and the Department of Child and Family
Services Hotline to report child neglect.” We will leave the same voice message with all emergency
contacts.
CROSSING GUARD
A crossing guard is stationed at the corner of Polk and Oakley for a limited period of time before
and after school. Parents are asked to support The School Safety Plan by instructing children to
leave the school grounds while the crossing guard is present. Children should never be
encouraged to cross in the middle of the street, even if an adult is waiting on the other side.
The crossing guard is an employee of Chicago Police Department. Any concerns regarding
the Crossing Guard should be directed to the Chicago Police Department.
DETENTION
Students may be detained after school for disciplinary, tardiness, and conferencing purposes.
When this is necessary, a one (1) day (or more) notice (see below) will be given in order that the
parents may arrange for the student’s transportation. The staff member issuing the notice will
establish the number of detentions to be served. Repeated detentions and/or in-school
suspensions may result in out of school suspension. If a student misses detention, that detention
will double. 3 tardies will constitute a detention.
Detention will be held Monday - Thursday for 1 hour.
10
DISCIPLINE
To promote desirable student conduct and behavior, the Student Code of Conduct has been
adopted by Chicago Public Schools. The code recognizes that Chicago Public Schools have the
responsibility for ensuring that the school environment is safe for all students. All students enrolled
in Chicago Public Schools are expected to accept responsibility for their actions and behavior.
Those who are found in possession of illegal drugs, firearms, look alike weapons or other
dangerous weapons, or those who commit acts of misconduct which seriously disrupt the orderly
educational process, will be suspended immediately, and /or face possible expulsion. The School
Safe Zone is 2,000 feet in any direction from the school property lines. Please review the parent
and student rights and responsibilities in the Student Code of Conduct book.
In addition to the Student Code of Conduct, six rules have been adopted as the Irving Discipline
Code. Appropriate behavior is necessary for students to learn and work together.
Be ready for class (have supplies and homework ready).
Follow all staff directives.
Complete assigned tasks and turn them in.
Be in the right place at the right time.
Respect yourself, staff and school property.
No copying, no cheating, and or plagiarism.

the nearest exits and the procedures for evacuating the building.
Disaster drills are conducted to instruct students in the proper way to take cover in the building in
case of a disaster, such as a tornado. Please talk to your child about the importance of listening to
directions during these drills. Your child may be with someone other than his/her classroom
teacher when the emergency alarm sounds and he/she must know to listen carefully and remain
with the adult.

The REQUEST FOR EMERGENCY INFORMATION forms are used to contact family members in
the event of an emergency with your children. School staff will call the parent or emergency
contact listed on the Student Emergency Form. Please be sure to fill out and return a form for
each of your children, with reliable and current contacts information, so we may be able to contact
you as quickly as possible. * Must be completed the first week of school.

school. If Irving must be evacuated during the school day, the children will be walked to Crane
High School. Call (773) 553-1000 to find out about school closings.

signal the need to consult a medical professional. Screening of vision and hearing is provided at
select grade levels and also with a referral. When problems are detected, it is up to the parents to
follow through with treatment, prescriptions, glasses, or other recommended action. There are

HOMEWORK: What are the benefits of homework to children?
Responsibility ~ completing homework every day, at the same designated time, helps
develop responsibility and prepares children for the increased expectations they will face as
adults.
Reinforcement ~ Homework helps children understand that learning doesn’t stop when the
school bell rings, and provides them the opportunity for added practice with the support of
family.
Self-esteem ~ Children learn self-esteem by gaining new insights and furthering their
knowledge of the subjects being studied in school. The added reinforcement allows
students to feel empowered and confident, and ready to tackle new challenges.
Accomplishments ~ taking pride in homework assignments help children experience the
satisfaction of a job well done.
Achievement ~ Failure to complete homework assignments may result in lower grades.
14
“Please review your child’s homework assignment on a daily basis”

Washington Irving Elementary
School Guidelines for Volunteer Field
Trip Chaperones Thank You for Your Support! At Washington Irving Elementary School, we believe that field trips provide a valuable educational
experience for students. The students’ experience “being there” and they are better able to connect
their current learning to past and future experiences. Field trips increase student knowledge and
understanding of a subject and add realism to the topic of study. Without the help of volunteer chaperones, most field trips would
not be possible. Thank you very much for giving your time and support to these important activities.
In order to help ensure that school-sponsored field trips result in safe and rewarding experiences for all participants, we have
prepared these guidelines to provide information about volunteering as a field trip chaperone.
Guidelines for Volunteer Chaperones
Prior to the field trip, the classroom teacher or trip coordinator will provide you with information regarding the activities planned
for the trip, expectations for supervising students, and emergency procedures. In addition, the following general guidelines will
help you effectively perform your duties as a chaperone. If you have questions regarding these guidelines, please speak to the
teacher or principal.
In order to comply with school policy, before or during the field trip, chaperones:
• Prior approval required to chaperone a class field trip
• Always – Safety First!
• You are in charge of someone’s precious child! Treat them like GOLD!
• May not use profanity, tobacco or alcohol in the presence of or within the sight of students
• Never leave your students unattended.
• Do not ask about or plan on bringing a sibling or other children.
• Treat your small group like a team.
• Adhere to cell phone guidelines. Only use the phone to contact the teacher or other chaperones. Please do not
use it for personal calls during the TRIP.
• Bring an empty backpack – you may end up carrying all of the lunches.
• Do not visit the gift shop!
• Check Washington Irving photography rules. Some children are not allowed to have pictures taken of them.
• Watch the clock!
Parents you can do it! Do not be afraid to ask for help!
Respectful,

TARDINESS
Tardiness is disruptive to everyone in the educational process. Students who are tardy must report to the
office for a tardy slip and proceed immediately to class. Detentions are given for every three (3) tardies.
Failure to serve detention will result in a one day in-school suspension. Repeated detentions and
or in-school suspension may result in out of school suspension, and loss the privilege to attend
school functions and activities (i.e., Halloween Dance, Homecoming Dance, Spirit Week, etc.).
Students are considered tardy at 7:31a.m. (See Student Code of Conduct Handbook)
SAFETY
All visitors must enter at Main entrance on Oakley. Students and staff are unable to open any side door.
STUDENT FEES:
Each year, we spend considerable time reviewing all aspects of student fees and charges.
Given the economic times and consideration for our parents and students, the LSC has
authorized the administration of student fees. Students’ fees for the 2015 – 2016 school years
