Does this information support the prediction. * Open the front cover. Ask a child to point to where we should start reading and where to go to next i.e. in which direction. * Read the story. Use a pointer to encourage one-to-one correspondence. For the first few pages pause for prediction after ‘so they sent me’. Lift flap. Read description e.g. ‘He was too big’. * For the rest of the book read description before lifting flap so that children can use clues in the text as well as the picture to support prediction. Encourage different suggestions. * Draw attention to and read print on the pictures. * Encourage the children to recall and respond to the ideas of the story by doing the following. * Display the first page ‘I wrote to the zoo….’ * Read it together. Introduction

* Display sentence written on a strip of card ‘I wrote to the zoo to send me a pet’.

* Ask the children to read the sentence. * When they have finished ask the question: ‘What did they send

you?’ * Encourage the children to respond by giving the name of one of

the animals in the book or one of their own suggestion. This should be quick and pacy.

* Display ‘They sent me…..’ written on a strip of card. Read together. Tell the children that when they answer your question they must answer using this sentence beginning.

* Model how this should be done. * Continue the game. Draw attention to the key sentences by

pointing as the children read/say the words. * Choose one animal from the book. Scribe name on card and

insert at end of sentence. Read. Discuss omission of a or an. Insert correct word a or an written on card into sentence.

* Display word cards for names of animals contained in book so that children can insert into sentence during practice segment.

Practice Segment

Tasks

* Children draw pencil sketch outline of animal sent by zoo. They should write name of animal or complete cloze.

They sent me ____________.

* Working in pairs use animal name cards to complete and read sentence.

Plenary

* Children display and read sentences to the rest of the class.

Sentence card, small pieces of card and Blu-Tack or Post-Its.

Animal name cards.

Paper pencils, cloze. Animal name cards, sentence strips.
