My story is Dearborn's story. I became a successful Realtor, raised a family and helped develop many of the youth recreation activities that still thrive today. I'm running to become Dearborn's Mayor because we need a well-rounded leader with integrity and I believe now is the time for bold leadership. As a trustee of the school board, I managed a budget larger than the City of Dearborn’s with significantly more full-time employees. COVID-19 faced us with tough choices. I stand by the decisions I made. Not one parent, teacher or student died from community spread in our schools. That's leadership.

I believe in a vision of One Dearborn. My campaign promotes a message of inclusion, diversity and respect for all residents. A big part of valuing diversity is listening to people. As Mayor, I would ensure listening is embedded into every decision-making process within our city. However, Dearbornites are not as different as we think. Whether at backyard tea parties on the West End, or barbecues on the East End, I have heard the same things brought up over and over again by residents. They want an active, lively mayor. They want a safe, clean city with vibrant downtowns, beautiful parks and excellent services. They also want a fiscally responsible government.

I believe that our city's budgeting for parks, recreation, cultural and arts activities need to be increased. I also want to increase activities for our youth and ensure our city's vibrant historical, cultural and culinary attractions receive the attention they deserve. I would support this increase through a combination of grant funding from non-profits and corporations, in addition to finding operational efficiencies throughout the city budget.

I am serving my second term as the City Council president. I was born and raised in Dearborn, and now raising my three children with my husband. I have been a Dearborn attorney for over 17 years, representing many Dearborn families and businesses. I am co-chair of the Dearborn Education Foundation and chair of the Local Community Stabilization Authority. I’m running for Mayor because I have worked diligently as Council President to tackle tough challenges and forge solutions that work for all of us and I know that I can accomplish more as Mayor. I am confident that with my leadership, institutional knowledge, municipal experience and passion, Dearborn can thrive.

My record as Council President is proof of my unyielding commitment to every resident in Dearborn, regardless of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or neighborhood. If elected, I will continue to represent every part of our diverse Dearborn, including and engaging folks from across our city in the governing process so each and every person who calls Dearborn home will have a voice, access, and support. As Mayor, I will also actively recruit and appoint qualified Dearborn residents with diverse backgrounds and different parts of our city to serve on our boards and commissions. Moreover, I will build a diverse administration team that is reflective of our City.

If elected as Mayor, I will work to identify and reduce wasteful spending, conducting a line-by-line review of the city budget to remove any excess spending and find ways to deliver city services more efficiently. With the assistance of lean consultants, I will work to reassess each department’s funding levels, building a new budget vertically from the ground up instead of our horizontal model. I plan on investing more in technology to improve customer service. I will establish a Grants and Developments team which will be tasked with identifying grant opportunities for Dearborn. I will also work with state and federal partners to earmark more dollars to the City.

Education: I have earned a bachelor’s in science from the UofM-Dearborn, a master’s in public health from the UofM-Ann Arbor, and an MBA from U of M-Ross.

I am currently serving my 3rd & final term in the Michigan House of Representatives. As a proud son of immigrant parents, I learned the value of hard work & community. During my time in Lansing, I was recognized as an economic development champion for my work supporting small business, a healthcare champion of hope for my work to increase access to quality care, & a leader in the fight to protect our land, air, and water. From volunteering at community cleanups to raising awareness for mental health conditions, I have consistently given back to the community that fostered my growth & success. As Mayor, I will always prioritize Dearborn and fight for working families.

As Mayor, I will ensure my administration reflects the diversity of Dearborn. We will make resources available in multiple languages, hold town halls & coffee hours across our city, and meet people where they are - that is accessible leadership. I believe we can build stronger bridges of understanding across racial & ethnic lines - finding new ways to come together and celebrate our diversity. While canvassing across our city, we have heard that people feel as if their neighborhood does not receive the same attention and resources as others do. As Mayor, I will ensure equitable resources across the board, and improve transparency in city operations.

Presently, the city of Dearborn levies some of the highest local taxes in Wayne County because our city’s leadership has relied on millage increases to support Dearborn’s overall budget. In order for Dearborn to prosper and compete with neighboring communities, we must find a solution that brings relief to its families’ pockets while supporting them in the process. My team and I have thought carefully about how to maintain Dearborn’s current budget without increasing property taxes and ensure that all city services and long-term infrastructure projects are carried out. I have been here my entire life. From my childhood days in East Dearborn, to my graduation from HFCC, Fordson, & U-M, to building a number of highly successful businesses, this city has always been at the center of my life. With my wife Denise of 39 years, we raised our two sons, James and Michael, right here in Dearborn. And now we have three grandkids we adore too! I'm running to lead Dearborn into a new era of prosperity. We need to build on the progress that has made our community the best in Michigan. This means keeping our public safety strong by retaining Chief Haddad, as well as implementing innovative solutions to make more streamlined and smarter.

My campaign motto has always been: Diversity. Unity. Prosperity. At different times in our history, various immigrant communities have made Dearborn their home. My father’s parents came here from Italy to work for Ford Motor Company for $5.00 a day. Denise's parents came here from Italy as well, just a few years before she was born. Over the years, Polish, German, Italian, Irish, Lebanese, Yemeni, Palestinian, Syrian, and Iraqi immigrants have further developed our city and transformed Dearborn into a beautiful place to live and work. And we should celebrate that! Let’s bring everyone together. Let’s celebrate our diversity. Let’s unite.

Dearborn has always been known for our great services, like police, fire, pools, libraries, and so on. Many of the career politicians say we cannot cut property taxes without cutting services. This simply isn't true. I have introduced a "Resident Rebate Program" where residents can get a tax break when they spend money in our small businesses. We can secure economic grants to build this and other programs. We need to make the pie bigger and save where we can. How does this happen? Streamline services. Build more housing. Attract new business. Create resident incentives.

I served four terms on City Council, having served a total of 16 years on council holding the offices of Council President, Council President ProTem and Councilman. Additionally, I served 2 years on The City Plan and City Beautiful Commissions. I have been a strong advocate for neighborhoods, public safety and for a robust economic development in our business corridors. On each of these issues, I have provided more than a vote; I have provided leadership and action. I believe that Dearborn's best days are still ahead of us, but the times require electing a Mayor that can lead with energy, enthusiasm, values and with vision. I hope you will join me in that effort.

The best way to foster community among residents is to involve as many people as possible in the issues that matter to one another. Let us listen to and talk with each other more often, because we each have a stake in making Dearborn the best it can be. Our diversity, too of course, strengthens us; and, I am proud of it. People from around the world, 72 or more nationalities, call Dearborn home. I also believe that we have far more in common amongst ourselves than otherwise. I strongly feel that the best way to get along and make the most of our diversity is to simply respect one another.

The Budget has challenges, transparency must be paramount. The Budget impacts every citizen and area of the city, so to make a blanket statement that promises a complete budgetary overhaul without first knowing the impacts is irresponsible. As mayor, I will utilize my almost two decades inside the city along with my outside business knowledge to determine what makes the best sense to move the city forward. Providing services is what the city does and the function of municipal government. Grant funding, corporate partnerships, cost sharing with other governmental or municipal entities must be explored in order to maintain a balanced budget.

I am a firm believer that we have to be the change that we want to see. I came to Dearborn in the Fall of 2016, as a pioneer resident artist in Eastborn's Old City hall. During my time here, I've done extensive research and studies on the history of our city. I am running to reverse the reputation of racism that this city has represented for many decades. I am running to initiate the shift to net zero emissions for our city. I am running because it's time for millennials to step up into leadership positions, and guide us through this new decade! I decided to run because I know exactly what this city needs. Innovation, young energy, excellence, and inclusion!

When the city of Dearborn elects me as their 7th mayor, we will reach the next level of progress to become as inclusive representative government. As a young African-American woman, we are the most underrepresented groups, and I think it's time we change that! As mayor, I plan to engage with EVERYONE in our city, and encourage all of our citizens to exercise civic participation. For too many years, there have been the same old people in government, and we will diversify EVERY DEPARTMENT, over the next 4 years.

Our libraries need funds. Our schools need funds. The police can be defunded. We can build attractions that will provide our city with funds. We can secure funds from many various sources, but only with the right leader to represent the change our city is headed in. the money will come.

Education: B.A. degree in political science from the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

I have served Dearborn in positions of responsibility and leadership for most of my life. After working as editor of the Dearborn Press & Guide, I served as Dearborn’s State Representative, and then on the Wayne County Commission, where my colleagues elected me Chairman. I was raised and educated in Dearborn, graduating from Edsel Ford and earning a degree in political science from University of Michigan-Dearborn. I am running for Mayor to put my experience to work for residents and the city that provided a great home to my family over 60 years. I have the experience and background to keep Dearborn a great place to live with whatever challenges are ahead.

We will examine and refine hiring and recruitment processes to make sure our city workforce represents our diversity, including our police officers. In 20 years of holding public office, I have been a leading advocate at the state and county levels for our diverse community, particularly the Arab and Muslim communities. This is reflected in public policy I have enacted, in bridging communities in the wake of Sept. 11, 2001, and in taking public positions supportive of causes like the Campaign to Take On Hate. I have likewise advocated for our senior citizens, and been active with Dearborn Public Schools. My record shows that I will be a mayor for all of Dearborn.

During the transition between the election and taking office, we will do a top-to-bottom review of operations and comparisons with other cities to determine where we might be able to cut some funds in order to expand in needed areas elsewhere. Our goal will be to accomplish what’s needed with existing revenues. But our financial situation is always fluid. We can increase revenues to a degree with aggressive recruitment in business areas and some expansion of housing, but any meaningful boosts in revenues will require serious conversation within the entire community, to reach consensus on what we want Dearborn to be and how we fund that.

Ziad Abdulmalik

Occupation: Small Business Owner

Education: Dearborn public Schools k-12 Henry Ford Community College

I am 34 years old, lifetime resident of Dearborn and a small business owner . I was recruited during college to work for a logistics firm, which had annual revenues of under 300k and turned them around and generated revenues between 3-4million dollars within the first year. I know how to cut wasteful spending, mismanaged funds, and motivate employees. Community involvement- City Beautiful Commissioner (Chair of the business subcommittee) tree plantings/donations, food drives, park and city clean ups, citizen advocate, fought/fight against pollution form the steel mills and oil refinery's. I am running for the betterment of the community in every way, shape, and form

yes, I would support an oversight committee if that were what is asked for by the residents. I believe while the Dearborn police department does an exceptional job, trust needs to be instilled with everyone in the community. With a citizen’s oversight committee in place, there will be more transparency and bring more community involvement. An oversight committee would not be in place to complicate an officer’s already difficult job, but to have residents involved and to gain more trust. We have a great police department and I believe we are an example to other communities.

we need more money for our parks and pools, and to reopen our former health department. Money from the police budget needs to be reallocated to help citizens with mental health issues. Having officers certified to handle mental health issues during 911 responses will reduce the amount of complaints/lawsuits by residents and visitors against police officers. I will work with the mayor to receive federal grants to train and certify the police department in these areas.

As a third-generation, lifetime, Dearborn resident I believe leadership and experience are required now more than ever! With 20 years of City Council experience, decades of experience as a CPA, Chief Financial Officer, and community service throughout Dearborn I bring the right mix of knowledge, dedication, and service to the Council. I will continue to strive for the highest quality city services, maintain Police and Fire staffing levels, and watch out for each resident and every neighborhood in the City. I am committed to serving my Hometown so that you and your family have the same opportunities and service I had growing up in Dearborn. Graduate of Fordson High.

I remain open-minded to all new ideas and creative solutions to community issues. I am committed to continuously improving our City, while we adhere to the City Charter and State Regulations. This also means respecting the separation of powers for the local branches of government, and the Mayor’s duties and administrative responsibilities. All of which in my opinion is very important to a successful government. Advisory committees play a very important role in Dearborn’s government, however, the elected officials must always have the political will-power to make the changes, improvements, difficult, and many-times “unpopular” decisions. I will "get the job done"!

Some changes should be implemented by the Mayor to improve the service model and reduce costs with technology. Streamlining processes, encouraging online “self-service”, and finding the right balance of quality service, public safety, and amenities throughout our community. Each neighborhood in the City has unique characteristics, needs, and wants to balance with taxes and revenues. Prioritizing the service mix and balancing the budget is one of the most important duties of a council member. My professional experience as a CPA, 20 years as elected City Councilman, and in-depth understanding of community interest make for a great fit on the next Council. Vote 4 Bob!

Education: Wayne State University, B.A. Wayne State Law School, Juris Doctor

I'm an attorney and a lifelong Dearborn resident. My father immigrated from Lebanon, and found a good union job that enabled him to raise three children. My mother is a proud homemaker, and third generation Dearbornite. While in law school, I volunteered at a non-profit that assisted unemployment claimants, and worked at Wayne State's Civil Rights Clinic where I fought for an accessible society for disabled people. Since graduating law school, I have worked at a civil rights and employment firm, contributed to an environmental cleanup suit, and most recently fought for the rights of personal injury victims.

Yes, I have been advocating for the establishment of this committee to City Council for the last year, and it is a central part of my platform. Common sense accountability measures and transparency make our residents and visitors to Dearborn safer, and not less safe. Any oversight commission must be truly independent--both from the influence of the police department itself, and from political pressure. The commission must also be funded, preferably at 5% of the entire police budget. The commission also must have the authority to investigate, to subpoena witnesses and evidence, to discipline officers, and to issue police recommendations at the departmental level.

Since 2011, annual spending on police and fire has increased by $20 million, while tax revenue has only increased by $4 million. All other departments have incurred significant cuts. Today, Dearborn spends $8 million more on just police and fire than all revenue generated by the entire operating millage, and that gap is only worsening. In 2021 alone, Dearborn will increase spending on these two departments by $3 million, the equivalent of 0.8 mills. This is the direct result of Dearborn being the only city in Michigan to have minimum staffing requirements for its police and fire departments. I would shift to demand based staffing based on data and calls to service.

Saeid Mashgari Alawathy

Occupation: Accountant

I am running for City Council because I have the skills that are necessary to prepare Dearborn for the next decade. As an accountant, I have prepared income taxes for thousands of families over the past 20 years. Combined with my other experiences, my expertise as an accountant best prepares me to address the budget challenges that we address immediately to prepare itself for the future. I have worked to provide employment services for those with mental illness diagnoses, helping them obtain competitive work in the community. Apart from that, I am Traffic Commissioner, a board member at a local mosque, and a founding member of the American Muslim PAC.

I would be in favor of a citizens’ oversight committee for the police department if it was done correctly. The process of establishing this committee would have to involve activist and civilian input as well as input from the police department. The goal of such a committee should not be to punish the public safety officers in our community. Rather, we should focus on developing an environment of safety in this city in collaboration with those who bravely defend us.

Dearborn’s budget problem is clear. We have a great number of unfunded liabilities where we can make significant progress if we take steps to pay that debt down immediately. This means re-evaluating the way that we provide services in our city as well as pursuing bold ideas for investment in small and growing businesses. As far as services, I would like to explore regional collaborations to implement some cost-sharing with neighboring communities. I will work with our next Mayor to develop efficiencies in other departments of the city government as well. My experience as an accountant best prepares me for that work.

No. Although citizen oversight committees can help provide more transparency in certain situations, I worry about the dangers of competing public ambitions that may attempt to assume charge and unfairly influence proceedings.

A large focus of mine would be to help move our City into the 21st century by investing in the necessary technology to streamline City services and make governing more accessible to the masses. I will work with the administration to identify excessive spending in the budget and find ways to eliminate it while working towards forging new, creative, and meaningful solutions that will bring in additional revenue.

My name is Erin Byrnes, and I am running for re-election to Dearborn City Council to enhance quality of life by ensuring great neighborhoods and high-quality city services. I am committed to building a Dearborn that works for and welcomes everyone. I was raised in Dearborn, and am a graduate of UM-Dearborn. I attended graduate school and served as a middle school special education teacher in New York City from 2008-2010, and since returning home, I have worked as an educator at the University of Michigan. I served as Chair of the City Beautiful Commission and was a member of the Downtown Dearborn Promotions Committee prior to being elected to City Council.

I support the creation of a civilian oversight committee to enhance transparency and communication between law enforcement officers and members of the community. During my first term as a Council member, I have worked with my colleagues and the Police Department to examine best practices and share information with the community, and we now have arrest and traffic citation data available online. There is tremendous value in community involvement with our Police Department, and a committee could provide structured space for dialogue and review of best practices as we work together to deliver an innovative model of public safety.

Dearborn needs to allocate additional funds to public and mental health services. I envision this funding coming from a mix of grants and revenue resulting from greater economic development across our city that would add dollars to the budget. A continued commitment to recreation is also important, as we look to enhance our parks and pools for residents across the city. Funding for our library system is critical, as libraries offer Internet access, reading materials, study space and more to all residents. A budget is a reflection of a city’s values, and for Dearborn to thrive, we must deliver a variety of services that are meaningful to residents.

We need leaders that are connected and serve the entire community, with my volunteer experience I have made those connections with the residents and our elected officials.

I would not, that is a job for an experienced department such as the Wayne county Prosecutors office, City Council, and the federal government. Between those three the police department would be held to the highest standard as required. Having any citizen sit on a board and judge a police officer based on their performance will not change or solve any issues, they need to be held to a higher accountability that is already in place. IF something like this were to be established there would have to be very specific requirements and experience. Transparency with community and the police department is very good, they solve cases quickly because of it. They serve us well.

We will see a new Mayor elected this year, I have a strong relationship with all who are running from my volunteer years of experience. I have worked side by side with each of them on projects and I am very confident that I will a positive team work relationship with our next Mayor. The budget always has to be reviewed and fresh eyes on it is always a positive, I am not ready to say what I want to cut or not, I will say I appreciate our services and want to keep them at the highest standard possible. I am ready to work together with our Council, our new Mayor, and most importantly our residents to ensure transparency and understanding of our city budget.

I am a Dearborn Baseball coach for the past 8 years, Dearborn Traffic Commissioner, supporter of Dearborn Schools, Marine’s Toys for Tots, Dearborn Goodfellows “no child without a Christmas”, Dearborn Firefighters Burn Drive I am running to keep Dearborn safe, healthy, and have fair and consistent services.

If the oversight committee is to ensure transparency and equitable community engagement then yes. I will not support a citizen's oversight committee that will investigate and discipline officers. It is the responsibility of the city council to hold the police chief accountable.

I see places that spending needs to be looked at, this is where the budget will be fixed. I have seen irresponsible spending which has cost the city lots of money and the city is forced to cut services like library, parks and pools. I will work with the mayor to make Dearborn more welcoming to businesses as well as residents. I want to retain our current citizens and businesses as well as attract new citizens and businesses. This will help bring revenue back to the city.

I am proud mom to Milena (10) and Celine (3). I am a graduate of the University of Michigan- Dearborn, Thomas M. Cooley Law School and recently earned an MBA from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan- Ann Arbor. I established my small business, Venture Title Agency in 2014, in the heart of Dearborn. I am an active volunteer in several community organizations, including serving as the Secretary for the Dearborn Education Foundation. I am running for office because I care about the future of Dearborn. I care about the future of our children, and I want to serve the city that raised me by ensuring that government is working for its residents.

I am not in support of a citizen’s oversight committee because the general public may not possess the necessary prerequisites or knowledge of highly convoluted procedures and protocols in place should a matter need to be investigated. I do believe in stakeholder engagement, and I believe in maintaining the sanctity and fairness of all parties and I prefer to err on the side of caution.

I definitely would like to see more funding allocated towards improving technology and streamlining city services. Municipalities across the country have pushing to move towards a more innovative and technologically advanced infrastructure that will help streamline city services and make government more accessible to residents. I would like to see Dearborn move forward in that direction and will work with my fellow colleagues and the administration to identify new funding sources and cut any wasteful spending, ensuring that our tax dollars are spent responsibly.

I have been a Dearborn resident since 1976. My brothers and I have attended and graduated from the Dearborn Public School system. We all participated in many Dearborn Recreation Department activities as well as Dearborn Schools sports teams; I still play hockey at Adray Arena. Being a long time Dearborn resident, a parent of a HFCC student, and a business owner for over 26 years, I would like to help move the city forward with fresh ideas. The city has been very good to my family and I feel that I can give back to the community by serving as a City Council Member.

Citizen oversight police department committees are usually implemented to improve community trust in the police. The Dearborn Police Department is one of the best in the country and has our community support. For this reason, I am not in favor of a citizen's oversight committee at this time. In recent years, the Dearborn Police Department has become more diverse and continues to maintain it's high standards.

As the needs of the city change, so does the budget.. There are areas in the city's budget that should be addressed to accommodate our city's ever changing needs. As a member of the City Council, I will work with the Mayor and support him in his efforts to address the city's budget. One way to do this is to reach out and encourage new business to move to our city, filling our empty storefronts and buildings. In order to do this, we should examine our current regulations to ensure that they do not discourage new businesses.

I am a public speaker and advocate. I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from UM-Dearborn; I was born blind in Lebanon. Therefore, I completely understand how tough it is to fight for inclusion when it comes to decision-making. I am not running for the spotlight or fame; rather, I fight for transparency and accountability. Also, to reestablish the commission for disability concerns in our city. I am running to ensure that every tax dollar is being spent properly. I am running to ensure that our budget is reasonably put together and our residents receive the services they deserve. I volunteer with The Goodfellows, Rotary Club, Lions Club, etc.

I would love to thank our great men and women over at the police department. They are doing an amazing job. At first, I would like to distinguish between community engagement and encouraging an oversight committee. I believe that we have not reached a level by which we need that, but also, we do not want to wait until something terrible happens we do something like that. I certainly encourage open dialogue between all communities and the police department. If any committee of that nature is established, I firmly believe that it should be unbiased and independent. Also, the members that will make up such a committee should be qualified.

I will need to take a deeper and closer look at the budget. There is always some room for improvement. I will certainly work with my fellow council members, the mayor, and the administration to brainstorm other ideas and resources besides increasing taxes.

Education: Bachelor's Degree - Electrical Engineering from University of Michigan - Dearborn

I was born and raised in Dearborn, attended Dearborn Public Schools, Henry Ford College, and UofM-Dearborn, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in engineering. I have spent my entire professional career working for Ford Motor Company. I feel I owe Dearborn for my personal success, and the least I can do is give back by stepping up and running for office to serve our city and its residents. I have been active in local politics since I was very young and have been organizing volunteers on many local campaigns since high school. I have also done volunteer work with Gleaners, Rotary, Habitat for Humanity, Ford Volunteer Corps, and other local organizations.

I believe in civilian oversight. We currently have oversight afforded to City Council through the Charter, and the Mayor appoints our Police Chief. Elected officials should use power responsibly, and as necessary. If elected, I will be open to exploring ideas to improve operations in any city department. Forming additional bodies within the city is a serious matter to be done only after careful consideration. I plan to work with police department management to ensure our police force serves with respect for all, while maintaining a safe community. Residents should feel safe approaching officers, and officers need to be comfortable working within our community.

In order to make intelligent decisions about where to increase or where to cut funding, we need an independent audit led by the City Council. Without knowing all the facts in detail, calls for cuts or additions to the budget can be motivated by political pandering instead of an evidence-based approach. In engineering, we know when it is time to call in “subject matter experts”, and that is what I would like to do with the City of Dearborn budget. I believe that a thorough audit along with benchmarking our budget to the budgets of similar cities as ours will help us eliminate wasteful spending and reallocate funds where they are most needed.

I am eager to continue the work I began four years ago on Dearborn City Council: listening, improving transparency, and delivering first-class city services. Leadership on Council and experience with the Dearborn Public Schools, City of Dearborn, Dearborn Community Fund, and DFCU Financial demonstrate that I’m qualified to make tough, fact-based decisions and find solutions that work for long-term- economic growth and enhanced quality of life for everyone in Dearborn. I’m a proud parent and dedicated volunteer: Dearborn Education Foundation, Arts Council, neighborhood association, Symphony, Scouts, Historical Museum, League of Women Voters, Sierra Club.

Dearborn already has a strong relationship between the community and the police department, with Dearborn Police serving as a national model for community policing and engagement. Council provides a basic level of oversight & transparency in our role of reviewing & approving the city budget which funds police staff, training, & equipment. I support creating a community engagement committee to provide input as the department studies best practices in policing and strives for continuous improvement. I’ve personally worked to increase public understanding of the Police Department through public meetings and my segments of the “Meet Your Council” video series.

Council worked with the administration to trim the post-pandemic 2022 budget without causing a reduction in city services. Recognizing that residents highly value Recreation & Parks, I worked on Council to protect funding programs for seniors & youth and keep pools open. I was proud to work directly with the administration to develop a more cost-effective competitive-bid model for introducing post-pandemic arts programs at the Performing Arts Center. I will continue to work on Council to identify ways to be more efficient with tax dollars, and work with partners at the county, state, & federal level to identify grants to bring new developments to Dearborn.

I'm a Yemeni-American daughter of Army Major Dr Wijdan Luqman & Community Activist & retired Dearborn Public Schools employee, Samira AlAsbahi. My entire life has been engagement & advocacy for women, families, & residents of Dearborn. I've been attending Recreation, Planning Commission, Zoning Board, & City Council meetings for decades. I'm on the board of the Concerned Residents for South Dearborn, have partnered with corporations, the City, and nonprofits to promote green infrastructure, saving our pools; have fought industrial encroachment into residential areas; increased taxes & water bills; & fought for holding the City Admin accountable for its actions.

Yes. I do believe a citizen's oversight board would be beneficial to our City. At its core, this type of committee or board is meant to raise public trust in a City's police departments. With the amount of increased citizen participation and calls for defunding of the police, it is evident that the public has lost some trust in our police department. This is one way to restore that trust. It is also a means to achieve accountability for those individuals who may act inappropriately in the name of our police department and City.

Yes, there have been many areas where I felt there has been a mismanagement or spending of taxpayer dollars, including on unnecessary projects that have cost us millions. I plan on holding the City accountable when proposals are made. I.e. $400k+ to create a logo or $200k+ to put up Covid tents that remained unused. I plan on reviewing the salaries of Directors who earn $200k/year and where the operational costs have been excessive when commitments were made to taxpayers in 2011 and again in 2016 to reduce these costs, but were not fulfilled. I plan holding the large corps accountable for what they (dont) contribute towards our taxes, water bills, etc.

I'm a Dearborn home owner and proud resident. A loving husband and father of five beautiful children all of whom attend Dearborn Public Schools. I've served the Dearborn community for over a decade. One notably as a Commissioner for the City of Dearborn's Recreational department. When I realized the youth's distraction during the winter months, I founded an indoor soccer league to recreationally consume their time. In 2014, I earned my Masters degree in IT which lead to my current role as an IT Manager at Stellantis; FCA. I am running to improve the lives of all Dearborn residents. As Americans, it is our duty to make Dearborn a better place to live

In general terms, "Yes." But, we would need to define the boundaries. I totally understand the challenges for having an additional committee but the lack of governance got us to this point. In a typical and ideal city, the oversight, legislative branch is the elected City Council members whom are responsible to hold departments accountable for their spending and action. Unfortunately, that failed to be the case where an established, well defined governance model would ensure transparency and proper communication to the residents. With that being said, I do believe that community engagement is essential to improve communication between police and residents.

Additional funds are needed to invest in Recreation and Parks activities. Embracing the YOUTH is one of the foundational pillars to build an ideal community. We need to look into potential possibilities to optimize cost. For example, looking into the DPW total revenue which is almost $56M yearly after the hike in the fix rate, the city is obligated to pay the Great Lakes Water Authority approximately $30M for sewer and water usage which includes the infrastructure and delivery. There is a $48.7M coming through the American Rescue Plan. The point is that we have multiple resources that we can generate fund to invest in OUR youth.

Education: Dearborn High and HFC Graduate. Attended UM-Dearborn and completed School of Police Staff and Command at EMU.

I am a Dearborn Resident of 55 yrs., married with 2 children and 2 grandchildren. I attended Dbn. schools, HFC, UM-D and EMU Police Staff & Command. I served 27 yrs. with Dbn. Police & 12 with UM-D Public Safety in command positions. I was a previous Chair of the Dbn. Traffic Commission. My experience will bring a needed law enforcement perspective to Council. I’ve often spoken of the lack of a traffic safety program and offered ways to address our serious problem. I’m a Dbn. Federation of Neighborhood Assoc. member because neighborhoods matter. I’ve attended a majority of Council meetings for many years. I’m running for Council to address Public Safety concerns.

I would question the intent, authority and member qualifications of this kind of committee. Dbn. is a diverse community well served by a Professionally Accredited Police Department. Recent events have occurred to legitimately prompt more police transparency, but also a move to inappropriately defund police and dismantle effective policing efforts. Dbn. Police have worked hard to provide department transparency. They can do more and do better, but I don’t believe an oversight committee is needed at this time. Dbn. Police have earned wide community support and oversight already exists with local, State and Federal Courts, Prosecutors, City Administration and citizens.

Services important to residents’ guide decision making. Economic Development is a priority. Cuts are necessary if we don’t cut costs and encourage business and residential development to increase revenues. I propose investment in a One Stop Shop, 311 type service system, or an on-line “See Click Fix” service available 24/7. PMDS has taken steps to improve services but processes need to be user friendly and on-line 24/7. Outdated city-wide enterprise software needs replacement. American Rescue Act funded projects ($47.2M) need to be scrutinized, or we will be burdened with support costs when funding expires. I've attended most budget meetings for the last 5 years.

I am 49, married, proud father of 5 and a lifelong Dearborn resident. I have been a licensed attorney for 8 years. My 25+ years of sales experience has taught me the people skills necessary to get the job done and my Law degree affords me the knowledge necessary to make critical decisions. I’m running for reelection to build on our accomplishments. There is more work to do. Although I have been able to achieve substantial changes, I have more to give and I know there is more I can do to help improve our city. I am a very passionate person that sets goals and achieves them. Dearborn is a great place to live and raise a family; I know I can help keep it that way.

Transparency and accountability in city government are crucial. That’s why I have worked with our police department and city stakeholders to establish the daily crime report that the Dearborn Police department currently releases. Oversight and holding city services accountable is a charter mandated role of those serving on City Council. This is something I take very seriously. I remain focused on working to create a more transparent city while serving on the City Council.

We need to invest in our economic development department, to aggressively attract the new businesses. The days when I was a kid and rode the monorail from the Hyatt to the Fairlane Town Center are long gone. Today the Hyatt is vacant and Fairlane Town Center is under court receivership. The reality of today's economy requires that we seek fresh new ideas that are not solely regionally based. In working with our State and Federal officials I believe we can seek funding through grants and Brownfield development. We also need to invest in online technology upgrades that will not only improve our services but will also reduce staffing levels.

I have worked for two renowned corporations, the Boeing Company, as a Quality Manager and Lead Auditor and at Ford Motor Company as a Product Development Engineer. I served as a U.S. Marine for 21 years in multiple leadership capacities. I was appointed to Mayor on January 26, 2021, and previously served as a City Councilman. I am running for Mayor to continue my commitment to serve the people. This includes enhancing city services and equal access to resources, listening to residents, and ensuring transparency in city government. I serve on several boards and have spearheaded many community service initiatives to provide residents with food and other resources.

As last year’s budget resulted in lost revenue, additional funds are needed for our parks, infrastructure, and senior citizen programs. As a council member last year, I had voiced my concerns about the budget and voted against its approval. This year as Mayor, I have and continue to work with my new city team members to cut frivolous costs, apply for grants, remove red tape, and encourage both improvements and new businesses which generate revenue. Although we initially lost revenue due to COVID, fortunately we will be receiving American Rescue Plan funds of over 24 million dollars, for use towards lost revenue and rebuilding infrastructure.

The health, safety, and wellbeing or all our residents is our top priority. Yes, I am in favor of citizens reviewing, engaging, making recommendations, and be part of the dialogue in all areas of public safety. As elected officials and leaders, we need to work with residents to ensure there is transparency, accountability, equal treatment, and community engagement across all demographics throughout the city--which is the corner stone of community policing. This can most effectively be accomplished when all parties are informed, through exchange of information and with a seat around the table, in addition to mutual respect for the laws of the land.

Real Estate trained me to understand the different trends and how they effect our community. The union enabled me to negotiate & come to a fair solution for both sides. I am running to be a positive part of Dearborn Heights future.

The first thing I will do is go over the budget to ensure it is balanced. There has been a lot of new positions created. There was also a lot of raises given at the recent budget sessions. Once I’m sure the budget is balanced I will look at it more closely to see if certain areas need more funds. As far a additional revenue we recently added a grant writer so I see that moving us in a positive direction to secure more funding.

I would have no problem having a citizens oversight committee to ensure all citizens are treated fairly. I am in favor of promoting transparency and equitable community engagement by our police department. We have a great group of police officers. We are lucky to have them.
