What should my annotations contain?

• Date of entry?• Title and author labeled?• Genre type labeled? (poem, short story, excerpt, nonfiction

article, speech, etc.)

• Purpose of entry?• Summary of information?• How it relates to the memoir?• Specific aspects, details, or devices used?• Figurative language indicated (if present)?• Explanation of any drawings or images?• Addition of images/sketches that relate?

EVERY ENTRY OR ITEM NEEDS ANNOTATION OF SOME SORT!

“Lead Me Home” annotation• Label the title• Label the songwriter• Label every 5th line to the

left-hand side• Make note of how many

stanzas there are (write on page)

• Who is the speaker?• What is the subject?• What is the theme?• What is the tone?

• Determine the rhyme scheme to the right-hand side of the poem

• Label any repetition that you find

• Label any figurative language – Simile– Metaphor– Personification– Symbolism– Hyperbole– Paradox
