Formal In-class Debate

Class Debate: In preparation for the argumentative essay, students will partake in a classroom

debate concerning a series of debatable topics. Students will use credible sources to base their

arguments. Half of the class will be assigned a standing and the remaining half will be assigned

the opposing standing. Students will be required to bring with them index cards with the

bibliographical information of their sources along with any notes the student may deem

necessary in order to contribute to the debate.

Remember to:

use credible sources

take the opposing view into consideration

take your audience into consideration

attack the idea, not the person

Use two index cards you to write down any notes you consider useful for your argument

(also include a few of the opposing views to help you counter argue). Include the source from

where you got your information. These index cards will be collected and you will receive credit

for them. You will also receive credit for your participation during this debate.
