Geneva 2020 Background and UpdateWhat Geneva 2020 is:The commitment of a group of members from different parts of the Geneva community to a common agenda for solving specific issues affecting our youth using a structured form of collaboration. The underlying premise of Collective Impact is that no single organization can create large-scale lasing social change on its own.The Geneva 2020 initiative is like an engine working behind the scenes to help bring organizations together, to eliminate silos, to use data to influence all actions, to discuss need and help everyone in the community work stronger and more efficiently. Geneva 2020 shines the flashlight on the challenges facing Geneva’s youth, and then works with our partners to fix those problems. Together. As one. Collectively working to create true impact in Geneva.

What Geneva 2020 is not:A program. A fundraising initiative. A great idea that will fizzle out. One person’s vision. Criticism. Competition.

Geneva 2020 Background and Update

Geneva 2020 Highlight Reel2011—Geneva 2020 was first conceived around HWS President Mark Gearan’s dining room table with key community members discussing John Kania and Mark Kramer’s 2011 article, “Collective Impact” in the Stanford Social Innovation Review. This meeting solidified the idea that Collective Impact could happen in Geneva and that it would be successful for our youth and our community.2012—Hobart and William Smith Colleges became the anchor entity of Geneva 2020, providing backbone support and creating a new program for college readiness by committing to bring all Geneva 9th and 6th graders to the HWS campus each year for a college campus visit.2013—The Geneva Education Foundation first convened, seeking to provide a funding source for the Geneva City School District. Since becoming chartered in 2015, the Education Foundation has helped provide financial support for local school programming, such as offsetting AP test costs for economically disadvantaged students.

Geneva 2020 Background and UpdateGeneva 2020 Highlight Reel, cont.2014—Geneva 2020 became an official partner of the SUNY Cradle to Career Network, led by SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher, one of the original architects of the StriveTogether Collective Impact model. This partnership connects nine different collective impact initiatives across New York State. 2015—Geneva 2020 is awarded a grant from the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund, which, along with matching funds from HWS, allows for the hiring of the Geneva 2020 Program Coordinator, the first dedicated staff member of Geneva 2020. In April, there is a community-wide convening for Geneva 2020, at which SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher is the keynote speaker. The Geneva 2020 Roadmap and Governing Structure are created by Geneva 2020 community workshops.2016—Geneva 2020 becomes an official StriveTogether member, after completing all the elements on the Theory of Action rubric and filling out an extensive Assessment form. This membership provides significant resources for Geneva 2020, as well as the clout of being a member of a successful national leader in the Cradle-to-Career field. 2017—The first Geneva 2020 Community Report is published, and the first Collaborative Action Network (or CAN) is created for literacy support.
