Brian a break. The club needs member/s to take up this important role for the Club. The

times.
It’s an important role and one upon which the Club depends. Brian is more than happy to
mentor as long as he is needed. It’s your Club. Give it a go.

MEMBERS NEEDED
Our Club, like many, has a largely static membership. This is a stable way forward but
does expose the Club to a risk of shrinking as members sell their cars, relocate etc. Let’s
keep the Club vibrant and active in a simple way. If you know of anyone looking to buy a
Historic Car, recommend the Club to them. They will need the historic registration at any
rate, and so need a club. Also, if a member sells a car, redirect the incoming custodian of
the car to the Club. Keep the membership of the car on our register. It’s for the future.

EXPLORE THE LAST 60 YEARS OF THE MINI
That’s 60 years of innovation, icons and imagination. We’ve come a long way since 1959, when Sir Alec Issigonis first designed the game-changing Morris Mini in pencil on a tablecloth. In 2019, we’ll be celebrating by taking a look at some key moments that have defined MINI – both around the world, and here in Australia and New Zealand.
1959 Mini begins life as a Morris Mini Minor – a feat of engineering designed to meet the challenges of changing times.
1961 British racing legend John Cooper comes across the Mini and puts his spin on Alec Issigonis’ design, adding a more pow-
erful engine, bigger brakes and a few tuning tweaks. The result was the Classic Mini Cooper 997 – a model that set the tem-
plate for a succession of giant-killing motor racing stars, with three victories in the Monte Carlo Rally among the highlights.
Assembly starts in Australia with the Morris 850. A plant at Zetland, set up to construct cars from UK-sourced kits, was
expected to assemble 20 Minis a day. Output soon climbed to 100 cars a day and, by 1963, Mini was third on the Australian
1964 Mini proves itself as the little car that could – racing to victory in the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally for the first time. Paddy
Hopkirk and Henry Liddon won the Rally in a Mini Cooper S, with a faultless run over country roads and mountain passes, ice
and snow, tight corners and steep gradients that won the underdog a spot in the hearts of the public and motor sports fans
alike. Mini’s dominance in the Rally continued with wins in 1965 and 1967.
1966 Rauno Aaltonen and Bob Holden win the Gallagher 500 endurance race in a MINI Cooper S, held at the incomparable
Mount Panorama circuit in Bathurst. The first nine places in the race were taken out by Minis – arguably the brand’s biggest
moment in Australia. The whereabouts of the winning car remains a mystery to this day.
The New South Wales Police force takes six Mini Cooper S vehicles to trial for highway patrol on the Hume Highway. The force
needed a special patrol car that was fast and nimble to replace motorcycle policing – and the Mini Cooper S was just that.
They were so successful that NSW Police used the cars for five years
1971 With celebrities, musicians and film stars driving Minis, the small but mighty car had won the hearts of the fashionable
and creative, and the world seemed to follow suit. By 1969, over 2 million had been sold around the world since the first Mini
was launched. In 1971 alone, more than 50,000 Minis are sold worldwide for the year for the first time.
Morris Mini K launches as an Australian-only vehicle – the larger fuel tank and efficient fuel consumption lent it the nickname
‘Kangaroo’ (an animal that can go all day without drinking). The distinctly Australian model was light green in colour, featured
a map of Australia on the rocker cover and was 95 per cent Australian-made.
1994 MINI is acquired by German brand BMW, which brought German engineering innovation to MINI’s iconic British design.
Today, each new model is designed and developed in BMW’s Munich headquarters by interior and exterior designers and
automotive engineers.
1998 To celebrate Mini’s upcoming 40th birthday, three icons – Kate Moss, David Bowie and Paul Smith – design their very
own special edition Mini Coopers. The Bowie-style MINI was like a highly-polished bumper, which reflected everything around
it. The owner was supposed to see themselves in the reflection, thereby becoming part of the car. Only the rear lights and
tyres remained untouched – because technically, the car had to be driveable.
1999 With over five million classic Minis on the road, a panel of 130 international automotive journalists vote MINI the ‘European Car of the Century’. For the international title, MINI places second, surpassed only by the Ford Model T In October of 1999, just a few days before the final classic Mini rolled off the production line, the concept for a new MINI is unveiled at the Paris Auto Show. The distinctive design and personality is immediately recognisable, and reference the iconic design that made MINI so famous decades earlier

EXPLORE THE LAST 60 YEARS OF THE MINI
2003 MINI becomes star of the show in the remake of the film The Italian Job. It’s said that 32 MINI Coopers were used during
filming, and sales jumped after the film was released. Actor Mark Wahlberg likened driving the cars to driving "a really high-
powered go-kart".
2004 Just in time for summer, the MINI Hatch receives a makeover with a convertible version. The new addition to the family
followed the successful release of the MINI Hatch and took the playful spirit of MINI a step further.
2007 The classic MINI Clubman takes a fresh update – an urban model designed to move between work and play, that’s still
a favourite to this day.
2008 The MINI John Cooper Works is launched, heralding a new era of motorsport with a nod to the essence of MINI’s
racing heritage. The new vehicle featured twin-pipe sports exhaust, contrast roof and mirror caps and thrillingly responsive
acceleration – an impressive addition to MINI’s line up
2010 The world’s most iconic small car grows up with the introduction of the MINI Countryman. The SUV concept proved
immediately successful.
2012 MINI earns its first Dakar Rally title, kicking off an era of motorsport success to rival that of the early 1960s. The MINI
All4 Racing would go on to win the Rally in 2013, 2014 and 201
2013 The MINI 5-door Hatch is released, adding extra space to an already-loved model, which to this day remains a MINI
favourite.
2015 British motoring meets Italian craftsmanship with the MINI Superleggera Vision. The intention? To celebrate the super-
light quality, performance and sheer love of bygone days of motoring in a car equipped with the very latest functionalities
2017 Inspired by John Cooper’s legendary motorsport triumphs, the MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept picks up the baton
from the previous JCW models – representing undiluted dynamic flair and the ultimate in driving fun – on both the race track
and the road. Taking the iconic design, city-dwelling heritage and customary go-kart feeling of the MINI into the future, the
MINI Electric Concept Car is announced. The model is a glimpse of how pure electric day-to-day mobility might look in the
years to come.
2019 Always evolving and looking forward, MINI confirms its first-ever hybrid electric model – the MINI Countryman S E All4.
With a potential charge time of just two hours and 15 minutes, it’s a bold step into the future, while keeping the iconic MINI
spirit and design. Paying homage to the Millbrook proving circuit in Bedfordshire, MINI returns to its racing roots with an
exclusive model, the MINI JCW Millbrook Edition. Taking its name from one of Europe’s foremost facilities for testing and
development, the model paves the way for a new era of MINI motorsport

CLUB RUN TO ELYSIAN SPRINGS VINEYARD – NOVEMBER 24 2019
It was a pleasant spring day when we meet at the clubrooms, a contrast to the weather of the previous
week.
We headed up Greenhill Road and into the hills. We were not the only ones out enjoying the weather as
first we encountered quite a few push bikes and later many motorbikes. Some of our members felt that
some of these riders had a death wish as they overtook on blind corners. Drivers’ shoulders got a
workout as we travelled along some interesting winding roads and viewed steep hillsides. We passed the
Basket Range Manor, formerly Camelot Castle, as well as many apple and cherry trees, some with sub-
stantial netting for bird & hail protection. This was also the start of lots of vineyards and a few alpaca
herds.
Our group stopped at Gumeracha Pioneer Park for morning tea where we were joined by some of our
hills dwellers including Trevor riding his motor bike and sidecar. The park has an interesting board giving
the history of the Gumeracha district and its early pioneers. Drivers and passengers got a chance to chat
and re-cooperate before we set out on an easier drive to the winery.
Leaving Gumeracha we travelled through Forreston and Mt Pleasant, where at the Mt Pleasant Show-
grounds and at nearby Talunga Park there were numerous horses and riders going through their paces.
We passed pine forests of various ages. Some of the gum trees were flowering and many had mistletoe
growing on them. We started to see some very old gums before turning into our destination, Elysian
Springs Winery. At the entrance there is an International truck, hence John & Jenny’s connection.
Before lunch John took us for a drive around the vineyards where we saw a very large dam unfortunately
during such a dry time it was only about half full but being enjoyed by many ducks. The dam holds trout
and fishing clubs come there to try their luck. We saw the start of the River Torrens and a shed with many
International Scouts in varying stages of repair. John, who was leading the group and expecting kanga-
roos, got quite a shock when three suddenly shot across in front of him. A small kangaroo decided that
escape through the rows of vines was a better route.
Members enjoyed lunch sitting in the shade outside the tasting room. Some tasted wines and bought
food for a picnic lunch. It was an excellent day - an interesting run, good company and an ideal venue.
Thank you to John & Jenny Badcock for organising it.
