MESSENGER COLBERT UNITED METHODIST CHURCH // VOLUME 5 // ISSUE 12 IN THIS ISSUE From The Pastor's Desk Hello Friends, One cold night, a small group of people shuffled into a large church on the town square in Vermont. The church was one of those tall-steeple Congrega- tionalist churches that had long ago seen its glory years come and go, and the turnout this night was smaller than expected —two people to be exact. As the Christ candle was lit to signify God with us, it sput-tered and puffed so much that the pastor had the time to think to himself, "Please don’t let it go out.” He remembers, “The candle sputters in the half-darkness like a voice too embarrassed or overwhelmed to proclaim the news, but then, it catches fire, and there we are, three people and a flickering light in an old church…the noise of the cars and their winter-rusted mufflers outside. The moment is filled with ambiguities,” he continues, “of all such quiet observances among few people, in the midst of an oblivious population in a radically secular age. The act is so ambiguous because its terms are so extreme: the Lord is with us, or we are pathetic fools.” (Garret Keizer, A Dresser of Sycamore Trees: The Finding of a Ministry, p. 73)This time of year, we light candles in the darkness, praying that they somehow sputter into the Light of the World. We sit with dear friends enduring loss, hoping that somehow our presence is would flicker God’s life into theirs. We sing songs that tell of Christ’s coming in final victory even while a world of defeated people rips down Hwy 72—oblivious to our strange, unheard news. Take heart, friends. At some point, the candle will catch, the blaze will warm, and the celebration of Christmas will be upon us. We will put away the talk of darkness and waiting, and will revel instead in the gifts that signal His arrival. Your trustees hope everyone had a blessed and happy Thanksgiving. As the calendar year draws to a close, so are the projects that thisyear’s trustees have accomplished. The trustees look forward tocompleting current projects and implementing new ones next year. Projects completed include the cleaning of the steeples on boththe church and FLC; upgrading the church marquee sign with LEDlights; electrical upgrades to the parsonage, along with trimming theshrubbery; carpets in both the church nursery and the former youthroom in the FLC professionally cleaned; and a new awning over theentrance to the Sunday school annex. CUMC’s youth director, Tracy Coley, spearheaded the conversion ofthe basically unused old fellowship hall into an area for the youth tohave their own space to meet, have Bible studies, play games, study, etc. The trustees approved this project, and the finance committee, along with others, provided the funding. The HVAC vendor has beenapproved with an air/heat unit being installed in the near future. Wethank our pastor for his leadership and input on this project. The trustees' desire is for everyone to have a blessed holiday and aChrist filled Christmas season. We want to spread anew the GoodNews of Christ’s birth. We thank each person for helping us tominister to our fellow man. Should anyone have a concern or idea, please inform the pastor or any member of the trustees.

GAP ClassThe final book in the Bible is calledRevelation, because it reveals howlife on earth as we know it will end.But it could just as easily havebeen called “The New Beginning,”because it is all about what life inGod’s perfect community will belike. This book may mark the endof the Bible, but it’s really thebeginning of a brand-newadventure. We sincerely appreciate NealMcGinnis for sharing his insightand previous study of Revelation. It has been so wonderful to readand share together in thescriptures found there. Join us onSundays at 10am to participatewith us.

BrookshireClassLiving into this holy purpose isnot just our final destination; it's also our path, one that we do notwalk alone. We can walk with confidence because we love andserve a God who is faithful and dependable, who makes andkeeps promises, and never givesup on us. We can trust this God. This God gives us hope." Thetheme for our lessons is "Hope,"and we will study and discussscripture from both the Old and New Testament. Come join us aswe draw closer to God andincrease our faith.
