Once again I’m in Ontario, Canada, It is a mixed bag in the Crownland. Mist
one moment, sun breaking through the next. Charging my phone on the solar
panel is slow going. It is not to be used for calls or anything cell tower related but
used for the camera.
I have a front-row seat for the drama on the lake. A baby loon, as big as the adults,
is taking on loon markings though it is still brown and beige rather than the
famous black and white.
The drama is life and death. There are many dangers for a young loon, and it is
very fortunate to have survived to this stage. The young loon and the adult have
both been diving. I am hoping that the young loon is catching some food on its
own. Often it is close to the adult, circling, begging, and sometimes the adult
feeds it a minnow.
The adult loons leave a few weeks before the young, leaving them to fend for
themselves. The adults have been diligent in their duties, and the young must be
able not only to feed themselves and watch danger from all directions, but fly out
just before the ice forms. In September, the young have not flown yet.
The loons have been busy and so is the crew preparing for the 2017 Annual
Meeting in Iowa City. A great deal of planning and preparation goes into
producing a quality show. This annual show gives us the opportunity to socialize
and learn from others. It also acts as a fundraiser, allowing us to support projects
and activities throughout the year. Please mark your calendars, and I will see you
in February!

Jay Fishy Fullum
Jay Fishy Fullum has been tying fliessince receiving a fly tying kit Christmasday 1951. He has always loved his timeat the vise, especially when he is design-ing a new creation.
F or over 30 years Jay Fishy Ful-
lum worked as a designer and
graphic artist. During this time he was
also an outdoor editor for two newspa-
pers. Fishy said he retired from his real
job and the newspaper in 1995 to pur-
sue his passion for writing, tying flies,
and fly fishing. He still utilizes his art
talent when illustrating magazine articles
or a new book. Fishy also established
himself as a watercolorist shortly after
retiring; selling many paintings that com-
bine paper, paint, and his unique fly patterns.
Fishy has been tying flies since the early fifties and teaching
fly tying for over 30 years. During the past twenty years he
has designed nearly one hundred fifty productive, innovative
patterns for everything from bluegills to bonefish. Many of
these patterns have been featured in his “Creative Tying”
column published in Fly Tyer
magazine throughout the
past 15 years. More than fifty
unique patterns were also
included in two of his fly
tying books, Fishy’s Flies
and Fishy’s Favorites. An-
other book, FLY TYING
with Common Household
Materials, is based on
the many unusual mate-
rials Fishy has wrapped
around a hook during
his time at the vise. His
most recent book is At The Vise and On The
Water, published in 2013.
Fishy is featured at many of the major fly tying/fly fishing
events where he demonstrates the art of fly tying and fly
fishing during his presentations. His show and seminar
schedule has taken him from the South Seas Resort on
Captiva Island, Florida, to the Rising Sun chapter of Trout
Unlimited in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Many of us have allowed fly fishing to be apriority in our lives, and I believe it makes us feelalive.…My time is spent between Belize and the US,living a life of fly fishing. Yes, I love catchingfish. The thrill is like no other. But the storyalways has the people and the character of theplace. And “that place” always has somethingnew to teach me. — Lori-Ann
A s an avid outdoor enthusiast,
Lori-Ann discovered the excite-
ment of experiencing nature through
fly fishing on her home waters of
southwest Montana, Idaho’s Snake
River, and the Jackson Hole area of
Wyoming.
In 1989, Lori-Ann was the first woman to be named an
Orvis-Endorsed fly fishing guide. She has served as a consul-
tant to several fly fishing tackle and equipment manufactur-
ers.
In 1994, Lori-Ann co-founded Reel Women Fly Fishing Adven-
tures. Reel Women was the first company to offer women-only
fly fishing trips all over the world. Reel Women has since
grown to include guided float
trips for both men and women,
fly fishing schools, fly fishing
guide schools, casting clinics,
and destination trips.
Presently, Lori-Ann guides on Am-
bergris Caye from her San Pedro
home. Beginning bonefishing to
the hot pursuit of permit and tar-
pon on the fly, Lori-Ann provides
anglers with the tools they need to
find their fish. She designs custom
fly fishing trips for people who want
to visit Belize and explore.
Late summertime finds Lori-Ann in her Montana town. Wil-
low Creek is home to the Reel Women School house. Located
next to the Missouri Headwaters, the fishing options are
endless. The Reel Women School program and destination
trips are all a part of Lori-Ann’s mission to share the fun of
fly fishing.

MIKE JACOBSMike Jacobs is a life member of HFFA and has been a member
since 1976. He began tying flies before he even learned how
to fly fish. He began his fly fishing career focused on trout
and panfish, but has now
broadened his horizons and
will fly fish for any fish that
will take a fly. Smallmouth
bass have become his primary
quarry. As Mike has gotten
older (perish the thought) he
is working on adding more
and different fish species to
his bucket list.

The Artistic AnglerHFFA Photo and Essay Contests
Getting to know your fellow HFFA member: Dean Elder Jr
When did you join HFFA? Our local junior college sponsored
a fly tying class in the early 1960s. Jim Maxted, Red Hovden,
Judge O’Bryon and Bud Chandler were my classmates. Red
Hovden and Judge O’Bryon both fish for trout in Northeast
Iowa. They fished on North Bear and Waterloo streams with
Sy Sato, a Waterloo, IA, architect. Word came down that a club
was being formed in Waterloo by a group of fly fisherman. We
met at the Howard Johnson Motel in Cedar Falls. The club
became the Hawkeye Fly Fishing Association. Red, the Judge,
Jim, Bud, and I were founding charter members, along with
Sy, Craig Ritland, Mac McCann, Vic, and Ed Gibson.
Family? My wife is Karen, a retired English teacher in the
Marshalltown high school system.
Occupation? I’ve been a Realtor for over 50 years and still
work every day.
Hometown? Marshalltown.
When did you begin to fly fish? I became interested in fly
fishing in the early 1940s, when I was taking the Fly Fishing
merit badge to qualify for my Eagle Scout award. My instruc-
tor, John Garwood, was a local river rat, who fished with a fly
rod. John fished with softshell crawdads to catch smallmouth
bass and catfish. He did on occasion fish a streamer fly. My
paper route money went for my first fly rod, which in those
days were bamboo. I purchased the fly rod at Abbott Hard-
10 www.hawkeyeflyfishing.com
ware or Montgomery Wards for $7. The Pflueger reel and fly
line were extra. Growing up, my fishing was in Marshalltown
at the first dam on the Iowa River. In those days, you could
catch smallmouth bass, pumpkin seed, crappie, bluegill,
and catfish in the same pool near the damn –not today– sad
to say.
What is your home water? My local fishing waters today are
local farm ponds. My favorite fishing spots are in Northeast
Iowa for trout.
What is your favorite species to fly fish for? My favorite
species is trout, although bluegill fishing comes next. Blue-
gill fly fishing is a lot of fun on a light rod with small dry
flies.
Tell us about your fly rods? My first graphite rod was a
Powell rod that I purchased from charter member Ed Powell.
Today I fish with a Pine River bamboo rod made by club
member Steve Pennington.
What are your most memorable fly fishing experiences?
My favorite fishing days have been on the Big Horn River in
Montana, the Prairie River in Wisconsin, and a secret pond
west of Marshalltown for big crappies and bluegills.
What are your other hobbies? My other hobbies include
building model race cars and going to work every day.
What’s your favorite fly? I love to tie flies, and I have many
favorite flies. I like to fish with bead head nymphs and
parachute flies for trout. I use foam bugs for crappie and
bluegills. I also like to fish the “Gimp” in the early spring for
crappie. My fly choices in the late summer and fall for trout
are Humpies and grasshoppers.
What fishing magazines do you subscribe to? My maga-
zine stack is made up of Trout, Fly Tyer, Eastern Fly Fishing,
Fly Fishing, & Fly Tying.
What’s your favorite fly fishing book? My fishing library is
mostly John Gierach, any pretty picture book, Poul Jorgens-
en, Dave Hughes, and Lacy Gee.
What do you like about HFFA? I truly enjoy fly fishing, fly
tying, and knowing the many nifty people you meet in our
sport. Like they say, “I have not met a fly fisherman that I do
not like.” (Photo by Larry Murphy)

H ere I sit at the computer typing possibly my last story about Charlene. Not
that it brings a tear to my eye that she will be moving to her next home in
February. But I must admit it has been an interesting experience having Charlene
around. For several weeks Charlene has been listening intently to the political
debates on TV and frankly her facial expression matches much of the facial
expressions of the voters in America today. I sit down in my fly tying sanctuary in
Charlene’s company while I tie flies and listen intently to her views on who should
be president. I will neither reveal her political party nor will I reveal who she would
vote for but believe me she feels both candidates to date have laid more eggs in
the political process than she ever did in her lifetime. As a result she is seriously
considering running in the 2020 election. She feels by then both parties will have
destroyed each other to the point that the new Fowl Party has a chance to emerge
as a real contender.
I think she has been watching way too much television at my house. I went
downstairs one evening to tie some Bronze Goddesses (my favorite smallmouth
fly), and I caught her glaring at the TV, clucking loudly at the Chick-fil-A commer-
cial. She immediately started making "Eat More Beef" signs to wave at those cows
that are in the advertisement. She was muttering something like "Chicken Lives
Matter!" That's where I drew the line, and I banned her from the TV for a while. I
reassured her all lives matter, and that's the way it is around this household.
Last Saturday I thought Charlene could help me rake leaves in the back yard. She assumed her spot on our patio table and
watched me rake and vacuum and rake and vacuum and rake and vacuum leaves for hours. She was fascinated with how hard
I was working. This was just like my lovely wife, Pam, who enjoyed being a spectator as well. I thought both of them could
give me a hand, but I was reminded that I did not help wash the windows that morning. It seems they both took offense that
I sneaked off fishing. So I guess it was turnabout is fair play to have them observe me work. I told them fly fishing is a lot of
work but neither of them bought it. I will admit it was desperation on my part to secure help by guilt, but as usual it was a
waste of time. It seems those two women have me pegged pretty well now.
I know Pam is looking forward to having Charlene leave the house. For some strange reason she thinks that Charlene does
not fit into our decor very well. In my lovely wife's opinion, the only place Charlene looks good is down in my fly tying room
(preferably with the door shut). What most empty nesters do is turn the kids’ bedrooms in to good, usable space. My son's
old bedroom makes a great fly tying room. When he and his wife come to stay, Charlene has to go into another room to sleep
because, for some reason, they think Charlene stares at them all night. I get the orders from them that say, "Get the creepy
Chicken out of my room." Terrible way to treat Charlene in my opinion, but she seems to be a good sport about it.
By the time this is printed Charlene will have chosen her next sponsor for 2017. She has hinted to me on who it will be, but
she wanted it to be a secret. She went so far as to lay an egg with the winner’s name inside. I have been tempted to break
the egg open, but she has threatened to stay with me for another year if I did that. Pam heard about the threat from Charlene
and advised me not to do anything to jeopardize the opportunity that will be afforded to the next sponsor of Charlene. So I
will be bringing the egg to the next annual meeting for the official breaking open. I can't wait to see who she picked. So
beware all of you who have not sponsored Charlene before. She may be coming to a place near you in the near future.

Outdoor Living & GivingHFFA Making a Difference in 2016 and Beyond
Hello Fellow HFFA members,
I thought I’d take a little space to share some things with you as a year-end review
outside of the regular “President’s Hatch.”
Sometimes, it is easy to forget what we have accomplished over the course of a
year, and it is always good to take a look to see where we have been and where we
are going.
We have continued to build relationships with the Iowa DNR through workdays and
partnering with groups they work with. We offer financial and volunteer assistance.
In March, we helped build fish habitat at Turtle Creek WMA. April found us taking
out old fencing at the Tibbot Easement on Spring Branch Creek.
Funding of $1,000 went to help the Driftless TU Chapter with a stream habitat
restoration project on Waterloo Creek just upstream from Dorchester, Iowa. Five
hundred dollars sponsored Project AWARE, which involved a huge effort by
volunteers who spent a week cleaning up a stretch of the Des Moines River in
southeast Iowa. This fall, HFFA donated $1,000 to the Iowa Natural Heritage
Foundation’s project of acquiring 79 acres adjacent to the DNR’s 40-acre Ensign
Hollow WMA. This will double the amount of publicly owned Hewett Creek from
0.6 miles to 1.1 miles.
Of course, you can tell by looking at the Flyline Calendar that we are involved in a variety of
activities to show our support of both warm and coldwater fisheries and their watersheds. Around
the state you see us involved in Project Healing Waters, Iowa State Fair, Casting for Recovery, many kids
and women’s clinics, booths at outdoor days, programs to introduce others to fly fishing, and attending and
supporting other conservation organizations’ activities.
We would always like to give more support to projects and activities. One thing that would help would be if everyone would
keep their membership up-to-date. Dues help to pay for the
Flyline printing and mailing, insurance, and other expenses
of running a club. Fundraising at the Annual Meeting is
where funds come from to give us financial cushion for the
“extras” above.
Thank you to all who offer support in any way that you can!

I developed this fly around 2009, prior to a smallmouth bass float trip. The predecessor of this fly had no bronze mallard
collar. As I was tying some of those flies for the trip, I noticed a pile of bronze mallard feathers on my tying desk. Just as
an experiment, I wrapped the feather collar on some of the flies, intending to try them out the next day. When I tested the
flies on the small stream, they readily caught fish, including some big bass.
The more I used the BG, the more confidence I had in it. I handed out several to friends, asking them to try it out and see
how it worked for them. The results all came back the same. This fly is a killer, not only on smallies but many different
freshwater fish. Bass and trout are where it really stands above the crowd. It has gained a great following of fly fishers in IA,
OH, IN, IL, WI, FL, MN, CO, WY, MT, ID, and more.
The fly pattern was published in an article that appeared in the autumn 2011 issue of Fly Tyer magazine. Since the magazine
article came out, I have modified the pattern slightly, changing the flash in the tail from Root Beer Krystal Flash to the
Speckled Copper Flashabou. Tie some BG and test them on your favorite waters. You'll be glad you did. MJ
produce The Flyline. Without their help, we would not have
had as much varied newsletter content or as many calendar
events listed.
In February 2017 it will be 2 years since I agreed to tackle the
role of newsletter editor. The start was slow and a bit rough,
especially when I had to say no to fishing trips in lieu of
editing copy and laying out the newsletter! However, it’s been
a pleasure serving our HFFA membership and accomplishing
some personal goals. And surprising to me, I’ve even come
to appreciate better our club’s mascot, Charlene the Char-
treuse Chicken, after reading the entertaining Charlene arti-
cles contributed by the hen’s most recent hosts Ray Thys and
Scott Nordby. But please keep in mind that I appreciate
Charlene the most from at least a 50-mile distance from me!
Now the time has come to let someone else take the reigns
as editor. I previously gave one year notice to ensure there
was ample time to find a new editor. The March 2017
newsletter will be the final Flyline created on my laptop.
After this, yes, I hope there will be more fishing adventures,
but I also have increasing family responsibilities, so my
resignation is needed. Whether our club leaders have found
a new editor or are still considering who they’d like to be the
next lucky editor, I will be happy to help this person transi-
tion into the role. Thanks again for your support – it has
been rewarding and a pleasure.

new Natural Resources Biologist. His new
duties include managing the fisheries of
northeastern Iowa in an eight-county area.
Mike spent the previous 10 years in Mis-

his work on trout habitat surveys.
Mike grew up in west-central Iowa and received a Bachelor’s degree
in Animal Ecology from Iowa State University and a Master’s degree
in Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences from the Universi-
ty of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he studied the effects of
angling on black bass growth and fitness. To date, Mike has over
20 scientific publications on sportfish biology and management
and has presented his research findings at numerous international
fisheries conferences.
Mike plans to continue working to improve trout fishing opportuni-
