there they had a couple who could feature in the proceedings and finish strongly. BikeGearNow/VeloEx were well stocked, the workhorses Rob Amos and Steve Ross there to get involved in an early break or to assist their sprint chances in Frank Nyhuis who’s current form makes him a threat early as well as late, Peter Howard rounding out the team, a handy card that could be played at any time if the situation arose. Bike Force were there in full force Roy Clark and Guy Green being the team for this season and with a rested Guy and still in-form Roy, they were not to be dismissed lightly, their race-nouse worth at least another rider if not two. Adriatic rounded out the teams, another balanced team; Tony Chandler, Andy Burmas and Carl Cubit to work the whole race through, James Steward another all-rounder who would need to be watched for both an early break and a late sprint. On top of this a handful of independents who were more than capable of mixing it up with rest. To be honest I have little recollection of the race; it was fast, there were constant attacks. Some moves (those involving one or two riders from one or two teams) were allowed a bit of rope with the non-involved teams maintaining the gap but as soon as the balance swung or a team tried to load the break it was quickly brought back. Four laps in, motoring along Geddes Street into the last turn the back of my bike goes soft – I’d felt this before, I knew it was just the road surface – no problems. But it got softer – this was a problem, a problem compounded by being toward the front of the a-grade bunch that was in the process of passing the very big, and racing, c-grade bunch. Add to that the upcoming corner and needless to say some prayers were uttered and passed to the gods with the raising of my hand to indicate my intent to imminently fall over. They say fortune favours the brave, I don’t know why I was favoured but still upright with a-grade disappearing up the road and c-grade making their way through on the left I rolled to the finish hollering for a 10-speed shimano rear. Many thanks to Darren Eagle who quickly had his wheel to hand and mine replaced long before the a-

grade bunch hove into sight around the last corner. There was a small breakaway – I looked to the referee considering a plea of “I’d have been in that, honestly, can I go now? Huh? Can I? can I?” but decided that that was a tad unnecessary, it was still early, it was one rider and it was never going to last. Rejoining the bulk as they caught me on Dunlop Road we set about returning the lone aggressor to the bunch and me to my role. There were breaks to chase, breaks to get involved in, team-mates to be relieved – happy as a pig in silk sheets. Thirty-five – forty minutes in, this is where things were going to be decided. A two pronged attack, well, one team going on the left – Carl Cubit (Adriatic), one on the right - Frank Nyhuis (BikeGearNow/VeloEx) and with box-seat tickets to the right break I’ve no choice but to go with it. Three away and the bunch considering its options. Whilst they were pondering and we were pounding (the pedals) another joined us – the independent in Pinnacle Cycles kit. Then there were half a dozen, Ciaran Jones and Roy Clark joining Frank, Carl, Pinnacle guy (sorry) and myself. Guy Green somehow managed to slip across a bit later, his presence announced with a shout of ‘Get down the back Nigel!’ – trust me I was trying but they kept leaving a gap for me to fill. James Steward also joined the break, either coming with Guy (most likely) or on his own, but it was now eight in the break, Adriatic with two, Bike Force with two, one each from Celtic Giant, BikeGearNow/VeloEx, O’Mara Cycles and the independent in Pinnacle Cycle colours. Some solid work up front stretched the gap and the legs of our independent friend, the gap growing to almost twenty seconds but the break was down to seven with yours truly trying to adhere to Guy’s advice but occasionally finding myself at the front. The laps came and the laps went, the gap remaining constant, the chase happy to keep their distance and control those who may have had other thoughts. With the laps winding down and the other races finishing our time was imminent and even though

having done as little as possible a quick look around didn’t bring any joy. The break was made up of those who started the race with a chance of finishing it off, with one exception (that’d be me). There was a noticeable shift in the break as the group took the bell, a subtle drop in effort with little change in speed as the race rolled round the corner into Dunlop Road for the last time. Into McDonalds Lane it was time to play the joker, out of the saddle and on the gas and I had a gap that quickly blew out to substantial. Unfortunately it didn’t take long for Ciaran to react and chase; his tail long and winding. On to Geddes it was back together again, a counter attack had me

away again and this time the rest looked too long at each other and I was clear, just had to keep the head down and the pressure on the pedals to take the win. That’s what happened - in my mind, the reality was slightly different, there was no counter attack, there was just pain and a nice big guy in yellow & blue leading out the bunch toward the true sprint. Needless to say I was swamped halfway to the finish. Figures for me: 47.6k in 1:09 for an average of 41.2kph, for the others it was 1k more and maybe a minute too.
