'A fineCommunity Makers

Marshall Neathery is a nurturer of peopleand a student of history.

By Jimmy AllenWake Weekly News Editor

A January morning in 1963 wasan important time in MarshallNeathery's life.lt was on that morning while a

student at Campbell College (now auniversity) when Neathery "got adistinct impression ministry wasmy calling, pastorate calling in par-ticular." Thirty-two years later, heis still a pastor and is serving his21st year at Rolesville BaptistChurch."He is a very sweet, kind, gentle

person," said Laura Pearce, a long-time member of the church. "He'sjust a fine gentleman."Although that January morning

was a key moment, the decisionwasn't surprising. As a teenager hehad gotten involved in leadingyouth at church. Adults would tellhim, "One day you're going to be-come a preacher." Neathery didn'tagree. His love was history, a lovehe shared with his father.. A~ Campbell, Neathery majoredIII history, but he was also active inthe school's Baptist Student Union.A c.ombi~ation of his leadership ex-penence III church, the influence ofhis ministerial friends and the Janu-ary morning caused him to changehis emphasis of study. He didn'tchange his major, but he began tofocus on more religion and historycourses."It was settled in my mind. This

is what God (wanted) in my life."Although he's had some doubts

along the way which he considersnatural, those doubts have neverbecome threats.

During this time, he married KayFrances Currin of Oxford. In September of 1970, a larger

church wanted the young pastor toserve them. For the next four years,Neathery served as pastor of NewSandy Creek Baptist in the Aycockcommunity in Vance County.Much larger than Browns and

close to his native community ofWilliamsbQfP. New Sandy· Creekwas a place Neathery intended tostay. Then a search committee led by

Durwood Jones from RolesvilleBaptist Ch~rc~ came to visit. Thecommittee InVItedhim to give a tri-al sermon at R.olesville. Neatheryagreed. The next month, Rolesvilleoffered him the position. The decision to accept was tough

because Neathery liked New SandyCreek. "But I felt led. Still it wastough."

Uptown RolesvilleRolesville'S history is linked

much more c1o~elyto rural agricul-ture than to a big city of retail com-mcrce. But Rolesville in 1974 wasless rural than What Neathery hadknown.

'My life is a spiritual pil-grimage. Always grow-ing. I've learned a lotfrom the I?eople in thecongregat/~n, from thecommunity, otherpastors. /'1/ never stopgrowing. I hope not. '

_ Marshall Neathery

Duties of a pastor .Neathery, like most pastors, IS a

contradiction to the stereotype of apreacher working six days todeliver a sermon. pastors perform avariety of functions ran~ing fromadministration to counsehng. .A typical day for Neathery beg~s

each morning in the church officewhere he talks to the secretaryabout administrative issues, writesletters talks to staff members, ans-wers ~alls and sometimes m~esphone calls when visits are In-

appropriate.Afternoons are set aside for hoS-

pital visits. .What happens on these visits IS

determined by the person hOSPital-ized. Neathery tries to bring a wordof hope, to let them know otherscare. He also prays for God's blesS-ing upon them.Depending on the situation- the

pastor sometimes has a frie~dlychat. Sometimes a tear. Sometlrneshe asks the patient what he or shewould like the pastor to pray for."Some people will talk to rne

very freely no matter the problern,"he said. These people are easier tohelp, he said. Some people won't get well. ~e

pastor prays for God to give hiscare."I realize how inadequate I am

without God. Without his presenceyou cannot be the minister, the.~~.son you ought to be. The Spirit sgot to be leading."Neathery also believes in refer.

ring patients to counselors whohave a God-given talent to help.At night, Neathery usually at-

tends a church meeting. He also hascounsellin sessions at nigh!. ~ -though the work causes him to stay"pretty late sometimes," Neatherysaid he isn't overworked.Theological development

Holding a fresh diploma an-nouncing his bachelor's degreefrom Campbell, Neathery headed toWake Forest to study at South-eastern Baptist Theological Semi-nary.He graduated in 1969 with a

master of di~inity with languages, but part of his learning experienceoccurr~d at two small churchesnear hIS home community in VanceCounty. The churches were Brownsand Middleburg Baptist.Ordained in 1967 at his home

church of Island Creek Baptist inthe Vance County community ofWilliamsboro, Neathery started"supply preaching," similar to serv-ing as interim pastor, at Browns. The church later joined Middleburgin forming a church field, meaningone pastor serves both. So Neatherywould preach and lead a 9:45 a.m.service at one church and thendrive to the other for an 11 a.m.service. He did this for two years.

1974, Neathery has had three op-portunities to ltave for other chur-ches. "I just iever felt I shouldleave. The mo~ I stay, the more Ilove the area the church. It's aloving congr~gati,on." People aresolid in their jeliefs. The churchhas good leade)'Ship, and it has a lotof children and youth, he said.On most sundays, 250-300

people gather to worship.

Marshall Neathery is the author of three books.

Sunday afternoons. As many as 25migrant workers gather for singing, praying and scripture reading.Helping people develop their

spiritual lives is important,Neathery said. "That's what cantransform society."Knowing his rootsNeathery's father loved oral his-

tory and was a "great story teller."Perhaps that tradition is where

Neathery gets his enjoyment ofwriting and delivering sermons. And perhaps that's where Neatherygets his love for history. His love has spurred Neathery to

write and publish two family his-tories - "Partial History of theNeathery Family" in 1979, and"Neathery, 150 years of History" in1988.His most recent publication

chronicles Neathery's great-grandfather's last days on earth in

ate States of America tells aboutclimbing Cemetery Ridge as part ofPickett's Charge in the Battle ofGettysburg in 1863.

The battle was the deciding factorin the war that divided the Northand the South. Mental anguish fromthe battle and physical pain from a

gunshot wound stayed wit~Neathery's great-grandfather untilhis death. He was one of the few toactually reach the famouS st~newall atop the hill w?ere Umonsoldiers blasted oncomlOg Confed-erates.Neathery's account, called "Over

a Stone Wall " is based on recordedevents. Dialogue is adde~.Although Neathery s great-

grandfather fought for the South.one of Neathery's favorite books ISabout a Union general, Joshua L.Chamberlain of Maine, who alsofought in the Battle of Gettysburg.A college professor be~ore andafter the war, Chamberla10 was .agenuine Christian who kept hlSfaith despite participating in one ofthe most terrible wars, Neatherysaid."(He was) a man who believed

his life was always in the hand ofo ·d. "This

man's life just touched me."

Like Chamberlain, a life of faithis important to Neathery."My life is ~ spiritual pilgrimage.

Always growing. I've learned a lotC:0m the peoPle in the congrega-non, from the community otherpastors. I'll neVer stop gro~ing. Ihope not."
