Exciting News!

McBurney YMCA’s very own Ryan Louis was selected as a Semi-Finalist in the JCPennyCareShareWin contest. Ryan Luis is a high school junior who participates in the McBurney YMCA Y-Scholars program at the Washington Irving high school campus. To become eligible in the competitive JCPennyCareShareWin contest, Ryan wrote an excellent essay about his volunteer work through the McBurney Y-Scholars Summer Camp this past summer with Gods Love We Deliver. As a semi-finalist Ryan has been awarded $3,000 to put towards college and an additional matching $3,000 to Gods Love We Deliver.

Below, please find Ryan's winning essay. We are so proud of him!

My name is Ryan Louis and I currently attend Gramercy Arts High School. I am an African American and I live in Brooklyn, New York with my grandmother and mother. They both suffer from diabetes which is a very common disease among my racial group. Living with them both has given me the chance to see the destructive effects diabetes has on an individual. Therefore I have always possessed the desire to work with people who face these hardships. Over the summer of 2010, I participated in a summer program with the YMCA that gave me the opportunity to fulfill this desire. With the YMCA I worked with a non-profit organization called God’s Love We Deliver (GLWD). At GLWD, there’s a strong, yet simple message being delivered in perfect brown bags: everyone matters.

At GLWD, we give meals to people that are homebound or have specific dietary needs. For example, we cater to people who have diabetes, AIDS/HIV, and other conditions. My favorite activity was creating the personalized birthday cards for the people we were serving. On each patient’s birthday we would send them cake and the cards. This act of kindness, while seemingly small, meant a world of difference to people who are not used to having things come easily. This experience has instilled in me a passion to continue serving the community, and particularly those in need. I am eternally grateful to God’s Love We Deliver for giving me this experience to hone the skills that are essential to helping others.
