At this point, the building is slated to be 19,000 square feet, which includes 9,500 square feet of leasable space per floor. The area of the property where the centre would be situated is already commercial, said Leal.

“The medical centre will be equipped with the latest in electronic medical reporting software systems to accommodate the wants and needs of doctors and our design and planning department will be very flexible in accommodating the leasing requirements of all professionals in the health and medical fields,” Leal said.

He said the announcement couldn’t come at a better time as the centre is close to the downtown, growth is anticipated for the community, and there are ongoing efforts to expand the hospital.

Before presenting his vision to council, Leal talked to Kathryn Mooij, who works with Stevenson Memorial Hospital and the Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee to bring new doctors to the area.

“Anything that will bring more healthcare to our community is positive,” said Mooij. “The challenge will be to fill it.”

In her talk with Leal, she said incorporating technology such as the electronic medical reporting is important to have.
