Sustainable Development on Consumption and
Sustainability (1) - (texts Nr. 31, March 2010)
„without sustainable consumption there is no sustainable development “.This should reflect itself in a strategy for sustainability. The development of an indicator for sustainable consumption is necessary. In the meantime the average CO2-emissions per capita may be used as an indicator “. (p.7)
„the most important methodological instrument for an indicator is the reporting procedure of ‚CO2-footprints‘“. (S.7)

SZENARIO „TREND“ (present energy politics and announced action programs):
continues the trend of the past years, following the action program „Klimaschutz 2020“, and the national action plan Efficency (NAPE).
The comparison of two scenarios show the growing need for action for a successfulcontinuation of the „Energiewende“in Germany
SZENARIO „100“ (active and engaged Energy politics with focus on the total system):fulfills the goals of the energy concept 2020 and, in contrast, to SZENARIO „TREND“ the goals for 2050 with a 80% reduction of the GHG-emissions in 2050

Enegiewende= energy turn-around, exit from fossil and nuclear fuels

With the present energy politics even the climate goals 2020 are missed ;If this trend continues, then there will be growing difference between the 2 scenarios

The main problem: climate protection functions only with correct energy pricesThe environmental costs of fossil electricity production are much higher those produced with renewable
sources , however, the environmental costs do not show on the electricity bill.
At this time ~ 4 €/t
Electricity production costswithout environmental costs:
coal: 5 – 7 ct/kWhgas: 6 – 8 ct/kWh
With environmental costs:
Soft coal: 15 -16 ct/kWhHard coal: 14 -15 ct/kWhGas: 11 -12 ct/kWh
Mix of renewable energies:
2013: 13 ct/kWh2020: 9-10 ct/kWh2050: 6-7 ct/kWh

• The question: Is 1 ton of GHG/citizen realistic, can only be answered in several stages.
• Within the field of housing (heating, hot water, household electricity consumption) extremely low GHG emissions are already possible (passive house, pellets,... ).
• When all fields of consumption are considered, about five tons per citizen can be realized nowadays.
• A long-term reduction to 1 ton per capita and year is theoretically possible for Germany .
• To actually achieve these long-term objectives, the acceptance of climate protection plays a crucial role . Only when the individual "behavior" supports also the social objectives and measures the „1 ton society“ can be realized.
