We pray the Prayer forIllumination just beforethe reading of scripture. In this prayer, we askGod to speak to usthrough the words ofscripture and thesermon. We pray forillumination so that wemay be able to seethings we couldn’t seebefore.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Dr. Speed

OLD TESTAMENT (ANTHEM): Jubilate Deo in D Robert RothChancel Choir

O be joyful in the LORD, all ye lands: serve the LORD with gladness, and come before hispresence with a song. Be ye sure that the LORD he is God; it is he that hath made us, and not weourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. O go your way into his gates withthanksgiving, and into his courts with praise; be thankful unto him and speak good of his Name. For the LORD is gracious, his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth from generation togeneration. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in thebeginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

[Psalm 100, with Gloria Patri]

NEW TESTAMENT Ephesians 4:25—5:2(pew Bible, page 194, NT)

Leader: The Word of the Lord.People: Thanks be to God.

Led by LOVESERMON “To Be Kind” Dr. Speed

RESPONDING TO THE WORD

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from A Declaration of Faith Rev. SchaafLeader: God sends us to exercise compassion. In God’s concern for justice in the

social order God has never forgotten the needs of individuals.Women: In the end the Lord will judge all persons by the simple, unremembered acts

of kindness they did or failed to do for the least of their sisters and brothers.Men: We acknowledge God is at work here and now when people show

personal concern for each other and work to make helping agencies, including the church itself, more compassionate.

Women: We believe God sends us to risk our own peace and comfort in compassionfor our neighbors.

Men: We are to give to them and receive from them, accepting everyone wemeet as a person; to be sensitive to those who suffer in body or mind;to help and accept help in ways that affirm dignity and responsibility.

All: We must not limit our compassion to those we judge deserving, for weourselves do not deserve the compassion of God.

INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP(Please sign and pass the Ritual of Friendship Register at this time

so that we might know your concerns and keep you informedabout the life and ministry of this community of faith.)

Thine, LORD, is wisdom, Thine alone. Justice and truth before Thee stand: Yet nearer to Thysacred throne, Mercy withholds Thy lifted hand. Each evening shows Thy tender love, Eachrising morn Thy plenteous grace; Thy wakened wrath doth slowly move, Thy willing mercy fliesapace. To Thy benign, indulgent care, Father, this light, this breath we owe; And all we have andall we are, From Thee, great Source of being, flow. Thrice Holy, Thine the kingdom is, Thepower omnipotent is Thine; And when created nature dies, Thy never-ceasing glories shine.

we find the words to talk about what we believe? 2. Create a safe place to study and question. This

class requires a willingness to seek. Questions, doubts and uncertainty are welcome anddesirable.

3. Actively integrate our personal lives and our faith. This class will be personal. We will seek tointegrate our personal stories with God’s story.Active participation and reflection is critical.

4. Form a community of nurture and care. If wemanage our first three goals, hopefully the HolySpirit will create a grateful and caring community. We will try to be mindful of what it means to livethe faith we talk about.

If you are willing to make the commitment to regularattendance and personal participation, these are ambitiousbut attainable goals. Come join us. You can sign up bycalling the church office (404.378.1777) or emailing Vernon([email protected]).
