The young men from Ridgewood and Coshocton deserve congratulations and a hearty “job well done!” And to all the parents, coaches, advisors, assistants, cheerleaders, band members, booster clubs and everyone that contributed to this wonderful season of
dreams, thanks. This will truly be a year of memories for everyone. Both the Redskins and Generals raised their level of play each week and perhaps it is fi tting that the season ended for both teams in the state semi-fi nal game. Fans from the entire county went to see each team play, enduring cold and wind on the fi nal weekend of play. What many outsiders may not know is that each of our local teams probably played the eventual state champion – and a school that focuses on recruiting top football talent in their respective area. Yes, admit it – this does
happen in high school sports. This takes absolutely nothing away from the Redskins or Generals – in fact, it only raises the level of respect that everyone in this small community should have for these fi ne young men and their respective coaches. Great job boys. The entire community is proud of your efforts this season. Speaking of sports, what the heck is Tiger Woods up to? Surely you have heard by now of the accusations, gossip and his escapades at 2:30 am in the morning. Tiger supposedly refused to see – it was called “cancelled” - an appointment with the police. 2:30 am in the morning? Tiger, Tiger, you are a role model here. We will wait and see what happened before we pass judgment. As we have said before in this column – be sure you choose your role models and the people that you hold up to your children as role models – very carefully. Maybe it should be someone that rings the bells for The Salvation Army, builds homes for Habitat for Humanity or contributes to their community by working with kids – you get the idea. No, none of these are high profi le - but it sure is downright worthwhile and vital to a healthy community. Did you survive “Black Friday”? What a term for the day after Thanksgiving. All joking aside, I have not yet started the holiday shopping – and who knows when I will get to it. With basketball season starting, our daughter getting married the weekend before Christmas and all those other events that tend to pop up over the holiday’s – maybe I will just wear antlers and “present” myself as a dear. And speaking of deer – welcome hunters to Coshocton County! The annual pilgrimage to our area is one made by folks from far and wide – just drive around and look at the many out of county license plates. We are glad you are here investing in our community and wish you much hunting success – so we don’t hit as many of the furry four legged critters on the highways and byways of Coshocton County.

Lion’s club performs 52nd annual Minstrel Show
The Warsaw Lions Minstrel Show, held the weekend before Thanksgiving, once again proves that Coshocton County is blessed with a myriad of the talented – and the well intentioned. Based on a platform of musical comedy, vocal acts, humor and skits, the Warsaw Lions Minstrel Show brings all that is good about our community together for a weekend of hearty laughter. Under the direction of Jean Haumschild, the performers and musicians willingly give up nights and weekends practicing their fabled lore. To hear the various soloists is worth the price the of admission alone but when that is combined with monikers like, “Corn Cob”, “Choo Choo”, and others, then this event is truly worth more than the price of admission. And if you are one of the lucky few in the audience to be jabbed with a joke, then you truly feel special. All of the performers in the Warsaw Lions Minstrel Show deserve big congratulations for another humorous and talented performance. Elaine Ashcraft was selected as this year’s Minstrel Show volunteer for the many hours she invested in making costumes for the event, most notably the “YMCA” outfit for Denny Conkle.

Travel back in time at Roscoe’s candlelighting ceremoniesCheer on the holiday season at Roscoe Village the fi rst three Saturdays in December during the annual Christmas Candlelighting Ceremonies. This year, the Roscoe Village Foundation will host the Dec. 5 Candlelighting, and the Dec. 12 and Dec. 19 candlelightings will be hosted by the Roscoe Village Business Association. A favorite among guests and locals alike, the Candlelightings begin promptly at 6 p.m. each Saturday evening at the outdoor Main Stage area. During the ceremony on Dec. 5, traditional carols will be sung by the Sacred Heart Choir and Ensemble, and a cherished Christmas story will be read by Gene Warman, president of Gene Warman Production Services, Inc. in Columbus. The Honorary Candlelighter for the Dec. 5 Christmas Candlelighting ceremony is State Representative, Troy Balderson. Carolers on Dec. 5 will include River View High School’s Certifi ed Gold under the direction of Dawn Anglin and the River View German Club led by Karri Harstine. Holiday entertainment in the Founders Gallery, located in the Visitor Center, will consist of the Todd Taylor Christmas Show from 2 – 3 p.m., Sisters of Salvation from 3 – 4 p.m. and Jenna and Jessica Billman from 4 – 5 p.m. Two Harps, Brenda and Paul Neal, will be playing in the Exhibit Hall from noon – 2 p.m. while Santa is doing art with children of all ages. Guests will also have the opportunity to experience a truly old-fashioned Christmas through carriage rides, roasted chestnut, luminaries, Art with Santa, complimentary hot-mulled cider and cookies, and “A Roscoe Christmas” tour at 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 3 p.m.

Coshocton Hospital is pleased to be at the top of the American Heart Association’s list of 2009 Fit-Friendly companies. They are the only company in Coshocton County and one of three in the region to earn this honor. The American Heart Association’s Start! Fit-Friendly Companies Recognition program calls for employers to encourage workplace wellness and create a work environment conducive to physical activity, specifi cally walking. Many adult Americans spend most of their waking hours at work, and many are in sedentary careers, thus raising their risk for a host of medical problems such as obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes. Employers face ever-increasing healthcare costs such as $12.7 billion in annual medical expenses due to obesity alone. Employees often have diffi culty fi nding time to take care of their health. Start! provides a solution by encouraging them to start walking. Walking has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity because it’s free and easy to do. Coshocton Hospital’s participation in the program included participation in the Healthy Ohio Fitness Walk program in May, providing Nutrition and Weight Management education programs, incorporating signage to encourage uses of stairs rather than elevators, featuring wellness articles in employee newsletters. The Start! Fit-Friendly Companies Program offers participants free access to program resources, such as materials to promote wellness programs to employees, internal newsletter templates and consultation on CPR/AED programs.

coshocton health & Rehabilitation center wins awardCoshocton Health & Rehabilitation and Nursing Center won the Kindred Peak Award (Performance Excellence At Kindred). The Peak Award is giving to the best overall performing nursing home in any district during a 6-month period. Each Kindred facility is ranked based on several key factors centered around quality such as low incidents of urinary tract infection, few increases in activities of daily living, the absence of pressure ulcers, customer satisfaction scores and other survey results. It is important to note that a higher weight is placed on quality to assure the centers focus on the resident’s care. The facility that has the best rating in all of the combined areas is awarded the Peak Award. There is intense competition among the Kindred facilities for the Peak Award. The facility that wins has a celebration party for the staff members during which they receive a $100 bonus check. Debbie Ianniello, STNA said, “I’m so proud that our facility was awarded the peak award. This shows that we are doing a great job of working as a team providing quality care and making Coshocton Health & Rehabilitation Center a great facility for our residents. Our staff members work so very hard each and every day to give care that our residents deserve.” This is the second Quality Award that the center has been awarded in 2009. Earlier this year the center was recognized nationally for the Step I American Health Care Quality Award. Coshocton Health & Rehabilitation Center specializes in providing Occupational, Speech, and Physical therapies for area residents in an effort to get them back home after hospitalizations.

Fresno Farmers Market helps kick off “Toys for Tots” campaignThe Fresno Farmers Market helped kick off the “Coshocton County Toys for Tots” 2009 toy drive on Saturday, Nov. 7. A basket of items donated by local vendors was auctioned at the Fresno Farmers Market fall craft bazaar. Cash donations were also accepted at the door. Pearl Valley Cheese provided a gift certificate that was good for a ¾ pound piece of their locally made cheese for each donation of $2 or more. Dave Warren, a local vendor, donated all of this October proceeds to the “Toys for Tots” cause. The grand total donated to the “Coshocton County Toys for Tots” was $530 and twenty new toys. Christi Olinger, who heads up the local “Toys for Tots” effort, expressed her appreciation to the Fresno Farmers Market and everyone who helped with this year’s effort.
River view class donates pies to new Life Ministries

emergency Medical Training at coTc Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) will offer the Emergency Medical Training-EMT Basic Certificate at its Coshocton Campus spring quarter 2010. Classes will begin March 29. This certificate program is a six credit-hour, one-quarter course that will be offered in the evening through COTC’s Institute for Public Safety. Students completing the course will be eligible to apply to take the National Registry of Medical Training Basic exam. Placement out of pre-college reading class on the COMPASS placement exam is a prerequisite for enrollment. If needed, students may take a basic reading skills course winter quarter. Those who complete the coursework and pass the National Registry exam for their particular level of preparation are eligible for employment in hospitals, ambulance services and fire departments. Important student characteristics include: effective communication skills, critical and creative thinking, attention to detail, and physical and emotional stamina. conesville elementary celebrates grandparents Day C o n e s v i l l e Elementary celebrated the gift of grandparents on Monday, Nov. 23 and Tuesday, Nov. 24 at their 2nd annual grandparent’s day luncheon. Over three hundred grandparents were expected to take part in the event this year. The meal started at 11 a.m. and lasted until 12:45 p.m. with different grades eating at assigned times. “My kids love it,” said Casey Griffin, volunteer, “They’ve talked about it all week long and they look forward to this every year. 10-YeaR-oLD BagS RaRe DeeR 10 year old Jordan olinger harvested this albino deer behind his home on Saturday of the annual youth deer hunt. olinger said about his deer, “it felt good, especially being that it is an albino. this is the first albino I’ve ever seen”. Olinger said the shot was about 20 to 30 yards and “I was nervous”. This is not Olingers first hunting experience. He has been trap-ping raccoon and muskrat and successfully trapped a 40 inch raccoon earlier in the week”. The shops will not be selling items, but are there so visitors will be able to see how various items were made back in biblical times. Shops such as jewelry, bakery, sandal shop, toys, music, perfumes, mosaics, food, dyes, grain mill and ropemaking will be on display for your entertainment. This old Bethlehem town will have shopkeepers, townsfolk, tax collectors, beggars, soldiers, and shepherds, all in period costume, ready to interact with you and give you a glimpse into their time. Children will also be able to make small mementos at various shops to take home as a Christmas keepsake. They can also collect small figurines along the way to build their own Nativity set. The Emmanuel Lutheran Church has been doing this for three years now and their goal is to let visitors experience the true meaning of Christmas and to get away from the commercialism that seems to have engrossed this religious holiday. Over two hundred people visited A Night in Bethlehem last year and the church hopes to have even more this year. They also want to invite visitors to church on Sunday mornings if they are searching for a home church, or just to visit.

Coshocton High School Principal Bill Hartmeyer exclaimed, “It’s running very smoothly this year. We’ve gotten better at organizing this event. When we do this it’s for people that don’t have a lot but it’s also for people to come back and interact with the kids. This meal teaches the kids to serve and to be polite”. One of the main organizers of the community dinner is Cathy Waibel, who stated, “No tax money is used for this meal. Everything is donated by businesses and people in the community, whether that is through a monetary donation or food. We send out a letter and then I follow that up with phone calls. Each student group here at the high school gets involved; athletic teams, Key Club, student council, National Honor Society, leadership club and many, many others. We just appreciate everyone who donated and came out tonight to help”. This was the sixth annual community Thanksgiving dinner hosted by the high school. The Coshocton music department provided entertainment during the meal.

Becky Shroyer, Volunteer Coordinator and Imogene Wilson represented the Pink Ladies by attending the “50’s Plus” recent event at the Coshocton Village Inn & Suites. Becky reminded the group of the Pink Ladies Christmas Luncheon will be Dec. 22 in The Grand Central Station at noon. The cost will be $8 with reservations requested by calling Becky Shroyer at 622-6411 by Dec. 18. The group agreed to donate $200 to the “Christmas Castle” project. The “Book Fair” and Election Day “Bake Sale” fund raisers were successful. The annual Christmas Cookie Sale to be Dec. 18 beginning at 7 a.m. located in the Grand Central
Station. However a “drive through” cookie pickup will be available at the Orange Street entrance. President Fuller reminded the group that a Shop Chairman for Sunday and a Desk Chairman for Sunday, Tuesday and Saturday are greatly needed.Baby shirts have been given to 15 babies through Nov. 23. There were ten boys and fi ve girls. The next meeting will be Jan. 25, 2010 in the Grand Central Station at 10 a.m.

Calvary Baptist dedicates flagsMembers of Calvary Baptist Church gathered under beautiful sunny skies on Sunday morning, Nov. 29 to dedicate the American flag, Ohio flag and the Christian flag. The three flags are located next to the outside shelter at the church. Pastor Cal Searles stated, “We are Americans because of those that have sacrificed before us. It is very rare that you will see all three flags displayed together. What a privilege and honor it is to have these flags on this ground. As you drive by the church and see the flags it is our hope that people will look to the flag – and God’s grace. We can do this because of the sacrifice of our soldiers and our Savior”. Pastor Searles thanked members of the Gibson family who allowed the project to be initiated and Nancy Lawson who secured the flags and poles from Annin & Company. Steve Stuckey will be installing lighting that will shine on the flags during the hours of darkness. Pastor Searles expressed appreciation to everyone that helped with the flags, including, Ron Meek, John Shepherd, Tim Searles and Larry Fox, who oversaw the project. “What a great day, what a great country and what a great Savior”. The congregation joined in the pledge of allegiance, a pledge to the Christian flag and then sang “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” and the Star Spangled Banner.

gimme Shelter exhibition announces award-winnersThe Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum is pleased to announce the award winners for outstanding artwork in Gimme Shelter, a juried art exhibit that runs through Jan. 3. Gimme Shelter features artwork on the theme of shelter, interpreted broadly to include conceptions of cover, protection and refuge. The show includes work from 12 adult and 7 young artists. In the adult group, prizes were awarded to the following artists: in Two-Dimensional Art: Karen Alles (Powell, OH), in Sculpture: Todd Malenke (Fresno, OH), and in Photography: Robert Studzinski (Bexley, OH). Alles’s winning acrylic and sand painting, Sunrise Storm, is an abstract landscape of turbulent waves in brilliant reds and greens. Chop Wood, Carry Water, Malenke’s winning forged iron and stone sculpture, gives the impression of a Chinese pavilion with its sloping roof and upturned corners. Malenke has given the roof a thatched texture and a patina in rainbow colors creating an impression of elegant warmth. Robert Studzinski’s photograph, The Desert is Coming, shows a man, sitting in a rock shelter, who is looking out over a plain. The photo was taken in Mali (in the center of West Africa) while Studzinski was documenting traditional textile making with a University of California research expedition. The man in the picture, a Dogon guide, was observing how the desert is steadily expanding in to the Gondo plain below. Studzinski notes the sad truth that desertification of the Sahel has been accelerating for the past 40 years. Winners in the children’s group were Joey Chanay (9) for his turtle made from tissue paper, Abbey Warschauer (12) for her photograph entitled Front Porch, and Justin DeLuca (15) for his photograph, Seeking Shelter from the Cold. While Abbey’s photo is noteworthy because of its simplicity—the camera’s eye takes in a bare, white-painted front porch with windows that reveal a tree-lined street, Justin’s photograph is exceptional in its complexity. The image has been digitally manipulated so that a person’s face is transposed on a fireplace scene. Gimme Shelter includes artwork from the museum’s collection that addresses the theme of shelter. The exhibit also highlights the work of Habitat for Humanity in Coshocton County using photos, floor plans and interpretative materials. Most of the show’s artwork is for sale and all profits from sales will be split between the museum and Coshocton’s Habitat chapter. Exhibit sponsors are McCourt Insurance Restoration, DJ & Woodie’s Vinyl Frontier and Raven’s Glenn Winery.

“it’s going to be big”: new Life delivers over 400 Thanksgiving meals
As the smell of Thanksgiving Day roasting turkey wafted through the rooms and spaces of New Life Ministries on Seventh Street, Pastor Mark Granger directed the dozens of volunteers like a symphony orchestra conductor to various stations where they could help those less fortunate in our community. With over 400 meals to be delivered on Thanksgiving morning, Pastor Granger stated, “The phone calls are still coming in. People like to help. It’s been a hard year for people – but people are excited about getting a good meal today. We’re just thankful for all the volunteers – they just show up. Our deliveries will start at 10:30 this morning and our meal will be served at noon – we have sweet potatoes, turkey, desserts, rolls and much more”.

Coshocton County Master Gardener volunteers were recognized for their many accomplishments in 2009 on Nov. 18 at the Career Center Restaurant. A pictorial history of the Coshocton MGVs was presented by Dorothy Skowrunski. Bill and Carol Freund were recognized as the state winners of 2009 Friends of the OSU Extension Master Gardener Volunteer program. They have donated countless plants, bulbs, time and experience to the Master Gardener Volunteer program in Coshocton County.Nivarde Hafner, Anna & Joe Hardesty and Gail Piper were awarded “200 Hours” tabs to attach to their Master Gardener lapel pins. They have each contributed at least 200 hours of volunteering since becoming OSU Extension Master Gardener volunteers. Teresa Donley and Marcia Mercer were presented with “250 Hours” tabs; BeLinda Lacy received a “300 Hours” tab; Betty Williams and Janice Williams both received a “400 Hours” tabs; Susan McCurdy received her “450 hours” pin, and Margaret Lowe received a “500 Hours” tab. Tim France also received an award for donating the Most Volunteer Hours in 2009: 104.25 hours. The award for Most Education Hours for 2009 went to Barb Caldwell. She has attended 78 hours of educational training and was also awarded.

Pastor Mark Schwartz of Camp Warsaw Retreat Center said, “We’ve
had about 10 widows and four seniors that have physical struggles. We’re full all day and every spot is taken. We’ll provide services to 17 area folks in need today”. A local woman who was having the oil changed in her vehicle told The Beacon, “It’s awesome. It’s really nice and appreciated”.

Christmas in the Village. Saturday, Dec. 5 is Christ-mas in the Village with pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. at the United Methodist Church sponsored by the West Lafayette Lions Club. 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. a Craft Show at Ridgewood High School sponsored by Club Aries and at 1 p.m. a Santa Parade sponsored by West Lafay-ette Chamber of Commerce. Santa will travel to the bandstand in Burt Park to visit with everyone after the parade.
Shelter matters! -- Museum Encounter for Children. Youth 7 years and up are invited to the Johnson-Hum-rickhouse Museum at 2 p.m. on Dec. 12 for Shelter Matters!, a program about dwellings past and present that are used by people in different cultures. We will begin by viewing the special exhibit, Gimme Shelter, which features artwork on the theme of shelter and an art installation entitled Dream Shelter. Participants will then examine other means of housing/shelter using the American Indian, Historic Ohio and Asian Galleries. We will also discuss the role of Habitat for Humanity in the world and our own need of shelter. During the program’s second hour participants will create an edible birdhouse and produce a fl oor plan of their own dwellings. Program cost is $7; Call for reservations by Dec. 9th at 622-8710.
