A Word From Pope Francis“By accepting himself according to God’s design, Joseph fully finds himself, beyond himself. His freedom to renounce even what is his, the possession of his very life, …challenge us and show us the way.”

Why is St. Joseph called “the Worker?” Shouldn’t he be honored primarily as the father of Jesus?

Devotion to St. Joseph has developed along an interesting path. It was not until the eighth century that Joseph, underneath the title “Spouse

of Mary,” was even publicly acknowledged—except perhaps as an afterthought or silent participant in the Christmas story. The Church has always acknowledged that Joseph’s relationship with Jesus was unique, but there was,

and continues to be, reluctance to call him the father of Jesus. We understand the father of Jesus is not Joseph but rather God the Father.

A consensus about Joseph’s role in the plan of salvation seems to be in place by the early fourteenth century. In 1870, Pope Pius IX declared Joseph the patron of the

universal Church. By the early twentieth century, worldwide devotion had found a home at St. Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal.

The title of “the Worker” was used most often by Pope Pius XI in his references to Joseph as the patron of the Church’s battle against atheistic communism. Pope Pius XII established the May 1 feast in 1955 to emphasize the Catholic teaching concerning the dignity of labor.

Saint Joseph could be summarized best as a man who did the best he could when God’s will became clear. This image and model seems the best and most helpful for deepening our understanding of and devotion to him.

Hearing Loop Now Available People with hearing loss often struggle to catch the words and softer sounds during the performance. With the echo in the church, even people with normal hearing have trouble understanding the spoken word. The new Induction Loop System will give people a distinct advantage in these circumstances—it works with the individual's t-coil equipped hearing aids. The sound is broadcast through a wire installed throughout the church. A small coil of wire in the hearing aid, called a t-coil, is the receiver. While the listener is located within the field created by the loop wire, the t-coil in the hearing aid will receive the signal from the loop. Individuals with any type and degree of hearing loss and any t-coil-equipped hearing aid can take advantage of this Loop technology. Background noise and echo are no longer a problem. To utilize this technology all you need to do is switch your hearing aid to t-coil.

We also have hand sets available for your use that require a headset to use them. Just bring in your headset with a standard jack, ask an usher for a loop device and plug the headset in for easier listening. If you have problems or questions please contact the parish office at 616-891-9259.

Surgery or Illness: If you or a loved one are hospitalized, in a nursing facility, having surgery, or experiencing an illness, please contact Christine Shafer in the parish office by phone or email so that we may pray for you, offer you our parish care ministries, set up the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick when appropriate, or offer Eucharist to the homebound where needed. Most hospitals have Holy Communion ministers arranged if you ask for this while there, but if you need help getting this arranged, please let us know.
