As temperatures drop ice fishing opportunities beginand anglers run to grab their gear. Please be remindedthat live bait fish cannot legally be transported across statelines, into or out o Montana (Montana ARM 12.7.201(5)). Minnows must be purchased or collected within theeastern fishing district or approved waters in the centralfishing district o Montana. Tis can make using themmore difficult to those living in one state and fishing justacross the border in Montana. Te reason the regulationwas put into place was to protect valuable fisheries and theexperiences they provide.

Te regulation is in place in order to reduce the risko spreading vectors, spreading aquatic invasive species(AIS) or illegal fish introduction which could threatenthe established population, says Mike Backes, Region 7Fisheries Manager. Te AIS o highest current concernare zebra/quagga mussels, Asian carp, VHS and aquaticnoxious weeds, e.g., Eurasian Watermiloil. Preventionis the key management tool. Unortunately when AIS orillegal fish introduction is established, eradication is costlyand ofen impossible. Most anglers recognize should a fishery be contaminated

in any o these ways, we would see a quick, drastic changeor be witness to a slow, demise o the current fishery.Either way, the balance would be thrown off and changewould be inevitable. For example, in areas where EurasianWatermiloil has been confirmed, additional bait collectionand transportation restrictions have been established. I dont believe any angler wants to see their resourceaffected in these ways, whether by decreased angler opportunityrom biological changes or additional regulations.

    Minnows may not be imported

Older Montanans at Risk in Extremely Cold We Almost everyone knows about winter dangers such as broken bones rom alls on ic y steps, sidewalksor streets. But cold weather also can cause a potentiallydeadly, and less obvious danger that can affect olderpeople hypothermia. Older adults are especiallyvulnerable to hypothermia. Hypothermia occurs when a persons bodytemperature drops below normal or a period otime. With advancing age, the bodys ability to handleexposure to cold weather is lowered.

Older people are at risk or hypothermiabecause their bodys response to cold weather canbe diminished by certain illnesses (such as diabetes)and some medicines (including over-the-counter coldremedies). In addition, older adults are ofen less activeand thereore generate less body heat. As a result, they can develop hypothermia even afer exposure tomoderately cold weather or even just a small drop intemperature. For the elderly, disabled, and those with specialneeds, the cold weather means its harder to get to thepharmacy, shovel snow, or run to the grocery store. Now is the time to be a good neighbor by checking inon your elderly neighbors to make sure theyre copingwell, said Joy Bruck, AARP Montana State President.

I would recommend that you check in with them tosee i they need anything picked up rom the store ori they need other help, such as getting to a doctorsappointment. It is also critical to make sure their heatis turned up enough. Te symptoms o hypothermia include conusionor sleepiness, slowed or slurred speech, shivering orstiffness in the arms and legs, weak pulse, poor controlover body movements or slow reactions. I you suspectthat someone is suffering rom the cold and you havea thermometer available, take his or her temperature.I its 96 degrees or lower, call 911 or emergency help.Otherwise, i they are exhibiting some or all o thesesymptoms, get proessional medical help immediately. Te National Institute on Aging (NIA) (part o

the National Institutes o Health) offers the ollowingadvice to help older people avoid hypothermia:Wear several layers o loose clothing when it is cold.Te layers will trap warm air between them. ightclothing can keep blood rom flowing reely and leadto loss o body heat. Wear a hat, scar, gloves or mittens, and warm

clothes when you go outside in cold weather. A

significant amount o your body heatthrough your head. Hands and eet body parts to get cold.

o keep warm at home, wear long under your clothes, along with socks aUse a blanket or aghan to keep legs anwarm and wear a hat or cap indoors.

Make sure your home is warm enouthermostat to at least 68 to 70 demildly cool homes with temperatur

to 65 degrees can trigger hypothermpeople.

Check with your doctor to see i any m(prescription or over the counter) yomay increase your risk or hypotherm
