PRESIDENTPRESIDENTPRESIDENTPRESIDENTPRESIDENT’S REPORT’S REPORT’S REPORT’S REPORT’S REPORT

Greg Bryant SC480

G’day fellow Subi fans,We’ve decided to cancel this month’s General Meeting owing to a case of bad timing, but to make up for it we’ll be having a sausage sizzle immediately before the Januarymeeting. The Christmas Party at Double Island Point was a huge success - especially thanksto Leon and his father Nuku and the rest of Leon’s family for organising the hangi -what a feast! There’s a busy programme of events in the coming months, including a number ofclub favourites. New Years Eve at Bribie starts off the year with a bang or two offireworks - it should be a fun night.Night drives are not a regular occurrence on our calender, so the night trip to MtMee, with dinner beforehand at the Dayboro pub, will be an educational experiencefor many. It sounds to me like a much better way of spending a warm summer’sevening than sitting in front of the box.Wishing you and the family all the best for Christmas and the festive season. Pleasetake it safe on the roads when travelling so you can return home unscathed. And maythe Subaru stars shine upon you.

ST JOHNS AMBULANCE FIRST AID COURSE/SOur clubs training officer, John McKenna, is currently looking into the possibilty of holding a StJohns Ambulance First Aid Course at the club house for anybody interested. A date hasn’t beenset yet as we first need to register our interest with John. We need a minimum of 8 people to goahead with a booking. Basic details are as follows:

$130 Full Course - Senior First Aid - 15 hours (most likely over a 2 day weekend). A Senior First Aidqualification, valid for three years, is issued to successful participants.

$95 Refresher Course - Senior First Aid - 8 hours. This course will update and refresh you SeniorFirst Aid skills and renew your qualification for a further three years. NOTE: Only one Senior FirstAid Refresher qualification will be issued between two Senior First Aid qualifications.

I’m sure you will all agree it is definately a worthwhile way to spend a weekend in exchange forsome invaluable training. Please phone John McKenna on 07-3398 3019 or 0419 652 053 assoon as you are able if you are remotely interested in attending. The sooner we are aware ofnumbers the sooner John can organise the training if we have enough people interested. A randomdate at this stage may be sometime in March. If you have never done a first aid course, have a chatto someone who has and I’m sure they’ll let you know, it’s not difficult or scary and actually can bequite fun! So give John a call.

Hi Readers,As I write my editors report, it is only one week until Christmas! I know we say itevery year - but WOW, hasn’t that year passed by quick.I’d like to thank our advertisers for their continued support. A big thankyou also, toall members for their dedication and enthusiasm for their club. From the editorsdesk, thankyou to all who have sent submissions for the magazine. Please, keepthem coming next year!Don’t forget to check out the clubs upcoming trips which are continuing over theChristmas/New Year break. First up, a trip to Bribie Island for the family on NewYears Eve. The event starts at 5pm (although we’ll probably trek over a little earlierto secure our “posi”) See “What’s On” for more details. Second and last trip for theschool holidays is our trip to Bargara on Friday 13th January and concluding onSunday 15th January. Bargara is just east of Bundaburg and not far from the fabulous“Mon Repos” turtle hatchery. Bundaburg itself, of course, is the home of the famousBundaburg Rum Distillery. Both of these are on our itinery as well as a trip to thebeach for the kids and later each afternoon we have “happy hour” and a game of“Boules” at the Bargara Beach Caravan Park where we will be staying. Again, check“What’s On” for more details.Kids, have you sent your letters to Santa? If not, don’t forget to tell santa that mumor dad would probably like a new Subaru. Maybe a WRX or possibly a new Outback? What’s that you say? Have we been good?Define “good”.....Wishing everybody a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY, HEALTHY ANDPROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!

SOCIAL DIRECTORSOCIAL DIRECTORSOCIAL DIRECTORSOCIAL DIRECTORSOCIAL DIRECTOR’S REPORT’S REPORT’S REPORT’S REPORT’S REPORTFirst off this month I wish all Club members and their families a merry andsafe Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year. Also, don’t forgetthere is no GM this month as it falls on Boxing Day. The next GM will beJanuary and it will also be a sausage sizzle. Secondly thanks to Grant Rogersfor starting off the Club year, the calender is pretty well set out for the restof the year. But, still, if you have an idea for a trip, be it any type, let meknow. Running a trip is not as hard as you may think. As we go through theyear, some trips and dates may change from the future calender dates, sokeep a close eye on What’s On.

January is full for trips, starting off with seeing the New Year in on BribieIsland, followed by a visit to Bundaberg to see the Turtle hatchlings. Thelast trip for the month is a great one for new members to Condamine Gorgeand the surrounding area.

See you on a trip soon.

Fun StuffFun StuffFun StuffFun StuffFun StuffEMIGRATING TO AUSTRALIAThe diary of an English migrant that’s only been here a short time. Oh and by the way - Queensland has longbeen described as known as ‘Beautiful one Day, Perfect the next’. Obviously its not everyones cup of tea...SEPTEMBER 1STSaid goodbye to England a few weeks ago now and have been loving life in Brisbane! Now this is a city thatknows how to live! Beautiful sunny days and warm balmy evenings. What a place! Watched the sunset froma deck chair on my veranda tonight, it was beautiful. I’ve finally found my home, I love it here.SEPTEMBER 13THReally heating up now. Got to 32 today. Not a problem, live in an air-conditioned house, drive an air conditionedcar to an air conditioned office. What a pleasure to see the sun every day like this. I’m turning into a sunworshipper.SEPTEMBER 30THHad the backyard landscaped with tropical plants. What a breeze to maintain. Another scorcher today but Ilove it here.OCTOBER 10THIt’s not been below 30c all week. How do people get used to the heat? At least today was a bit windy but it’staking longer than I thought to adjust to the heat and humidity.OCTOBER 15THFell asleep by the pool and got 3rd degree burns over 60% of my body. Missed 3 days of work. What a dumbthing to do. Got to respect a climate like this.OCTOBER 20THI missed Kitty (our cat) sneaking into the car when I left this morning. By the time I got to the hot car at lunchKitty had died and swollen up to the size of a shopping bag. The car now smells like Wiskettes and cat shit.Learned my lesson, no more pets in the heat.OCTOBER 25THThe wind sucks. It feels like a giant bloody blow dryer! It’s hot as hell. The home air conditioner is on the blinkand the AC repairman charged $200 just to drive over and tell me he needed to order parts.OCTOBER 30THBeen sleeping outside by the pool for 3 nights now. Bloody $450,000 house and we can’t even go inside. Why did I ever come here?NOVEMBER 4THIts 35 degrees. Finally got the air con fixed today. It cost $500 to get the temperature down to 25, but thishumidity make it fell like 30! Stupid repairman, I hate this stupid place.NOVEMBER 8THIf another wise arse cracks, “Hot enough for you today?” I’m going to strangle him. Bloody heat. By the timeI get to work my cars radiator was boiling over, my clothes are soaking wet and I smell like baked cat!!NOVEMBER 9THWent out after work. Wore shorts and sat on the black leather seats in the car. I thought my arse was on fire.I lost 2 layers of flesh and all the hair on the back of my legs and my arse. Now the car smells like burnt hair, fried arse and baked cat.NOVEMBER 10THThe weather report might as well be a bloody recording. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. It’sbeen too hot to do anything for 2 damn months and the weatherman says it might really ‘warm up’ next week.Doesn’t it ever rain?NOVEMBER 14THWelcome to HELL!!! Temperature got to 36 today. Now the air con has gone in my car. The repair man cameto fix it and said “hot enough for you today?” My wife had to spend the $2500 house payment to bail my arseout of jail for assaulting the repairman. Bloody Brisbane. What kind of sick demented idiot would want to livehere?DECEMBER 1STWHAT??? This is the first day of Summer??? You are f***ing kidding!!!

Part four

Full open water high speed testing was undertaken in the Platypus waterholeon Neurum Ck at Neurum Creek Bush Retreat, where Pam Ottway christenedthe vessel the “Ottway”. Bruce and Pam and were very impressed with theboat named after them. When I first launched the “Ottway”, I checked allradio functions, everything worked as it should, but on the first high speedrun the rudder link came loose and would only do wide turns to port. I couldnot steer the boat back to the bank. While Bruce went to fetch the rescueboat I discovered that by using the water pump and squirting water out ofthe forward gun, I could steer the boat back to the bank. It was noticed thatat high speed the boat did not want to turn very sharp, but at low speed itturned tightly. I was not sure why, the hull is long and narrow, has a widebow and tapers towards the stern and leans into the corners. The prop seemsto cavitie on high speed turns. I asked the more experienced members ofthe Triple S Model Boat Club why this was happening. I was told that the fullsize hull had 2 or 3 motors, props and rudders and was designed primarilyfor high speed straight running not high speed tight turns. The model hasonly one motor, prop and rudder and this is why it won’t turn at high speed.

I spent $250 in parts to rebuild the “Ottway” but this did not include thebalsa, glue, paint, etc that I already had or the 5 channel radio.

The “Ottway” will spend it’s active service under command of Captain Ronand will travel far and wide to be displayed and compete in many model boatshows here in QLD and NSW.

The “Ottway” is the 15th boat in the Penfold fleet.

HEARD THE NEWSHEARD THE NEWSHEARD THE NEWSHEARD THE NEWSHEARD THE NEWSPrestigious Marketing Award – The chairman of Subaru Australia Trevor Amery hasrecently received the 2005 Sir Charles McGrath Award. The Australian MarketingInstitute has been presenting this Award since 1976. Between 1993 and 1995 SubaruAustralia was struggling with low sales, it had many different models, the Japaneseyen was high and the Australian dollar was depreciating. By late 1995 Trevor and hisSubaru management team took the decision to rationalise the range by dropping thefront wheel drive models and sell only all wheel drive models. Also the nationalDealership network was reduced by 80 to 110. The Dealers were also told not todiscount the recommended retail price of the cars to help maintain their value. At thatstage annual sales were around 8000, combined with the newly set up locally backedfactory rally team, and selling only AWD models, sales started to increase. By the late1990’s sales were still increasing with the success of the new models, mainly theWRX, Outback, and Forester. Now total sales this year will be around the 36,000mark.

Same car new owner – Another car has done the Club ownership rounds. This timenew member Jan [Kanco] who joined with a tidy standard MY 92 Brumby fitted with acanopy. Jan was keen to set up the Brumby, but on the recent Bellthorpe trip he saidhe had spotted a lifted L series wagon for sale in a car yard in Capalaba. He showed usa photo on his phone and we said it was Barry Beard’s old L89 wagon that he had justtraded in on his new 06 Impreza wagon. We gave Jan, Barry’s phone number so hecould get more details. By the Double Island Point trip Jan had done the deal, he hadalso bought from Barry the 14 inch Peugeot rims and rear bar that he was keeping tosell separately.

Company cars – With the current trend to 4 cylinder cars, fleets are starting to see thebenefits. Septone Products our Club Presidents Greg Bryant employer have recentlybought with Greg’s recommendation two Liberty 2.5 litre wagons for their Reps. Nowwith 4 cylinder economy, the added safety of AWD, more Liberty’s are expected to jointhe Septone fleet in the near future.

Setting up and updating. With a good original RX Turbo as his road car, Club memberDave Gibson has recently bought and set up a 92 Liberty wagon, for off road work, witha lift kit, bigger tyres, and a snorkle. He has also recently found and bought anothergood original white L87 auto RX turbo for his farther to drive.
