Simon has previously met with the Clunes Community Group, established at a public meeting held earlier in the year, to look at community issues in the town. A key outcome of that public meeting was the limited accessibility to public transport. Simon has taken that information and developed two proposals, as follows:- 1. An off-peak bus that runs to Creswick and connects with the bus to Ballarat. It may be possible that this service would connect with a similar 'feeder service' from Daylesford to Creswick that is currently being developed as a proposal by a bus operator and thus provide a connection to Daylesford. Due to restrictions on the funding in the Front SEEAT Transport Connections Project this service would only run one or two days a week. However, if the service is well patronised we may be able to argue for it to run more often at the end of its trial period. The service would run mid morning and mid afternoon and would most likely be on a Wednesday and/or weekend depending on community feedback. 2. A peak service either to run all the way into Ballarat or to be made as an extension to the already existing bus service to Creswick. This service would not be funded through the Transport Connections project due to it needing to run Monday to Friday and the cost of the service being larger than the budget of the project. The service would be for the benefit of those people working full-time in Ballarat Monday to Friday. Feedback on both of these concepts is being sought to support proposals that most accurately reflect the needs to Clunes residents and are therefore services that will be patronised well. Community response to these proposals, together with consistent patronage, will be essential for their ongoing viability….. I urge all residents to consider these proposals and respond to either: Simon (5345-8399 [email protected] ) or me (5345-3337 [email protected] ) so that community views are reflected in both the trial and the final outcome. December 2008

President‟s Report November, 2008

The recent visits by the MG Car Club and the Monaro Car Club were great successes and I have had very positive feedback from the organisers regarding their reception in Clunes.

The Pyalong Neighbourhood House visited Clunes in a tour bus with about 40 people. They had lunch in the National Hotel and I gave them a brief talk on the history of Clunes as well as preparing a tour for them.

On Thursday, 20 November, 2008 we had a visit from the Probus Club of Shepparton. They were being catered for locally and a big “thank-you” must go to Jane Lesock and the team of volunteers who organised the meals and necessary setup. Following lunch, they were given a bus tour of the town. Apparently, the club reports on trips to other Probus Clubs around the state, so this may be the beginning of a number of visits.

I believe that these mid-week events are important as so much of the significant tourist activity is based around the weekends. We will continue to promote the town as a destination for mid-week visits with, hopefully, a benefit to local businesses.

The Clunes Show was again a great success and congratulations go to the organisers and the many volunteers.

At its meeting on 17 November, 2008, the CTDA had Simon Evans, the Transport Connections Coordinator from Hepburn and Moorabool Shires as guest speaker. Simon has previously met with the Clunes Community Group, established at a public meeting held earlier in the year, to look at community issues in the town. A key outcome of that public meeting was the limited accessibility to public transport.

Simon has taken that information and developed two proposals, as follows:-

I urge all residents to consider these proposals and respond to either: Simon (5345-8399 [email protected]) or me (5345-3337 [email protected]) so that community views are reflected in both the trial and the final outcome.

Firstly, let me thank all the people who have had

positive comments on the article from the last newsletter.

I hope publish an article in the newsletter each month to

keep you all informed.

As this will be my last article for the year I think it is a

timely reminder that XMAS is less than a month away,

and with that comes the XMAS parties, get togethers and

festivities. Unfortunately at this time of year we, the

police, inevitably have to attend fatal and serious injury

collisions on the roads and it is by no means a coincidence

that the majority are caused by the consumption of

Alcohol.

Operation RAID, (Remove All Impaired Drivers),

Australia’s biggest ever traffic operation has been

launched and will run from Nov 21 through to Dec 13.

You will see more traffic police in the area in the time

leading up to XMAS and the chances of being breath

tested will rise sharply, don’t be surprised to see a Booze

Bus in Clunes at some stage. I implore you, those

attending XMAS parties and the like, if you are going to

drink, plan for the evening, whether this means using

public transport or the use of a designated driver. What I

am trying to say is please don’t drink and drive, the

consequences can be disastrous. I am passionate about

Road Safety Issues, having been directly involved in this

area for more than 12 years.

If you are travelling long distances over the XMAS

holiday period, please make use of the various ‘Driver

Reviver’ stations that will be strategically placed on major

highways. The simple message is to have a break every

couple of hours.

On a much lighter note, on Friday the 5th of December,

I have organised for the Ballarat ‘Youth Bus’ to attend at

the Clunes Footy Grounds from 5pm through until 8pm.

The Bus is equipped with Play Stations and other

electronic gizmos, which can be used. We will also be

putting on a free BBQ. It should be lots of fun and I am

personally inviting ALL the kids of Clunes, both young

and old, to come along and check out the ‘Bus’ at the

Footy Ground on the Friday.

Wishing you and your families a Safe and Happy

XMAS, Thanks again, and as always I can be contacted on

5345 3211 or [email protected]

Shepparton Probus Club On Thursday 20th November 50 members of the Shepparton Probus Club visited Clunes. On arrival they were greeted by 3 of our own Probus Club Members Barbara, Marj & Jan. After having a look around Fraser Street, they enjoyed a delicious "Chicken & Salad" lunch catered for by C.T.D.A. Members. Thanks to IGA for cooking and quartering the chickens. To add to the ambience, they enjoyed the background music kindly provided by Wesley Student, John, who played the violin. Melbourne had Andre, we have our own talent here in Clunes. Most of the shops opened specially, to show off their wares and the visitors were greeted with friendly smiles and were rewarded for it. After lunch, Chris Fenner, kindly gave them a tour of the town, including the Town Hall & Bottle Museum. They all left with a great impression of Clunes and promised to return again. Thanks to the following volunteers who made this day possible --- Jos & Mary (donating salad ingredients), Graeme & June - (making the salads and preparing lunch packs), Rob & Rhonda, Ken & Margaret, Deborah, Janet, Laurie, Jane & Paul and Chris.

Clunes Show 2008

Everything came together on the 15th November for one the most successful shows to date. The hard working committees again proved why the Clunes Show is in its 148th year. The spring show has much to offer the family from the animal nursery, vintage displays, show boy and show girl, pet shows, ladies wood splitting and much more. Wandering around the grounds there was constant entertainment and interaction. Having the horses back kept the arena busy all day. A walk through the home craft pavilion revealed a record number of entries. The introduction of primary school handwriting generated 98 entries alone. Other entries included a display of over 230 cut flowers. Barb Adam received the much revered prize for Champion Rose. Another new section was "the life on the land" photography competition. Attracting 12 new exhibitors and being part of the total 245 entries in photography alone. Cooking was again keenly contested with Pat Cook retaining her title of the "Ginger Cake" queen. Jodie Seers taking the Outstanding Exhibit for her savoury flan. The Sunbeam rich fruit cake competition as won by Margaret Danaher and the junior by Finn Stephenson. Both go on to represent the Clunes Society at the Midland group level. Good luck.

The display of children's flowers showed great imagination from the kids. With Montana Harrison taking out Judges Choice for her character made from horticultural material.

The skill and patience of the needle work section made for a great display with Janine Flemming being awarded outstanding exhibit for her handmade patchwork. The well tended vegie-gardens of the local community attracted 43 entries. Lynn Foster won the Outstanding Exhibit for her Cauliflower.

The show highlights the keen interest in displaying the many skills held within our community. Entries are growing each year and so we look forward to introducing new sections to build on our foundation of participation and success. Thank you to all those who attended and participated and making our show "a great family day out".
