And, even though Chuy is fairly young, he now holds 10 years of experience in politics.

Jesus “Chuy” Gonzalez, Jr ’07 is a steadfast, focused and prepared individual dividing his time between Austin and Laredo. He is the chief of staff with Texas State Representative, Richard Peña Raymond.

Chuy’s interest in public service and most importantly, bettering his community came to him pretty early in life.

Family dinners were at the root of developing his interests listening to his grandfather and father discuss issues that affected their lives. The listening evolved into family

discourse where topics were prompted by the local newspaper.

Then came action. During high school, Chuy became involved with his church serving as a mentor and leader for Laredo’s youth.

During his volunteer work, Chuy met State Representative Richard Raymond and was recruited to work with him in Austin during a tough legislative year.

Performing at a level of professionalism expected of the biggest and best names in the political arena at the age of 22 weighed heavily.

Family Holiday Events TAMIU Tree Lighting – December 3 Enjoy hot chocolate, snacks, pictures with Santa, Christmas caroling from local schools and goody bags for children at the Texas A&M International University Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library’s Front Lawn.

The festivities are a free family event.

“The Lighting Ceremony is one of our many traditions on campus and serves to help the less fortunate through visitors’ donations that go to Cover Laredo, an initiative created by the TAMIU Student Government in 2005. It is a way for our students to serve the community,” explained Miguel Treviño, associate director, TAMIU Office of Student Activities.

Ceremony sponsors, TAMIU’s Campus Activities Board and the TAMIU Student Government, will accept donations for Cover Laredo 2008. The public is encouraged to donate jackets, sweaters, blankets, shoes and other winter items.

Las Posadas 2008 – December 5 TAMIU Ballet Folklorico’s Las Posadas features the music and dances of Mexico. The program spon-sored by Target, will take place on Friday, December 5, 2008, 7pm at the Center for the Fine and Per-forming Arts Recital Hall. Admission is free.

Holiday Shows at the Planetarium – Opens December 6

Two new LBV Planetarium shows highlighting the holiday season will kick-off Saturday December 6th. Holiday Music

Magic features a variety of festive classics from Mannheim Steamroller, Burl Ives and Brenda Lee. The soundtrack is

visually enhanced with three 3-D artistic animation and all-dome scenery in the audiovisual setting of the Planetarium’s

dome theatre.

Visitors will have the opportunity to take their picture with Saint Nick for $2.

General admission tickets are $5 and $4 for children and TAMIU students, faculty, staff and alumni. Season tickets are

also available starting at $35.

Show schedule for Saturday, Dec. 6, is: Season of Light at 5 and 7 p.m. and Holiday Music Magic at 6 and 8 p.m. The LBV Planetarium will be open Fridays and Saturdays through Dec. 20. For more information please visit the Lamar Bruni Vergara Planetarium’s home page.

Professor Invited to Ibsen International Conference Dr. Robert W. Haynes, a longtime English professor and president of the Faculty Senate was invited to attend the International Henrik Ibsen Conference as a guest of the Norwegian government. This year’s conference focused on artistic freedom from different perspectives, including censorship and constraints imposed by legislation as well as restrictions based on socio-political and cultural norms and values. Dr. Haynes, who has a doctorate in English from the University of Georgia, had recently published an article comparing two plays, one by the great Norwegian dramatist Henrik Ibsen and a 1995 play by a Texas writer, Horton Foote, who won an Academy Award. The conference began in Oslo and later moved to the small town of Skien, two hours away, where Henrik Ibsen spent his childhood. On the last day, conference guests visited the former Ibsen home, now a museum, in the farm country outside of Skien. The International Ibsen Conference was attended by many theater directors, playwrights and actors, along with filmmakers and scholars. He has taught at different universities throughout the U.S. since 1982. Haynes is a tireless author and critic of British literature. Moreover, he is constantly writing numerous book reviews and in the process of publishing a book, currently entitled, “Border Sonnets.”

Working hard and doing a thorough job is something his father instilled in him as a young boy by going out to work with his dad on weekends and holidays. Lessons about the importance of a job well done were also reinforced again at TAMIU. Not two days into class and he failed his first quiz. Admittedly, he says that he only quickly reviewed the material prior to the quiz. Chuy took this as an opportunity to learn about preparedness. The bigger lesson reaped: the benefits are only as deep as your efforts.

Hard work, ethics and preparation are central to his life. Moreover, he advises those interested in entering politics should know and understand issues. “One should research the people involved and the process and group dynamics are just as important. This arena is 24/7 and yesterday’s news is just that. Be aggressive and put your best foot forward,” he explains.

He is the executive vice president at Zapata National Bank. Richard Aguilar ’06 will be starting a new job in Dallas, TX. He’s completing his MIS Degree this December. Timothy Garza ’07 began his teaching career this fall. He is a music instructor at Borchers Elementary in Laredo, TX.
