Martin TekelaUCR President

I’d like to start this month’s article by thank-

ing everyone who voted online or in person at

the Ciao Bella restaurant on November 10th in

UCR’s annual General Elections. I would also like

to welcome Laurel Ward to the Board of Directors

and to thank all members of the executive com-

mittee and the Board of Directors for volunteering

their time to help run this club on behalf of the

Club’s approximately 2500 primary and associate

members.

Speaking of the executive committee, Graham Jar-

dine has served as the Club Treasurer for the past

four years and has indicated his desire to move

on to other challenges. We’re actively looking for

a replacement for Graham and I would appreciate

a call if you would like to be considered for this

position or if you could recommend someone that

I should call.

Looking ahead to 2010, I believe that PCA/UCR will

see more support and co-operation from Porsche

Cars Canada. It was a pleasure to welcome so

many of the management team and their guests

at the recent UCR Awards Gala held in Toronto on

November 28. Our guest speaker for the event was

Joe Lawrence, President and CEO of Porsche Can-

ada. Also attending were Jasmin Rawlinson, who

agreed to sponsor the PCA/UCR Enthusiast of the

Year Award, Jim Leckie and Laurence Yap, who

was last year’s guest speaker at the Banquet.

Porsche Cars Canada also sponsored the October

2009 social meet at Pfaff Porsche in Woodbridge.

UCR members were treated to an advance intro-

duction of the new Porsche Panamera. There were

two models on display, including a drop-dead gor-

geous Turbo S in a new exterior colour that I think

was called Yachting Blue, over a white leather in-

terior. There were also five or six representatives

from PCC in attendance, including Joe Lawrence.

Last month’s issue of Provinz contained an insert

from Porsche Cars Canada with information on

winter tires and winter driving accessories. My

1999 996 C2 was the first Porsche I had ever driv-

en in the winter and it was a total blast to drive. On

the strong recommendation of my Porsche service

advisor, I had purchased a set of Porsche factory

wheels and Pirelli snow tires. The proper choice of

wheels & tires made all the difference on my 996

C2. Winter driving the Porsche was unbelievably

fun. I fondly remember the time I was driving the

996 up north of Barrie during a moderately heavy

snow storm. I stopped to enquire if the driver of a

4 x4 that had skidded off the road needed any as-

sistance! You had to see the look of amazement on

the driver’s face as he glanced over to the Porsche

that I was driving in 8-10 cm deep snow. We still

drive Hazel’s 997 Carrera S Cabriolet in the winter,

equipped with Continental winter tires.

I must admit that I have still not ventured out in the

winter with my 2004 GT3, which hibernates in the

Collingwood area. If only I could get a good deal on

some GT3 winter wheels and snow tires and a big

discount on front splitters, I might consider driving

the GT3 in the winter. Gentle throttle input would

take on a whole new meaning!

Lastly I’d like to wish Season’s Greetings and

Happy Holidays to all PCA/Upper Canada Region

members and their families. Hope to see you at

an event soon.

Our Socials are a great opportunity to meet fellow Porsche lovers and

exchange stories about recent experiences, such as a D.E. weekend

or a road trip in our favourite automobile.

We try to invite guest speakers to share their expertise and to hold

a small presentation at all of our Meetings. The locations for the So-

cials have been moving around over the past year and have included

some great new venues. Hopefully, this will make it easier for some

members to come out and enjoy the comraderie of the Meetings, as

they may be more convenient for them to get to. Our diverse locations

have also helped in breaking up the monotony, while offering a more

varied dinner menu.

For specific details, the UCR web site will be updated with write-ups,

addresses and driving directions. So, come on out and enjoy the eve-

ning with your fellow club members!

Meetings start at 6:30 pm on the second Tuesday of every month.

ing new advertisers; a feat that has resulted in a total of

16 full-colour pages, now brought to you every month. Phil

has also taken on proofreading chores, while minding the

buck to help control costs.

Our graphics artist, Michael Duhamel of Doohamel Studios

has done a great job in providing us with a fresh new look

every month, plus, he has to put up with me telling him

after the fact what I do and what I don’t like. I don’t know

much about art but I know what I like…

Harmony Printing, our printer of record, jumps to the task

every month, as soon as they can get their hands on our

files. They know too well that ours is volunteer work and

often tends to be not just a little late in the game. Harmony

makes us look good by providing us with a high-quality job

in a most expedient and efficient manner.

Three more Provinz team members to be mentioned are

Mary Byczok, our Content Editor, who looks after getting all

of the contributions in every month; Jeff White, who looks

after our advertiser and sponsor relations, as our Advertis-

ing Chair, while also bringing new ones on board; and, not

least, Lynda Beard of Jeff White’s Aurora Financial office,

who is our advertising administrator, looking after all of our

advertising contracts and accounts. Thank You, Everyone!

All the best of the season to you and yours!

Welcome to the final issue of Provinz for the year

2009 and goodbye to another great year for

UCR! As the last few leaves sail in the winter

breeze, it is time to say thanks to all of those who have

made 2009 another memorable year celebrating our fa-

vourite automobile. There are many volunteers at work

for UCR, organizing events and running a very well oiled

machine. Please tell them how much you appreciate their

efforts whenever you get the chance.

Close to my heart, of course, is this newsletter and I want

to take this opportunity to thank all of our regular and our

occasional contributors. They are too many to list here but

you know who you are! We appreciate every contribution

of photographs and articles, as, I’m sure, the membership

does as well. Keep ’em coming – this is your newsletter!

Thanks also go to our advertisers. Some of them have

been with us for many years, some come and go and re-

turn again, yet others are new kids on the block this year.

Without our valued advertisers, this newsletter, as it looks

today, would not be possible. Please give our advertisers

the opportunity to serve you when you are shopping for

goods and services.

I have had a lot of great help this past year in putting

Provinz together every month. Our publisher and UCR Di-

rector, Phil Downe, has done an outstanding job in attract-

Four-Times Monte Carlo Winner Dominates European Championship Race

Walter Röhrl Wins Costa Brava RallyText and Photo courtesy of Porsche AG Press Archives

Walter Röhrl has won the race for the FIA European Rally Cham-

pionship for Historical Cars in the Spanish town of Lloret de Mar

last weekend. Teaming up with co-pilot Peter Göbel, German Rally

Champion in 2002, 2004, 2005, and 2006, the two-times World

Rally Champion drove a 1981 Porsche 911 RSR to victory. With

their re-built and perfectly prepared rally version of the 911, Röhrl/

Göbel immediately moved up to the top group in the race, together

with ex-Renault works driver Jean Ragnotti in an Alpine A110, His-

torical European Championship specialist Michael Stoschek, Valter

Jensen and Toto Riolo, all driving a Porsche 911, and three Group

4 Lancia Stratos. Under very difficult weather and track conditions,

Röhrl clearly demonstrated his unique driving skills as the four-

times Monte Carlo winner on the last two stages of the race, bring-

ing home an historical victory for Wolfgang Reile’s Classic Power

Team in the very special style of the truly outstanding driver who

also won the European Rally Championship in 1974.

Text and Photos, courtesy of Porsche AG Press Archives

Porsche has extended its demanding approval process for win-

ter tyres to include tyres for young and old classics. Offering

customers this unusual service, the German manufacturer of

sports cars enables drivers of older mod-

els to use the best available products on

their car. Porsche is therefore providing

valuable help and orientation particularly

in the process of choosing new winter

tyres with safe driving characteristics also

on snow and ice. A further point is that

this makes Porsche one of the few car

makers to offer such an elaborate tyre

approval process.

Well over 70 per cent of all Porsche sports

cars ever built still exist today and are still

driven actively in most cases – in both

summer and winter. Indeed, even classic

Porsche models more than 20 years old

still offer the kind of performance today

one would expect of a modern sports

car. But the tyres fitted when such old

and new classics were still in production

have no longer been available for years.

Tyre treads and rubber compounds have

changed in an ongoing process of devel-

opment, thus influencing the driving be-

haviour of such old Porsche models.

Conducting elaborate tests, Porsche’s engineers determine which

of the tyres available today harmonise best with the features of a

classic Porsche. The highlight in this testing and approving process

is an extensive test programme up north

in the Polar Circle.

Numerous Porsche models built in former

years, among them the 911, 928, 964,

993 and 996, and then all the way to the

first Boxsters, have been tested for this

purpose on countless laps at the Arc-

tic Driving Center in the Finnish town of

Rovaniemi.

The criteria to be fulfilled by the tyres

tested in order to receive approval by

Porsche are so strict that not all tyres met

the test requirements. The characteristics

and features typical of an older air-cooled

911, for example, form a challenge not

easy to overcome.

Further tests for dry and wet handling

on test routes free of snow round off the

test programme as such. Information on

which tyres are recommended for which

Porsche model is presented on Porsche’s

website (www.Porsche.com) and is also

available at all Porsche Centers.

To test his new idea he fitted his VW39 Convertible with a compressor

engine. But the political leaders soon imposed a ban on using test

engines from Volkswagen, since each and every engine was required

for armament purposes. So instead father and son Porsche developed

their own 1.5-litre sports car based on the underlying concept of the

Auto Union racing car. Code-named Type 114, this new sports car was

to have a mid-engine with two overhead camshafts and hemispherical

combustion chambers. The gearbox was positioned behind the rear

axle and three passengers were to sit at the front next to each other,

the driver with the steering wheel either in the middle or to the left. “I

was more committed to this project than my father and our top man-

agers, since I was convinced there would be a large market for such a

car after the war”, said Ferry Porsche later.

A racing car based on the Type 60 Volkswagen was developed along-

side the main project on behalf of the Volkswagen Plant, intended to

promote the “Kraft durch Freude Car” in a long-distance race from

Berlin to Rome. So under the internal code name Type 64 or, respec-

tively, Type 60K10, Porsche’s engineers developed and built three

racing coupés in spring 1939 for the “Non-Stop Speed Trial”, as it

was called, planned for September of the same year. Since a long

stretch of this 1,500-kilometre race was to be on the new German

autobahn, Porsche and his engineers gave particular attention to the

car’s streamlining. With its aerodynamic aluminium body, fully covered

1938: Porsche in ZuffenhausenTo put an end to the provisional status of production processes in

the garage of the Porsche Mansion and to bring together the Test-

ing and Construction Departments, Ferdinand Porsche had a new

plant built in the Zuffenhausen district of Stuttgart in 1938. Ferry

Porsche had already purchased the real estate for the new plant in

May 1937 in Spitalwaldstrasse 2, unknowingly choosing the location

where Porsche’s Main Plant remains to this very day.

The so-called zero production series of what was later to become

the VW Beetle was built in Zuffenhausen in June 1938, with Ferry

Porsche taking on increasing responsibility for the car’s develop-

ment. “What I liked most was driving the VW on its bare chassis, with

the seat bolted in position but with no body on the car – so that you

saw the wheels turning and felt the wind rushing by. That was when

I developed my preference for clearly defined corners and wings on

the car, which is why Type 60 had four real wings on each corner.”

Developing the Volkswagen, Ferdinand and Ferry Porsche had by no

means given up their favourite projects, the construction and devel-

opment of racing and sports cars. On the contrary – in the late ‘30s

they had the idea for the first time to start production of their own car,

Ferry Porsche already considering the option to build a small sports

car based on the Volkswagen back in 1938.

wheel arches and a modified flat-four VW engine initially developing

33 bhp, the Berlin-Rome Car reached a top speed of 145 km/h or

90 mph. When the war prevented the race from actually taking place,

Porsche and his engineers used the Type 64 already completed for the

road as a fast grand touring sports car averaging a speed of 130 km/h

or 80 mph on their journeys from Stuttgart to Berlin. Today Type 64

with its beautiful styling is acknowledged as the ancestor of all Porsche

sports cars built since 1948.

Each of these projects raised Ferry Porsche up a bit further, out of the

shadow of his father Ferdinand. And although he was full of admira-

tion of his father’s skills, “we Porsches by no means always agreed on

technical matters”, he stated later. “When I expressed a different opin-

ion from him in the presence of others, he was really angry. I think he

was afraid of losing his face. But whenever we had such a disagree-

ment while we were alone, just the two of us, maybe on a long trip in

the car, he was far more open to my opinion and listened patiently to

what I had to say. Dad was a very authoritarian man.”

1944: Porsche in GmündAfter the outbreak of World War II Porsche’s engineers spent most

of their time developing military vehicles. Apart from the Type 81 VW

“Kastenwagen”, a kind of rudimentary jeep, the Company established

as Porsche KG in late 1937 also developed the Type 62 “KdF-Gelän-

de-Fahrzeug”, an offroad vehicle for military use, the Type 82 “VW

Kübelwagen”, again a jeep primarily for military purposes, as well

as the Type 87 all-wheel-drive model and the Type 166 “VW-

Schwimmwagen”, a dual-purpose amphibian vehicle. In late

1939 the Porsche Engineering Office was given the order by the

German Armament Bureau to develop a medium-weight fighting

tank, the construction of which was nevertheless stopped ahead

of time since there was a greater need for heavy tanks.

As of 1943 life became increasingly difficult for the employees

at Porsche on account of air raids in Stuttgart. Urged by the

Supreme Armament Command of the German Wehrmacht,

Porsche KG ultimately had to move its engineering office from

Stuttgart to the town of Gmünd in the Austrian province of Carin-

thia in autumn 1944. Makeshift workshops were constructed on

the premises of W. Meineke Holzgroßindustrie Berlin-Gmünd,

while the materials depot was housed on the premises of a flying

school in nearby Zell am See. Split up into a large number of

workshops and offices, the new Porsche Plant was soon ironi-

cally nicknamed “Vereinigte Hüttenwerke” or “Associated Steel

Works” by the employees.

After the war the plant facilities of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche KG in

Zuffenhausen were first used by the French military. In August

1945 an American unit took over the plant now serving as a re-

pair workshop for trucks. In the meantime the Porsche Plant in

Gmünd had received a provisional licence to start work again,

Porsche’s workforce of some 140 employees being allowed to

“design and construct motorised tractors, gas generators and

small sports car with a Fiat engine. So I said to myself: why shouldn’t we

do the same thing with VW parts? After all, that is already what we did

before the war with the Berlin-Rome car.”

Looking back today, the business risk involved in an enterprise of this

kind was almost mind-boggling: The whole of Europe was struggling

after a terrible war and demand in the market was primarily for practical

and inexpensive cars. And precisely in this situation Ferry Porsche de-

cided to fulfil his dream of building his own sports car – only to find that

other aficionados of the automobile shared precisely the same dream.

In spring 1947 Ferry Porsche first expressed his idea to build a sports

car using Volkswagen components which, initially code-named the “VW-

Sports”, received the construction number 356. The vision of Porsche’s

Junior Director was to “build the kind of sports car I liked myself”. Ferry

Porsche’s engineers, at any rate, were fascinated by the idea of building

such a sports car, completing a road-going chassis in February 1948

destined to take up a roadster body made of aluminium. The flat-four

power unit, together with the gearbox, suspension, springs and steer-

ing, all came from Volkswagen. Weighing just 585 kg or 1,290 lb, this

35-bhp mid-engined roadster had a top speed of 135 km/h or 84 mph.

On 8 June 1948 this very first Porsche mid-engine sports car proudly

bearing the chassis number 356-001 received official homologation

from the authorities through an individual permit granted by the State

Government of Carinthia.

Production of the first “regular” Type 356/2 coupés and cabriolets start-

ed in Gmünd in the second half of 1948 – and like Porsche 356 No 1,

Type 356/2 also featured an aluminium body designed and constructed

by Erwin Komenda, the Director of Body Development at Porsche. But

unlike the No 1 mid-engine prototype, the horizontally-opposed power

unit in Type 356/2 was fitted at the back in order to provide luggage

space behind the front seats. When an investor in Zurich, Rupprecht von

Senger, advanced money for a small production series and received a

contract as the importer for Switzerland in return, Porsche once again

had access to the VW parts and body panels the company needed so

urgently.

The contract Ferry Porsche concluded with the Managing Director of

Volkswagenwerk on 17 September 1948 on the supply of VW parts and

the use of VW’s distribution network clearly shows that Ferry Porsche

was not only an outstanding engineer, but also a far-sighted business-

man and entrepreneur: Ferry Porsche and Nordhoff agreed that VW was

to pay a licence fee to Porsche for every Beetle built, since, after all,

the car had been developed by Porsche before the war. The second

important decision was the foundation of Porsche-Salzburg Ges.m.b.H.

as a central office for the management of Volkswagen imports, sales and

customer service in Austria. These agreements with Volkswagenwerk,

already a major manufacturer at the time, gave Porsche the security

the young company needed, particularly in financial terms. And it set the

foundation for the ongoing development of Porsche KG as a manufac-

turer of sports cars.

other civilian equipment” and to repair “motor vehicles and agricul-

tural machinery”.

In this difficult situation Ferdinand Porsche accepted the invitation by

a French commission to go to Baden-Baden in mid-November 1945

in order to discuss the possible continuation of the Volkswagen Proj-

ect in France. But before the contract was signed at another meeting

a month later, he was arrested together with his son Ferry and his

son-in-law Anton Piëch by the French Secret Service in Baden-Baden.

And while Ferry Porsche was released from prison in March 1946,

Ferdinand Porsche had to remain in custody despite a severe illness

and was subsequently taken to Paris and Dijon.

“Things became tough for me after the war, since now I had to take

the initiative all by myself”, said Ferry Porsche. So he started on new

projects catering for the new demands and requirements he was now

facing: The machines in Gmünd were used to build accessories for

tractors, wheelbarrows or cable winches. But the objective, of course,

was to build cars once again. So with his business friends Karl Abarth

and Rudolf Hruska acting as the intermediaries, Ferry Porsche signed

a contract with Piero Dusio, an industrialist from Torino, on 15 Decem-

ber 1946 for a wide range of development assignments on behalf

of Dusio’s company Cisitalia. Apart from a small tractor and a water

turbine, Porsche KG in Gmünd was also entrusted with the construc-

tion of the Type 360 Grand Prix Racing Car as well as the Type 370

two-seater mid-engined sports car.

“I would have done everything the same way, down to the last bolt”The engineers at Porsche KG in Gmünd were soon working all-out on

the Type 360 Grand Prix Racing Car – and indeed, this first car devel-

oped completely under the guidance and leadership of Ferry Porsche

was far ahead of its time. Porsche’s engineers opted for a 1.5-litre

supercharged twelve-cylinder power unit, with engine power transmit-

ted to the wheels through on-demand four-wheel drive. And although

the assignment was not continued beyond the test stage due to a lack

of funds on the part of the Italian principal, the project was neverthe-

less of fundamental significance to Porsche. Receiving an appropriate

fee for the work done, Ferry Porsche was able to bail his father out of

prison by paying a million French francs to the authorities, Ferdinand

Porsche being released on 1 August 1947. The investigations that had

started in France against Professor Porsche on account of alleged war

offences never resulted in any formal charges and were soon dropped

once and for all. And when, a bit later, Ferdinand Porsche saw the

drawings of Type 360, he gave his son the highest grade possible:

“I would have done everything the same way, down to the last bolt.”

1948: Porsche’s first Sports Car

“I can readily admit that the initiative came through Cisitalia”, said

Ferry Porsche on the occasion of his 75th birthday when describing

the early days of the Porsche 356. “Back then Cisitalia was building a

crashed out of the race in the 71st lap, they adjusted their race tactic to

the new situation. Joerg Bergmeister commented: “From that moment

on we went for victory.”

Putting in a spirited drive, they turned this plan into deeds. After

the retirement of the Risi-Ferrari, the Corvette with Jan Magnus-

sen in the cockpit became their greatest rival. And the final lap

turned into the most dramatic and gripping. In the dusk, Joerg

Bergmeister and his pursuer delivered a thrilling wheel-to-wheel

duel. In an attempt to snatch the lead shortly before the flag, Jan

Magnussen drove over the white line on the finish straight with all

four wheels and almost put the leading Porsche into a spin in the

final corner. Joerg Bergmeister said: “It took everything to stay on

the track. I’m sorry that Magnussen ended up flying off the track.”

At the wheel of Farnbacher Loles Racing’s 911 GT3 RSR, Porsche works

driver Wolf Henzler (Germany) brought home third place with his com-

patriot Pierre Ehret after a breathtaking chase through the field. “That

was the toughest race of my career,” he said. “To secure third in the

championship I had to finish third in the race. Two laps before the flag I

finally managed the decisive manouevre. That was a great conclusion to

a season of mixed fortunes.”

There were smiles as well throughout the Cytosport team: Klaus Graf

(Germany) and Greg Pickett (USA) continued the successful comeback

of the Porsche RS Spyder in the American Le Mans Series with second

position in the LMP2 class. “What a race. We made several mistakes

but still managed to cross the finish line in second. That is thanks to the

unbelievable reliability and stability of the RS Spyder,” said Klaus Graf.

“We contested four races and climbed the podium four times – that’s

not bad for a start.”

Stuttgart.

Porsche celebrated the 100th win in the American Le Mans Se-

ries at Laguna Seca: With the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR fielded by

Flying Lizard Motorsports, Porsche

works drivers Joerg Bergmeister (Germa-

ny) and Patrick Long (USA) won the highly

dramatic season final in California and

secured the GT2 class championship.

Porsche also claimed the manufacturers

title, and team championship honours

went to Flying Lizard Motorsports.

“That was a great conclusion to a fan-

tastic season. I did everything for this

win,” said Joerg Bergmeister, who is

now the second most successful driver

in the American Le Mans Series with

four championship titles. Patrick Long

was also delighted with his second title:

“We were the most consistent and our

team made the least mistakes. We ex-

perienced a couple of difficult races but

remained cool. That was the key to our success.”

With the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR run by Flying Lizard Motorsports, they

were the outstanding drivers of this season. The pair won five races

in a row and, with this excellent performance, built up a comfortable

points’ advantage over their strong rivals from Ferrari and BMW. With

victory number six they have now secured the title. For Joerg Berg-

meister, this is already his fourth championship title in the American Le

Mans Series after 2005, 2006 and 2008, and the second for Patrick

Long after 2005. Porsche holds nine GT titles in the race series featur-

ing the world’s fastest sports cars.

In the early stages of the four hour race on the 3.601 kilometre circuit

in the dunes of Monterey, the Porsche works pilots kept out of any

trouble. Tenth place would have been enough to win the title – for

this reason they were unwilling to take any unnecessary risks. When

the leading Ferrari - the only competitor that was a threat to them -

In addition to the three championship titles, Porsche also celebrated

winning the “Michelin Green X Challenge” environmental classification.

The #44 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR of Flying Lizard Motorsports won the

competition, run for

the first time this sea-

son, for the vehicle

with the best overall

efficiency in the ratio

of lap times and fuel

consumption. In the

“Michelin Green X

Challenge” Porsche

secured individual

wins in Long Beach,

Salt Lake City, Lime

Rock, Road Atlanta and Laguna Seca. At the last two races, the award-

winning GT3 RSR trialed E85 fuel (85 percent bio-ethanol). “To win the

environmental award alongside all titles in the GT2 class makes me very

proud,” said Hartmut Kristen, head of motorsport at Porsche. “It is the

right signal to give the efficiency of a vehicle great importance in mo-

torsport.”

Husband and wife Martin and Melanie Snow (USA) won the title in the

ALMS Challenge with the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.

For Porsche’s head of motorsport, Hartmut Kristen, Joerg Bergmeister

and Patrick Long’s victory “was the fitting end to an extremely excit-

ing race and rounds off the success in this fiercely-contested series

perfectly. The manufacturers’ title for Porsche, the team championship

for Flying Lizard Motorsports and the drivers’ title for Joerg and Patrick

– it doesn’t get better than that. This season has again underlined that

the world’s best sports cars come from Stuttgart.” His satisfaction over

the success, however, was not without some frustration. “What really

annoyed me was that the second-placed Corvette made three seri-

ous fouls in this race, two of which went unpunished. The IMSA must

do something about this urgently. Fairness must again stand in the

foreground in the future.”

The weatherman forecasted rain for Saturday. Two cars had

withdrawn due to impending rain, leaving us with 8 cars

for our first PCA-UCR rally hosted by the Racquet Fitness

Academy (RFA).

By Saturday morning there was no rain but the clouds loomed over-

head. We had just finished the checkpoints briefing when the first

drivers to arrive were Mr. and Mrs. Ronan McGrath with their beauti-

ful GT3 RS and their cheerful presence. Then 40 minutes later there

were 15 cars entered. After coffee and donuts, there was a drivers

briefing.

By 10:30 all the cars were lined up at the starting point and off they

went at one minute apart, ready to navigate the rural roads decked

with fall colours.

All cars did quite well on the first leg of the route. Car # 3 with Munir

and Amin had a clean sheet not losing any minutes. At Checkpoint 2,

car # 6 with the Hodgson father and son team had a clean run but

unfortunately car #1, belonging to Gary and Sheryl Beutler lost 40

minutes with a wrong turn; otherwise they were clearly contenders

for the winners circle. At checkpoint number 3, cars # 5 (Parets),

#7 (McGraths), and #13 (Danny Kroll and Abby) were all clean on

this leg with roads that wound through the spectacular Forks of the

Credit. At Checkpoint 4, after seeing the Cheltenham Badlands and

the beautiful Terra Cotta area, cars #2 (Belos), #8 (Ian Cairns car),

#10 (Greg and Weyman), and # 1 (Beutlers), came out clean. At the

last checkpoint, car #7, the winning team so far, unfortunately lost 23

points. Most cars lost points on this last leg, which included a quick

run on the 401. The final standings were:

1st place......car #3 (Munir Daramshi and Amin)

2nd place.....car #2 (Robert and Brenda Belo)

3rd place.....car #6 (Hodgson)

Beautiful trophies were awarded to the winners after the meal.

It was a great family event, as entrants consisted of husband and

wife, father and son, and brother teams. As for me it was nice to

have my 2 daughters, my brother, son and grandson part-take as

Checkpoint volunteers. Not to be outdone my wife Gulzar, jumped in

as navigator for car #15 (Richard Roell) at the last minute. What a

surprise for my family to see their mother in the race. Thanks to all

the participants and the volunteers. It was a pleasure to meet each

and everyone of the drivers and navigators. Special thanks to Danny

Kroll for handling the e-mail part of the event.

1:00 pm, where we had reservations, and were able to sit in small

groups and enjoy a delicious lunch with many wonderful choices

on the menu. We continued our journey back to Bracebridge along

Hwy 141, arriving mid afternoon where some folks went sightsee-

ing in our friendly little town, and some folks came back to our

home for an afternoon visit and a “cold” one. We ended our run at

another famous Sushi restaurant, Wabora, where we had a table

reserved for 14 people! A perfect ending to a perfect day. What

could be better than an amazing group of Porsche lovers on a

spectacular sunny fall day, navigating the beauty of the Muskokas,

driving the cars they love, enjoying the experience and each oth-

ers company... let me guess, another Fall Fun Run hosted by Anne

and myself. It would be our pleasure.

Our Fall Fun Run could not have been more perfect! We

started out at 10:00 am from “of course” Tim Hortons just

off Highway 11 in Bracebridge. It was a beautiful sunny

fall day, and 12 gorgeous Porsches set out to navigate the wind-

ing vista of fall coulors at their peak. We were on the road for a

total of three hours, the first leg heading East along Hwy 118

towards Haliburton. The line of Porches was a sight to behold as

we travelled along enjoying the leaves and the spectacular Mus-

koka Lakes, heading North along Hwy 35 to Dorset, a sleepy little

town boasting the most famous little general store in Ontario. We

shopped to our hearts delight for half an hour at Robinson’s gen-

eral store, then headed West towards Huntsville, the home of the

G20 next June. The winding roads and spectacular fall colours

set against the numerous Muskoka lakes enhanced the Porsche

experience as only perfection can. We headed to Rosseau for

lunch arriving at a wonderful little restaurant, Crossroads, at

come in 2010. As we put our beautiful cars to sleep for the winter, we know there is a quiet

whisper from those amazing high performance engines that becon to us “a gentle awaking”

next spring. I invite you all to continue to host and/or participate in our Fun Run Plans for

2010, and be gratified that so many Porsche lovers appreciate your heartfelt efforts. Have

a safe and fabulous winter, enjoy the beauty of the season with your families, and stay con-

nected with your friends. Until next year, yours in the “Love

UCR TECH SER IES

The Technicalities of Getting from

Street to Track… Part 1Story and Photos by Phil Downe,

UCR Director and Publisher of Provinz

The rear end locked up in the braking zone for 5B. I had found

second gear, didn’t even know what “blip” meant at the time,

and popped the clutch with way too little on the tach for sec-

ond. The rear end locked up and swung wide towards the grass and

wall. Somewhat stunned and doing little to extricate myself from this

partially rotating slide, the rear tires dragged over the outside turtles,

gouging big chunks of rubber out of the run-flats that came standard

on the BMW 645.

The entire session had been a rude awakening. I was literally all

over the place trying to follow instructions, I was anxious and I had

too much going through my head. I couldn’t filter out the crap and

just focus. I was trying to decipher what the instructor had just said

about the last corner, while trying to remember what he said on the

previous lap about the next corner, only to find out that wasn’t the

right corner at all. The last instructor of the day made the comment,

“I can’t sign you off because this much power could get you into

trouble that your skill level won’t get you out of.”

It was Mosport International Raceway in early 2006 and I had signed

up for an independent track day for the very first time. Fellow PCA’er,

Ronan McGrath had invited me on a 10-day trip to Germany to pick

up his new ‘06 M6 on the European Delivery plan. (Yes! He has

a GT3-RS too but that’s another story altogether.) The itinerary in-

cluded six days at the famed Nürburgring Nordschleife and I wanted

a little track experience beforehand.

My obvious lack of control at Mosport, the driving instructor’s com-

ment and seeing the expensive and often deadly results of driver er-

ror at the Nürburgring (three deaths that week) taught me a lesson.

Too much power and too little skill is not a good combination.

Back from Germany I was telling “Ringer” stories at the gym and

Michael Marcello asked me when I was going to get a Porsche and

join him and his friends at UCR’s DE events. With three cars in the

garage, I explained I could hardly afford a 911. The conversation

swung from the 911’s to the virtues of the 944 as a track car and

he suggested I call Markus Blaszak, UCR’s Chief Registrar and 944

track-car specialist.

Markus and I hit it off well from the start and after working out a

reasonable budget he coached me through a couple of used vehicle

checkouts, looking for the right conversion project. A few weeks later

Page 33: December 2009  · Year Award, Jim Leckie and Laurence Yap, who was last year’s guest speaker at the Banquet. Porsche Cars Canada also sponsored the October 2009 social meet at Pfaff

T h e J o u r n a l o f U p p e r C a n a d a R e g i o n 33

with a half-dozen test runs completed, Markus calls to say that Stan

Peck, a fellow club member, just posted his ’86 Guard’s Red 944 on

the UCR website. It’s in my area and I should go immediately and

check it out. Asking price was $4,500 – the interior was a little rough

and the paint was in bad shape but the maintenance file was impec-

cable. It had a new clutch, a recent ECU replacement and less than

10K on a rebuilt steering rack among the more recent maintenance

items. Markus liked what he heard because we were building a track

car, so aesthetics were quite low on our list of priorities. His exact

words were, “If it turns over and drives, buy it!”

So I did! I drove it around for a few days then headed out to Kingston

to meet with Markus. We decided on a street-legal car that I could

drive to and from the track. His conversion plan was pretty straight-

forward. We keep costs in check and only build to performance levels

that I could exploit. Sounded like a reasonable approach to me.

First step was gutting the car of all unnecessary weight. Fac-

tory seats front and rear, gone! Spare tire, tools, all carpeting and

under-padding, gone! Typically, you would cut everything out with

an exacto-knife but, in this case, Scott Wilken’s, our DE Tech Line

Chief wanted the interior intact for a car he was rebuilding, so it took

a little longer to remove it. Stereo and speakers, gone! We left the

door panels, headliner and center console in, but everything else

was removed.

The factory seat belts would be fine for a rookie and they fit neatly

around the new 17” Kirkey aluminum race seats. This isn’t an ab-

solute necessity for most at this point but, with my 6’-4” frame, I

couldn’t fit in the factory seats with the mandatory helmet for DE,

so I made the move to race seats early and capitalized on the huge

weight benefit. Then another must, the installation of the 2.5lb. fire-

extinguisher within easy reach and, oh what the hell, the removable

Tekniq steering wheel looked pretty cool and added a nice touch to

the interior.

Now we turned our attention to the power. Under the hood we did the

belts and rollers service, which was due anyway and threw in a new

water pump, which you’d be foolish not to do while you were in there,

and then topped it off with a custom programmed DME performance

chip. The power steering feed line was also upgraded along with new

front engine seals and the like.

The suspension was next. Koni sport shocks in the rear and sport

strut inserts up front. We added a 18mm rear sway bar with spheri-

cal bearing drop links. I asked about springs and tires, “Not so fast!”

he cautioned, “Let’s run on these Bridgestone street-tires and factory

springs so you get lots of car feedback, which you’ll need to learn,

then we’ll talk about R-compounds and suspension.”

OK sounds good so what’s next? “Let’s see, we made in a lot lighter

and more powerful, Oh! I got it! Stopping? – Yes!”. So we went with

cross-drilled brake rotors and ceramic pads and Voila! - an excep-

tional beginner DE Track car with quite a few extras and I’m still

running South of $12,000, all-in.

I’ve got the whole track car for what it would cost to repair a single

corner of a 911 if I were to lose it and hit the wall with any kind of

speed at all.

Next month - Well, I’ll tell you about it next month, but it was actu-

ally the following DE season and we were gearing up for a serious

upgrade.

Cheers,

Phil Downe

From Your Nose To Your Toes…

Okay, this is a joke: Why do people like leather pants? Be-

cause they smell like a new car!

So, on that note… imagine yourself driving in your Porsche,

wearing Porsche design shoes, while spritzing on your new

Porsche fragrance. Yes, this really could be you.

Porsche Design recently released its newest fragrance along with

sleek, modern footwear that can be donned for a variety of out-

ings. Now, whether you’re heading to the office or heading out

after five, you can be sure that your clod-hopper driving shoes

will be a thing of the past and that you’ll smell super fresh to

boot - no pun intended - really!

Porsche Design released its signature fragrance line – called

“The Essence” – about a year and a half ago, and has now fol-

lowed up with a new take, calling it “The Essence Intense”. Not

quite bottling that “new car smell”, Porsche Design says Intense

packs notes of myrtle, juniper and mandarin into a sleek bottle

of frosted black glass and satin black brushed aluminum that

seems to echo the design lines of the new Panamera.

Of more interest to the enthusiast, however, might be Porsche

Design’s latest line of driving shoes that, from a design and

brand perspective could be considered a big step up, so to

speak, from the sneaks designed for Adidas. It all started when

Porsche Design got together with Adidas on a big project design-

ing gear for driving, running, golf and tennis. They presented

clothing, sneakers, accessories and also equipment. As is the

case with all Porsche Design products, the quality level is really

high and the design is very sleek. Porsche Design is actually

not a subsidiary of the car maker, at least not anymore. But the

company shares some important attributes such as design com-

petence, quality and the German heritage.

Getting back to the latest collection of Porsche footwear from

Porsche Design Studio, it is formal enough to wear to the office,

and is designed for heel-and-toe work: The right sole is grooved

for quick transition from gas to brake, while the left sole is de-

signed to grip the clutch pedal.

The sole concept developed by Porsche Design-Studio in Zell

am See (Austria) sets a new benchmark. Inspired by double-

clutching when driving a car, where the left foot works indepen-

dently of the right, the soles were specially designed for these

demands. The Porsche Design shoes take this process into ac-

count, with the result that all models have non-slip TPU soles

with two different profiles: the outside of the right sole has a row >

Page 35: December 2009  · Year Award, Jim Leckie and Laurence Yap, who was last year’s guest speaker at the Banquet. Porsche Cars Canada also sponsored the October 2009 social meet at Pfaff

T h e J o u r n a l o f U p p e r C a n a d a R e g i o n 35

of grooves along its length to ensure a firm grip and quick change

from accelerator pedal to brake; the left sole, however, only has

a non-slip structure, to give the best possible grip to the clutch

foot when changing gear.

Another unique feature is the open ankle spring, which connects

the heel to the front of the shoe in classic designs. It provides the

foot with stable grip when walking and prevents the heel from

tipping, also designed into the shoe line is an innovative ele-

ment that provides the foot with lateral stability with every step,

while simultaneously supporting the natural rolling movement.

Do these people ever sleep?

Not to be left out, Porsche GT3 RS fans may be interested in

trying to get a pair of the limited edition Nike Air Max Light GT3

RS shoes—an interesting custom project initiated by Purchaze

from Germany—they created Nike Air Max Lights with the design

based on the Porsche GT3 RS. Colors of the shoe will match the

only available colors of the car: silver, black, green, and orange.

A Porsche logo is stitched into the tongue.

The shoes were made as a gift to staff of the Porsche Store in

Groningen, The Netherlands. As part of a promotion, Purchaze

staffers were driving around in a Porsche Cayman S. The Porsche

staff supporting the promotion were presented with pairs of the

shoes as they would be wearing these kicks while on the job as

maintenance crew of the racing team. All of the Porsche mem-

bers were very thrilled about their GT3 RS shoes because they

are a feat in fabulous footwear and are even rarer than the ex-

clusive cars they make.

Well, time to take it out of gear and put the brakes on for this

month, as always, if you have ideas, comments, questions, life-

style topics – or recipes! – to share, please email me.

Ciao

Dave Osborne Track Chair

Wow! It’s December already.

The geese have left for the

winter, the stores are filled

with people sharing their colds and flu

with each other and we’re all faced with

the same dilemma. Which of the many

deserving charities should you sup-

port. I personally avoid the corporate

charities. You

know, the ones

where you give

a donut chain

or a media out-

let your hard

earned cash

and they dis-

tribute it in their

name. They also

claim the charit-

able tax deduc-

tion and protect

more of their profits. Nothing says giv-

ing like a corporate charity… lol.

I used to take the lazy way out and just

give to United Way. They, in turn, use

blocks of funds to distribute to other

programs. The problem with that kind

of giving is the infrastructure that your

money supports. By the time you pay

for United Way’s offices, campaigns

and expenses and then support the

facilities and expenses of the individual

programs, there isn’t a lot left for those

who really need it. In some cases as

little as 15% gets to the end user. Then a few years ago I was

watching a speech by former President Bill Clinton. He named a

worldwide program by the name of Kiva and described the most

amazing idea I had ever heard of.

One of the difficulties presented to the economically challenged

is finding the funding to improve their own lives. If you only

need $500 to buy a cow to sell milk, cheese and finally meat,

you can’t afford to pay

a $250 loan fee and

interest. So the very

people who are willing

to make an effort are

crushed by the world

banking system. They

are forced to remain

in poverty despite their

desire to improve their

lives. Micro Loans are the answer. I threw in a couple of hundred

dollars and I add $100 each year. I loan this money, only $25 at

a time, over many projects, where I’m joined by other Kiva lend-

ers. When the payments are made back into my Kiva account, I

re-lend the funds to the next group that I choose. >

John AdamUCR Historian

We have re-elected President, Martin Tekela.

He is our 29th and he is directing a club

that has distinguished itself many times.

We have been recognized as PCA Region of the year

twice; our membership growth has been outstanding

and trophied four times; our membership co-chairs

Mark and Angie Herring were recognized for their

singular effort when they received the Zone Repre-

sentatives Award in 1992. Our newsletter has tro-

phied several times. Our web site is the finest in PCA.

Our members have been recognized internationally,

for example Botho von Bose as PCA Enthusiast of

the Year.

We need to thank those who first had the idea

to form a club. Geoff McCord was their leader. In

1976, perhaps it was just a band of enthusiasts

who needed to learn how to fix their Porsches. Hans

Pfaff was a proud supporter from the very start and

the H.J. Pfaff dealership continues its support to

this day. John Timbrell’s 1976 911 Targa was a

consistent Concours winner – now driven by Ken

Jensen. The Mosport Porsche Park came on the

scene in 1976. Mosport is still an important part of

our Porsche Club activities.

We started with 25 members. We had 190 at our

10th anniversary. Today, we are over 1,400 strong.

It took a while to really get rolling but baby, look at

us now.

In October, 2007, I was pleased to be able to meet

with the executive of Porsche Club Czech Republic

and deliver greetings and best wishes on behalf of

Porsche Club of America. In 2009, we met Porsche

Club representatives from Austria and Germany

while at Parade in Colorado. In June, 2010, we ex-

pect to see our friends again in Vienna at the Euro

Parade. In the Porsche Club, you can have friends

everywhere.

Sometimes we find a way to give something to the

community and sometimes we get it back in other

ways. At the end of the day, it makes you feel good

to belong to an organization like the Porsche Club.

When you open the bubbly later this month, make

a toast to the good times and happy memories

made possible by the Porsche Club of America, Up-

per Canada Region Inc. In 2010, we look forward

to continued good times with good friends in the

Porsche Club.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

The Minutes from the UCR Board meeting of November 3, 2009 were not finalized at press time. They will be published in the February 2010 issue of Provinz.

It started with me really being ‘on time’ for registration without

having to rush. Then we all received a very nice, long-sleeved

T-shirt, 100 % cotton, mine in ‘medium’, fitting perfectly, with

a nice fall colour design and the names of all participants on the

back of it. Really neat! (see photo).

Checking the Work Schedule, I happily noted, that I was ‘on’ for

Saturday morning! Wonderful !!! You know what I mean!!!

Then, to my delight, Mr. Bill Newby was assigned as my instruc-

tor. This nice, courageous man is the only instructor who ever

taught me a second time! But of course, it’s easier now since I

am driving my own quiet car.

Everyone else either could not take me or my rental car a second

time, sometimes not even the first time. Although, I must say in

my own defense, that the ones who stuck it out with me always

remarked in my logbook: “Great attitude”.

For all of the 2008 track season, I had this wonderfully noisy

944 race car, hot-red, with all kinds of decals, slicks, full cage,

detachable steering wheel, race seats and 5-point restraints, but

not much of a muffler. And, of course, not a car the ‘new kid on

the bloc’ was supposed to learn in. And it was true: I hardly could

hear my instructors, with or without communication device. It just

did not make much of a difference. Some of my very frustrated

instructors decided to work with hand-signals. You can find a

remark in my Driver’s Logbook that says: “Cannot hear, but re-

sponds well to hand signals”.

Then one day early this year, Hazel strongly suggested (like many

of my Porsche club friends before her) that I take my own ‘Ga-

rage Queen’ out of its comfortable setting and actually drive it

on the track. She said that whatever Porsche car one owns, one

needs to drive it, that’s what these cars like. And they are all

designed for racing. >

“What a Lucky and Happy Weekend

at MOSPORT for me!”

I finally listened and the rest is history: From then on I drove

“Flitzer” at all 2009 track events. I had already a roll bar and a fire

extinguisher installed, and prior to my first track day with this car, I

also got sway-bars as well, to keep the car from rolling around in

the corners, which was not much fun. Then off I went to the next

Mosport event, then Calabogie, Shannonville, Watkins Glen, and

now again to Mosport for the Fall Colours weekend. Except for the

very first one, I did all my 2009 track events with my Garage King

“Flitzer”. And it has been a wonderful blast!

And now, believe it or not, I can

proudly report that I was promoted

from ‘Yellow’ to ‘White’ this week-

end. Photo proof is attached as Bill

Newby fits me out with my new

‘White’ wristband. And I will try my

darnedest to make Bill ‘look good’.

Also on Sunday, I won at lunch time

a brand-new ceramic space heater,

something I dearly need in my home

office, where my feet always freeze up in the wintertime.

Sheryl Beutler (Gary’s wife) and passionate track photographer,

surprised me with an absolutely wonderfully unique ‘Track Mo-

mentos’ booklet. It captures in photos, print and other artistic en-

hancements my first 2 years on the track. I am attaching pictures

of the “Momentos” booklet. You can order from Sheryl an individu-

ally designed Booklet for your ‘Significant Other’ or yourself as a

wonderful Momento of your track career. Sheryl has thousands of

photos captured of all of us.

Also, Arthur, thank you very much for your generosity! Arthur helped

me out with Mobil 1 this weekend when I really needed it!! A further

Thank You goes to the nice, but anonymous person who brought

number “305” back to my parked car after it had flown off in cor-

ner 6 and Sheri’s little girl who helped me out with tape and skill

to stick it back on in the

pouring rain. And thank

you to everyone else who

was so supportive and

positive throughout the

weekend.

I want to take this op-

portunity also to espe-

cially thank all instruc-

tors for their willingness

and courage to get into

the cars of us students.

They put their lives into

our hands, feet, egos… We all appreciate very much your

patience, dedication and support and thank you for not get-

ting tired of again and again showing us the line, conveying

what ‘smooth’ really means, that it is important to really get

very close to that Apex and that it is REALLY important to do

it the same way over

and over again and

again. Well, it took

me 2 years to some-

what GET IT, and

know only too well

that I have still a long

way to go.

At the present time my job

missed a few Socials and

Fun Runs and will most

likely miss some more.

But I am totally dedicated

to our Club and cannot

imagine a nicer group of

people with a common

interest: THE ONE AND

ONLY P-CAR - a street or race car, each day of our lives,

whatever year, model, colour, k’s or engine size.

Brumm, brumm!!!

And both hands on the wheel:

Renate Weidner

is so demanding and I have
