Rugby legend offers some top tips

Captain Humzah Sarwar get’s Johnno’s signature.

On a dark Friday morning, 24 year 12s and 5 unfortunate teachers embarked on a 7 hour coach journey to Aberdovey, Wales. The first night was spent camping out in the woods: for both teams this was probably the worst night’s sleep we ever had. We managed to survive the night, only to be woken at 6am by the screaming voice of Amrit Sidhu. On

the second day each team had to build a raft made from barrels, ropes and logs and sail it along the estuary for at least one mile. On the last day we were faced with one of the biggest challenges of the weekend: The Challenge Wall! Each group had to get their whole team up and over the wall in the fastest time. Thanks to the strength of Jay Acharya and the height of Jags Sandhu, Scott team came out just in front of Nelson team who put up a good fight. The 5 teachers even got in to the action and managed to get themselves up and over the 10 ft wall and performed the famous bicycle celebration. The Royal Institution (RI) was founded in 1799 to introduce science to the public and has produced 14 Noble Prize winners and the discovery of 10 elements of the Periodic Table. Continuing this long tradition, a group of aspiring brain surgeons were treated to a presentation by TV scientist Alice Roberts on the

wonders of the human body and the role art has played in our understanding of it. Leonardo da Vinci was not only famous for the Mona Lisa ,but for some amazing drawings of human anatomy. The best part was the discussion afterwards in which several of our students asked Dr Roberts some crucial questions.

Get your wellies out!The AS Level geographers ventured out of Hounslow to experience the wild and rugged landscape of the Pembrokeshire Coast. The aim of the trip was to develop field work techniques that can be used in their studies, which meant lots of running about on beaches, hiking along coastal footpaths and enjoying the magnificent views from our accommodation in an old cliff top Fort! While we discovered the serious issues surrounding coastal management, cliff and footpath erosion, impacts of tourism and a need for rebranding, we also drank delicious hot chocolate, ate yummy welsh cakes and even zip wired from trees! Much fun was had by all and decided we all love Pembrokeshire!

Friday 3rd December saw departments throughout the school taking part in ‘National Number Day’. 8Y3 (pictured above) solved the following riddle:

Shakespeare wrote in ‘iambic pentameters’. An ‘iam’ is a double beat. ‘Penta’ is Latin for ‘five’ so there are five double beats in one line of Shakespeare’s ‘iambic pentameter’.Now, Shakespeare used iambic pentameter in his sonnets. If a Shakepearean sonnet has 14 lines, how many iams is that - and how many beats in total?

La Boheme at the London Coliseum

A group of first-time opera goers were treated to an exquisite evening of high drama and tear-jerking music at the London Coliseum. La Boheme tells the story of a group of young bohemians (artists, poets and writers) trying to make ends meet in 19th Century Paris, and contains some of Puccini’s most famous arias (songs). Our students were amazed by the delicious quality of the singers’ voices, the stunning stage sets and how easily they could relate to this “high-brow” culture.

All pupils in Year 7 have been exploring and experiencing different

environments as part of their Geography course. Pupils completed an investigation around Hounslow combining their knowledge from History, RE and Geography. Then two weeks later, and in complete contrast, they went to Shere, a village in Surrey. Pupils put the skills taught in the classroom to use by completing field sketches, sound maps and environmental surveys. Some pupils even met a horse!

Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd

November saw The Heathland School’s year 7 and 6th form teams host two touring football teams from America.

Year 7 got the first of the two games underway, convincingly beating their opponents from California 5-0.

The 6th form game was also high scoring, with The Heathland School once again victorious with a 6-3 win over their opponents from New England.

Year 12 students studying ‘AS’ Biology have benefitted from the

expertise of Dr. Gujral who has given presentations about the risk of coronary heart disease. Dr. Gujral studied Medicine at Bristol University and she has practised in hospitals in Bristol and London.

Our Biologists have really enjoyed her presentations and follow up discussion about medical practice.

On Friday 1st October over 100 students attended the PE department’s

‘Celebration of Success’ dinner that was held at Twickenham Stadium. Pupils were invited as a reward for being part of a sports team that won their Hounslow Borough competition last year. All pupils were very smartly dressed and were treated to a curry buffet meal before the awards ceremony. Congratulations to Rachel
