Dear Cathedral Family, While at the moment we are in the midst of Advent and a wonderful time of solemn joyfulness, all of us are really thinking about the great feast of The Nativity of Our Lord. Perhaps one of the most wonderful things about Christmas is that it brings us out of one world into another. Today’s newspaper, the internet and the TV tell it all. Our young women and men are still on the battlefield in various places, major and small businesses are still laying off employees, too many still don’t have a place to live or enough food to eat and each one of us still has private anxieties and concerns that get in the way of the “good life!” But when we come to celebrate Christmas of which we should never tire, we are brought out of the world I just described in part to God’s world. In fact, when we come to worship at the manger and to put out our hand to the hand of that divine and holy Baby we are doing more than being sentimental admirers. The truth is that we are pledging ourselves to accept His ways, bear witness to a place where there can be peace and tranquility and where even the most upsetting and difficult things begin to make sense, or at least become bearable. I hope that you will share this blessing with everyone you meet between now and the 25 th of December: not just your family, but a street person, the cousin you like the least, the person at the check-out counter in the supermarket or department store, an old friend to whom you’ve not spoken for years or your arch rival at work. Our Lord is THE present of all presents, THE source and sustenance of the good life. May Jesus Christ bless you in everyway and may you and yours have a joyful and merry Christmas! Faithfully, Harry Krauss

A Word From Our Dean... I hope that you will share this blessing with everyone you meet between now and the 25th of December: not just your family, but a street person, the cousin you like the least, the person at the check-out counter in the supermarket or department store, an old friend to whom you’ve not spoken for years or your arch rival at work. Our Lord is THE present of all presents, THE source and sustenance of the good life. May Jesus Christ bless you in everyway and may you and yours have a joyful and merry Christmas! From The Deacon’s Bench

Dear Friends in Christ, Once again we are entering into Advent, a time when we can think about the great promises of our faith, embodied in the coming of our Lord in a tiny manger in Bethlehem. Each year we recount the story of the line and lineage of David, the greatest king and the line that will eventually produce the Savior of the world. We have heard it so many times over the years that perhaps we get used to it and begin to forget the awesome power and splendor in the words of that story. As adults, we become engrossed in the preparations that we can run the risk of forgetting our childish— yes childish!— cries of absolute joy in entering into the story of Christmas. How unfortunate that would be! Let’s take a moment this year, and enter into the Christmas story once more as children— full of the wonder and awe of God With Us. As we do that, let us also be mindful of those who are in need in so many ways. Whatever your talents, please give out of your bounty to those who are not as fortunate. Share your joy with others and bring the true meaning of Christmas alive for those who otherwise have nothing. Please also be mindful that your church community has made available several wonderful opportunities to celebrate Christmas together, and they are listed in this newsletter. The Church-wide Christmas music program that will be offered on December 3 will give us all a chance to sing our favorite Christmas music, while also listening to an array of selections of music by our choir and other musicians. December 4 we will host a performance of The Messiah in the Nave, which will be delightful. December 10 will be the date of the dedication of the new harpsichord, and December 12 we will all go to Hallworth House at noon to sing Christmas carols for the residents of Hallworth House during the lunch hour, returning to the Cathedral after that for tea, coffee and cookies. I am sure that you will not want to miss these events that feed joy into our community life together. Be sure to see times, dates and places in the newsletter announcements for the details. Additionally, please be sure to make note of the schedule of services for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. On Christmas Eve, the children’s Christmas Holy Eucharist is at 4:00 PM and the adult service will be at 10:30 PM, starting with carols. Christmas Day Holy Eucharist will be at 10:00AM and the Sunday Holy Eucharist will be ONE SERVICE ONLY AT 10:30 AM. The same will be true for the Sunday after New Year’s Day. I look forward to seeing you all during this wonderful season, and wish for you all the joy, warmth and love that our Savior has brought into the world! Your sister in Christ, Deacon Barbara

-Thoughts from the Senior Warden-

Junior Warden’s Report: November, 2010

Hello All! Portico painting is 90% complete. The remaining work will have to wait for warm weather next spring. We will need to have some millwork done to replace the moldings that have rotted as a result of the roof leaks. I hope to find a vendor to work on that this winter so we’ll have the moldings ready for next spring. I completed painting of the plaster repairs in the Nave with some help from Al Martin’s real long pole. The Hobart dishwasher “Booster” project will be moving ahead in the coming weeks as we order a replacement part ($1500) and get a plumber to do the install. It is hoped that folks from the Soup Kitchen will help with the cost of these repairs. We’ll be replacing selected panes of glass in the windows around the church next and contacting our roofing specialist to repair leaks in the Sacristy roof. Energy Efficiency came out to replace the Church School circulator pump motor that died earlier this month so it should be nice and toasty in there on Sunday.

Thanks for your support and prayers!

Endure gracefully! Andy

By now we’ve probably all recovered from the over-indulging we had promised ourselves we wouldn’t do, but did anyway, at our Thanksgiving holiday celebrations. And as we continue to give thanks and count the blessings of our own lives, we move forward into the Christmas season and will have so very many opportunities to pay those blessings forward. Two that are very close to my own heart are here at the Cathedral. Our food pantry helps to feed so many desperate people and is so short of funds. Perhaps this month we could each find an extra few dollars which would go so far to help our clients with their Christmas dinners. The food pantry basket is on the shelf near the ushers when we enter and leave. And the Angel Tree will be arriving the last Sunday of November and will be laden with hanging angels beautifully decorated by all the children in Miss Santana’s Sunday School. They will be labeled either ‘girl’ or ‘boy’ with a specific age range. As you are able, please pick one, two, or more if you can from the tree and note them in the nearby book. Purchase the appropriate gift, wrap them, and return to the cathedral in time for them to be distributed to as many needy children as possible. It’s a wonderful feeling to know that such a small gesture can make the difference between a Christmas present or no Christmas present for a child. We aren’t living in easy times right now, but regardless of our personal situations, we are all rich in God’s love and in the love of our parish family. We are all called to pay the blessing of that richness forward. God’s Peace To All Leah

News of Note in the Parish

CATHEDRAL TO CELEBRATE “WATCH NIGHT” On December 31st, the Cathedral community will celebrate Watch Night, a gathering of the faithful at the Cathedral on New Year’s Eve. The observance of Watch Night has become most closely associated with the African and African-American worshipers. The Watch Night Services that are celebrated today in the African American community are traced back to gatherings which took place on December 31, 1862, which became known as “Freedom’s Eve”. On that night, long ago, slaves gathered together across the nation waiting for word that the Emancipation proclamation had actually become law. Although most closely associated with the African and African –American communities, it is believed that the observance of Watch Night actually occurred much earlier, in the 1700’s and was looked upon as an opportunity to renew one’s covenant with God. That second layer of meaning has been permanently woven into the fabric of the observance, making New Year’s Eve Watch Night services as much now about remembering the end of slavery as it is upon personal reflection on the state of one’s soul and to celebrate one’s covenant with God. We plan to celebrate following the 11pm mass with fellowship and refreshments. Volunteers and donations of food are still needed to make the celebration a success.

Library Sunday On the fourth Sunday of each month, we will have “Gently Used” Books for sale in Synod Hall during the coffee hours. The proceeds will benefit the Food Pantry.

This is a re-print of a column one written by Regina Brett, now 90 years old, who is published in The Plain Dealer – Cleveland, Ohio. “To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 44 lessons life has taught me. It is the most requested column I’ve ever written. My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more” 1. Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good. 2. When in doubt, just take the next small step. 3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. 4. Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick – your friends and parents will. Stay in touch. 5. Pay off your credit cards every month. 6. You don’t have to win every argument. Agree to disagree. 7. Cry with someone. It’s more healing than crying alone. 8. It’s okay to get angry with God. He can take it. 9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck. 10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile. 11. Make peace with your past so it won’t mess up your present. 12. It’s okay to let your children see you cry. 13. Don’t compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about. 14. If a relationship has to be secret, you shouldn’t be in it. 15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don’t worry; God never blinks. 16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind. 17. Get rid of everything that isn’t useful, beautiful or joyful. 18. Whatever doesn’t kill you really does make you stronger. 19. It’s never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else. 20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don’t take ‘no’ for an answer. 21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don’t save anything for a special occasion. Today is special. 22. Over prepare, then go with the flow. 23. Be eccentric now. Don’t wait for old age to wear purple. 24. No one is in charge of your happiness but you. 25. Frame every so-called disaster with these words: “In five years, will this matter?” 26. Always chose life. 27. Forgive everyone everything. 28. What other people think of you is none of your business. 29. Time heals almost everything. Give time, time. 30. However good or bad a situation is, it will change. 31. Don’t take yourself so seriously…no one else does. 32. Believe in miracles. 33. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn’t do. 34. Don’t audit life. Show up and make the most of it now. 35. Growing old beats the alternative - dying young. 36. Your children only get one childhood. 37. All that truly matters in end is that you loved. 38. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere. 39. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else’s, we’d grab ours back. 40. Envy is a waste of time. You already have everything you need. 41. The best is yet to come. 42. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up, and show up. 43. Yield. 44. Life isn’t tied with a bow, but it is still a gift.
