Charitable Gift Annuities: The Gift That Keeps On GivingNews about today’s economy changes daily—from better to worse to hopeful again—but your enjoyment of quality public broadcasting is a constant. Economic conditions have made it necessary for many of us to make careful choices about how to spend and save, and how to continue to make gifts with our limited resources. That is one reason why WTIU is especially appreciative of those who have chosen to support us year after year. A charitable choice that benefits both WTIU and your pocketbook is a Charitable Gift Annuity through the Indiana University Foundation. A Charitable Gift Annuity is an opportunity to make a long lasting contribution to WTIU while providing an additional stream of income for you or a loved one. A Charitable Gift Annuity provides you with:• A tax deduction in the year of the gift• Fixed income for life—guaranteed by the
assets of the IU Foundation • The knowledge that you are supporting
WTIU—and our greater viewing community
Charitable Gift Annuity Rates:
AGE RATE 65 5.9% 70 6.3% 75 7.0% 80 7.6% 85 8.7% 90+ 10.0% It is hard to find a high, guaranteed, rate of return in today’s market. Rates will decrease slightly next year at most ages due to the low interest rate environment—so now is the perfect time to act! The minimum gift is $5,000 and you can choose to benefit any program you like. Make a gift that keeps on giving—a gift to yourself and to WTIU—for the holidays! For a “no stress, no commitment” illustration showing how a Charitable Gift Annuity could increase your cash flow, reduce your taxes and make a significant contribution to public television, contact Nancy Krueger at (812) 855-2935 or [email protected].
Viewer Support is VitalWTIU will air a variety of specials this month—ranging from music specials like The Weekly Special Holiday Music Showcase and Jeff Back Honors Les Paul to history specials like Saving Places and Celebrating North America’s Steam Railways. These special programs are selected for their ability to entertain, enlighten, educate, and inspire you. As more viewers become WTIU members, support grows for the programs that we all enjoy year round. These membership campaign specials offer current members the opportunity to renew, and other viewers the opportunity to contribute. Visit wtiu.indiana.edu to learn how you can renew your membership or make an additional gift.
Thank you for all you do to support WTIU.

Chihuly Fire & LightFriday, December 17 at 9:30pm; Sunday, December 19 at 3pm; Monday, December 23 at 1pm
At once organic and otherworldly, pure and complicated, Dale Chihuly’s glass works brilliantly combine the simplicity of the medium with the extraordinary innovation of the artist. From Chihuly’s studio in Seattle to installation sites throughout San Francisco, Chihuly Fire & Light observes the artist at work with his team as he conceives and creates his most ambitious exhibition to date, Chihuly at the de Young. This 2008 exhibition included 11 galleries of new and archival works representing the breadth and scope of the artist’s creative vision during the last four decades. From the Mille Fiori (a 56-foot garden of glass) to the Saffron Tower (a 30-foot neon sculpture), Chihuly’s exquisite sculptures challenge convention with bold color, dramatic forms and extraordinary composition. In addition to interviews with architect Frank Gehry and other artists, art critics and museum executives, the film highlights the collaborative qualities of Chihuly’s creative process, in which he entrusts hundreds of talented glassblowers to execute his vision.

Masterpiece Contemporary: FramedSunday, December 26 at 9pm
For nearly 40 years, Masterpiece has enthralled audiences with the works of the finest classic and contemporary writers interpreted by the world’s foremost actors. The Masterpiece Contemporary series takes place in the fall and features dramas set in modern times. A forlorn art curator tries to hide the entire collection of London’s National Gallery near an eccentric, inquisitive Welsh village, on Framed, adapted by Frank Cottrell Boyce from his best-selling children’s novel about art, love, life, and Ninja Turtles. Boyce, who also wrote Masterpiece’s powerful holocaust drama God on Trial, was inspired by the relocation of the National Gallery’s treasures to the Manod slate mine in Wales during World War II. In Framed, he depicts a similar emergency—this time due to catastrophically deteriorating plumbing at the museum—which ends up sparking a clash of cultures that is humorous, heart-warming, and romantically satisfying.

The Samuel Barber Centenary CelebrationSunday, December 5, 8 p.m.
This year we celebrate the centenary of American composer Samuel Barber, who made distinguished contributions to the orchestral, choral, operatic, piano, and chamber music repertories. Hosted by Bill McGlaughlin, this program features the Curtis Music Institute’s contemporary music ensemble performing works by Barber, including a fragment of his 1928 Violin Sonata, long believed lost. The recently discovered third movement is paired with two pieces it inspired: Curtis graduate Jonathan Holland’s Sonata Variation and student Chris Rogerson’s Lullaby: No Bad Dreams. The pieces were presented together to form a complete violin sonata created by three generations of composers nurtured at Curtis. Other works on the program include Barber’s Hermit Songs, Dover Beach, Piano Sonata in E-Flat Minor, and Summer Music.
Noel: A Christmas from ParisSunday, December 19, 9 p.m.
The Westminster Choir from Princeton, New Jersey, takes you on a musical Christmas tour from medieval Paris to the present day. The program combines folk music (Christmas carols began as folk dances in France) with plainsong from a French priory (“O come, O come Emanuel”). Also featured is polyphony from the great gothic Cathedrals along with baroque music from the Court of Versailles. The romantic tradition is present in Gabriel Fauré’s “Sanctus” and a performance of Poulenc’s “O Magnum Mysterium.” American mezzo Jennifer Larmore is joined by organist Kenneth Cowan, with Anna Reinersman, harp and Lisa Cowan, violin and early music consort players from the Juilliard School. The program emanates from New York’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Bill McGlaughlin hosts.

Independent Lens: The CallingPart 1 Monday, December 20 at 9pm; Sunday, December 26 at 2pmPart 2 Tuesday, December 21 at 9pm; Sunday, December 26 at 4pm
A behind-the-scenes look at young Americans—Christian, Jewish, Catholic, and Muslim—preparing to become the nation’s next generation of religious leaders, The Calling follows their transformation from idealistic students into ordained religious professionals. This four-hour, two-part special event explores the forces that are drawing a new generation of young people to serve their communities and their faith. The Calling follows its subjects from their first days of training, through years of study, and into their early practice as religious leaders. We see them within and beyond the walls of school, wrestling with the sacrifices they’ve made to pursue this path. They debate theology and philosophy, learn to deliver sermons, perform their first weddings and funerals, and counsel people in crisis. We also get to know them as ordinary young people at the crossroads of their lives, struggling with doubt and fear, dating and family, and the challenges of becoming an adult. Although from different ethnic, geographic, and religious backgrounds, the young people featured in The Calling share similar traits: they’re
charismatic and likeable, driven and self-reflective, confident yet humble. Each is seeking to reconcile the modern world with their ancient faith, balancing egos with a desire to serve, and blazing new paths to leadership while preserving age-old traditions. The United States is one of the most religiously observant and spiritually diverse countries in the world, yet mainstream media has surprisingly under-represented the significance of faith in the U.S. Pluralism has been explored almost exclusively in terms of race and culture, while explorations of faith often focus on scandals or extremism. The Calling underscores spiritual common ground and offers intimate portraits that provide a fresh and nuanced portrayal of faith in today’s America.
