In In In In Persian SandPersian SandPersian SandPersian Sand By Chris Milici

With only 45,000 original miles and the beautiful Persian Sand paint only just starting to show some age, Jeff and Ginnie Goldstein have a keeper. During the 1960s, Cadillac styling became more graceful and restrained as Bill Mitchell gradually unified the design. To the American public, Cadillac remained a symbol of prestige, success, and good taste. The featured 1960 model, a Coupe DeVille, was priced starting at $5,252 and finished in Camden cloth with matching leathers. A rare color for 1960, Persian Sand was optioned for the car. The car was originally purchased from Rickenbaugh Cadillac in Colorado, which is still in business today. As the story has passed down through three previous owners, the owner of Rickenbaugh Cadillac, Ralph Rickenbaugh, loved this car and refused to sell it. The original window sticker is still attached to the window, but the glass was removed and replaced in the car for the preservation of the sticker. The previous owners very very meticulous about the car’s car, as is evidenced from the number of carefully completed lubrication stickers inside the driver’s door jam. The car is complete with each and every manual originally intended for the car, including the special book for the radio. Jeff and Ginnie acquired the car in February of this year from a classic car dealership in Texas; not a bad place for the car to reside for preservation. Jeff explains the car was actually keyed at the dealership, but that did not dissuade him! Jeff says “I just keep up with regular maintenance like oil changes and lubrications. The car just floats right along over it’s original exhaust system. We really love the color, especially as it is rare for 1960.” The 1959-1960 Cadillac was designed during a period of great change within GM. Harley Earl was heavily involved with the '59s, but Bill Mitchell took over after Earl's retirement and was mainly responsible

for the 1960 models. Under Mitchell, a new freshness permeated the air -- a freshness and youthfulness that was to become the hallmark of most cars developed under his regime. Many

Welcome and Introduction: The tenth meeting of the New England Region Cadillac & LaSalle Club, Inc. was held on Tuesday, November 9 at Spirito’s Restaurant at the Italo-American Club, Providence, RI. The Club would like to thank Paul DiMaio, Secretary, for reserving a private room

in the restaurant for the meeting. The meeting was called to order by Joe Gildea, President, at 7:37 p.m. after the 13 members present finished dinner! All were happy to see a few new faces that have not previously had the chance to attend a meeting. Secretary’s Report: As there was no objection the minutes published in the November newsletter, the minutes were approved as presented. Treasurer’s Report: Mark Paré presented the financial statement through October 31, 2010. The report indicated the Club has a net loss of approx. $1,000 for the calendar year. Copies of the report are available upon

Eds. Note: I receive a lot of e-mail from our membership about new cars, trips, and other Cadillac- or LaSalle-related information. Although not worthy of an entire article, they make for light reading in this new, occasional section, which highlights member activities from around the Region. New Acquisitions Dave Becker, who many of you recognize from the car club called The ‘58 Owners’ Association, is also very active in NERCLC. He recently acquired a “new” 1992 Brougham and writes “Look what I bought...and the owner drove it to my house from Maryland! I saw this Craigslist ad on a Tuesday, and the owner drove the car to Braintree, MA on Friday. When he got here, the mileage was 27,324. That's why I bought it. I couldn't pass it up, It's practically brand new. The photos are the ones I took in my driveway.” The car is mint, having the

request from the Treasurer. The report was unanimously accepted. He also introduced the following new members, and their applications for membership were unanimously approved: Ralph Shippee, Coventry RI; Al Martin, Stoughton, MA; Jesus Menendez, Hyde Park MA; Darin McDonnell, Brockton, MA; Michael Siemienkiewicz, Webster MA (Mike now holds the record for the longest surname in the Region); Michael Vining, Stoneham MA; Herbert Clark III, Essex CT; Robert Martin, Tolland CT; Thomas Hanecak, Norfolk CT; Tony Avakian, Cranston RI; Kierk Dudman, Groton MA; Norman Perry,

2.78 rear-end (RWD) and option 5.7 Litre, fuel-injected engine. It is finished in Antelope Metallic Firemist with matching leather. Joe Cutler also added to his collection. He writes “I just bought another one...not a Cadillac, but from the right family! This one's a real gem....totally original, rock-solid and unmolested. It's a 1950 Pontiac Chieftain Deluxe convertible. I've already named it The Chief! I purchased it from the second owner who bought it in ‘52! It's been in dry storage since 1970 and has 76,000 miles. This car is loaded with factory accessories including dual Guide spotlights, Guide fog lamps, GM illuminated compass, gas door guard, deluxe bumper guards, etc. It has the straight 8 with a factory 3-speed manual. The car has a near mint original red leather interior, and even has the original top!

West Tisbury MA; Keith Milligan, Seekonk MA; Donald Thiederman, Hull MA. Welcome to the Club! Membership: Joe Gildea updated the members on the membership audit process required by CLC. A letter was prepared and sent to all members identified as needing to join the National Club, which is a requirement under National CLC By-Laws. Next, a letter will be sent to all National members that are not Region members, using the CLC Directory, to try to increase membership. Chuck Grysell suggested the NERCLC membership form by altered to include an option to also join National CLC. The Region Treasurer would collect the money, then complete the National CLC application form on behalf of the joining member. Other regions within CLC do this. Newsletter: Chris Milici reported the newsletter is in great shape, and more material, especially Member Profiles and Tech Tips, are needed. Website: Chris Milici is again looking for someone to help run the Club website. Old Business: Due to a schedule conflict, the Annual Spring Cadillac Day at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, MA will be held one week earlier on May 15, 2011.

Members discussed an NERCLC donation to the CLCMRC in support of the new capital campaign to raise funds to build our new museum at Gilmore Car Museum, Hickory Corners, MI. Several ideas were mentioned, and once a better idea of the upfront costs associated with the 2013 Grand National is determined, a specific giving plan will be announced. Members are asked to begin thinking about a possible donation and look in the January newsletter for giving instructions. Elections: Ballots were mailed to all members and Brian Cristy, Election Chairperson, has started to receive some votes. The results will be announced at the December member meeting and published in the January newsletter. Officers will be sworn in at the Holiday Party on January 29. New Business: Joe Gildea updated the members about the upcoming AACA Grand Caravan, which will be held in Maine in 2013. Joe will work with Chris Charlton, the New England Region AACA President and also an NERCLC member, to ensure the Grand Caravan does not conflict with the Grand National, allowing local members to attend both, perhaps back-to-back. Chris Milici will contact the Minuteman Chapter BCA regarding the 2011 Buick National Meet, which

will be hosted at the Crawne Plaza, Danvers, MA. There may be an opportunity for a reciprocal agreement between our clubs, enhancing both the 2011 BCA Meet and the 2013 GN. Rich Esposito spoke of his recent purchase of a antique Buick. He said is was originally purchased from Boggess Buick. Or is that Burgess, or maybe Bogue? Well, it was a long story, nonetheless! Joe introduced an upcoming event that might be of interest to the membership, Roaring ‘20s Weekend August 26-28, 2011 at the Mt. Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods, NH. Chris will post more information about this even in an upcoming newsletter and on the website. Dave Vazquez discussed plans for the January 29, 2011 Holiday Party, which will be held at Turnpike Café Bar and Grill, Canton, MA. All of the plans have been finalized, and the invitation will be included with the December newsletter. Meetings: Upcoming meetings include: December 7, Maxwell-Silverman’s Restaurant, Worcester, MA. The January meeting coincides with the Holiday Party and the Feb. meeting is not finalized. Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at approx. 9:00 p.m. CPCPCPCP

Top Tier GasolineTop Tier GasolineTop Tier GasolineTop Tier Gasoline By Chris Milici

Some of you may have heard about, read about, or even swear by something called Top Tier Gas. It is in and out of the media occasionally, but more and more auto manufacturers are recommending, sometimes right in the literature that comes with your car, use of Top Tier Gas. So, what is Tope Tier Gas? The question requires brief history lesson. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) introduced a minimum gasoline detergent standard in 1995, and soon after, most gasoline marketers who had previously provided higher levels of detergents reduced the concentration level of detergents in commercial gasoline to meet the new standard. Whether the

higher detergent levels were necessary remains disputed. The levels required are necessary to meet emissions standards, but not engine longevity standards. In 2004 BMW, General Motors, Honda, and Toyota established a proprietary standard for a class of gasoline called Top Tier Detergent Gasoline, which contained increased levels of detergents. Volkswagen/Audi joined the consortium in 2007. Gas formulators can participate and obtain Top Tier listing by meeting certain standards. In 2004 the standard was adopted by just a few gasoline distributors, including Chevron, QuickTrip, Conoco-Phillips, Shell, Entec Stations, and

MFA Oil Company. Since then, many gasoline distributors have met the proprietary standard. Today, Top Tier Gasoline can be found in numerous gas stations all over North America. ExxonMobil, Aloha Petroleum, QuickTrip, Somerset Refinery Inc., Tri-Par Oil Company, Texaco, Phillips 66, Shell, Chevron, Sunoco Canada and Petro Canada have since received Top Tier recognition. Meeting this standard allows gasoline marketers to differentiate themselves from their competition. All stations selling the higher detergent gasoline must meet Top Tier standards before the brand is qualified. While General Motors' "field guru" Andrew Buczynsky says that no one

gasoline that causes engine buildup, he says that top tier detergent gasoline will remove the deposits.

1 Without

some level of detergents, engine deposits form in most vehicles and could lead to reduced fuel efficiency, acceleration, and power as well as increasing emissions and rough idling. According to its marketers, all vehicles will benefit from using Top Tier Detergent Gasoline over gasoline meeting the basic EPA standard. Deposits will reputedly be minimized on fuel injectors, intake valves, and combustion chambers. New vehicles will allegedly benefit by keeping engines clean and running optimally, while older vehicles may benefit with increased engine performance and prolonged vehicle life. Using Top Tier Gas is purported to have the following benefits over other gasoline that just meets minimum EPA detergent standards: • Improved fuel efficiency • Reduced driving upsets (rough

idle, stalling and surge) • Improved acceleration • Increased engine power • Reduced emissions

However, with any story, there is debate. Several car manufacturers believe that using top tier detergent gasoline does has an impact on all

vehicles, but critics believe that using top tier detergent gasoline is only critical on high-end vehicles; otherwise, using engine cleaner every 100,000 miles should clean up any carbon buildup. Other critics say that top tier detergent gasoline cause little or no decrease on the amount of buildup on inside a car's engine. Before the Top Tier standard, a less know standard, called the BMW Unlimited Mileage Test, was used. Arco, a fuel distributor, still claims to meet this standard. However, BMW now mentions Top Tier gas in its owner's manuals, but not the unlimited mileage test. And Arco is not listed as a Top Tier gas supplier. Ford recommends BP fuels and even mentions it on Ford vehicle gas caps, but BP is not on the Top Tier gas list. Some not on the Top Tier list say their customers don't care, and wouldn't pay the little extra it would cost to meet the standards. Price may in fact be the biggest factor. Interestingly, Sunoco, though well-known as the fuel of NASCAR racing, isn't a Top Tier brand. Tesoro, which retails gasoline through 800 of its stations and distributes fuel to Wal-Mart and others, views the detergent issue as a gimmick. Tesoro doesn't put in additional additives because their customers are price shoppers.

Citgo Petroleum, the Venezuelan brand, is another big name that's not Top Tier. Using stronger additives costs more, and even if it's just a penny a gallon, there is no known corresponding benefit to their customers of similar magnitude, according to statements made by the company. The company simply strives to provide quality products to the consumer at the best value. When a truck transport driver goes into a bulk fuel terminal, it's all computerized. He punches in that he's picking up a specific brand, and that brand's additive package gets injected while the truck is being filled. Drivers sometimes have to fill up with bulk gasoline, then stop at a branded terminal for that brand's additives. Further clouding the question of what is good gas, brands often sell one another's fuels. Gasoline, after all, is fungible. Marathon can market Shell or Mobil gas, for example. The substitute fuel might contain a different additive package, but it's supposed to be at least as effective as what the station normally sells. In the end, the consumer must make its own decision. Imagine the smallest Cadillac you can. Now make it even smaller. You might end up with the ULC, short for Urban Luxury Concept (as opposed to Unusual Little Car). In mid-November, Cadillac debuted the ULC at the International Auto Show in Los Angeles. Packing a 1.0L 3-cylinder engine with electric assist routed through a dual-clutch automated manual, the ULC would be expected to deliver mileage numbers of approximately 56 city/65 highway, while providing urban-friendly packaging and parking ease. From the Cadillac Motor Division press release, “It seats four, with easy access to all seats available via a pair of scissor-type doors that extend outward and rotate

forward when opened. The design fosters a roomy passenger area, which is trimmed in exquisite materials and features next-generation interactive technology. Touch-pad screens and projected readouts take

the place of most traditional gauges and serve as the audio and climate system controls – a design feature that helps open up the interior for greater passenger space. I’ll be there is a lot of Cadillac stuffed into that little car! CPCPCPCP
