ISSUE
18CEMBER
Over the past year, I have had the pleasure of working
with a great Chamber staff, plus a slate of Board members
and volunteers who have made, and continue to make, my
Presidency run well in its duration. I have worked hard in
balancing my responsibilities at St. Lawrence Parks
Commission while trying to make this the best City in
which to live, work and do business. I do plan to stay
involved in constructive ways in this community to
influence change.
At the start of my term, I challenged the network to
embrace social networking as a positive business tool. It is
not a fad. This will continue as an outreach to our
members, energizing the Chamber as the voice of
business in our community.
Within the Chamber, there were serious issues to be dealt
with. The Board of Directors assisted interim General
Manager Matt Hutcheon as he unveiled the Chambers
first Strategic Plan. This blueprint will be used to usher in a
new era for the Chamber. We will continue to host
numerous events in 2012 with a strong emphasis on
business, while cultivating a more focused light on
business advocacy and education to our membership. If
we are branded as the Voice of Business, we aim to back
up that claim. Overall, 2011 saw the Chamber maintain a
positive bottom line, while membership was strongly-
retained and new members were attracted. Next year, the
Board will be infused with 8 new Directors to help take us
boldly into 2012.
Happy Holidays to all and best wishes for a successful New
Year.
Fearless speakers, passionate promotion

The Art of Networking Networking
offers opportunities for the full spectrum
of our Chamber membership. Why shouldyou attend our Chamber events?
There are a variety of reasons to attend conferencesand events that are related to your niche. It's notalways just about the information presented.
Networking
One of the best reasons to attend these conferencesis networking with other professionals in your industry.Trading business cards with people and making new
contacts can be of huge benefit down the road. Theysay it's not whatyou know, it's whoyou know. I like tothink that whatyou know is pretty important too, butwhoyou know can't hurt either.
Branding
In the process of this networking you will be brandingyour business and yourself as a professional and/oran expert in your industry. If you do this well enough(and attend enough conferences) along withmaintaining a positive reputation on the web, you canbecome one of the people that other people in your
industry want to get to know. If you achieve thatstatus, chances are your business will be doing fine. You can also hand out branded promotional items.
Learning
Let's not discount the actual knowledge you can takeaway from a conference. The quality of informationpresented will obviously vary from conference toconference, but the good ones can give you great fuelfor your marketing campaigns or other businessstrategies. If nothing else, they can get you hyped up
to go and try some new things.
Chamber Advocacy in Action
Creating forums via Chamber meetings and otheractivities for partners such as KIP, KEYS, KEDCO,ELORIN, ACFOMI etc to present information onimpact scenarios and issues important to theworkforce, employees, employers and prospectivemembers.
Take a leadership role in opposing legislation thatharms business growth (constrictive bylaws, permit
processes and approvals), and proactively supportpro-business public policy through focused advocacy.(ex: hiking equalization heads in beds paymentsfrom the province.
Seek to expedite building permits withoutcompromising public safety.
Seek a fairer, consistent regulatory environment thatencourages private sector investment.
Create a grassroots lobbying organization (structure)of like-minded economic partners, their respectivesectors and employees.
OCC Launching Three Policy Committees
The OCC is in the process of establishing three newPolicy Committees focusing on: finance and economiccompetitiveness; productivity and human capital; andsustainability. We are currently seeking nominationsfor membership on those Committees.
More information about these new OCC PolicyCommittees can be found on the OCC website.http://occ.on.ca/2011/occ-launching-three-policy-committees/
OCC Supports Canada Joining the Trans-PacificPartnershipOn November 13, 2011, Prime Minister StephenHarper announced that Canada will formally apply to
join the emerging Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)trade group of Asia-Pacific countries. The OCC is infull support of the federal government's decision toapply for membership to this trade group. Moreinformation about TPP can be found on the OCCwebsite. http://occ.on.ca/2011/occ-supports-canada%e2%80%99s-decision-to-join-trans-pacific-partnership/
