Program Updates

The Membership Council hosted another successful Membership Orientation on November 2. It brings us great pleasure to create awareness about the programs and benefits of Chamber membership. Special thanks to: Subway of downtown Gettysburg for donating lunch, Fabio’s Catering & Events for donating dessert and DL3 Systems for technology support. Next year’s dates will be announced in the next edition. And remember, all members are welcome to attend whether you’re new to a business, new to the area or you plain just need a refresher on the benefits.

June 7, 2012 is the date of the Chamber’s annual Golf Outing. The historic Hanover Country Club will be hosting the event next year. Mark your calendars now and plan to attend. Additional details will be available soon! Event sponsors include: Adams Electric Cooperative, Inc. and Carl E. Frantz, Inc. There are sponsorship opportunities still remaining. If you would like to learn more about how to promote your business through this event, please contact Jennifer McCleaf at [email protected] or 717.334.8151.

Nine members of the Business & Industry Team met on October 27 to discuss the results of the recent membership survey of training needs. This was a robust discussion, however it was difficult to reach any firm conclusions. This is because only 9.5% percent of the membership responded to the survey,

even after three reminders. The team does appreciate the efforts of those who took the time to respond, and concluded the following:

• The low response rate to the survey may be an indicator that training is not a big issue for the membership.

• There are many existing agencies within the community with whom we can partner. Among those are the (Harrisburg Area Community College) HACC-Gettysburg Campus, the Gettysburg Convention and Visitors Bureau, and other nearby Chambers of Commerce that are already offering training (such as Hanover), to name a few.

• The best role for the Gettysburg Adams Chamber is to serve as a referral resource for existing programs. We have a very talented, industrious staff, but one which is fully engaged in providing other services to the membership. Adding another significant duty such as designing and presenting training programs would be counter-productive at this time.• Training sessions characteristics include: - About two hours in length, but no more than half a day in duration; - Multiple sessions of the same class so that businesses can send all of their employees;

Community PartnersA time to support small Businessby Carl Whitehill, Media Relations Manager, Gettysburg Convention and Visitors Bureau

It’s Beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Charming gettysburgby Walt Tuchalski, Member, Gettysburg Area Retail Merchants’ Association

Launched just last year, Small Business Saturday—held November 26 this year—is a time to highlight, recognize and most importantly, shop at locally owned stores. As we all know, Adams County is packed with locally owned stores and the holidays are a great time to explore the streets and towns of our community, helping out small businesses.

Sponsored by American Express, Small Business Saturday was created to fulfill the biggest need of small business owners—creating demand for their products and services.

While tourism plays only a part in the success of some small businesses in Adams County, others rely more heavily on tourism. These tourist-driven small businesses play an important role in bringing visitors to Gettysburg and Adams County, but they aren’t just here for the visitors.

Throughout the county, residents and visitors alike can enjoy small businesses such as art galleries, boutiques, clothing stores, farmers’ markets, small manufacturers, professional services, financial institutions, construction, services and health care.

In the tourism sector alone, small businesses account for museums, stores, wineries, restaurants, accommodations, campgrounds and a variety of attractions. An overwhelming portion of our membership is made up of small businesses.

Visitors travel to Adams County for its small towns and rural feel. Small businesses are a big part of that. Visitors want something they can’t get at home.

The Convention & Visitors Bureau and American Express, don’t expect everyone to give up chain stores, national restaurants and popular hotels, they just want people to develop a taste for locally owned businesses. Their products are unique, the service is personal and the quality is great.

In addition to encouraging Adams County residents and visitors to explore small businesses every day, the CVB urges small businesses to get involved in spreading the word. For more information on Small Business Saturday, visit www.smallbusinesssaturday.com.

Charming downtown Gettysburg is decorated for Christmas. The tree is standing tall on the Square, Santa is keeping visiting hours in his Shanty near the House of Bender every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, GARMA retail stores are stocked with millions of gift ideas, GARMA restaurants are booked with holiday parties, registration is underway for the annual $1,000.00 GARMA Shopping Spree Giveaway at participating member locations, and the town is buzzing with the sounds of the Season.

The Gettysburg Area Retail Merchant’s Association (GARMA) welcomes Christmas and has helped decorate the town in keeping with the custom and heritage of the Holiday’s through the ages. GARMA welcomes you to shop, dine, and enjoy the Season in Gettysburg. We enjoy great cooperation with Gettysburg Borough to provide you FREE parking after 12 noon daily at marked meters throughout the downtown area now through New Year’s Day. This partnership gives Gettysburg a welcoming edge over other communities in the area.

Register for your chance to win a $1,000.00 GARMA Shopping Spree or one of scores of other prizes at participating member locations. Look for the colorful window sign inviting you in to register for the drawing. You may enter once per member location, per day, so visit as many GARMA members as often as possible to improve your odds of winning this fantastic prize. The Grand Prize Drawing will be held on Wednesday, December 21, on Gettysburg’s Lincoln Square, under the ACNB Bank Clock, near the ACNB Bank branch office, 2 Chambersburg Street. All entry boxes from across the community will be consolidated into the GARMA Christmas Spin Bin under the clock by 3pm to allow you one last chance to enter the Shopping Spree Giveaway. ACNB Bank and GARMA officials will witness Santa drawing the Grand Prize Winner at 4:45pm that evening.

GARMA Gift Certificates are honored at most member locations. Gift Certificates are available in denominations of $5, $10, and $20 each to allow you maximum flexibility in sizing your gift, while providing maximum flexibility for the recipient when redeeming your gift at participating GARMA members. Purchase GARMA Gift Certificates at T&S Clothes and Gifts at 1 Chambersburg Street, Just Jennifer at 33 York Street, the Gettysburg Gift Center at 297 Steinwehr Avenue, or Goin’ Postal at 1863 Gettysburg Village Drive.

The Gettysburg Area Retail Merchants’ Association’s mission is to help create, promote, advertise, and represent the betterbusiness interests of the membership of the organization, and this is never more apparent than at Christmas time. Membership in GARMA is open to businesses and professionals trading in the area within five miles around Gettysburg. Learn more about the benefits of GARMA membership by contacting Walt Tuchalski at 717.309.2482 or [email protected]. Not every little boy dreams of growing up and making the perfect Eggplant Parmesan, but Fabio Carella, the founder of Fabio’s Events & Catering, did! Young Fabio began dreaming of being a Caterer and Party Planner while at his Mom’s side in the family kitchen in Sicily. The power of the aroma of garlic, oregano and rosemary from that quaint kitchen remains with him and is the main ingredient in every unique meal he creates and every party he plans.

Fabio’s creativity extends to the planning of his events as well. He strives to really “cater” to each and every client and their total party needs. It’s as if he can’t help but plan both food and décor, arrange rentals and entertainment. It takes time to make a client’s dream a reality, and he weaves the personality of the client throughout the scheme of the evening. “Every gathering is a reason to celebrate.”

Fabio was taught that the most important ingredient when cooking is love. The passion of preparing food is transmitted to your plate and you can taste it and not having to rely on a printed recipe means that your food tastes fresh each time. The love of food is handed down from generation to generation with the tradition of the recipes.”

With the traditions of Sicily and advice from his mother, Fabio arrived in America in 1995. He also brought with him the traditional cooking methods he learned at Italy’s Culinary Institute, “Alberghiero.” He relies thos methods when making everything from tantalizing hors d’ouvres and fabulous entrees to delicious desserts for groups from 5 to 500. One of Fabio’s favorite places to cater is Hauser Estates and Winery. “Every time I work for them I bring something unique to the table. Never the same thing twice!” Uniqueness is something he strives

for in every creation combining the old world methods and twisting it to adapt to American palettes. His main goal is to marry the old and new into his own special creation. In bringing his taste of Sicily to Gettysburg he wants to change perceptions of how real Italian food and hospitality should be. “Every town in Italy has a different flavor to their food. I want everyone to try something new…to wrap them in the flavor of the culture.”

The next big event that Fabio is taking on is an Open Air Market in Biglerville with a Sicilian feel. “I can remember going to the open air markets in Sicily all day long and don’t close until late at night. There is music in the streets and you can hear people calling out to each other by name. People can purchase handmade gifts, crafts, and jewelry. They really support the community; it brings the essence of what we sing about at Christmas to life.’

The date is set for December 18th from 3-10 pm. Thirty Four vendors plan to participate and the Biglerville High School is planning to add music and color with roving carolers. Contemporary Christmas music will be provided by Rockin’ Out DJ Service from York, PA. There’s even a big bonfire for roasting marshmallows and complementary hot chocolate and coffee. Come out and support your local economy.

As long as Fabio keeps planning the extravagant and the simple we’re sure that the Sicilian way of life and food will thrive in America and especially Gettysburg. Visit Fabio at www.fabiosevents.com and let him take good care of your next event!

Johnson, General Manager for the Country Inn & Suites By Carlson in Gettysburg, brings enthusiasm and the young entrepreneur’s perspective to the Board room table. Welcome Duane and Bryan!

Conversely, we say good-bye to Greg Livelsberger, Frank Pizzuto and Steve Rasmussen whose Board terms will expire at the end of the year. Livelsberger served for two three-year terms. While on the Board, he has been the Board Secretary, an at-large member of the Executive Team, member and Chair of the Membership Council, and the infamous Holiday Basket Bingo caller for several years.

Pizzuto joined the Board to complete an unexpired term in addition to serving one full three year term of his own. During his tenure on the Board, Pizzuto has served as a member of the Finance, Winter’s Palette, and Awards Teams. In addition, he generously provides his time and ATV to the Wine & Music Festival each year.

Rasmussen has been a member of the Boardfor two three-year terms. He led the transitionteam to select the new President, served as Board Chair, Board Treasurer, Finance Team Chair, and member of the Membership, Wine& Music Festival and Business & Industry Teams. We extend a sincere thank you to each for the time and commitment these three individuals have given to the Chamber. Their leadership during their time on the Board has been invaluable.
