I love November and December. The holidays just seem to string along perfectly. Time with extended family, different assortments of foods, my 5 year old and 2 year old sons getting amped up for Christmas are all great, but I really enjoy identifying gifts for people. I like to watch people open the gifts, but I find true enjoyment in thinking about their previous year or who they are, and meandering the halls of the local mall and having that one thing that jumps out at me that would be just perfect for them. I don’t get stressed out or make lists, I just take the time by myself to think about the person and walk around the mall.

Just some of my ramblings, but I do hope that you are able to do what gives you enjoyment, and that you have a fantastic end to 2011. Happy Holidays!

Company Fun Johnson Screens Community Involvement Team

Sponsors Movember Fundraiser

The Johnson Screens’ Community Involvement team is proud to be supporting the Movember movement. Movember is an organization that raises funds and awareness for various men’s health issues; particularly prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men. Movember is responsible for the sprouting of mustaches on thousands of men’s faces in the United States and around the world. Visit us.movember.com for more information on the organization. In Johnson Screens’ New Brighton office, 13 wonderful, fun-spirited “Mo Bros” participated in Movember by growing a mustache through the entire month of November. The Johnson Screens Mo Bros are: Daryn Bertelson, Steve Dehn, Russ Dojan, Dan Ganfield, Darrin Lindblom, Mike Moryn, Chad Mrazek, Shane Rogers, Ehrich Shaw, Al Smith, Daiv Sowder, Brad Vanasse and Tim Wolf. If you would like to support the Movember cause and the Johnson Screens Mo Bros, here is how to do so:

Visit mosista.co/johnsonscreens and donate to one or all of the Mo Bros participating (there is a competition for the Mo Bro that raises the most funds, so feel free to support just one or all of the Mo Bros!)

If you know of anyone else who would be interested in supporting the Movember cause, please forward this information on. It is an excellent way to spread the awareness of often-overlooked men’s health issues. The Johnson Screens Community Involvement Team would like to thank the Mo Bros for their participation, and the employees and community for their support of this fundraising effort.

Johnson Screens is located in New Brighton, and is the world leader in innovative screening technology

Highly motivated employees often find their motivation from working in a pleasant office environment. It is to your advantage to make your workplace a happy place for your employees — the more they can play and relieve stress, the harder and more efficiently they’ll work.

Here are some creative, action-oriented ideas to help you inject a little “fun” into your workplace:

• Allow for flextime. Giving your employees some flexibility in their work schedules shows your concern for their personal lives. In addition, allowing employees to work from home occasionally can be a great motivator, making the days in the office a lot more productive and less stressful.

• Schedule exercise breaks. There’s no reason you can’t copy what many larger corporations are doing these days — squeezing in stretch/dance breaks throughout the day during which employees step out of their offices or cubicles to do a group stretch to music. Every week pick a new exercise and a new stretch leader to get everyone going.

• Cultivate fun. Make your office an exciting place to be by holding frequent contests, celebrations, and team-building activities. Surprise everyone by ordering in lunch or by starting out the day with coffee and pastries in the kitchen. Be creative.

• Encourage mini time-outs. Encourage everyone to relieve daily stress by taking a few minutes to do something they enjoy. A small break in the day’s routine can really reinvigorate a person’s thought process. Take short breaks yourself and encourage others to take them. Do whatever helps you to disengage from the project at hand: work on a crossword puzzle, listen to music, talk a walk around the block, or browse through a nearby bookstore.

• Create a fun squad. Ask for employees' ideas for ways to add fun to the workplace. Consider creating a “fun squad” whose job is to dream up ways to bring lighthearted fun into the office. Let people use their creativity to raise the level of laughter, and there will be creativity left over for more concrete business objectives.

• Acknowledge anniversaries. Celebrate the day each employee joined your team. Let them know how much you appreciate their contributions with a small gift, cake, or token of gratitude for the role they play in the company.

• Build a “Wall of Fame.” Designate an area where you can post pictures of team members, thank-you notes from clients and customers, and clippings about the organization’s success. Celebrate your people whenever and wherever you can.

• Step out occasionally. Plan occasional group excursions to get everyone out of the office once in a while. Have a group lunch in a nice restaurant, hold an off-site meeting at a museum or botanical gardens, or take everyone on an impromptu trip to the movies.

Chamber Bucks

2011 has been a record year for the Twin Cities North Chamber of Commerce. With two months to go, we have already recruited more new members (77) then any other year during the previous six years. While we hope to exceed 100 new members in this year, that is definitely the goal in 2012.

We cannot do it alone though. Every single Chamber member has a friend, a business associate, a client, or a customer that would benefit by being a member of the Chamber, and would make the collective Chamber membership stronger through their business ethics, service and leadership. While we hope you have no reservations about promoting the Chamber as a group worthwhile of a referral of a friend, we also understand we need to ask and sometime entice you for the referral. To that end, we would like to introduce the ‘Chamber Bucks’ program. Anytime you assist the Chamber in signing up a new member, we will present you with $35 in ‘Chamber Bucks’ for your generosity. The ‘Chamber Bucks’ can be used for any Chamber event, sponsorship and even membership! We do need to exclude the outside advertising sales for the Directory and Magazine, but we’re confident you are so active in the Chamber that you will find someplace to use it.

What a deal! You make your Chamber stronger, introduce your friend to a group that benefits them, get recognition for you and your company, and make $35 to use towards your involvement with the Chamber.

Small Business Support

LEGAL CLINICS FOR SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS In August, the Chamber received a grant from Sam’s Club in Fridley to use for services that help small businesses. We have partnered with Bill Gschwind, business attorney with Alden Pearson, P.A., and Ted Landwehr, business attorney with Landwehr Law Offices to provide various knowledge and services for current and potential small business owners. Legal Clinic The clinic, run by Alden Pearson, P.A. will be open on the first Tuesday of each month beginning in January. It will begin with an open session on starting a business in Minnesota. Topics include:

Which legal entity is right for me?

What’s the difference between a strategic plan and a business plan?

What are the 6 systems every business needs to succeed?

Following the open session, private appointments will be available for up to 1/2 hour with small business owners. You do not need to attend the open session to schedule a private appointment. Appointment times are limited and will be filled on a first-come first-served basis; call the Chamber office to reserve a time. Walk-ins will only be taken if time allows.
