OUR MISSIONWe will provide a premier club

experience to all those who enter the gate. We are well trained

professionals committed to con-sistently delivering a memorable

experience through a service culture focused on anticipating

every detail.

MANAGEMENT REPORT

December may be the busi-est month of the year at the Club. Holiday parties crowd the calendar as always, and there are a number of special programs and events for the membership.

One of the most worthwhile is the Vol-unteer Fair on Tuesday, December 6, from 2:30-5:00 p.m. We initiated this program in March in an eff ort to expose members to worthwhile organizations in the community that may have needs that match the talents and availability of members.

Several members have volun-teered with one or more of these organizations during the past year and have passed on positive com-ments regarding their experiences. Th e Fair is an important oppor-tunity for the 25 organizations participating since all of them are feeling the economic pressure of declining fi nancial contributions and budgetary restrictions related to current economic conditions. Qualifi ed volunteers help them maintain their programs at the desired level.

Th ey all have interesting oppor-tunities. Be sure to stop by and see what they have to off er.

Another special program will be the holiday dinner December 19 featuring the Tucson Symphony Orchestra String Quartet. Th ere are still a few seats left , so if you have any expectations of attending this event, make you reservations now. I know this will sell out early. It will give you an opportunity to

enjoy the quartet’s performance prior to the dinner and during the intermission prior to dessert. It will also give you an opportunity to meet the musicians, who will sit

with the members during the dinner.

Just about everyone is familiar with our annual Holiday Mixer. Th is year it is scheduled for Tuesday, December 13. It is one of our most popular events and always sells out, so it

would be prudent to make your reservations early.

Th is is an exciting time of year at the Club. Stop by the lobby and pick up a copy of our “Save the Date” fl yer to see the events that are scheduled for December and beyond. Of one thing I am sure: there is something for everyone.

Finally, you may recall that last month I announced some of the honors achieved by our property. Among these was our being named a four-diamond resort by AAA for the sixteenth consecutive season. Th is is an amazing achievement.

Of the 60,000 properties assessed each year by AAA, fewer than 4 percent gain four-diamond status. And of all the four-diamond prop-erties in Arizona, only four have maintained that status longer than Ventana. Th is places us in an elite group of properties both in Ari-zona and the nation.

January 30, 2012January 30, 2012“Swing for the Cure” is an “all club” event open to both women and men. It will consist of a 9-Hole Golf Scramble and Tennis Round Robin, both starting at 10:00 a.m. Lunch, prizes, raffle and silent auction will follow the golf and tennis events. All proceeds will go to “Susan G Komen for the Cure”. Registration forms are also available in both the golf and tennis pro shops.

Because this event does encompass our whole membership, all Ventana Canyon members are encour-aged to help make this fundraiser a success by donating items for the raffle and silent auction. We need your contributions! Everyone’s help with donations and/or underwriting will make a difference in the lives touched by breast cancer. We hope the “giving” will bless you as it will others.

Please contact Judy Pease 749-5843, Carol Koretz 577-6122, or Kathy Tipler 529-4068 with dona-tions or any questions.

This event SOLD OUT last year! Register as soon as possible.

SA VE THE DATE, SUNDAY, JANUARY 29TH, 5:00-7:00 p.m. for the Pre-view Happy Hour for the Cure with Jay Faircloth and an opportunity to “buy it now” from the wonderful selection of auction items as well as to purchase raffle tickets early. Don’t forget your checks, cash and a big heart!

Volunteer, noun: a person who chooses freely to do or off er to do something with no promise of com-pensation.

Someone once said,” I believe the history of this country has several important threads: a belief in pro-viding equality of opportunity; the importance of education in getting there; that immigrants have brought much strength to this country; and we have always striven to be a nation that opened its arms to the oppressed in this world.” On December 6, we give you a unique opportunity to explore a multitude of charitable organizations all in one place – your Club, and to learn of the avenues which can greatly benefi t from your talents and knowl-edge.

September 2011: Joe O’BrianNominated by: Pete Reisinger

My golf car ran out of battery charge; night was approaching, coyotes howling. My dog and I were stuck along with my clubs. Joe answered the call to the Lodge, picked us up and deliv-ered us home...none of which is covered by his job description.

With the Holidays quickly approaching many of us fi nd our-selves in a frenzy, between making travel arrange-ments for ourselves and loved ones, holiday meal plans, and gift buying we fully neglect ourselves oft en running our bodies ragged. Th is is the time of year to celebrate our families and friends, but not to neglect ourselves in the pro-cess. Giving a gift is an action of showing our love so why not give the gift of relaxation for yourself and the one’s you love this holiday season?

As many of you know, massage helps to relax and unwind tight

muscles. What you may not know about are the amazing lasting eff ects that regular massage can provide for your mind and your body.

If you suff er with chronic pain from arthritis, massage can

provide relief from the swelling helping to aide in the movement of fl uid. Aft er surgery when a scar has almost healed, massage can help to break up adhesions from the scar tissue and increase range of motion in joints

that have suff ered past injuries. Massage also helps to lower blood pressure from stress, alleviates mi-graines, and helps to ease chronic back pain from repetitive work related actions. I have met so many members who have shared how massage has impacted their lives and has helped you in continuing doing the activities you love. Th ank you for letting us be apart of your care regiment, and we look for-ward to continuing our work well into the New Year!

Have a happy and safe holi-day season!

Sincerely,Breanne Soukup

OUR GAME CONTINUES TO GROW!! Our players are very complimentary about the food and the pricing. We are working hard to make it a very friendly, fun game but still keep within ACBL guidelines for sanctioned games.

As many of you know, we had classes on Thursday morning at the Club for several years. When we started the Thursday game, it took all our energy to do that so classes were moved to Finisterra. We are going to have intermediate classes at the Club again beginning on Wednesday, January 11th. Classes will be from 9:45 to 11:45. As

always, we will order lunch before we start class and it will be “on the table” when we break at 11:45. We are most impressed with our instructor, Joan Ryan, who started with us in September. She is ACBL Certi-fied and has a beautiful teaching style and fabulous handouts. We have been studying topics that the students requested. All the details are on our website: www.Tucson-CharityBridge.com

Our October Charity was Interfaith Community Services to whom we donated $615 – our largest monthly donation ever. We have now donated a total of $3,685 to local charities. Ronald McDonald House of Tucson is our charity for November. Hope you can come help us support them!!

Please e-mail Caron at [email protected] to make reservations so the Staff will have the appropriate number of playing tables set up. If you don’t have a

partner, we will find one for you. Please arrive at the game a little early so that the Staff can take your orders prior to the game starting promptly at 5:00. If you have any questions about Ventana Charity Bridge, please contact [email protected]

Hint for the Month: TCB has “state of the art” scoring boxes that are in use at all our games. There is a section in the box that displays all the contracts that have been played with that board. When you call out the results to all the players at your table, it is really easy for competitors at the other tables to hear the results which can make the game “unfair”. It is to your advantage to be very careful with your voice so that others can’t hear. It is also courteous to save the comments to your partner regarding play until you receive the hand records at the end of the game when everyone in the room has played that board.

WINTER DRESS

EXPECTATIONS EXPLAINED

AS WE ENTER THE RESORT SEASON AT THE CLUB, the Food and Bev-erage Department is reminding members that “Resort Dress Casual” attire will be expected in the dining room beginning at 5:00 p.m. daily.

In general this means shorts, work-out clothing, fl ip-fl ops and caps are inappropriate attire. However, dress jeans, dress sandals and collarless dress shirts are acceptable.

Alliance CEO George White explains that the rules are meant to apply to “everyone of all ages.” He commented further that out of respect for fellow club members and diners, cell phone use will not be allowed at any time in the dining room.

Dining room staff members are prepared to clarify any ques-tions or issues members may have about the winter policy

Tennis Tip – Scott Anders, USPTAAre you having trouble at the net putting away your volleys? Many

times players will come to me asking for help on their volleys when in fact their poor volleys are a symptom of the underlying problem, the approach shot. Th e approach shot is the “set up” that creates an opportunity for an easy volley, however, if you are not setting yourself up properly, you are probably having to return tougher shots than you should be.

Always keep in mind that the approach shot is the set up for the volley, not the winner. When coming to the net there are several strategies from keeping the ball low, moving your opponent off the court, or even going down the middle to force the opponent to create the angle. Regardless of which approach you hit, the objective is to get to the Ideal Volley Position (IVP) which is halfway between the service line and the net and follow your shot to the side of the court you placed the approach. Th is will help you bisect the angle of possible shots your opponent will hit.

Cure the problem, not the symptoms of the approach shot, and fi nd your game in good health!

If you have any questions, please John Koretz at 577-6122.

It appears our annual visit from Jack Frost has arrived. Here

are just a few reminders to help everyone better cope with and un-derstand frost delays. Frost on the turf-grass plant is similar to an

eggshell – once you break it you can’t put it back together. It is extremely important to the long-term health of the grass that we all use good judgment when dealing with frost. It is always our goal to minimize the frost delay without causing any long-term dam-age to the golf courses.

Annual rainfall as of 11/18/11 is at 7.63”.

Please keep in mind the tempera-tures that the news reports are taken at the airport and due to our higher elevation we typically experience morning lows that can be 5 degrees cooler than those temperatures that are reported on the news. So, any-time the news reports morning lows around 40 degrees we have a chance of getting frost on the golf courses.

Also, when comparing our frost delays to other area courses it is im-portant to keep in mind that many facilities change their winter tee times to 8am compared to our fi rst tee time of 7:30 a.m. Th is automati-cally reduces their delay by 30 min-utes when compared to our delay.

We typically experience ap-

proximately 45 – 50 frost delays each season.

To check on the status of a frost delay you may check the club web-site or call the golf shop.

Please remember to repair your ballmarks and fi ll your divots. Golf carts will be permitted to access the fairways using the 90 degree cart rule eff ective Th ursday, November 24th. Please avoid high traffi c areas and keep carts BEHIND cart direc-tional signs in the approach.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Wally Dowe (Director of Golf Course Mainte-nance) at 577-4013 or ventanacan-yon1@qwestoffi ce.net

Private Carts

The golf staff will be contact-ing Members with private carts to schedule their annual cart inspec-tion. Please keep in mind that before a private cart is allowed on the golf course Members are required to have a signed private cart agreement on fi le, the cart must pass inspection and the Member must pay an annual trail fee. In the event that your private cart is being serviced and there is a need to take a private cart home please notify the golf shop before leaving the club so that all carts can be accounted for prior to closing.

Golf Cart Safety Reminder

The top priority of the staff at Ventana Canyon is the safety of our Members and guests while on the golf course. Golf cart safety is a very important aspect of this objec-tive. Th e two tunnels on the Canyon course create an area of concern. Due to the speed of some private carts it is imperative that the operator be cau-tious when approaching and leaving a tunnel. Vehicles may be traveling in the reverse direction and all vehicles should be prepared to stop in any congested area of the course.

Pace of Play and How to Catch-up

Maintaining the appropriate pace of play enhances the golf experi-ence for all Members and guests. It is the responsibility of all Members to maintain the standard of four hours and fi ft een minutes for a foursome to complete 18 holes. If you fall behind the group in front or behind the tar-geted pace of play the following ideas may assist you in increasing your speed of play and regain your position

on the golf course:

Play Ready Golf, always being • aware of your playing partners safetyDecide on club selection and • strategy while others are play-ing, be prepared to play your shot when it is your turnOn the green stand behind your • ball and line up your putt while other are puttingWhen possible, fi nish putting out • and gather clubs and the fl ag stick for the groupWhen you have all holed out im-• mediately vacate the green, mark your scorecard at the next tee

Th e Player Assistants are on the golf course to help all players enjoy their round, which includes maintaining the speed of play. Please follow their advice and direction to help maintain a quality experience for everyone.

W.G.A.Now that the Holiday season is with us, there

are several important events happening with the WGA. Our Member/Guest event and luncheon will be Decem-ber 1st, and has been organized by Sharon Baker and Gerda Unger.

On December 7th at 3:00 pm, Th e WGA will be host-ing another on-course rules workshop We would like everyone to meet at the Club staging area at 3:00. Th is workshop is open to all golf members with no fee.

Please take this opportunity to learn and review the common rules of golf to avoid penalties and give your-self an advantage! Th is course is back by popular de-mand with the Ventana WGA hosting this practical and fun on-course review key golf rules. Conducted by our pro shop staff and lead by golf professional Jason Lucas, you will have the chance to see and experience golf situ-ations on the course and learn how to apply the rules of golf to that situation. Golfers who attended last year's workshop gained practical experience and enjoyed lots of laughs as well. Th e workshop is designed for golfers who are new to the rules as well as those familiar with the rules of golf. Come out and expand your under-standing while enjoying the company of other members.

Marie Miyashiro, our Rules Chairman, has organized this event with Jason. She is also putting more "fun" into learning more about rules by holding WGA Rules and

Etiquette Quiz for our Holiday luncheon. Last month's quiz was won by Toni McWilliams, a fairly new member to the WGA, who will receive, what else, a new Rules Book!

Last but not certainly least, is our Holiday luncheon on December 15th. We will have an 8:00 a.m. shotgun in a Scramble format. Th is will also be a time when you can pick your own foursome, or talk with Jason and he will place you in a foursome. Please do not forget to sign up on Chelsea for this luncheon and event. In addition, we would also like to welcome any previous members of the WGA to join us for lunch, please RSVP with Jason at least 48-hours in advance. It will be a wonderful opportunity to visit with friends and previous playing partners. It will help a lot to spread the word if current members would let previous members we would love to have them join us. At this luncheon we will fol-low the traditional contributions to a worthy charity in the Tucson area. Please come with your contributions in cash or check form if you wish to participate. Th e Board will be meeting to select a very important cause in the Tucson area.

Happy Holidays to all!!!!

M.G.A.OCTOBER EVENT:

Both courses were officially open on Saturday, October 29, and that was also the day of the annual MGA Wally’s Revenge event. Four-man teams were selected, by handicap. Each team was comprised of a compilation of A, B, C and D handicap-level players. Th e format was a basic Scramble with teams recording their gross score on each hole.

Over 80 players participated and reported that the for-mat was not only fun and challenging but was especially popular because so many members enjoyed meeting other members that they had not encountered before.

Wally’s Revenge simply means that Wally Dowe, Golf Course Superintendent, sets up an extremely tough chal-lenge. Pins are both tough to access and tough to putt to.

Th at being said, there were some pretty impressive re-sults:

1st Place - Team Score 63 (Won scorecard playoff ): Joe Pease, Mike Schwanenberger, Lex Sears, Tony Trantas

2nd Place - Team Score 63: Rich Bergen, Stuart Kuper, Jim Mackenzie, Brian Walker

3rd Place - Team Score 64: Gene Ferretti, Stu Johnson, Phil Lyons, Scott Plecs

POOL NEWSWINTER IS NEARLY HERE and so are the cooler days and nights. At 9:00 p.m. each night the pool will be locked and the covers will be put across the entire pool. Please do not stay in the pool past this time. The covers will be removed by 6:00 a.m. each day. The pool will not be open prior to 6:00 a.m., and no one will be allowed in the pool until the covers have been removed. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but it keeps the pool toasty warm and saves the Club an incredible amount of money in heating costs.

FITNESS SCHEDULE FOR DECEMBER 2011

Classes are subject to change. Please call Margery at extension 326 for weekly updated schedules.

Stay ahead of the holiday eating, call Margery at 577-1400, ext. 326 to begin a fi tness program and counteract those holiday pounds!

NOT EASY TO DO OVER THE HOLIDAY season, but here are ten helpful tips.

Eat a small snack ( low fat 1. cottage cheese or a small bowl of high-fi ber cereal, both are fi lling) before you go to your holiday party. If you arrive famished everything will look amazing! Once at the party, choose one protein, one starch and one vegetable. Appetizers only? Choose your two favor-ites.Wait twenty minutes before go-2. ing back to the food line. The break will give your brain time to decide if you’re truly still hungry.Think small - small plates, 3. small forks, small bites! Por-tion control will keep you from shoveling food in without thinking. Start with a small plate, again add one half veg-etables, one quarter protein and one quarter starch. There will be less room on your plate to add the fattening foods you

adore. When adding these fattening foods, keep it to an amount that you can eat in two normal-sized bites. Letting yourself enjoy a small “treat” can actually turn off the crav-ing, try to stick with this two-bite strategy. The worst thing you can do is 4. never eat what you crave! Give in to your cravings sparingly, use the two-bite rule. Let others hit the food line 5. before you, conversation is calorie-free!Step away from the table! If 6. you don’t put your choices on a plate, you have no idea how much you are really eating. Be a food snob! Don’t waste precious calories on blase fare. Pick the special items, take a small amount and savor every bite!Pace yourself. Take your cue 7. from the slowest eater at the table.Drink slimmer. Alcohol is a 8. double whammy during the holidays. It tends to weaken

your resistance when it comes to eating and the calories in drinks add up rapidly. Drink out of a slender glass and sip rather than guzzle!Cure portion distortion. A study 9. in the journal of clinical nutri-tion shows that people who shrink their portions by 25% slashed 250 calories per day-enough to help them lose a half a pound a week. Put less on your plate! Shrink your plates! Try eating on smaller side plates.Get to know recommended 10. serving sizes for your favorites. A serving of fi sh (3 ounces) should be the size of a check-book, a serving of steak should look like a deck of cards. Think of meat and pasta as side dishes. After meal rituals such as brushing your teeth, chew-ing a piece of sugarless gum or sipping a hot drink like tea or sugarless cocoa can be cues to stop eating.
