• The Guinness World Book of Records cites the world’s largest snowflake ever recorded as one that fell in Fort Keogh, Montana in January of 1887. This giant was 15 inches (38 cm) wide and 8 inches (20 cm) thick. • Although you might think every big snowstorm is a blizzard, the National Weather Service has a specific definition of one. The storm must contain “large amounts of snow or blowing snow, with winds in excess of 35 mph (56 km/hr) and visibilities of less than _ mile (.4 km) for at least three hours.” • Those folks who are afraid of snow are called chionophobics. Their greatest fear is of being snowbound or stranded. A forecast of a winter storm can bring on cold sweats, racing heartbeat, and panic attacks. • The wind chill factor is the temperature felt on exposed skin due to wind. The wind chill index was developed by two Antarctic explorers in the 1940s, who experimented with how fast water froze in differing temps and wind speeds. This was then compared with the rate that the body loses heat. If the temperature is 0° F (-18° C) and the wind is blowing 30 mph (48 km/hr), it will feel like the temperature is -26° F (-32° C). Skin exposed to 0° F and only 15 mph (24 km/hr) will experience a wind chill of -19° F (-28° C) can freeze in as little as 30 minutes. • Hypothermia is a very real danger in many parts of the country this time of year. This condition occurs when the body’s temperature drops below 95° F (35° C). As the temperature decreases, the body automatically directs blood away from the skin, increasing flow to the vital organs. Since the heart and brain are the most sensitive to cold, a slowdown occurs in their electrical activity. Thinking and reasoning are affected, and the person has the desire to sleep as delirium sets in. When the body’s

temperature reaches about 82° F (28° C), the heart rate substantially slows down, and if the temperature reaches 68° F (20° C) brain function stops. About half of all hypothermia deaths are people over 60 years old, with 75% of these occurring in men. • It’s been a long time since the record for a single day’s snowfall was set in the United States. Back in December of 1913, Georgetown, Colorado received 63 inches (1.6 meters) in one day. Canada’s record is much newer – 57 inches (1.45 meters) fell in Tahtsa Lake West, British Columbia in 1999. January of 1911 was a record-setting month in Tamarack, California – 390 inches (9.9 meters) of snow in a single month! Valdez, Alaska is the snowiest place in the U.S., averaging 326 inches (8.3 meters) a year.• Bethel, Maine’s claim to fame is tall snow creatures! In 1999, the community planned for five months and labored 15 days to create Angus, a 113’ 7” (34.63 meter) tall snowman, the world’s tallest, overtaking the previous record set by the citizens of Yamagata, Japan, of 96’ 7”. Nine years later, Bethel rivaled their own record with the world’s tallest snow woman, a 122’ 1” (37 meters) creation named Olympia. Olympia sported eyelashes made from skis and lips fashioned from bright red painted tires. Her arms were crafted from pine trees. • Canadians are experts at making snow angels. In 2004, students, parents, and teachers from 60 schools in the London, Ontario district hit the ground to create 15,851 snow angels simultaneously. In 2011, 22,022 folks in 130 separate locations in Nova Scotia produced the most angels in multiple locations. • Chamonix, France hosted the first Winter Olympics for 11 days in early 1924. Sixteen nations sent a total of 258 athletes to “The International Winter Sports Week” to participate in 16 different events. Finland and Norway took the majority of the 43 medals,

Norway with 17 and Finland, 11. The United States took home four medals, and Canada took home one, the gold for hockey, the first of a streak. Out of the first seven Olympic winter games, Canada took the gold medal in hockey six times. • Squaw Valley, California was the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics, and the skiers were more than a little nervous as the competition approached. The reason? There was no snow! A local Native American tribe, the Piute, were recruited to do a “snow dance,” and a miraculous storm produced the snow needed to save the Games. • More than 150 people are killed in the world’s avalanches each year. Although many are small slides of dry powdery snow that don’t create much damage, when large slabs of snow loosen from a mountainside, they can advance down a slope at speeds of 80 mph (130 km/hr) within five seconds. About 93% of those caught in an avalanche can survive if rescued within 15 minutes. Just 30 minutes later, that survival rate drops to 20%-30%. After two hours, the rate is almost nil. ■

lb. (5.4-kg) rubber ball through a hoop mounted high on the wall, 23 feet (7 meters) above the ground. Archaeologists believe the losers were put to death.• Nearly everyone has heard the Mayan prophecy of the end of the world occurring in December of 2012. The prediction is that the great warrior serpent Kukulkan will rise from the ground under the ball court and end the world on the 22nd of the month. • Very large gatherings were held at the Temple of the Warriors, an enormous complex with a large stepped pyramid, four platforms, and 200 carved columns. Thousands of artifacts have been recovered from the area, including gold, carved jade, pottery, obsidian, rubber, flint, and human skeletons. • It’s evident that human sacrifices were part of the culture. Chichen Itza, which translates “mouth of the well,” was settled around two wells, one a sacred place, and the other for everyday use. Large quantities of bones and ceremonial objects have been recovered from the sacred well during excavation. • About 1.2 million tourists visit Chichen Itza every year. Until 2006, visitors were allowed to walk through the buildings’ ruins and climb the pyramids. However, after a woman fell to her death from El Castillo that year, people are no longer permitted on the structures. ■

FAMOUS LANDMARKS OF THE WORLD:

CHICHEN ITZA Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is home to the ancient ruins of the most famous Mayan city, Chichen Itza. Here are some enlightening facts about this site, named as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. • One of the largest Mayan cities, Chichen Itza covered an area of at least 1.9 square miles (5 sq. km). It was an active urban center of the Mayan empire from 750 to 1200 A.D.• The ancient Mayan civilization displayed brilliant mathematical and astronomical skills. They were keen observers of the sun, moon, planets, and stars, even predicting solar eclipses from their state-of-the-art observatory, El Caracol, which still stands at the site today. • The most familiar structure at Chichen Itza is the Kukulkan Pyramid, also known as El Castillo. This 98-foot (30-m) tall ceremonial temple is a specimen of this civilization’s development of the 365-day calendar. It has 365 steps rising to the top, with each of its four sides containing 91 steps and the top platform making the 365th. Enormous sculptures of a serpents’ heads are at the base of the pyramid on the northern staircase, the principal sacred path to the top. The temple is geographically positioned so that twice a year, on the spring and autumn equinoxes, at sunset, a shadow falls on the pyramid that makes it appear that the serpent Kukulkan is making its way down the stairway. Seven interlocking triangles form a serrated line that resembles the serpent’s tail. • El Castillo was not the first temple to occupy the site. Built sometime between 1000 and 1200 A.D., it was constructed on the foundation of previous temples. Archaeological digs in the 1930s uncovered another staircase under the north side of the pyramid, and continuing the dig, found another temple buried below. • Near the pyramid is a large ball court, 554 feet (168 meters) long and 231 feet (70 meters) wide. It was here that Mayan men played pok ta pok, a game in which players hit or threw a 12-

Q: My Thursday nights just aren't the same without "Community." When will the show return, and will it be on Fridays, which is what I heard last? -- David S., via e-mail

A: NBC recently announced that "Community" -- which stars Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Donald Glover and Chevy Chase -- has ping-ponged back to its original Thursday night at 8/7c time slot, beginning Feb. 7. "Community" takes the place of "30 Rock," which will have concluded its final season by then. We'll both have to wait patiently for 13 more episodes of one of the best, and most underrated, comedies on television today.

Q: On your recommendation, I watched Bill Pullman in Scott Turrow's "Innocent," which carried on the story of "Presumed Innocent" main character Rusty Sabich 20 years later, where he is accused of murdering his wife. I absolutely loved it, and it got me to thinking that in my opinion, Bill Pullman is underutilized in Hollywood. Can you tell me what I can see him in next? -- Virginia F. in Connecticut

A: Beginning Thursday, Jan. 10, at 9:30/8:30c, Bill does a 180 from his "Innocent" role to star as the president of the United States in the NBC comedy "1600 Penn." The series was co-created by Jason Winder, director for "Modern Family," so I can only hope that some of that comic genius carries over to this new series. And Bill is no stranger to being

the POTUS (see: "Independence Day"), nor is he averse to being funny. In fact, when I spoke with the star of the dark comedy "Mr. Wrong" earlier this year, he told me he was eager to get back into comedy if he got the right script.

Q: My roommate told me that there is going to be a new "Battlestar Galactica" movie on the Syfy channel. Is that true? If so, when?

-- Harold W., Boston

A: "Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome" is set to debut this March on Syfy, and stars Luke Pasqualino and Ben Cotton. According to reps for Syfy, the film "takes place in the midst of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, the sentient robotic Cylons, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, gifted fighter pilot William Adama (Pasqualino), finds himself assigned to one of the most powerful battlestars in the Colonial fleet: the Galactica.Full of ambition and hungry for action, Adama quickly finds himself at odds with his co-pilot, the battle-weary officer Coker (Cotton)." The film already is airing in weekly seven-to-10-minute segments on the Machinima Prime YouTube channel for those who can't wait until March, as long as you don't mind short segments with a week between airings.

Q: I can't stand the waiting! When will "Smash" be back? --- Eric P., via e-mail

A: You'll have to wait just a little bit longer. The musical melodrama returns to NBC on Feb. 5.

Dear Theresa: As an active senior how do I avoid the risks of the heat in the summer without losing my independence?Answer: The summer is an amazing time especialy in Michigan. All winter long we yearn for the outdoors, the sunshine, and the beautiful summer warmth. The only catch to this is as seniors the heat can be very dangerous if we are not careful, and preparred. According to the CDC seniors are more at risk for for heat related illnesses because of the following:- Senior people do not adjust as well as younger people to the sudden change in temperature.- Seniors are more likely to have a chronic medical condition that is easily exacerbated by heat.- Seniors are mor likely to take prescription medication that can sometimes impair the body's ability to regulate its

temperature. The following are some tips that can help seniors keep their independence and activity and at the same time "beat the heat".- Try to plan activities early in the morning or in the early evening when the heat is not so oppressive.- Move your exercises indoors. Condsider the treadmill, or mall walking instead of road walking or neighborhood walking. If available in your area water aerobics are a fun and exciting change of pace in your exercise routine.- Drink plenty of fluids (non alcoholic, and caffeine free). Water is always a great choice but sports drinks or anything with electrolytes will help immensely.- Be aware of signs of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke, and if you are starting to feel very thirsty, confused, irritable, and or dizzy seek shelter from the heat in an air conditioned environment out of the sun as soon as possible.Get out and enjoy the summer, just make sure you plan and prepare for all the glorious sunshine, and heat!!

Periodontist | Dr. Steve WolfDr. Steve Wolf has been creating Smiles in the Metro Detroit for many years. His practice specializes in prevention and treatment of gum disease including cosmetic procedures to esthetically enhance your smile as well as dental implants that can replace single or multiple missing teeth.

Ask Your Periodontist: Dr. Steve WolfDear Dr. Wolf: My husband’s dentist said he needed to remove his upper teeth and make him a denture. We want to be cautious is this really the best choice?

-- Kim S. Northville, MI

I just had this same conversation with a patient. Sometimes infection of the gums, bone and teeth can be so severe that teeth must be removed. A denture, which is a custom fit plate adapted to the jaw, is the most economical replacement for missing teeth. However, as soon as her husband’s teeth are removed, his jaw would start shrinking, up to 25% in the first year and would continue over his life. Because of this his denture will get loose, not fit well and become uncomfortable. I asked her if they considered dental implants and she said they were too expensive. I then explained how just a few dental implants could be affordable. Strategically placing them in key support areas, would protect the jaw bone, secure the denture and provide support for years to come. If you know someone who is faced with tooth loss let them know they we can help.

Dear Dr. Donohue: Three or four months ago, the ring finger on my right hand started making popping noises when I bent it. Now it’s still doing that, and it catches in a bent position from time to time. I work as a carpenter, and I can’t afford to take time off. What do you think this is? --R.B.

Answer: My guess is trigger finger. The tendons that bend the fingers travel from the forearm into the palm and then onto each finger and the thumb. On their way to the fingers, a sheath of tough tissue encircles them. Repetitive movements of the fingers irritate the protective tendon sheaths, and they swell. The swelling squeezes the tendon, and the popping noise you hear is the tendon freeing itself from its swollen sheath. That snapping noise sounds like the noise heard when cocking a gun’s trigger. As time goes by, the finger might become locked for some time in the bent position. You don’t want to hear this, but rest is essential to permit the tendon to move smoothly. If you must work, padded gloves afford some protection for the finger. Gripping a tool like a hammer is particularly hard on the tendon and its sheath. Tools with a larger-than-normal handle are less of a problem. The best protection is wearing a metal splint so that the finger can’t move.Your doctor can give you a cortisone injection into the problem area, and that often reduces the swelling quickly. You must rest your finger after the injection for at least three days.If two injections fail to free the finger, then you need to consult an orthopedic surgeon for an opinion on surgical release of the tendon.Dear Dr. Donohue: This past summer, I got the shock of my life at a family get-together. My cousin, whom I hadn’t seen in 10 years, has

Trigger Finger Not a Cowboy DisorderBy Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

bulging eyes. Her mother -- my aunt -- told me it was due to a thyroid problem. I’d never heard of a thyroid problem affecting the eyes. Does it? -- G.D.

Answer: It can. An overactive thyroid gland can lead to deposits of material in the eye sockets, which causes the eyes to protrude. There are treatments for this complication of hyperthyroidism. I’m sure this cousin is under the care of a thyroid specialist and an ophthalmologist. The booklet on thyroid disorders explains the many conditions arising from a malfunctioning gland. To order a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 401W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.Dear Dr. Donohue: Can hair grow on the lips if a person shaves very close to the upper and lower lips? Some informed individuals say no. -- L.G.

Answer: Never in my life have I seen hair on people’s lips. Lips have no hair follicles. You even could shave the lips if you felt so inclined (but please don’t try this), and hair would not grow on them. If you have evidence to the contrary, let me know.

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Air Travel Without the Baggage

Air travel isn’t much fun anymore, and getting through the airport is the worst of it. Between the crowds, the TSA rules and dragging heavy luggage, some of us just want to stay home and not bother. There is a way, however, to take care of at least one of the problems with air travel: send your luggage early.UPS, FedEx and DHL all will pick up your luggage at your home and ship it to your destination for you. UPS, for example, has specially designed boxes to hold your

suitcases. As with anything else, there are both plusses and minuses to using this service. The benefits:--No standing in line only to be told that your bag is overweight and will cost even more.--No lost bags at the airport.--No chance of thieving airport personal going through your suitcases and stealing things or at least rummaging around.--Less chance of damage to your bags.--No wasted time at baggage claim and then pushing through the crowd to pull your luggage off a moving carousel.--No wrestling with luggage through the airport or onto the hotel bus or into your rental car.The downside:--The cost. It can be expensive to use a service to get your luggage to your destination so it’s there when you arrive. But it can be a life (or back) saver if dealing with luggage in crowded airports is a hassle for you.

Hint: Have your bag shipped days in advance. That way you’re not paying overnight shipping costs. Also, don’t bother using a “luggage shipper.” They use the same DHL, FedEx or UPS services, but they add on their own handling fees.

If you're in an area that frequently loses power for long periods, a generator can help keep a few of your appliances going, such as refrigerator and freezer, thereby saving the cost of replacing all your food. If you lose power now and then, but only for a short time, a generator might not be cost effective -- unless you need it for heat.Outdoor grill with propane tank: When the power goes out, grills are handy not only to cook meat before it goes bad, but to heat pots of water for tea, coffee, instant oatmeal and other prepared foods like soup or macaroni and cheese. One benefit of propane is that you can instantly turn it off and not have wood or briquettes still hot if the wind blows.A word about candles: Don't. How much coverage do you need?-- Pauline B., Troy, MI

Every state sets a minimum coverage level, in Michigan it is $20000 for the first person injured, /$40000 per accident and $10,000 for damage of physical property outside the state. Selecting more than the minimum coverage would increase your cost now but potentially give you more protection in case of an accident. Since it's impossible to know the most you'd have to pay if you were to cause an accident that resulted in bodily injury or property damage, be sure to take some time and consider whether you'd be able to afford any damages that exceed your insurance coverage. The higher your limits, the more likely it is that we'll be able to pay all of the damages for you. Limits higher than the state minimum might be the best choice for you.

Dear Robert: What is a diamond certification, and is it important?

-- Larry B., Livonia, MI

Answer: Just like any sizable purchase you wouldn’t with out the all the proper documentation, you should not by a diamond without a reliable diamond certificate from a reputable independent lab. All those Four C’s—color, clarity, cut, and carat—need to be evaluated by an extremely experienced and independent professional so that you are purchasing the diamond you think you are purchasing. The certification is like the diamond’s birth certificate—it tells the unique story of your stone’s characteristics, qualities and flaws. Although many labs certify diamonds, the most reliable are the GIA, the world’s largest lab, and the AGS.

Answer: What you are considering doing is known as a “Wash Sale” in the tax code. If you were to buy the same security back within 30 days of the sale the loss would be disallowed and it would be applied to the repurchase. Otherwise, your strategy will work if you’re willing to wait 31 days before buying it back.

Dear Kevin, I currently have a loss on one of my stock investments. I like the company and have faith in it longer term as an investment, but it seems it would be prudent to sell it before the end of the year to recognize the loss for tax purposes. Is there any reason why I shouldn’t sell it and then just buy it right back?

Can filing bankruptcy stop foreclosure of my home?

-- Tom K.., Walled Lake, MI

Answer: Yes and no. The filing of a bankruptcy case automatically stops or "stays" any collection attempts by a creditor for a debt that arose prior to the commencement of the case, including foreclosure proceedings and lawsuits. However, creditors can request that the bankruptcy court grant them "relief from the stay" to continue to pursue foreclosure. If your house had already gone to foreclosure sale prior to the commencement of your case, a bankruptcy case cannot "undo" a properly conducted foreclosure sale. If your house has not yet been sold at a foreclosure sale, a bankruptcy case can stop the sale from occurring, and may give you many more options to save it.

Dear Rick: We have been looking at cabinets and are confused about the products that the cabinets are made of, some boast about all wood cabinets and others say that it doesn’t matter. Who do we believe? -- Lorraine T., Northville, MI

Answer: There are many different materials used in the manufacturing of cabinetry. The cabinet box construction options are typically wood, partical board , fiber board and melamine. When cabinets are referred to as “all wood” it usually means plywood boxes although you can fine cabinets made of solid wood. Lower end cabinets or “stock cabinets” are usually a particle board or chip board. Fiberboard is technically a particle board but has much higher manufacturing standards and is also used in higher end furniture manufacturing. Melamine is also a particle board product that has been laminated with a vinyl layer to give it its actual look. Now, what is best? There is no easy answer to that question. My preference is the fiberboard, it is extremely hard and durable. It doesn’t have any voids in it that can affect the veneers that give the cabinet its final appearance. If you are using frameless cabinets stability of the product is paramount and fiberboard fits the need with outstanding results. My second choice would be plywood. It is lighter in weight so it makes it a little easier to install the cabinets but it can absorb moisture especially if the cabinet is trimmed. That can cause warping or a deflection in the cabinet making it difficult to install or even cause early failure depending on the amount of moisture. The particle board/chip board cabinets quite often have a vinyl coating to them that can end up peeling off. The other part of “all wood” cabinets are the doors. Most semi-custom and custom cabinets have solid wood doors. Some stock cabinets are also made of wood. Another type of door can be a medium density fiberboard (MDF). This product is easy to machine and then is covered either with a wood veneer, a heat wrapped vinyl or a sprayed on plastic coating. The veneers and the vinyls are usually in the lower end cabinets and the plastic spray coating is usually in the upper lines of cabinets. The spray coating is a more contemporary look and can be anywhere from a matte finish to a very shiny finish.

We Don’t Contract Our Work!Expert Installation by our Seasoned

Professional Staff!

Dear Marty: Do you install windows all year long? -- Greg C., Novi, MI

Answer: Yes, installation of windows is possible in any season. There are advantages in each season for the installation crew as well as the homeowner. Extreme heat and cold will slow down production and can draw attention to safety details. Installation of any job can be postponed anytime of the year for reasons such as high winds or rain or snow. A reputable window company will not open our home to such elements.Overall the installation is isolated to certain rooms at one time. The window opening is onl exposed for a short time before the new window is set in the opening. This practice is simple and efficient anytime of the year. Many people do not think companies install in the winter. The winter is traditionally the "Off Season" You may be in for discounted pricing for winter installations.Northville Lumber Company, a family-owned business, has been serving the Metro Detroit area since 1845. How to solve attic ventilation problems?Answer: One of the leading problems of improper attic ventilation is insufficient or incorrectly installed intake ventilation. One new product on the market to solve this problem is Air Vent The EdgeTM Vent. The EdgeTM Vent works well with existing roof designs because it can be installed with roofs that currently have no overhang. Once installed this product can help to eliminate ice dams and improve temperature flow in the upper level of homes which in return can lower heating bills.

What material can gutters be made from?-- Dean C., Plymouth, MI

There are four types of materials being used to manufacture gutters today. PVC vinyl, Steel, Aluminum and Copper. PVC or plastic gutters come in 10’ sections that have to be installed with gaskets or seams every 10 feet. These are prone to leaks at those unions. Steel gutters, although the strongest material, are susceptible to rust from moisture causing the gutter to fail within 20 years. Copper gutters are very durable and meant to last 100 years. Due to its longevity and the cost of material, it is an expensive system to install. Lastly, there is aluminum. They will not rust and are twice as thick as steel gutters. Aluminum is generally the best chose for most houses.

Homestead Exemption ChangesDear Robert : I heard there were some changes in Homestead Exemption filings this year. What exactly happened? --Dan B., Livonia, MI

Answer: According to my sources at the Michigan Association of Realtors, On May 30, 2012, Governor Rick Snyder signed Senate Bill 349 into law. Sponsored by Senator Dave Hildenbrand (R-Lowell) this new law created two Principal Residence Exemption (PRE) filing dates; one on June 1st, and the other on November 1st. Additionally, this legislation allows bank-owned properties to retain their PRE so that buyers can qualify at the lower rate of taxation. The legislation, which took effect this year, moved the former May 1st PRE filing deadline to June 1st of this year. So now, if a homebuyer purchases a Principal Residence and closes on or before June 1st, they can take advantage of a significant tax break by filing for a Principal Residence Exemption. If, however, they close AFTER June 1, they have the NEW OPPORTUNITY of filing on November 1st. This allows for tax relief in those communities that still collect a portion, if not all of their non-homestead mills, on the December tax bill. There are many additional changes affecting homestead taxes and savings on purchases of foreclosed properties also! For the professional assistance you deserve, please call us TODAY!

Dear James: How long does an Exterior paint job last in our local area? -- Alan B., Lathrup Village, MI

Answer: That is a question I am always asked and I have a good answer for that. There are a few things it depends on. First, how much do you let your home go before you think its time? Second, it depends on who does the painting. I would say if you get a high quality paint job you will start to see the paint fading in about 5 years on the side the sun hits on your house all day. About 10 percent of my customers paint then. The majority of my customers would be in about the 8 year mark. The paint at this point has shown its fading around the home and caulking in areas have starting opening up in spots for water to get behind. Sometimes the house has other problems that does cause damage to the paint job earlier on, but that would be caused by something else. What gives most of my customers the confidence they need to work on their home is that I can show them homes I have done over 5 years ago and, with the help of my great customers, welcoming me to use them as a referral anytime.

Dear Varsity Lincoln: I need help trying to sync my phone to my new MKS? Answer: Pairing your phone to your new vehicle has become even easier than ever with the newly updated versions of the SYNC system. Original versions required customers to type a 6-digit PIN into their phone to pair their Bluetooth© device with SYNC. To help alleviate this, the pairing process is much easier and even more automatic. The PIN is now automatically pushed to the phone and customers simply confirm that the 6-digit PIN on the touch screen matches the 6-digit on their phone. No more typing. Here are the complete phone pairing instructions: 1. Make sure that your vehicle is in (P) Park and both your ignition and radio are turned on. 2. Touch Add Phone in the upper-left corner of the touch screen (highlighted in Yellow). Find SYNC appears o the screen, and instructs you to begin the pairing process from your device. 3. Make sure that Bluetooth is se to ON and your mobile phone is in the proper mode:

• Search for Devices on your mobile phone until your phone finds SYNC• Then, select SYNC and the 6-digit PIN will appear on your device• Note: If you are prompted to enter a PIN on your device, it does not support Secure Simple Pairing. To pair, enter the PIN displayed on the touch screen, Skip Step 4.

4. When prompted on your phone’s display, confirm that the PIN provided by Sync matches the PIN displayed on your mobile phone. 5. The display will indicate when the pairing is successful.

Puppy Thinks Shoes Are Chew ToysBy Sam Mazzotta

Dear Paw's Corner: Help! Our new puppy, "Elwood," is getting into everything, chewing up my kids' shoes and tearing the stuffing out of stuffed animals. Any advice on getting him to stop? -- Jessica G., via email

Dear Jessica: Getting a puppy to completely stop exploring and chewing is a job that requires time and patience. You also need to reconfigure your house to keep Elwood safe. If he ingests a shard of plastic or some other indigestible item, a poisonous plant or medicines from lower bathroom cabinets, he could be in serious danger.First, pet proof the house. Invest in toddler safety gates (if you don't already have some) to limit Elwood to parts of the house where he's less likely to find shoes, toys and other objects. In that gated-off area, remove kids' toys, clothing, stuffed animals and other chewable objects. Lift potted plants out of his reach (the leaves of many houseplants are poisonous to pets). Make sure Elwood has access to his pet bed and to

appropriate chew toys, and check on him frequently. Puppies should not be left alone for long periods of time, for many reasons. Next, get that basic obedience training regime going. Grab a book or three on dog training, all of which will cover important basic commands like "sit," "stay," "come" and "heel." Spend at least 30 minutes every day working with Elwood, in addition to twice-daily walks and generous amounts of playtime. Chewing behavior is very common in puppies, but tends to diminish as they mature. If he continues to destroy everything in sight, talk to his veterinarian or try a group dog-training class. Anxiety or other issues can be at the root of long-term chewing problems.Send your questions or tips to [email protected], or write to Paw's Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O.
