across a number of divisions. Young Coalcliff surfer Billie Melinz, took out 1st place in the under 13 years division, 3rd in the 16 years division and 5th in the open division. She was joined by 16 year old April Boughton (main image) who took out 5th in the under 20 division against some strong competition and older surfers.

Billie said of the conditions on the day “It was a bit choppy and the waves were only about two foot, it was really hard to find an average wave to turn on.” Billie said she sees a lot of the same faces at the different events, “All the girls are really good, in competition surfing it all comes down to wave selection”.

In the ‘slightly older’ category, Stanwell Park resident and surf instructor Fiona Hunt did us proud, taking out 3rd in the over 35 years division. Fiona and husband Peter run Essential Surf & Skate in Helensburgh, and also provides April, Billie and a number of other talented young surfers with sponsorship and mentoring.

April’s mum Kylie Boughton said “The parents really appreciate the support from Pete and Fiona, their approach is simple and flexible, and all they ask in return is time spent catching waves and their brand’s stickers in strategic spots”.

“We try to do our bit for the kids” said Fiona “it’s a genuine grass roots level of sponsorship. If we see a kid with potential and the focus that is needed to do well, we provide a platform for them to get noticed – often by big sponsors.” Fiona noted that April was one of those kids and had progressed in a relatively short time, possessing the ‘focus’ needed.

The next competition for the younger girls will be the regional and state titles in early 2013.

By Angela FagerströmLess than a month after the Illawarra Public

Health Unit (IPHU) announced they were to assemble an expert advisory panel to consider any evidence of an unexpected number of cancer cases in Helensburgh, the panel released a summary of its findings – putting them down to “chance”.

The panel’s study and the speed with which it reached a finding, has done little to quell concerns in the Helensburgh community.

Helensburgh residents Stuart and Diane Young are parents to nine year old Burkitt’s lymphoma patient Matthew Young. They were contacted by a local general practitioner seeking data (for the IPHU) on the childhood cancer cases known to them on November 21. The Illawarra Public Health Unit’s expert panel released a summary of its findings the very next day, or around 18 hours after the contact with the local GP.

Expert Cancer Panel Satisfied With FindingsPerplexed by the timing Mrs Young said “Did

they have the media release ready to go and just needed to tick a box to say they consulted the community?”

In its statement issued on November 22, the IPHU noted “That there were more cases of leukaemia than expected between 2005 and 2008, while no cases of leukaemia were found in the period 1996 to 2004. Rates of lymphoma were within the expected range”.

“The panel also considered the findings of an environmental investigation conducted by the Illawarra Public Health Unit that reviewed past and current land use in the area and past pollution incidents that may have occurred. The panel found no evidence that the Helensburgh community was at increased risk due to environmental exposures.”

As a result NSW Health concluded “environmental testing is not recommended”.

N E W S HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD“Peabody did dust monitoring at our home

as per our request” said Diane Young, “all we are asking is that Illawarra Public Health leave their desks and do some soil and water testing in the area – how can they possibly reach a finding without doing this?”

Professor Bernard Stewart is head of the Cancer Control Program, South East Sydney Local Health District, and is also a member of the panel. He said the rate of relatively uncommon diseases like leukaemia and lymphoma inevitably vary by chance from very high to very low when looking at one age group in a single postcode area.

“This result poses more questions than answers” said Councillor Petty. Cr Petty tabled a petition signed by over 400 people which called on Council to write to NSW Health seeking, amongst other things, a public information session.

The petition stated that residents are concerned by a perceived increase in the number of cases of leukaemia and Burkitt’s lymphoma in a small area of Helensburgh, and seek a public information session and an assurance that NSW

Health and Council are doing everything possible to protect the lifestyle and safety of the whole 2508 community. The motion was supported by fellow Councillors.

“The (IPHU) study ignored the 428 signatures from local residents requesting soil, air and water testing be done at particular sites. It also ignored Council’s request for a representative to be appointed to the expert panel” said Cr Petty “and we are still waiting for the release of the 2008 study that was said to be just days away in October”.

“Mrs Young asked the Illawarra Public Health Unit to include a Council representative on the panel” said Cr Petty, further adding “Council also wrote and formally asked for a representative to be considered on the panel, yet the panel came up with a finding before council received any notification about this request”.

“Professor Bernard told WIN TV that studies of this nature should be as broad as possible” said Diane Young. “They have missed the point entirely! These kids all live within a few streets of each other – the study is flawed and an insult to us all.”

N E W S HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALDMatthew Hitches A Ride With Blackwell’s Convoy

The annual i98FM’s Camp Quality Convoy was the most successful in its history, raising over $1,000,000 in 2012. Now in its 8th year the Convoy has raised collectively over $3,193,000 for Camp Quality, a charity all for enriching the lives of children living with cancer.

On Sunday November 18, Convoy regulars and Helensburgh business Blackwell Bros, offered Matthew Young a prized spot in a Convoy truck. Nine year old Matthew Young has had a tough year, having been diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukaemia in August, and has since received months of intensive chemotherapy treatment.

In dramatic style, a sleepy Matthew caught up with the Blackwell Bros trucks part way down Mount Ousley.

“I know I was not meant to stop the convoy – but it was Matthew’s day. I just saw Matthew pass his water bottle to driver Rhys, and then saw two big arms yank him into the truck as we briefly held up the convoy” said Matthew’s mum Diane

Young. “It was a great community day and we are really grateful for the offer from Blackwell Bros – it’s awesome that they did this for him.”

Blackwell Bros Director Adam Blackwell said of the day “As a company we have had a tough year, but it is nothing compared to the hardships of these kids and their families. We have made considerable donations over the years, but we were particularly pleased to see that again this year our boys dipped into their own pockets to make a donation – it’s all about the kids”.

The day did bring much enjoyment, but there was a sad reminder that not all kids could be there. Cutting a lonely sight on the back of a Blackwell truck was the motorbike of the late Mitchell Airey. Mitchell passed away on November 8, 2011 after a lengthy battle with leukaemia. He was just 15 years old.

“We miss him (Mitchell) and think of his family often, he loved riding so it was our tribute to him” said Adam.

When asked about his favourite part of the trip with Rhys McPherson, Matthew said it was “Throwing lollies at the people (bystanders)”, which indicates he is well on the way to forgetting the months in hospital and getting back to regular young boy stuff. With a cheeky grin he also said he blew the truck’s air horn so often he thinks he broke it!

A special way to remember a friend lost; Mitchell Airey’s Motorbike is carried on the Convoy.

Eco-Cinema - ’Bag It’Award-winning documentary film about plastic

bags, plastic politics, single-use disposables, how plastics are affecting the health of our oceans and the health of our own bodies. Bag It is the story of Jeb, an average guy who begins by asking where a single plastic bag from the grocery store will end up—and ends up travelling the world to find out how plastic pollution and chemistry alter not only our environment but our bodies and our children’s bodies as well.

I recommend this film for kids and adults alike, as it asks us to listen to the facts and figures and then to consider changing the way we think, feel, and act regarding plastic products, plastic packaging, plastic garbage and plastic pollution. The film also offers some concrete solutions that we can all incorporate into our lives, making our lives both simpler and healthier.

Editor.

Dear Fellow Residents of 2508,I am writing to ask you for help for our school

children in Katoke, Tanzania. Many of you will know us, Marilyn and Sid

Moir. After living in Helensburgh for 36 years and raising our six children we and our daughter Anna answered a call to establish a secondary school in Katoke, a remote, impoverished rural area.

The school has almost 400 students, 300 are boarding at the school. Our students come from impoverished home or are orphans who depend on extended family help.

We depend on finding sponsors to educate these beautiful kids, desperate to escape the clutches of poverty hard to describe.

An example: While working in our garden during the school holidays, a student; Raidisi (Form 3) approached me. Her family (of seven children) had reached the limit of their resources. Last year’s fees are still unpaid.

The family had sold one of their gardens and now faced the prospect of selling off portions of their remaining one.

This prospect endangers the welfare of the whole family, but as Raidisi said with quiet despair – “what else can we do?”

I realised the students on our waiting list for sponsorship is probably only the tip of the iceberg. The only option is for them to return to government schools which have no resources, few teachers, no electricity and no food provided.

Dear Editor, Recently I had the need to avail myself of the

services of the of the local community nursing team.

I would like to say that this service and the wonderful nurses, especially Tracey, are amazing. The nurses are always professional and very caring and certainly contributed in a huge way to my recovery.

We are very lucky to have this service – thank you.

Sincerely, Mrs Val Hamilton, Helensburgh

I resolved to intercede on behalf of our students who are doing it so tough and who put a huge value on education and struggle so hard to succeed.

Would you please open your hearts and your wallets to assist us in our work here?

Donations made to Katoke Trust are tax deductible and every cent reaches the school.

Our personal expenses are provided by donations from our friends. Please consider sponsoring a child, or a one-off donation marked “fee-relief”.

Without help kids like Raidisi who without education and support face a bleak future. For more information on Katoke Trust, contact Alan Watson (President) 9524 0268 http://katoke.com.au/. Even a small donation will make a difference.

To receive our personal newsletters, detailing our work in Tanzania, please contact our daughter Miriam on 4294 2465 or [email protected].

Thank you in anticipation of your help, Marilyn, Sid and Anna Moir.

Thank youThe family of the late John McFall (deceased

H I S TO R Y HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALDOtford And The Croker Island Children

By Jenny Donohoe, Research Officer, Helensburgh and District Historical Society

Otford made its place in history in the ABC documentary Croker Island Exodus presented on November 20, 2012. Little was known about the Otford Mission and the evacuated children from Croker Island, but one of Helensburgh’s long-time residents and teacher Rona Powell remembers.

During WW II with the bombing of Darwin, 95 children were evacuated from Croker Island together with their staff. This perilous journey took six weeks for them to reach the safe haven of the Otford Mission. The group travelled through central Australia, trekking some of the way when the vehicles could not reach them.

Their journey started from the top of Arnhem Land to Pine Creek, Alice Springs, Port Augusta, Adelaide, Melbourne, Albury, Canberra, Sydney then Otford. The documentary by the ABC explains the trials and tribulations of their trek: running out of food, the death of a four year old boy, sleeping under the stars and entertaining the Australian troops with a concert.

The bravery and responsibility of their carers was beyond belief, and the conclusion of the documentary was a celebratory reunion of some of the original group.

Rona was one of the teachers at Otford School. She taught “Infants 1 & 2” and a lot of these

children were from Croker Island, staying at the Otford Mission. At that time, Rona lived at Blue Gum in Helensburgh, some distance from Otford School, and she rode her horse Don to and from school. As a reward for the best kids of the day, Rona would allow the children to catch and ride Don after school, much to their delight.

Rona remembers that when the air-raid drill sirens sounded to evacuate the school building, they would all take off into the bush, and never returned for the rest of the day. This also happened when they had sports afternoon and went to the creek for swimming, which they loved. Again, they would swim to the other side and disappear.

Rona also took some of the children into Sydney on excursions: Luna Park, Taronga Park and shopping. One Christmas, Rona took a few of the children home to await the arrival of Santa and the children were not disappointed with each receiving a gift. However, the funniest incident was when the children caked themselves in talcum powder to make themselves look white. The bathroom came off worst as it also changed to white.

Rona has very fond memories and loved her little charges. She kept in contact with several of them when they went back to Croker Island. Many of these children went on to better education: university, teaching, nursing etc., later marrying and bringing up their children, while all the time remembering the life-saving opportunities they had been given.

Take to the skies this summerWe all know Ball Hill is revered for its natural

beauty, but did you know it is actually revered among the hang gliding community as being one of the best flight locations in the world?

Curt Warren of Stanwell Park based Warren Windsports, has travelled the world looking for the best places to launch and says Bald Hill is second to none “People come from all over the world to fly here, it’s smooth with the wind coming straight off the ocean, I liken it to a top ski field with perfect fresh powder”.

This explains why Chief Flight Instructor Curt, who originally hails from Florida, has made this area his home since 2000.

“I began here with tandem flights in the early years, then started Warren Windsports in 2007” said Curt who has a wealth of flight experience including twice being crowned USA hang gliding champion and taking out 1st place in the Australian Nationals in 2009.

Warren Windsports offers a variety of services for the first-time flyer or the enthusiast including tandem hang gliding, flight instruction,

equipment servicing and sales. Occasionally, a person catches “the bug” and keeps coming back for more. “We call them flying fools” said Curt “that’s someone who gets a real taste for the sport and takes it to the next level.”

Otford resident Mick Gergos has definitely ’caught ‘the bug’ explaining; “Curt and his team teach how to rationalise fear and capitalise on your will to fly.”

“Warren Windsports’ training is self-paced, building up to greater challenges as your knowledge and skills progress. You start on the sand dunes just a few feet off the ground. Once you can safely launch and land, the rest is psychological. The modest cliffs of Austinmer provide a great mental stepping stone prior to flying Stanwell or Hill 60”.

With radio feedback from instructors, your first soaring flights will be stress free. “However challenging, your first solo flight is an experience you’ll never forget” Explained Mick.

Nathan Duran of Helensburgh has also frequently taken to the skies since his first flight saying “Before I went up I knew I wanted to do it, and my first tandem flight confirmed it. Straight away I knew I wanted to continue”.

Swimming is a national pastime in Australia. Whether at the beach or the local pool, come the warmer months of the year, most of us don our togs and sunscreen and head for the water!

So how do swimming nappies actually work? In simple terms, a swimming nappy is just a poo catcher! Even disposable swimming nappies are not absorbent. They don’t contain the absorbent polymers contained in regular disposable nappies – if they did, they would swell up with the pool or beach water! There is no way for a nappy to absorb wee but not absorb the water.

Swimming nappies function by containing, not absorbing, hence why firm elastic around the legs and waist are essential. Cushie Tushies “Aqua” reusable swimming nappy is made with top quality swimwear elastic, which is really durable when used in chlorinated or salt water. Regardless of which kind of swimming nappy you choose to use, it is a good idea to check your baby every half to one hour to ensure it is doing its job (containing mess).

So why not let your baby swim in comfort and style this summer in a Cushie Tushies Aqua reusable swim nappy. A unique one-size design that grows with your baby, fitting approximately 6kg to 17kg and comes in three unisex designs: Beach, Nautical and Aussie.

Christmas With Family By Alison Rowe, Child & Adult PsychologistChristmas is the festive season when you are

supposed to spend quality time with your friends and family eating and drinking and having a merry time. However, Christmas can be a lonely time for those people who do not have any family or friends close by, cannot afford the trimmings of Christmas or are physically or mentally ill.

This Christmas take a moment to perform a minor act of kindness for someone less fortunate than us. Small tasks can include visiting the ill or elderly in hospital or nursing homes; forwarding a meal to a homeless person or stopping to have a chat with them; donating items to a charity; inviting people over for a drink or meal; forwarding a meal or Christmas hamper; or doing volunteer work.

Even if you are spending Christmas with friends and family members, close contact with extended family can be challenging as it is quite common for disagreements to erupt or past feuds to be rekindled. Here a few tips to help you survive Christmas gatherings with family and friends.

Always have realistic expectations from others; accept that everybody is different with regards to personality, cleaning standards, food preparation and every day actions; do not enter into discussions about controversial topics such as religion, politics or child rearing practices unless it is safe to do so; focus on other people’s strengths even if they are minor or difficult

to detect; empathise with and understand other people’s beliefs and actions from their perspective; do not be judgemental and take into consideration other people’s upbringing, culture and religion; use distraction techniques such as humour and comedy or music or other forms of entertainment.

Forgive and forget past negative events; maintain your integrity so do not lower yourself to other people’s standards and continue to treat other people as you would like to be treated; have no preconceptions of other people; accept that you cannot change other people but you can change your response and reactions to situations and other people.

Control your alcohol intake to maintain control of your emotions; think before you talk or act; ignore minor offensive comments/actions; take regular breaks and remove yourself to a quieter area such as a different room, the outdoors or the toilet and use simple relaxation techniques such as slow breathing, counting to ten or focusing on a positive image, memory or scene.

May you all have a peaceful, happy, safe and merry Christmas!

Alison has been working as a Psychologist for the last eleven years and previously in a variety of welfare positions. She is passionate about making a positive difference to people’s lives and can be contacted on m) 0409602430 or [email protected]

Could You Be Any More In Love?By Marie Alessi, Muse Coaching… if you’re reading on, there’s a slight chance

that you are one of many people who desire a little guidance to feel more connected to your partner.

The good news is: you’d be surprised how easy it can be to actually feel loved and understood! In one too many relationships the focus slips outside of the couple’s connection just too quickly – be it kids, work or anything else that takes up most of your attention. The quality time between partners can easily be absorbed by something else that is really close to them. A few years down the track they feel a very strong need to reveal the valuable connection that was once established. This can be quite a challenge for some couples. But rest assured, you’re not alone… literally!

Marie Alessi of Muse Coaching decided to present a Couples Retreat Weekend that will provide everything you need to uncover between the two of you – spend quality time, be pampered, enjoy renewed communication and some silence together, get to know each other with a fresh

perspective and discover how to understand each other better, indulge in delicious food, and relax by the pool. This weekend is designed to give couples space to learn and grow in a safe and cosy environment. It will offer you the perfect balance and an easy first step to revive your relationship.

The Couples Retreat Weekend will be presented at the Mercure Hotel in Gerringong from the 22nd to the 24th of February 2013. Alongside the seminar and activities, there will also be plenty of time to spoil yourselves and indulge in each other and the beautiful environment. Included in the Couples Retreat Weekend are the seminar costs, pampering, accommodation for two nights, breakfast, teas and lunch. You can receive $100 discount when booking before 31st of December 2012.

Marie, your coach for the weekend, lives by her mission and passion of connection. She believes in having fun, inspiring people through her guidance, and facilitating them to find their own inner peace and true connection with themselves and those they love. Marie is an accredited life coach specialising in working with individuals and couples to find the purpose of their lives and relationships.

One of Marie’s clients said: “She really understands the complexities of relationships and has the ability to guide people to experience and realise their true potential in a safe, non-judgemental and open-minded way. She brings people together. Marie is a very wise and well qualified facilitator and coach.”

For details and application forms on the Couples Retreat Weekend go to: www.muse-coaching.com If you can’t do the weekend, talk to Marie about how you can grow your relationships: 0415 520 092

By Bernadette BakerHoly Cross RemembersRemembrance Day is such an important day

for all Australians to honour and remember those who sacrificed so much for our freedom. As Remembrance Day fell on a Sunday this year, Holy Cross held our school ceremony on Friday 8 November. Holy Cross staff and Yr 6 students led the ceremony by sharing prayers for those who gave their life for us in war.

The ceremony concluded with the Last Post. Parents remarked on the reverence and respect shown by all students. Students sang the National Anthem with pride.

At the Helensburgh Community Service, held at the cenotaph on Sunday 11 November, a wreath was laid on behalf of Holy Cross by Mrs Bernadette Baker and students Grace Luciano and Hamilton Reilly. These senior students also read poems that they had written which focused on Australia’s role in World War 1.

Under ThreatBy Peter Turner, Northern Illawarra

Sustainability AllianceEarlier this year Illawarra Residents for

Responsible Mining initiated a court challenge to the legality of Gujarat NRE’s abuse of transitionary legislation to bypass the normal proposal approval process for new longwall mining project proposals. In response to that challenge, Gujarat sough a court order for security from IRRM to cover any costs to Gujarat arising from the IRRM challenge. Gujarat also challenged IRRM’s contention that the challenge was being made in the public interest.

The judgment on GNRE’s security for costs motion against IRRM was handed down last Thursday in the Land and Environment Court. The presiding judge upheld Gujarat’s claim for security, requiring IRRM to provide $40,000 in order to proceed with the challenge. IRRM is currently considering its options, but is unlikely to be able to provide the required security. In making the determination the judge was aware of IRRM’s limited financial resources and that it would then be unlikely that IRRM will be able to proceed with the challenge.

The Judge did however agree that the case was being brought in the public interest. Regrettable then that the costs of the legal system mean it effectively serves the interests of the wealthy.

IRRM would not have been able to get as far

as they did without the help of the EDO. Sadly, the O’Farrell government now wants to do away with the EDO. Here’s a reminder of what you can do to help save the EDO - its important, won’t take much of your time and it will help:

(i) Sign this e-petition and help us reach the target of 5000 signature:

http://www.change.org/petitions/nsw-government-save-environmental-defender-s-office-edo-nsw

(ii) Send an email to the Premier, the Attorney-General Greg Smith, Minister for Planning Brad Hazzard and your local MP (e.g. Lee Evans and/or Ryan Park); contact details below. Urge the Premier, Attorney-General, Minister for Planning and your local MP to guarantee continued funding for the EDO. Point out that the EDO provides communities, groups and individuals with expert legal advice and assistance on planning and environmental issues that would not otherwise be affordable. Without the EDO there would be a lack of balance in the project proposal assessment and implementation process, with the less wealthy being critically disadvantaged. Cutting funding to the EDO would be counter to the Premiers commitment to return planing powers to local communities and would further undermine his credibility. The communities who have benefited from the EDO cut across the political spectrum and cutting the funding for the EDO will have a cost for the Government at the next election.

(iii) Follow-up with a phone call to the Premier, Greg Smith, Brad Hazzard and your local MP.

Lions Club Wishing TreeYour local Lions Club wishes you all a very

merry and safe Christmas this festive season but, sadly, not all families will enjoy a Christmas lunch and a pressie under the tree.

You can make their day very special by shopping locally and placing any new, unwrapped gifts and non-perishable food items under our Wishing Tree for distribution to needy families in the Illawarra region.

Games, sporting equipment or toys for children, music or department or variety store vouchers for the teens (often forgotten), pamper packs, photo frames or chocolates for mum and grandma and tools, sweet treats and man things for dad and grandad - everyone deserves a special gift of their own at Christmas.

The Wishing Tree will be on display at the Helensburgh Workers’ Club between 29 November and 19 December, and we really look forward to your support.

Thank you!

C LU B N E W S HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALDWAVES 2508

Widows and Veterans Entitlement Service inc. By Brian Taylor Vice President

Well, what a great month October turned out to be!

WAVES 2508 took our members plus other pensioners on a bus trip to Cowra for two nights and three days. All up we had 41 people and we booked out an entire motel; the hospitality was fantastic. Charlie, the proprietor, originally lived in Heathcote, where he ran a fruit shop. He and his wife Rosie (a doctor in her homeland), could not do enough to make our stay more enjoyable.

Whilst there, we visited the Japanese Gardens and the remains of the Prisoner of War Compound. Unfortunately, there is not much left now: concrete floors and the guard tower are the only remaining remnants of the war. We also visited the museum. This guy has so much to look at that when you purchase an entry ticket it lasts for fourteen days - you just can’t see everything in one day. Talk about a men’s shed.

He has old train carriages, steam-run machinery still in working order, and a fantastic array of memorabilia from the Prisoner of War Compound. We also visited the Cowra Rose Garden, but unfortunately it was too early for some roses to be in bloom. You also have to watch out for bushrangers as they still exist out there, as some of our members found out.

On our return trip we ventured back through the Blue Mountains and stopped at Leura for lunch.

There was no chance of visiting the Three Sisters as there were too many visitors and no coach parking close enough for our elderly members.

On our way to Bathurst, our trusty coach driver Denis, from Premier Coaches, requested a ten minute detour. How many people have done the Mount Panorama circuit in a 48-seater coach? No wheel spins or rubber left on the track, and a top speed of approximately 40 km per hour, but we made it safely without mishap (or a fine) and returned to the ‘Burgh with a tired but happy bus load of members and friends.

Our next money-raising venture will be the Xmas raffle. This year we have three prizes.

1st prize: custom-made surfboard, 2nd prize: remote-controlled off-road 4x4, truck. 3rd prize: Xmas Hamper.

Tickets are $1each or 6 for $5, and will be on sale outside Bi-Lo in late November, early December. Anyone wishing early tickets can purchase them from Grant Dillon at the pub, Jeff Lucke at the surf club or Graham and Brian. The draw will take place on December 15 outside Bi-Lo.

Stanwell Park CWA NewsBy Angela Fagerström, Stanwell Park

Branch CWA Publicity OfficerThe 2012 Festival of Flight was arguably one

of the best yet! The historic naval Helicopter scheduled to make an appearance on the day was an unfortunate late scratching but the hang gliders and box kites were out in force and gave onlookers plenty to marvel at on the glorious spring day Stanwell Park gave us.

Preparations are already under way for the 2013 Festival of Flight. The annual event celebrates the historical significance of Stanwell Park as the “Birthplace of Flight” where Australia’s aviation pioneer Lawrence Hargrave became the first man in Australia to fly on 12 November 1894.

If you are interested in contributing to the Festival of Flight in 2013, please contact our President Carol Pugh on 4294 1343 or [email protected]

The Stanwell Park CWA wishes to thank Wollongong City Council for their sponsorship of the event and the continued support and participation of the Lawrence Hargrave Centre

www.lawrencehargravecentre.comIn other CWA news a small envoy of our

members visited the Port Kembla Branch for their ‘cent day’ raffles. This is a big fundraiser for the branch, and features mystery gifts that can start from as low as a cent, not to mention a fabulous lunch. There were a lot of laughs shared and a great day was had by all!

Stanwell Park CWA’s regular meetings will recommence in February 2013 on the first Tuesday of each month at the CWA Hall on The Drive, Stanwell Park. New members welcome.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all the community from the Stanwell Park CWA!

Our Christmas luncheon was held on November 20 and it was enjoyed by everyone. We welcomed two new members, and there were visitors from Thirroul VIEW Club (which has over 100 members), and of course, Santa. He presented everyone with a gift from our Secret Santa table, after which lunch was served - a delicious spread with all the trimmings.

Many thanks Centennial Hotel, and thank you Kerry, for your yummy shortbread which is a feature of our Christmases. Thank you also, to the ladies for the baked goods on our sales table and for the donations to our lucky door prizes and raffles - always a great feature of VIEW luncheons.

Two special visitors were Richard and Cara, from The Smith Family Learning for Life program. They gave us an update on its success in helping some young students at school, who were chosen by their teachers from families unable to fully support their children. Because of this assistance, some are among the first in their families to be able to go to TAFE. Our club has been able to support our student although we are only a small club. Some clubs like Thirroul, are able to support more children – a wonderful achievement.

Theatre parties to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Legally Blonde and War Horse had to be cancelled due to lack of response. New parties for 2013 are planned: CARMEN - Live Opera on Sydney Harbour, 7:30 pm on April 6, pay by

January 15; One Man, Two Guvnors, comedy and music, at Sydney Theatre Company, Walsh Bay, 1:30 pm matinee on May 4, pay by March 19. Also bookings are open for South Pacific (be early for this) at the Opera House, 1 pm matinee on September 28, pay by August 2. Travel by bus for all trips, and full details are available from Chris on 4294 1103.

If you saw the program Croker Island Exodus on ABC television, showing the children who journeyed with great difficulty from Darwin to Sydney during the Japanese raids on Darwin in WW II, then you would have seen a segment where the younger ones were sent to Otford. Our own Rona Powell was their teacher, and it brought back some great memories for her.

Our next luncheon will be on Tuesday February 19, 2013 at Centennial Hotel, 11 am for 11:15 start, featuring Marcia McInerney’s Postie fashions. All welcome.

For new bookings or cancellations please phone Nerida on 0429 004 298 by Wednesday February 13. VIEW wishes all our readers A Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year

S P O R T HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALDFitness Gives Opportunities

By Elaine BoltonIt’s really inspiring to see people achieve

things far beyond their initial expectations. This helps motivate me to keep working hard towards my own fitness and sports goals as well as those of my clients. It also makes my job as a personal trainer exceptionally fulfilling. This month I would like to highlight the achievements of one of my long-term clients who has inspired me greatly, and whose story shows that you can’t always foresee the great opportunities that being really fit can bring you.

I first met Melodee White, a Helensburgh local, at one of my Transform fat loss programs, then run at Coastlands Fitness Centre. She had been a smoker and wanted to get fit and lose some weight. She stuck consistently with the program, improved her fitness and strength dramatically as well as losing some weight. Melodee went on to run several fun runs.

This alone was a great result. However, after some time, some injuries associated with running started to appear.

Perhaps it was the injuries or the desire to see at bit more of her husband Peter, but Melodee took up dragon boat paddling with the Sandy Point Dragons.

The couple also started attending my strength and conditioning sessions at the gym. Both have now spent some years consistently training for their sport of dragon boating and have also been my most consistent clients at the gym. This is evidenced by their success, both having represented NSW in their respective dragon boating divisions.

I tell this story though, to let you know of Melodee’s latest achievement. Melodee was the sweep for the Danebank School under 18 girls dragon boat squad, the Danebank Flames that competed at the recent Club Crew Dragon Boat World Championships in Hong Kong.

The under 18s standard size boat of 18 paddlers came home with three gold medals. The smaller under 16s crew of 10 paddlers also won two silver medals.

Melodee described the conditions on Victoria Harbour as “very challenging” which required all her strength to steer a straight course. She credits her strength to all the conditioning she had done beforehand.

Melodee’s journey has not been without obstacles. She has had some major challenges along the way, including a back injury, but was able to pick up her training again each time at the earliest possible opportunity. Both Peter and Melodee are the ones to turn up to my training sessions even when it’s held outdoors and there is a storm raging.

There have been several occasions when I would have liked to stay home in the warm and dry but these two were there at the park waiting for me. I’m sure when Melodee started out she could not have imagined the level of sporting success she would achieve. She is truly an inspiration.

By Mark ‘Bluey’ LeaThe local Helensburgh Stanwell Park Open

Women’s Surfboat crew has just come back from a successful World Lifesaving Championship at Christies Beach, Adelaide.

The crew of Georgia Leach, Stef Barlow, Courtney Overell, Brooke Dent and sweep Mark ‘Bluey’ Lea ground their way through some very tough heats, quarters and semifinals to reach the final.

Conditions were very flat suiting the still water based crews, but as the day went on the wind came up and produced more favourable conditions for our local team.

The final was filled with quality crews and the girls knew they had to row at their best to stay with the top crews.

Starting well in the final, the girls were level with the top four crews. Approaching the turning cans, Mooloolaba from Queensland moved out to about a boat’s length lead with nothing between North Cottosloe from Western Australia, Austinmer and our local crew. After a great buoy turn our girls headed home rowing away from the Austinmer and North Cottosloe crews, gaining on Mooloolaba.

Rowing their hearts out the girls kept coming at the leaders and started to level as they hit the finish line. After waiting for the official order, the girls were given second place just behind Mooloolaba.

Local Girls Row To Silver At World Lifesaving ChampionshipA strong bunch of supporters

cheered, and the girls celebrated knowing they had given it their best shot.

A silver medal at the World Championship in their first year in the Open Women’s Division is a fantastic result for this young crew.

By Vicki “The Hair” LittleAll our challengers are coming to the end of

another year. We had the final of our match play with Travis Chipperfield taking the glory over Kevy “Cyclone” Brown; never mind, you had your glory last month. Well done to both of you. Things have changed a bit with our Xmas party now on January 20, with a game of golf on the agenda. When you just think that the partying is over. We do what we have to do, damn it!

Our game on November 4 was a great day. With Dave Morris taking out 1st place with 41 points (bugger), then yours truly Vicki “The Hair” on 40 points (yippee), and “Goose” taking 3rd on 36 points. I just love whipping those boys; I think it’s a bit of a girl thing.

December 2 is going to be a fun day. It will be interesting to see what game Tony Prez comes up with - as long as it’s not strip golf - naked, er ugly.

I’d just like to wish all our players and readers a very Merry Xmas. We have had births and deaths, sickness and health which are all memorable. So here’s cheers to all!
