A Message From

Our Pastor

Rev. Dr. Ron Watson

December 2012Dear Friends,

In all likelihood, the Sessionwill approve a provisional budget for 2013 based on those pledges. We intend to have a balanced budget for next year as we did for this year.

It needs to be said that your generosity is the vital element in makingour church what it is today. Traditionally, December has been a month ofexcellent giving. We hope and pray that this Advent season is no different.

"Unto Us a Child is Born"

The birth of a child changes the dynamics of a family! Some may say that is an understatement. When a child arrivestheir life transforms the lives around him/her. If you thoughtyou had the capacity to make your own decisions it has shiftedonce the baby cries out. It's wonderful to see the faces of grumpypeople in a grocery store line transition to smiles when they seea baby.

Change, transition, transform and shift are all words thatdescribe how the arrival of Jesus Christ in our lives moves andenlivens our spirits and bodies. Change happens in so manyways and as we know some transitions are challenges. But!!!!This Christmas season reminds us to celebrate who we are asfollowers of Jesus Christ. For "Unto Us a Child is Born!" A childwho was born in "ancient times" is alive today in each one of usbelievers. A child who by being born of simple people transformedthe earth!

During Christmas remember "a CHILD" has changedyour life forever…even in the midst of human transformations, chal-lenges, family dynamics, disease process, and sometimesmayhem…his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, themighty God, the ever lasting Father, The Prince of Peace…untous a child is born."

God's Blessings and Merry Christmas to all.

Italian

You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will

be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of

his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.

Christmas Angel Tree

It's again that time of year when we have the privilege of makingthe Christmas season a bit brighter than it would otherwise be for persons inthree missions programs supported by our church. These persons are:children in the Family Food (Gilda Blair) Program, children in the FamilyLife/ Safe House Program, and residents at the Duvall Home.

Here's how it works: The Christmas Angel Tree will be placed inthe narthex by Sunday, December 2, with angel ornaments. Beginning onthat date, please take one (or more) ornaments from the tree. On the angelwill be the name of a child (or Duvall resident) with the child's age, size, and suggestions for a gift. Then please place your wrapped gift under theAngel Tree by Sunday, December 16 - on that date members of theMissions Committee will be distributing the gifts.

Thanks for making this a happier Christmas for those in need.

SPOTLIGHT ON TRINITY PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN THIS FALL

This fall the Trinity Presbyterian Womenhave kept very busy. Circle meetings resumed inSeptember and a new study on the General Epistlesof the Bible has started. Four circles meet duringthe day, two at Trinity and two in circle members'homes. An evening circle meets once a month atthe church; this is ideal for working women or thosewho are not available during the day. All circleswelcome new members.

At the September 26th quarterly luncheon, the ladies brought a mountain of school suppliesfor the Stuff the Bus program. We alsoenjoyed learning about the equipment andservices provided free in Florida for those whoare hearing impaired. The month of October was devoted to the

Trinity Presbyterian Women's special project for2012. The goal was to "blanket the world with love"by providing blankets to those in need through

On October 26, Trinity hosted a workshopfor churches in our region to gather and make LittleDresses for Africa. Twenty four women representingthree churches in our region gathered for fellowshipand worthwhile labor. Over 30 dresses were madethat day. All the dresses made by women in St.Augustine Presbytery will be dedicated at the annualgathering at First Presbyterian Church, Lake City onJanuary 26, 2013. Then all the dresses and britches forboys will be shipped to Africa.

The next event to mark on your calendar is theDecember 12th Quarterly Luncheon. This is such adelightful kick-off to the holidays as the entertainmentincludes the Trinity Ringers as well as Christmas songsperformed by the children who attend the TLC preschool. All women of the church are invited to participate in asmany Women's Association activities as possible. Theyprovide entertainment, fellowship, and support as well asmany educational opportunities. We hope to see you there.

Look for your Advent Devotional BookletEach year, beginning in 2005, the Christian Education

Committee has provided an advent devotional booklet written by mem-

bers of our congregation.

Not long ago I met a lovely lady who told me she has been

coming to our church longer than I have (ten years). She has never seen

one she said! I told her we hand them out before each service the

Sunday before advent starts. She was sure she has never been offered

one. Others have told me they almost failed to take it because they

thought it was just another program.

The devotionals offered by our congregants are outstanding

and personal. This year our theme will be on "gifts" with some truly

inspirational messages.

Look for it. Lois Settles for the CEC.

New Member Pot Luck Dinner

A pot luck dinner was held in Mehaffey Hall to introducethe new members joining Trinity since the last dinner two yearsago. Of 22 new members and guests expected 20 attended. Ofthe 50 workers and guests expected 45 attended.

This gathering of 65 learned a little bit about each ofthe new members joining the Trinity family. A short programdemonstrated the MC could multitask with a microphone in onehand and a long-distance wireless mouse in the other. A miracleof modern technology was also demonstrated live highlightingTrinity as a Wifi hotspot and an online directory that only Godcan view without the password.

The gathering was sponsored by the MembershipCommittee and supported by the Congregational Life Committee.

Thanks Bob

Christmas has both a strong religious and traditional meaning. It hasa certain feel, all to itself, that you usually do not feel at any other timeof the year. It creates within us, a sense of kindness and concern forfellow man. At no other time are we more generous and giving. It cre-ates a sense of family and belonging.Everyone comes home for the Christmas holiday. It is a time of fami-ly and giving. It is truely a time that comes but once a year. Christmasis celebrated in most countries around the world! And so, we invite you to ride along. Join us in celebration of the magic, the wonder and the spirit of this holiday season.

From all of us at Trinity Presbyterian, we wish you a peacefulChristmas, and a prosperous New Year!

Let there be peace and good will this Christmas.

December 26th Boxing Day

However, some people will celebrate it on the first weekdayafter Christmas. If Christmas falls on a Friday or a Saturday, BoxingDay is the following Monday.

This is also St. Stephans Day, where Boxing Day gets some ofit's roots. On St. Stephans' Day, churches opened their collectionboxes to the poor. Boxing Day was an expression of appreciation andthanks, much like Christmas tips are today. The roots of the holidaygoes back to the Middle Ages . On this day, members of the merchantclass would take boxes, fill them with food and fruits, and give themto servants, tradespeople and the less fortunate. In the case ofservants, they would work on Christmas Day, so it was only fittingthat immediately after Christmas, they would be given a day offto celebrate. Usually celebrated the day after Christmas.

Today, the giving of boxes includes filling boxes with food andclothing for the needy and performing volunteer work. Monetary giftsto charity are also common.

January 1st New Years Eve 2012 and Day

New Year's Eve is when all the fun and festivities are. We seeout the old year and ring in the new. It is often thought of as a timeto drink and be merry.

New Years' Day on the other hand, is a time to relax and enjoythe start of a bright and promising new year....a new beginning. It isa time to be with family. After all, you haven't seen your mother in lawsince last year. To many Americans, the ball dropping at Times Square

in New York City signals the start of the new year in thiscountry. The ball was first dropped in 1908.

During the attack at Pearl Harbor, over 2,400 Americanservicemen and 68 civilians were killed. Five of the eight battleships atPearl Harbor were sunk or sinking, and virtually all ships were damaged. On December 8, 1941 President Franklin D. December 9 Christmas Card DayChristmas Card Day, honors Sir Henry Cole (1818 - 1874) of England.Cole created the first commercial Christmas Card in 1843. Just a fewdecades ago, sending Christmas cards through the mail was a holiday"must". Sending cards through the mail continues to be very popular. The cost and time for writing and sending cards has caused many peo-ple to stop sending them. Free Ecards have surged in popularity.

December 21 Forefather's Day

Forefather's Day commemorates the pilgrims landing atPlymouth Rock in 1620. They left for the New World, to escapereligious persecution. After a late fall start, the Mayflower set sail fromEngland and landed at Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts just beforeChristmas. This holiday is celebrated largely in New England. If you arenot from New England, chances are you this is the first you have heardof Forefather's Day.

The pilgrims originally set sail from England in two ships, theSpeedwell and the Mayflower. The Speedwell leaked so badly, that theywere forced to return to England, Ultimately, they all crammed into theMayflower, and set sail from Plymouth, England. It was much laterthan they had planned. Strong fall west winds also delayed their arrivalin the New World. Finally, on December 21, 1620 they landed.

Forefather's Day was first celebrated in Plymouth,Massachusetts in 1769. A group of descendants gathered to have afeast in honor of the pilgrims. This group shared a meal together, which included many native American delicacies.
