Co-Chair Letter, December, 2012
We Dream Big, Hope Big and Relay Big!
2012 has been a wonderful year for our Relay, the American
Cancer Society in Lancaster County and in the continued fight to
find a CURE. We would like to take a moment to thank everyone
for your kindness and consideration in the past year. As Co-Chairs,
we recognize the effort it takes for a successful event. We want to
thank our volunteer committee, team captains and teams. We want
to thank our sponsors and participants. A special thank you and
Happy Birthday goes to our survivors and all caregivers, and finally,
a round of applause for the students, faculty and staff at Cocalico,
Ephrata and Garden Spot. We live in a very special place and the
support of our Northern Lancaster County community is an
important part of our success!
Planning for our 2013 event is well underway and our teams
have already had a number of fundraisers. We hope you will
continue to support their efforts.
At the January 8th rally we will introduce our Honorary
Survivor and Caregiver. We will hear a great new way for our team
captains to participate in the Luminaria service and have a tutorial
about the new online website and signups. The new website is a
wonderful tool and very advanced compared to our previous
programs. It is amazing what a help it will be for our teams and
fundraising. Our planning committee is full ideas to keep everyone
busy during our June event but new ideas are welcome and we invite
yours!
Have a very blessed and merry Christmas and holiday season.
Thank you ALL!! We’ll see you in 2013!

Cancer During the Holidays Article date: December 3, 2012
The holidays can be a difficult time of year when you or a loved one is facing cancer. Your usual
traditions may be disrupted by treatment needs or unpleasant side effects; the demands of the season
may feel overwhelming when combined with the emotions stirred by dealing with a serious illness.
These tips and resources can help get you through: Do
Give yourself permission to feel and express your feelings, whether of joy, fear, sadness, or pain.
Let yourself laugh or cry.
Take care of yourself: Eat balanced meals and make time for some exercise. Physical activity is a
good way to release the tension that builds around this time of year.
Allow yourself simple pleasures -- hot baths, naps, favorite foods -- that will help lift your mood.
Find distractions like going to a movie, dinner, or a ball game; playing cards with friends, or other
activities you enjoy.
Prepare for the holidays. Decide if you want to continue certain traditions or create new ones. Plan
in advance how you want to spend your time, with whom, and for how long.
Enlist support for organizing holiday gatherings, meal preparation, and cleanup.
Learn to say no. You don't have to participate in everything. People will understand if you can't do
certain activities.
Don’t Don't pressure yourself with unrealistic expectations or try to do everything yourself.
Don't overindulge in alcohol. Since alcohol is a depressant, it can “bring out” or heighten bad
feelings.
Don't try to force yourself to be happy just because it‟s the holiday season.
Don't shop „til you drop. Stick to a budget if you are going shopping. Buying things will not make up
for any negative feelings you are having. Decide how much money you can afford to spend on
gifts and other items. Then stick to your budget.
Don't plan too much per day. Plan ahead, setting aside specific days for specific tasks.
Don't abandon healthy habits. Eat and drink in moderation. Get plenty of sleep.

CANCER PREVENTION STUDY-3
Research today for a cancer-free tomorrow
To better understand ways to prevent cancer, the American Cancer Society is recruiting
men and women across the US and Puerto Rico for a landmark new research study –
Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3). Enrollment is being made possible at the HACC
Lancaster campus Main Building room 22 during February 20th. Individuals may
choose to participate if they are willing to make a long-term commitment to the study
(which involves completing follow-up surveys periodically over the next 20-30 years),
are between the ages of 30 and 65 years old and have never been diagnosed with cancer.
CPS-3 will help researchers better understand the genetic, environmental and other
factors that may cause or prevent cancer. For more information, visit www.cps3hacc.org
call 1-888-604-5888 or e-mail [email protected].
"We have noticed some teams attending the Rallys together then having meetings in the back of the cafeteria. What a wonderful idea! We invite you to bring your team to
the Rally, attend the meeting, then have your own team meeting! The Relay committee meets from 7:00-8:00 pm, so if you have any questions, we are there too!"

What is the American Cancer Society
Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN)?
ACS CAN is the nation’s leading cancer
advocacy organization that is working every day
to make cancer issues a national priority.
Many of the most important decisions about
cancer are made outside of your doctor’s office.
Instead, they are made by your state legislature, in
Congress and in the White House. ACS CAN
empowers regular people to be part of the
growing national movement that is fighting back
against cancer.
ACS CAN, the nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy
affiliate of the American Cancer Society, is
holding lawmakers accountable for their words
and their actions. We demand that our leaders not
only talk about fighting cancer but take real steps
toward decreasing the number of people suffering
and dying from cancer.
About ACS CAN
Today, over 70% of all
Americans live in a
smoke-free community.
- But millions are still forced to work in
smoke-filled workplaces.
Today, advances in cancer prevention, early
detection, treatment, and care mean that we are
winning the war on cancer.
- But Congress has frozen or cut funding for
cancer research and programs for the past five
years.
Today, women have better access to
mammograms.
- But millions of women, men and children are
uninsured and millions more are underinsured,
with little or no access to life-saving screenings
and treatments.
ACS CAN Is Winning the War on Cancer
ACS CAN will defeat cancer by:
Funding aggressive grassroots, lobbying and media campaigns to make every state smoke-free
and to increase tobacco taxes and funding for cancer research. We advocate for early detection
programs such as mammograms and colon cancer screenings
Educating the public and media directly by supporting sophisticated training programs for
volunteers to strengthen our movement and ensure that our voices are truly heard in the halls of
government;
Hosting debates and producing voter guides, candidate forums, and advertising to get every
lawmaker and candidate on the record in support of laws and policies that help people fight
cancer and save lives.
These efforts produce policies, laws, and regulations that further the overall mission of both the
American Cancer Society and ACS CAN.
FOCUS ON ACS CAN…
