Fisher House Benefit Concert

On November 16 Palos Council 35 hosted a benefit concert for Fisher House featuring Irish entertainer Seamus Kennedy. Over 100 attended and a fun time was had by all. The event raised a total of $2430 for Fisher House. If you missed it you may get another chance next year. Seamus has agreed to come back for another fund raising concert.

Notices for 2014 dues will be going out before the first of the year. Please make an effort to remit payments early to avoid second and subsequent bills having to be sent. Contact F.S. Claude Genest A.S.A.P. with any discrepancies or with any problem in making payment. If we don’t have your email address (you aren’t receiving Council newsletters or notices online) or it has changed, please give us that info when you make your remittance or by emailing [email protected]. If you do not have email would you be willing to pay $10 a year for postage and printing to receive it by mail? Honorary life members if you want to make a donation to the council for scholarship, Fisher house, or other cause please let us know.

By Laws Committee

The By Laws Committee has completed their review of our current by laws and has made their recommendations to the Grand Knight on needed changes. Supreme provides a by laws template that makes the updating process easier. The template only allows for the local Council to change a few things. Here are the key items that the committee updated or retained. The final version of the by laws will be voted on at the January meeting. If you would like a copy of the draft or have comments email committee chair Mike Corey by January 10, 2014. [email protected] Dues – will remain the same, $40 per year. Initiation fee - $25 covers first, second, and third degree. Those under the age of 26 will be $10. There is no initiation fee for religious. Meeting date and time – No change, only one meeting per month. Quorum – reduced from 12 to 8. Maximum amount that can be paid without a vote - $100, no change. CONNECTICUT KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS TO HOST NOVENA & HOLY HOUR FOR ARCHBISHOP-ELECT BLAIR

AND ARCHBISHOP MANSELL

Commencing on Sunday, Dec. 8 and running through Monday, Dec. 16, the Connecticut Knights of Columbus will be sponsoring a statewide novena to pray for our new Archbishop Leonard P. Blair and in grateful appreciation for Archbishop Henry J. Mansell. Archbishop Blair will be officially installed as the new Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Hartford on Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford. Each night of the Novena, councils throughout the archdiocese, as well as the state, are being asked to host a parish Holy Hour, with Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, the praying of the Rosary, Novena intentions, and the Prayer for the Canonization of Venerable Michael J. McGivney. This Novena will be a unique demonstration by Connecticut Knights of Columbus of our solidarity with our new archbishop and to show our appreciation for Archbishop Mansell’s years of service to the Church and the Knights of Columbus. Though the Knights is spearheading this effort, the Novena should be promoted broadly so that all the faithful may take part. A specially prepared liturgy aid for the Novena and Holy Hour is attached in PDF format or can be downloaded at the Connecticut Knights of Columbus web site — http://www.ctstatecouncil.org. Photocopies should be made locally and given to participants. Either the grand knight, chaplain or other council member should lead the praying of the Rosary at each sponsored Holy Hour. Grand knights should contact their local assembly to see if at least two Sir Knights can serve in an honor guard during Exposition. Of special note: During the course of the novena the Silver Rose will be traveling throughout the state as part of our annual witness to the sanctity of life throughout the Americas. On Dec. 8th, the Silver Rose will be at the Cathedral of St. Joseph, and on Dec. 12th, the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, at St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, where the Silver Rose program for this year will conclude. It is not the intention of the state council to have each council host a Holy Hour every night of the Novena. Towns with multiple parishes and multiple councils, however, may wish to coordinate their schedules to cover as many nights of the Novena as possible. It is imperative that you work with your chaplain and pastor to schedule your Holy Hour as soon as possible. Once you have scheduled your Holy Hour, please send your information to Father Tim S. Hickey at [email protected] no later than Saturday, Nov. 30. A master list of all dates, sponsoring councils and/or parishes will be published on the state council web site and disseminated to district deputies and grand knights so that as many members and their families as possible can take part in all nine days of the program at a Holy Hour near them. For additional information about this initiative, please contact Father Hickey at the above email address or at 203-996-7854.

There is a new email address for the Council and Assembly. The new email address is [email protected] This address has been set up to send email out on behalf of the Council or the Assembly to all members. The reason for doing this is so that we have one address to send out notifications even if and when officers change. The Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator will have access to this email address. Other may be given access to it at the GK and FN’s discretion. If you would like to be added to the master email list send an email to [email protected] with a note to add you. We also have a new Facebook page. The page can be accessed at https://www.facebook.com/kofcbristolct Go to the page and click the button that says “Like” in the upper right of the page. We will be posting items of interest to Knights and local events here.

Mankind is a great, an immense family... This is proved by what we feel in our hearts at Christmas.- Pope John XXIII

Grand Knight’s Report

Dear Brother Knights, I would like to start off by wishing everyone and their families a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. As a council our goals for the coming year must focus on recruiting new members. We can do this through membership drives, council functions, and being active in the parishes and community. The average age of our membership is 63 and, currently, we have more members in their 90’s than in their 20’s. In fact the total number of members in their 20’s or 30’s is only 19 and 39 members have less than one year of service. Do you know a young man that would make a good knight? Reach out to them. For those 39 with less than one year of service we need to make an extra effort to keep them connected to council activities. Council events are critical in recruitment of new members and retention of existing members. The council should be a source of good work for the community and we must look for those that are willing to be part of that good work. "We consider Christmas as the encounter, the great encounter, the historical encounter, the decisive encounter between God and mankind. He who has faith knows this truly, let him rejoice" Pope Paul VI Vivat Jesus! Kevin Glazier, Grand Knight

Faithful Navigator’s Report

Dear Sir Knights, I hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving! If you know of a Brother Knight or a family member who is sick or in distress please contact me or one of the officers to let them know so we can take proper action. We cannot do this without being aware of it , so it is the responsibility of the members and their families to let us know as soon as possible. I am making a call to action to all of my Brother Knights! St. Vincent de Paul’s in Bristol is in desperate need of blankets and pillows. Blankets can be used but must be clean. Pillows must be new. Cold temperatures are already here and these items can go a long way to helping those in need. If you would like to donate please contact me and I will pick up your donation or provide you with information on where to drop it off. There will be no 4th degree meeting in December. Our next meeting will be January 13th. Finally, I would like to wish all Knights and their families a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Gil Martin F.N. Assembly 108

Please Keep in Your Prayers

All brother Knights and their families. We pray especially for our brother Knight and Archbishop Designate Leonard Blair. We give thanks for the ministry of Archbishop Mansell and ask for blessings in his retirement. For those that have passed away, may light perpetual shine upon them, especially: Wilfred Doucette For those in the military especially: PFC Thomas Carrell, USMC For those celebrating a birthday this month we offer thanksgiving especially: Camille Cyr (1), Joseph J Majersky (1), Joseph P Masotti (1), Edward C Krawiecki Jr (2), Valmore O Malenfant (4), Anthony M Luciani (5), Karl Turcotte (8), Roland J Bourgoin (10), Richard J Brown (11), Wilfred L Doucette (11), James W Orie Sr (11), Rheal J Bouchard (13), Claude D Roy (15), Enoil H Martin (17), Newman J Masse (18), Denis L Ytalien (19), Paul E Veilleux (20), Joseph N Saucier (21), Edward J Dziedzic (22), Vernon R Goodine (22), Laurier W Doyon (23), Alphy J Cyr (25), Joseph N Swart (25), Ronald L Tousignant (25), Benoit Levesque (30), Romeo Jean Pa Levesque (30).

Get Involved!

Palos Council 35 needs your help. The work of the Knights of Columbus is carried out by individual members. There are opportunities to get involved through committees, assisting with events, and through the parishes. A wise man once said that “A lazy man has no time, a busy man makes time”. There is always a way to pitch in to build up God’s kingdom through the Church. If you would like to become more active please contact Grand Knight Kevin Glazier. His contact information can be found on the first page of the Pen and in the list of officers.
