The Manse of Dalziel St. Andrew’s Parish Church Dear friends As I write this letter, there’s only 7 weeks to go until Christmas 2013. By the time you read this edition of Kirk Matters, even less time will remain to make all the necessary preparations. It’s always a hectic period in virtually every household, with gifts and cards to select and send, food to purchase and prepare, as well as decorations to lay out and light up! But, hey, wait a moment. While all of these things are enjoyable, they ought not to be the entire focus for our celebrations on 25th December. The birth of the Christ-‐child is unsurpassed in historic importance. God taking upon Himself the flesh of mankind is no small matter. Giving up the glory of Heaven for the muck and mess of an enclosure for animals tells us just how much He must love us. We hear phrases bandied about like "the wonder of Christmas" when, for some in our society, it may be more apt to speak of “the worry of Christmas.” Concerns are rising over how many people fall into debt at this time. There is also the ever-‐present threat to elderly folk who worry over whether they can afford to switch on their heating. Statistics often show that this is the worst period for cases of domestic abuse, and the anxiety this visits on vulnerable women and children. But, what has all of that got to do with Jesus’ incarnation and the love of God? Everything! As bad as these situations are, they remind us of the heart of the Gospel message, which the church needs to trumpet at Christmas, and at every other time of the year. In the person of Jesus Christ, God is among us. And, He has come to demonstrate His wonderful love for mankind. So, let's celebrate for all we are worth at Christmas time, giving thanks for the LORD's goodness, while not forgetting to share what we have, in word and action, with those who are under pressure in this season of peace and goodwill. Happy CHRISTmas to all who are part of our loving church family.

Kirk Session Meeting June 2013
The Kirk Session met on Thursday 13 June 2013. There were 45 elders present with 7 apologies. Long Service Awards: Long Service Certificates for 30 years devoted service as Elders were presented to Helen Gibson, Margaret Kells and Helen Lawson on Communion Sunday 2 June 2013. This was followed on Sunday 9 June 2013 by the presentation of a certificate along with a watch from the Kirk Session to John Arthur for 50 years devoted service as an Elder. John Arthur thanked the Moderator and the Kirk Session for the gift and award stating that it had been a privilege for him to serve the Lord in this way.
Heart and Soul 2013: Our table had been well received at the event. A lot interest had been generated about our ‘Forward for Jesus’ Makeover and our Befriend Motherwell projects. The Moderator, on behalf of the Kirk Session thanked all those involved.
Solove: The Solove Open Doors initiative had been a success with about 50/60 people visiting each venue. Our congregation had also been involved in picking up litter in the Forgewood area and this had been much appreciated by the local community. Teams from other churches helped the elderly by doing odd jobs, gardening etc. also free bag packing in a local supermarket. The Solove initiative would finish with a fun Day on Saturday 15 June 2013.
Crawford Moffat: A letter of thanks was received from Crawford Moffat (Session Clerk) thanking the Kirk Session for all the kind wishes, thoughts, cards and especially the prayers he had received during his short stay in hospital. He thanked the Moderator for his visit and the gift of flowers on behalf of the Kirk Session. We are blessed in Dalziel St Andrew’s with such a caring and devoted minister.
6
Roy and Linda Simpson: A letter was received from Roy and Linda Simpson thanking the Kirk Session for the many expressions of Christian love afforded to them during the last few weeks. They especially thanked the Minister and Session Clerk for their concern and devotion to duty. The beautiful floral arrangement they received from the Kirk Session was much appreciated.
Peter Hastie: A letter was received from Peter Hastie thanking all in the congregation for the flowers and cards received after his stay in hospital.
Christian Aid / Scottish Bible Society: letters of thanks were received from Christian Aid and the Scottish Bible Society for the generous donation of £594.14 each. This was the proceeds from the Holy Week collections. June Communion: A total of 279 cards were received, 265 at the morning and 14 at the evening services. For comparison there was no Communion held in June 2012 however in June 2011 a total of 290 were recorded. The Session Clerk was pleased that he had been able to attend the morning Communion service. He thanked the participating Elders for the reverent and dignified manner in which the service was conducted and also Iain Guthrie and Janette Black for the preparation of the Elements. He also thanked the Moderator for conducting such an uplifting service.
Makeover Project: Estimates received for the upgrade of the kitchen and toilets were over budget. A revised figure was being sought prior to the mid June start. The project would take about 6 to 8 weeks to complete. The Kirk Session noted the progress being made in the various phases of the Makeover Project – Forward for Jesus.
Retiral Offerings: The Kirk Session agreed that the retiral offering for next session would be as follows: • Harvest Thanks Giving -‐ Tearfund.
7
• October Communion -‐ Sightsavers International. • Remembrance Sunday -‐ Poppy Scotland. • Christmas Eve -‐ Tabeetha School. • February Communion -‐ St Andrew’s Hospice. • Easter Sunday -‐ Waterforall. • June Communion – Well Hall Home.
General Assembly 2013: The Moderator informed the Kirk Session that he had been surprised to receive an offer of a late place as a Commissioner to the 2013 General Assembly. The press had tended to focus on the Monday debate on Same Sex Relationships and Ministry and although this was not the whole Assembly it is important to make clear what was said. Some Elders throughout the church are talking of resignation, this was disappointing as a majority accepted the compromise decision ‘Affirm the Church’s historic and current doctrine and practice in relation to human sexuality and nonetheless permit those Kirk Sessions who wish to depart from that doctrine and practice to do so’. It would be two years before a final decision was taken. The Legal Questions Committee has been instructed to bring an overture to the general Assembly of 2014, which enacts the principles of the above. If accepted this would be passed down to Presbyteries under the Barrier Act. The Moderator stated that he had been encouraged to carry on with his ministry; the discussions should not be about personalities but the following of Jesus. The Moderator would be attending a meeting with a group of ministers who would discuss how best to hold the Church of Scotland together and he would keep Kirk Session informed. Organ Recital and Flower Festival: The Social Committee had proposed that an Organ Recital and Flower Festival would be held on the weekend of 7/8 September on the completion of the organ restoration. All were being encouraged to take part in this by providing a floral arrangement for one of the sanctuary windows. The Kirk Session agreed to take part by decorating a window.

Kirk Session Meeting September 2013
The Kirk Session met on Thursday 12 September 2013. There were 42 elders present, with 9 apologies. Organ Recital and Flower Festival: Held on Saturday 7 September was very well attended with large numbers of visitors from outwith our parish. The Moderator thanked all who had taken part and worked so hard to make the day such a success. Thanks had been received from care and retirement homes that were the recipients of the large flower arrangements.
Mission Partner: A letter was received from our Mission Partner in Israel, Antony Short, updating the Kirk Session on Tabeetha School’s 150th anniversary celebrations and also his family’s visit to Scotland in March 2013.
Mission and Discipleship Council: A letter was received from the Church of Scotland Mission and Discipleship Council with information regarding regional events being held about inspiring and resourcing congregations. Iain Guthrie: A card was received from Iain Guthrie thanking the Kirk Session for the bouquet of flowers received at the time of his mother’s death.
Tom Douglas: A letter was received from Tom Douglas requesting leave of absence as a ruling elder within Dalziel St. Andrew’s. Tom feels he is unable to make an active contribution as an elder within the Kirk Session during the present upheaval in the Royal Mail. He would be keen to review the situation when his work situation changed. The Kirk Session agreed and asked the Session Clerk to write informing Tom of their decision.
Presbytery Report: Stephen Day reported that at September’s meeting of Hamilton Presbytery the business had been mostly procedural. Two ministers had vacated their charges namely South Wishaw and Blantyre Saint Andrew’s. October Communion: The rota for those on duty at the October 2013 Communion had been distributed. Discussions took place regarding the new procedures for serving the elements. These shall be kept under review and amended if required in future.
Makeover Report: The Kirk Session noted the progress being made in the various phases of the Makeover Project – Forward for Jesus.
Communion Tokens: These tokens were dated 1798 and 1843 and had been mounted on cards with a brief history of their use and would now be made available to the congregation. Voluntary donations could be given with the proceeds going towards funding a ‘live stream’ link with Glenview Court to enable residents to view our services on line.
10
Handbook: A copy of the Handbook for 2013-‐2014 was available for each elder.
Summer Sunday School: This had been a great success. The Moderator thanked Anne Brown the co-‐ordinator, staff and all those who had been involved in any way in making it such an enjoyable experience for all the children and young families.
Messy Church: This had been going for quite a few years now but not in the Motherwell area. It largely involves craft work and is a method of bringing families of crèche and Sunday School beginners together; consolidating these families spiritually in church by getting them to know each other and draw in friends and people who can help. Support will be required and it is proposed to hold a meeting of those interested on Sunday 22 September 2013.
Quiz Night: This had been arranged for the 26 September 2013 this would help people to relax and enjoy themselves.
Jim Paxton: The Moderator asked the Kirk Session’s permission to allow Jim Paxton, Reader in Training, to attend the Kirk Session. Since his appointment on 1 September 2013 Jim has been helping the Moderator lead worship and has been involved in some pastoral visits. The Kirk Session agreed.
Girl’s Brigade Commissioning: Norma O’Hara would be commissioned as a Girls’ Brigade officer during morning worship on Sunday 15 September. Eldership Consultation: The Session Clerk informed the Kirk Session that he had received a communication from 121 regarding Eldership
11
Review. A questionnaire for answer by the Kirk Session had been provided. The Moderator proposed that at the November Kirk Session meeting time should be set aside for elders to answer the questions in groups these would then be collated by the Moderator and the Session Clerk and the result forwarded to 121 George Street, Edinburgh. The Kirk Session agreed.
Local Church Review: An invitation had been received from the Presbytery of Hamilton to send 4 representatives from the Kirk Session to the ‘Local Church Review’ Process meeting on Tuesday 1 October 2013. The Moderator informed the Kirk Session that the ‘Local Church Review” Process was in place of the past Quinquennial Visitations. The Kirk Session nominated the Revd. Derek Hughes (Moderator) and Dr Stephen Day (Presbytery Elder) to attend along with two other elders.
Enquirers Group: This would run for the next 5 weeks with four attending and with the possibility of another two joining later.
Alterations to the Communion Role In by transference: Ian and Sandra Jackson, 55 Fenwick Drive, Hamilton ML3 7YG. (Cadzow Parish Church). Church Makeover Project “Forward for Jesus”
Update to end of October 2013 Organ: To assist keep the temperature in the sanctuary at not too low a level one of the boilers has been aligned specifically to the area and a thermostat fitted. We hope this helps over the winter months. With an annual maintenance bill for the organ scheduled for next year Janette Boyd has kindly agreed to organise another function on 4 January to help raise funds. This is very much appreciated. Next Phases: Work is now complete on upgrade of Kitchen and toilets and formation of the Baby Change Room and Cleaner’s Cupboard. Thanks for all help and support. A Lift Development Grant (£2,000) has been awarded by the Big Lottery Fund, Community Spaces. This is allowing a detailed feasibility study to be carried out in the next few months into scope for installing a lift to assist access for all to the upper floor halls. Work has started on this with the Architect Design work is complete and Building Warrant being applied for. Tenders are now being issued and a grant application will be lodged once they are returned. Roof Survey: We have known for some time that the roof needs attention with replacement lead required and major pointing works. A full survey has been carried out and tenders have been returned from 5 contractors. Applications are now being made for funding to see if we might tackle that work next year. The quinquennial survey by Presbytery is complete and reinforces the need for attention to the roof and external walls which are weathering in parts. It makes economic sense to tackle the walls work (if we can) when the scaffold is in place to address the roof work.
13
Award: Following the most encouraging receipt of the £2,000 cheque from Biffa Award work is planned to add a screen in the sanctuary; make the corridor and hall screens “live”; address some lighting issues; and improve the audio system in the small hall to assist those with hearing impairment.

Thanks to all who continue to help in fund raising. The Makeover Table and Soup and Sweet Lunch being the latest efforts. Recommendation: The Kirk Session, Congregational Board and Congregation are asked to note progress being made in the various phases of the Makeover Project – Forward for Jesus.

Church Makeover Project “Forward for Jesus”
Next Phases Since we started our Makeover Project a few years ago our Treasurer advises that we have spent over £600,000 on our property. In the latest phase we have spent over £100,000 on the kitchen and toilet upgrades; creation of the Baby Change Room and new Cleaner’s Cupboard; and installation of a new smoke detection system throughout the whole property. In addition to our own fund raising efforts (Makeover Table, events, donations, collection tins etc) we have again been indebted to most generous Grant Funders. For this phase we have received wonderful support again from Biffa Award; Environmental Key Fund; The Baird Trust; The Ferguson Bequest; The General Trustees of the Church of Scotland and The Rank Foundation. All very much appreciated. Over the past few years we have been aware of the difficulty which many people experience in reaching our upper floor halls. As we strive to hire out our halls this again becomes a problem for some user groups. We have such a fine suite of halls on the upper floor and are keen to maximise their use. Following discussion with the Lottery Fund we soon hope to lodge an application for grant support to see if we can install a lift to help all access this upper floor area. The final main expenditure area relates to the overhaul of our roof and external walls. Surveys by our Architect, and also by Presbytery Property Adviser, alert us to the need to address, on the roof, the perishing lead work, pointing of stonework; and refurbishment of the 10 ventilation stacks. Although it has been suggested that we explore installing alternatives to lead on the roof, the advice is that the other possible products have
15
a very limited life (compared to new lead) which would require the replacement of the material possibly each 15 years. Historic Scotland also favours lead retention as consistent with the Grade “B” Listed status of our buildings. Having established the rather daunting cost involved in this roof work (several hundred thousand pounds) we are advised that a good deal of the money in the contract will relate to the erection of scaffold around the building while the work is carried out. To avoid having to face scaffold costs a second time we are again advised that, while the scaffold is in place, it would be economic, if we can, to address work to the deteriorating condition of some of our stonework. The sandstone blocks are weathering quite badly in parts and will require repair at some stage. Once more approaches are being made to potential grant funders to see if we might attempt a contract next year to address these works. As always, any donations towards the cost are so much appreciated and can be sent or handed to the Treasurer. I do thank all for their continued support for this important work and for all donations and fund raising which continues to be so heartening.

Bibles for Africa
“No one can read this book without being convinced that there is Someone here at work besides mere human beings.” (J.B.Phillips) Book Aid, who have organised distribution of Bibles to developing countries advise that in September they dispatched their 300th container of Bibles, this time to India where, although there is opposition in some parts, there is a growing church. I am again asked to thank all who continue to find bibles which I can pass on and so help spread God’s Word where it is so much needed and so very much appreciated. In 2013 there has been an almost weekly bundle of bibles given to me. Thank you all so much.

Girls’ Brigade
This has been a few months of growth within our ranks due to publicity in the area by our church. All the new girls are finding friends in the Company and enjoying the weekly sessions. Many thanks to all who have supported us with donations of wool, clothing and furnishings; or by attending the Party Lite night recently.
17
The Brigaders plan to skate later this month before we visit the panto on 6th December with our Juniors. The Explorers will join with the other ten Companies in the Division for a party on 14th December, rounded off with a “special visitor.” It’s a fun filled morning for all involved. The girls and officers wish everyone a Happy Christmas and peace in the New Year.
Season’s wishes from all at 3rd Motherwell.

For a while now, I have been searching for a way to bring together the increasing number of young families we have in our congregation. I am also very keen to expand that number by reaching out to others in the wider community, making it simple for them to join us. Having come across the “Messy Church” materials (go on GOOGLE it, you know you want to!), I am convinced that this is worth trying in Motherwell and wondered if you might also be interested in some involvement?
18
We have scheduled our first Messy Church event for Sunday 15th December 2013 at 3:30pm.
It is aimed at families with children up to the age of Primary 7 and is, as the name implies, both MESSY and CHURCH! We begin informally with tea, coffee, juice, biscuits and cakes, taking time to get to know each other. This is followed by a period of crafts and games on a Christmas theme, a very brief time of relaxed, informal and totally interactive praise in the church. Finally, for those who wish to stay beyond 5:00pm a simple meal will be provided (all at no cost to you!) and a chance to speak with other folk and get to know them. If you want to come along, please email the church office with your contact details as well as an indication of how many adults and children would be in your party. For catering purposes, we would especially love to know how many wish to stay for the evening meal.
Please do come along and enjoy this innovative approach to sharing with others in fun, friendship and faith.
More information and details of how you can be involved in “Messy Church” are available through contacting either Lorna Geddes or Derek Hughes
Reachout Project
Donations of tins and packaged food are always welcome to help those less fortunate within our town. There are donation zones within the church building should you wish to contribute. All donations are very much appreciated.

Sunday School & Bible Class The Sunday School and Bible Class (SSBC) have enjoyed studying stories from The New Testament titled “People Jesus Helped”. During advent the children will again look at the wonderful story of the first Christmas. Staff Changes: Julie Graham moved from Bible Class to Beginners. Fiona Ross joins the Bible Class leaders. We give our best wishes to Fiona Currie who left the Sunday school Beginners Dept and give her our grateful thanks for her time spent working with and sharing her faith with the children. Crèche Roll: Two of our Sunday School teachers have increased the roll of the crèche. Debbie Bogle, a teacher in the Primary dept., has a new baby daughter, Lexie. Congratulations to Debbie and Richard and their beautiful baby girl who has been a regular in church on Sundays since her birth. Lesley Walker, a teacher in the Beginners dept., has also given birth to a new daughter, Claudia, a baby sister for Clara. Congratulations to Lesley and Michael on the safe arrival of their beautiful baby girl who has also been in church with us at worship. We are blessed to have so many little people as part of our church family. Offerings: Our young people are very generous throughout the year offering money to help others who are not as fortunate as themselves. Our SSBC treasurer, Elaine Geddes, sent £360 to Yorkhill Children’s hospital and £360 to The African Children’s Choir who sang in our church. What a wonderful amount of money. Thank You to everyone in SSBC for thinking of others. This year our abroad charity is KIDS Club Kampala: We were moved by Laura McCartney’s story and wanted to help. Laura was brought up in Dalziel St Andrews and was part of the Sunday School and Bible Class and worshipped here until
20
she moved to university in Dundee. Thank you Laura for inspiring us to help these children. Our home charity is Rachel House. As always the children and teachers will be very busy during the weeks leading to Christmas. Gift Service: On 1st December the children will receive a gift of a book from the church. Giving and receiving of gifts is a wonderful tradition of Christmas time as we remember the best gift of all -‐ Jesus. The children will join the church family in bringing a gift for Women’s Aid. As this is the first Sunday of Advent the church will be decorated for Christmas. The lights of the candles on the advent ring and the lights on The Christmas tree will again remind everyone of Jesus being the light of the world. Gold and Silver: Our stall at the Church Christmas Fayre will be overflowing with gold and silver gifts and decorations. Donations for the stall will be welcomed and please come and buy on Saturday 7th December at 11am in the church hall. Christmas Parties and outings: Parents will be given details of dates and arrangements beforehand. Nativity: This year we tell the Christmas story -‐ “IT’S A BABY”. The nativity will take place at 11am on Sunday 22nd December. We hope the church will be full of friends and family as we put CHRIST at the centre of our Christmas activities when the children of SSBC lead worship with the help of the church choir. Christmas Eve -‐ Early Service: Please join us in Church as we take time out of the hustle and bustle of Christmas day preparations to remember the First Christmas in this short service @ 6.30pm on Tuesday 24th December. The teachers will serve tea, coffee and juice and hot Christmas pies and shortbread in the hall at the end of the service before going home to hang up the Christmas stockings!
21
Christmas Day: All children will be most welcome to come to church and bring a Santa gift to show everyone. The centre candle will be lit on the Advent Crown as we remember the birthday of Jesus during this short service of worship. We hope to see you there. Holidays: Sundays 29th Dec and 5th Jan 2014 all departments including crèche will be on holiday.
Sunday School and Bible class resumes on 12th January. Thank you to everyone in the Church family for continued prayers for the children and teachers. Wishing everyone Christmas Joy and happiness in 2014.

Social Committee Since the last newsletter the Social Committee have been busy. The Senior Treat took place in the large hall at the end of August and the members who attended enjoyed the fellowship and catering provided by the Committee members. They were also entertained by Katy-‐Anne McGlade. This was followed by the successful Organ Recital and Flower Festival on the 7th September. Thanks must go to all the organists and the organisations for the beautiful floral arrangements which beautified the windows in the Sanctuary. A Fun night along with Curry and Carbonnara took place in the large hall on Thursday 26th September. This consisted of a Quiz run by Colin Weir (B.B. Captain) and the food prepared by the Committee. Everyone who came along enjoyed the event. The Sanctuary resounded to the sound of the Clydebank Salvation Band on Friday 25th October. Although the attendance poor the audience were treated to an excellent concert. The Christmas Fayre is being held on Saturday 7th December from 11.00am On Sunday 22nd December the Annual Christmas Tea will be held in the Large Hall after the morning service. All are welcome to come and enjoy a time of fellowship. The Social Committee wish all a very peaceful CHRISTmas and all the best for 2014.

Befriending Motherwell Befriend Motherwell is continuing to bring much needed support and company to lonely elderly residents in the town. We have reached our target for this year of 15 “matches” between Befrienders and Befriendees. Thanks to all who have volunteered and are providing this weekly outreach from our congregation. We have now moved into Group Befriending with three Groups up and running. A very exciting development but, at the same time, quite a challenge. We are already always in need of volunteers to assist in our One-‐to-‐One Befriending network and now seek helpers to assist us in our group work. It is great fun and very rewarding as we bring company into the lives of our elderly contacts. Christmas Party and some outings are planned. If you can spare just an hour each week to help in either the one-‐to-‐one Befriending or the new Group work, please do get in touch and I will gladly explain what is involved. You can contact me by calling into the church office on either Tuesday or Wednesday mornings, or by emailing: [email protected] or by telephone at 07796012462. Thanks You.

The glad tidings of great joy, ever old yet ever new. We thank you for the faith of Mary, the commitment of Joseph,
the message of the angels and the response of the shepherds -‐ the way you changed their lives that day in Bethlehem.
Living God, above all, we thank you that the glad tidings proclaimed at Bethlehem, all those years ago, is good news for us today here and
now. In his name we pray. Amen.

Can you Help the Deaf and Hard of Hearing?
How fortunate indeed are those who have good hearing. There is a very big community of people with hearing problems who are unable to benefit from the Word of the Lord spoken in the church. The Glasgow Church for the Deaf does hold local mid-‐week services around the West of Scotland in eight locations including Hamilton and East Kilbride. With our live streaming of services, and also our recorded services available on You Tube, we have a wonderful opportunity to augment our outreach work if we can arrange some signing, particularly of those sections of the service where we are unable to put written words on the screens. Prayer time and possibly Children’s Time come to mind. Those working with the deaf have indicated that Derek’s spoken word is very acceptable for lip reading and we are able, at time of sermon, to zoom in a bit closer to help a bit. Now plans are underway to see if we might arrange signing of small parts of the service and we will liaise with our friends who know all about this area of work for the Lord to see if we are indeed helping. We have several useful contacts with organisations who focus their work on the deaf. Please do pray for success as we strive to touch more lives for Jesus in this way. Can you help? Do you sign? Do you know of anyone who is able to do so? We are indebted to Rae Blagg and also to our Boys Brigade Company who are taking the lead here.

If you think you can help do let us know. Thank you.

Pipe Organ Many thanks to Eric Geddes, Andrew Stephen, Sandy Sharpe and David Hamilton who were our guest organists at our very successful organ recital in September. The event was made extra special by the input of so many to the wonderful Flower Festival with the floral arrangements distributed around the town afterwards to bring added enjoyment to so many. Thanks also to the Social Committee who had to work so very hard to cope with the fine attendance throughout the day. A quite unexpected but welcome bonus were the donations which brought along over £500 for funds. Well done and thanks to everyone involved.

Clogged Pens
28
I shook it. I knocked it gently, sideways on the top of the desk. I licked a piece of paper and wrote carefully in the moisture (I can’t tell why this works but it usually does). I repeated each procedure without results. Then I carried the pen to the sink, took it apart, and carefully flushed out the point. Refilling it, I sat down to write. How like me, I thought with exasperation. I have mugs full of pens on my desk: ballpoints, felt tips, ink pens – even pencils. But for very fine writing, such as notes in the margin of my Bible, I need a Rapidograph pen. This pen has a needle-‐fine point and uses India ink, which will not seep through or smear on the thin India paper. How often when God has needed me I have been clogged up (too busy or inundated with things – the necessary giving way to the unnecessary). Or I have gone dry. When that happens, I need a “shaking up”, or I need special cleansing. And I need to be filled and refilled and filled again. There have been times when God has patiently and carefully done just that. There have been other times when He has had to pass me over and pick up a pen that was usable. But unlike a pen, I do have a choice. I can decide whether or not I remain usable.

I would like to thank the congregation for sending my Mum flowers on her Birthday. My Mum (Betty Colquhoun) is a resident of Thornhill Home in Wishaw. She was 85 on October 28th and was able to come to my home for her Birthday tea with friends and family. She is doing well and enjoys keeping up with church news. Thanks again.

Silent Night
The little church in the Austrian village of Oberndorf was full for the traditional Christmas Eve service. There was a special surprise in store.

The vicar, Joseph Mohr, had written a new carol for the occasion. He had given the completed manuscript to the organist in good time for him. But now the organist, Franz Gruber, was in despair. The organ had broken down and he could not play the tune. Undeterred, the vicar suggested that he and Herr Gruber should sing the carol as a duet. In due course, the organ was repaired, and as a test piece during and after the repairs, Herr Gruber played the new tune. The organ repairer was delighted with the new carol, and when he returned to his own village of Zillerthal, he sang and played it there. A glove-‐maker living in Zillerthal had four daughters who used to accompany their father on his glove-‐selling travels and give concerts in the towns and villages they visited. These girls sang this carol, Silent Night, to every available audience. So the carol, which might have lain unknown in the church cupboard at Oberndorf became a firm favourite all over Austria. Soon it was translated into other languages and this year, on Christmas Eve, more than a century and a half later, it will be sung all over the world.
