Daegan Banga Receives The Duke of Edinburg’s Award
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
The Award is a non-competitive pro-
gramme in which participants set and
achieve personal goals for community
service, skills, fitness, and adventure. It is a
great way to explore new interests and try new
challenges you might not have done otherwise,
and even stretch your 'comfort zone'. The Award
is open to all young Canadians age 14 yrs to 24
years old, and has 3 levels:
Bronze (for ages 14 years and up)
Silver (for ages 15 years and up)
Gold (for ages 16 years and up)
Participants can expect to spend at least 6
months completing the Bronze level, and a year
or more on Silver or Gold, depending on
whether the participant registers as a direct
entry or continues from one level to the next.
You must complete your Award before your
25th birthday.
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award challenges you
to set and accomplish personal goals in 4 or 5
different areas:
Service
Skill
Physical Recreation
Adventurous Journey
Residential Project (for Gold Level only)
These components may be completed simultane-
ously or one at a time. As a result, the total
amount of time required to complete The Award
will be slightly different for each participant.
Award achievers receive a pin and certificate
to mark their achievements, and may be able to
attend a ceremony within their Province or Ter-
ritory (depending on Award level and ceremony
availability). Gold Award ceremonies are only
presided over by the Governor-General of
Canada, or by a member of the Royal Family.

EDITORIALHoly crap.... I can’t believe I am making another
December issue already. The past year has gone
by way faster than the previous ones. Again I
have not gotten everything done that I wanted
and now I am also faced with getting my Christ-
mas shopping done in the next few weeks.
Normally this can be a tremendous chore that I
often find myself doing the day before Christmas.
Not unlike how I am writing this editorial about
one hour before this issue goes to print !!
But this year I have found an easy way out which
I will share with you.
You can wrap up most of your Christmas shop-
ping this weekend right here at home.
Starting on Friday, you can pop into the
Christmas Tea & Bake Sale at the Delisle Senior
Centre. For those of you that are looking to get a
small gift for yours truely, a tasty treat from
there would fit right in with my Christmas
wishes.
Then on Friday night (or Saturday) you can
drop into the annual Kim McFarlane Art Show &
Sale at the former Feed & Farm Store in
Vanscoy, where you will find amazing, one of a
kind, hand painted decorative and functional
pieces.
Saturday you will have an opportunity to take
in the Gift Gallery at the Delisle Town Hall
where you will find a diverse array of gift ideas
from many of the local home based business that
make up the Delisle & District Women in Busi-
ness organizations.
And for that very special gift, you can probably
find just the right thing at the Craft Sale in the
Pike Lake Community Hall on Sunday.
We are fortunate that we have the talented indi-
viduals and hard working business people in our
community that we do. They are all great sup-
porters of the RM Review, and for that I am very
grateful. You will find a Christmas Greeting from
many of them in the pull-out Christmas Section
of this issue. I hope you will give each of them a
chance to help you find that ‘perfect gift’.
Merry Christmas !

SCHOOL REPORTSPIKE LAKE PRESCHOOL DELISLE COMPOSITE SCHOOL
PIKE LAKE SCHOOL
Here we are at the beginning of Decem-
ber! This first part of preschool has just
flown by. The students have improved
so much in just this short period of time.
The 3-year olds are doing a great job
with their listening skills, following rou-
tine, and learning to play together. The
4-year olds have improved so much with
printing their names. I think at this
time, there are only 2 or 3 who still need
to use their name plate; the others can
print their name from memory!
November has been a good month at pre-
school. We had pictures taken by Mc-
Master's Photography and the day went
really well. Rose can coax a smile from
anyone! That same day, we also started
making crafts to sell at the craft sale in
Pike Lake on December 7th at the hall.
We started practicing for our Christmas
concert and both groups are doing well
with that. They both also spent a day
learning about the number 3, with the 3-
year olds braiding pipe cleaners together
to make bracelets and the 4-year olds
drawing 3 3's and gluing items on them.
We celebrated the colour brown making
porcupines and beaver masks. There
was lots of brown clothing to see and lots
of brown snacks to enjoy! We will end
the month with our annual Pajama Day.
The 4-year olds started a health unit in
November, learning about germs, how to
take care of their teeth, and which foods
are healthy. We will finish that up in
December talking about emotions.
In December we will celebrate the colour
red and the number 4. The 4-year olds
will also finish up our health unit, learn
about opposites, and spend a day talking
about Christmas. We will once again be
joining Pike Lake School for their
Christmas concert on the morning of
Wednesday, December 17th and having
our own Christmas Party on the morn-
ing of Thursday, December 18th.
I would like to extend a special thank
you to Pike Lake School for all they do
for our preschool, from sharing their out-
door toys to bringing over Scholastic
packages to inviting us to join in on spe-
cial days like the Halloween Party or
Christmas Concert. Thank you from all
of us at Pike Lake Preschool!
I hope you have a wonderful Christmas
season and a very Happy New Year!

Parent-teachers were recently held at
Pike Lake School. Thank you to our staff
and students for their efforts as well as
our parents for their tremendous sup-
port. When we all work together, we
create a successful environment for our
students. Pike Lake School is truly
blessed to have such a wonderful and
supportive learning community.
Pike Lake School is always looking to-
wards the future and is excited to share
information about the rich opportunities
for learning provided by our School! Do
you have a child who will be starting
Kindergarten in the fall 2015 of 2016 or
within the next five years? Register now
to have the opportunity to tour your
child’s new school and meet the Kinder-
garten teacher. Kindergarten is a special
place where children are encouraged to
be the best they can be in a welcoming
and dynamic learning environment. Nu-
merous opportunities are provided to en-
courage children to create, explore and
enjoy themselves while developing skills
in language, math, art, science, music
and physical education. Children must
be five years of age by December 31,
2016 to start Kindergarten in September
2015. For more information, drop by
Pike Lake School or give us a call at
(306)668-4808.
As a school we would like to take this op-
portunity to extend a special thank you
to our School Community Council and to
everyone for their support of the council
fundraisers. Recently, our council
passed motions to help support the de-
velopment of an outdoor classroom, initi-
ate a “One Book, One School” reading
program to kick off the 2015 school year,
and to purchase a new Smart Board for
our Grade One/Two classroom. That’s
fantastic! Also, a big thank you goes out
to all of the parents who will be donating
their time for our Hot Meal program and
items for the Christmas Gift Basket. The
funds raised from the Christmas Gift
Basket will go directly towards our new
outdoor classroom. The volunteerism
and generosity in our community is
amazing and it helps to make Pike Lake
School the great place that it is.
The snow and cold means it is a sign
that Christmas is quickly approaching!
Indeed the students at Pike Lake School
are getting excited about our upcoming
Christmas concert production entitled,
“A Bear-y Merry Holiday.” This year’s
concert will be performed by the Pike
Lake Students on Thursday, December
18th at 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Please
mark this date and these times on your
calendar so as not to miss this school
tradition for one and all.
We wish you all a very Merry Christmas
and Joyous New Year!
Our school has been focussing on many
components of literacy including ‘Wise,
Active Reading”. What is a wise, active
reader? A wise, active reader is a person
of any age who gets into a book and en-
joys it! Wise, Active readers can be found
everywhere! In a library, classroom, bed-
room, hallway, kitchen, or even in a ve-
hicle! These readers can read with
expression, can predict what will happen
in a book, and can visualize what they
are reading. Wise, active readers think
about what they read while they are
reading, and may even try different
kinds of books. These wise readers know
how to pick a ‘Just Right’ book, using a
variety of reading strategies, and has
reading stamina. Ask your child how
they are practicing to become a wise, ac-
tive reader!

VANSCOY SCHOOL
The month of November has been a busy
one at Vanscoy School. Students have
been participating in a number of events
such as attending WE Day in Saskatoon,
raising money for the UNICEF cam-
paign, collecting donations for the Re-
membrance Day Poppy Campaign as
well as getting ready for the up-coming
Christmas season.
We have wrapped up our UNICEF cam-
paign for 2014. Students emptied their
piggybanks, canvassed Vanscoy and
brought in personal donations. The
Grade 6 student leaders of the school-
wide UNICEF campaign were Marc
Tim, Sam Thompson, Jade Jimmy,
Daylin Deitsch, Brady Irvine, Abby
Orth, Jordyn Milnes, Talisa Gibbard,
and Emma Robert. They organized pop-
corn and hot chocolate sales. The Grade
1 class sold lemonade raising $83.00.
The Grade 4 class baked and sold cook-
ies raising $183.15. The Grade 7 / 8 class
created a Halloween Haunted House
that raised $162.50. As a result of the
campaign we raised our highest total
ever, $1,429.00! Thanks to our students,
their families, school staff and the com-
munity for their efforts. Funds collected
will go towards supporting children in
areas such as West Africa, Haiti, Syria
and Pakistan. The money will help to
pay for school supplies, bikes, tents,
clean water and health care needs.
The school Remembrance Day service
was meaningful and well attended. Stu-
dents performed well and honoured
guests assisted us with the Colour Pa-
rade and speeches. Poppy sales totaling
$325 was raised and will be sent to the
Royal Canadian Legion at Delisle.
Thank you all.
Staff at Vanscoy School have an oppor-
tunity to participate for the Dress Down
for Diabetes campaign. Staff participat-
ing have been paying $5 each to dress-
down on Fridays in November.
Our school and Vanscoy Village are
seeking local sponsors for the Disc Golf
playing field that will be installed dur-
ing the spring of 2015. Location will be
on the Village and school grounds. For a
$500 donation (or more), sponsors will
see their business advertised at one of
the holes. If you would like to be a part
of this great joint endeavor or have ques-
tions, please call Mr. Derdall, school
principal at 306-668-2056.
During the month of December, there
will be a number of activities and events
at the school. The School Christmas
Concert: Grades K-5 and the Glee Club
will have two performances on Tuesday
December 16 at 9:30 and the second per-
formance at 7:00pm. On Thursday De-
cember 18th the Glee Club will be going
on tour and will perform at the Lawson
Mall at 11:30am.
Student Secret Santa, which takes place
on Friday, December 12 involves stu-
dents purchasing Christmas gifts se-
cretly for their family during school time
in our library store. The purchases are
even wrapped at the school (no peeking).
The parents just need to send a bit of
money and a shopping list with their
child. Younger grades have ‘helpers’ to
guide them throughout the ‘store’. No
parents please. This is all top secret.
Most items cost between 50₵ to $10.00.Of course, there is no obligation for your
child to participate.
We appreciate the time and effort that
our Room Parents put into running this
program – it is a lot of work. They are
great volunteers!! Thank you!

Songs of the Season
Santa claus is
coming to townYou better watch out
You better not cry
Better not pout
I’m telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town
He’s making a list,
And checking it twice;
Gonna find out who’s naughty and nice.
Santa Claus is coming to town
He sees you when you’re sleeping
He knows when you’re awake
He knows if you’ve been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake!
O! You better watch out!
You better not cry.
Better not pout, I’m telling you why.
Santa Claus is coming to town.
Santa Claus is coming to town.
Frosty the SnowmanFrosty the snowman
Was a jolly happy soul,
With a corn cob pipe and a button nose
And two eyes made out of coal;
Frosty the snowman, is a fairy tale they say,
He was made of snow but the children know
How he came to life one day.
There must have been some magic
In that old silk hat they found
‘Cause when they put it on his head
He began to dance around
Oh, Frosty the snowman
Knew the sun was hot that day,
So he said, ‘Let’s run and we’ll have some fun
Now before I melt away!’
Down to the village, with a broomstick in his
hand,
Running here and there all around the square,
Saying, ‘Catch me if you can!’
He led them down the streets of town
Right to the traffic cop,
And he only paused a moment
When he heard him holler ‘Stop!’
For Frosty the snowman had to hurry on his
way.
But he waved goodbye, saying, ‘Don’t you cry
I’ll be back again same day!’
Thumpety thump thump, (2)
Look at Frosty go,
thumpety thump thump, (2)
Over the hills of snow
Silent nightSilent night, Holy night
All is calm, all is bright,
‘Round you virgin mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild.
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night, Holy night
Shepherds quake, at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heavenly hosts sing,”Alleluia!”
Christ the Savior is born
Christ the savior is born.
Silent night, Holy night
Son of God, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus Lord at Thy birth
Jesus Lord at Thy birth.
gentle Marylaid her child
Gentle Mary laid her child
lowly in a manger,
There he lay, the undefiled,
to the world a stranger.
Such a babe in such a place, can he be
the Saviour?
Ask the saved of all the race,
Who have found his favor
Angels sang about his birth,
wise ;men sought and found him;
heaven’s star shone brightly forth,
glory all around him.
Shepherds saw the wondrous sight,
heard the angels singing;
all the plains were lit that night,
all the hills were ringing.
Gentle Mary laid her child
lowly in a manger;
he is still the undefiled,
but no more a stranger.
Son of God of humble birth,
beautiful the story;
praise his name in all the earth;
hail the King of glory!
i Saw Mommy
kissing Santa clausI saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus
Underneath the mistletoe last night.
She didn’t see me creep
down the stairs to have a peep;
She thought that I was tucked
up in my bedroom fast asleep.
Then, I saw Mommy tickle Santa Claus
Underneath his beard so snowy white;
Oh, what a laugh it would have been
If Daddy had only seen
Mommy kissing Santa Claus last night.
Rudolph the
Red-nosed ReindeerYou know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer
and Vixen
Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen
But do you recall
The most famous reindeer of all?
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Had a very shiny nose
And if you ever saw it
You would even say it glows
All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names
They never let poor Rudolph
Join in any reindeer games
Then one foggy Christmas Eve
Santa came to say,
“Rudolph with your nose so bright
Won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?”
Then how the reindeer loved him
As they shouted out with glee
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
You’ll go down in history!
O holy nightO holy night!
The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of the dear Saviour’s birth.
Long lay the world
In sin and error pining
‘Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious
morn,
Fall on your knees!
O hear the angels voices!
O night, divine!
O night, when Christ was born,
O night, divine!
O night, O night divine!
White christmasI’m dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones we used to know
Where the tree tops glisten
And children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow
I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white
All i Want For christmas
is My two Front teethEvery body stops
and stares at me
These two teeth are
gone as you can see
I don’t know just who
to blame for this catastrophe!
But my one wish on Christmas Eve
is as plain as it can be!
All I want for Christmas
is my two front teeth,
my two front teeth,
see my two front teeth!
Gee, if I could only
have my two front teeth,
then I could with you
“Merry Christmas.”
It seems so long since I could say,
“Sister Susie sitting on a thistle!”
Gosh oh gee, how happy I’d be,
if I could only whistle (thhhh)
All I want for Christmas
is my two front teeth,
my two front teeth,
see my two front teeth.
Gee, if I could only
have my two front teeth,
then I could wish you
“Merry Christmas!”
Angels We have
heard on highAngels we have heard on high,
Sweetly singing o’er the plains:
And the mountains in reply
echoing their joyous strains.
Refrain
Glo-ria in excelsis D-eo,
Glo-ria, in excelsis D-eo.
Shepherds, why this jubilee?
Why you joyous songs prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be
Which inspire your heav’nly song?
Refrain
Come to Bethlehem, and see
Him whose birth the angels sing;
Come, adore on bended knee,
Christ, the Lord, our new-born King.

Away in a MangerAway in a manger, no crib for a bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head.
The stars in the sky looked down where He lay,
The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.
The cattle are lowing, the Baby awakes,
But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes.
I love Thee, Lord Jesus; look down from the
sky,
And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh.
Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask you to stay
close by me forever, and love me, I pray.
Bless all the dear children in your tender care,
and fit us for heaven, to live with you there.
let it SnowOh, the weather outside is frightful
But the fire is so delightful
and since we’ve no place to go,
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
We finally kiss goodnight
How I hate going out in the storm
But if you’d really hold me tight,
all the way home I’d be warm
the fire is slowly dying,
And my dear, we’re still goodbyeing
But as long as you love me so,
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

O little town
of BethlehemO little town of Bethlehem
How still we sell thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by.
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting Light
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight.
For Christ is born of Mary,
And gathered all above,
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wondering love.
O morning stars, together
Proclaim the holy birth!
And praises sing to God the King,
And peace to men on earth.
How silently, how silently,
the wondrous gift is giv’n!
So God imparts to human hearts
The blessings of His heav’n.
No ear may hear His coming,
But in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive Him
still,
The dear Christ enters in.
O holy Child of Bethlehem!
Descend to us, we pray;
Cast out our sin, and enter in,
Be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell;
O come to us, abide with us,
Our Lord Emmanuel!
Silver BellsCity sidewalks, busy sidewalks,
Dressed in holiday style,
In the air there’s a feeling of Christmas;
Children laughing, People passing,
Meeting smile after smile,
And on every street corner you hear:
Refrain
Silver Bells, silver bells,
It’s Christmas time in the city,
Ring-a-ling, hear them ring,
Soon it will be Christmas Day.
Strings of street lights, even stoplights
Blink a bright red and green,
As the shoppers rush home with their treasures,
Hear the snow crunch, see the kids bunch,
This is Santa’s big scene,
And above all the bustle you hear:
Refrain
have yourself a Merry
little christmasHave yourself a merry little Christ-
mas,
Let your heart be light,
From now on, our troubles will be
out of sight.
Have yourself a merry little Christ-
mas,
Make the Yuletide gay,
From now on, our troubles will be
miles away.
Here we are as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore,
Faithful friends who are dear to us,
Gather near to us once more.
Through the years we all will be to-
gether,
If the Fates allow,
Hang a shining star upon the high-
est bough,
And have yourself a merry little
Christmas now.
Jingle BellsDashing through the snow
In a one horse open sleigh
O'er the fields we go
Laughing all the way
Bells on bob tails ring
Making spirits bright
What fun it is to laugh and sing
A sleighing song tonight
Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh
A day or two ago
I thought I'd take a ride
And soon Miss Fanny Bright
Was seated by my side
The horse was lean and lank
Misfortune seemed his lot
We got into a drifted bank
And then we got upsot
Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh yeah
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh

Midnight clearIt came upon a midnight clear,
That glorious song of old,
From angels bending near the earth,
To touch their harps of gold
“Peace on the earth, good will to men
From heav’n’s all gracious King,”
The world in solemn stillness lay
To hear the angels sing.
Still thro’ the cloven skies they come,
With peaceful wings unfurled;
And still their heav’nly music floats
O’re all the weary world;
Above its sad and lowly plains
They bend on hov’ring wing,
And ever o’er its Babel sound
The blessed angels sing.
O ye beneath life’s crushing load,
Whose forms are bending low,
Who toil along the climbing way
With painful steps and slow;
Look now, for glad and golden hours
Come swiftly on the wing;
Oh rest beside the weary road
And hear the angels sing.
For lo! the days are hast’ning on,
By prophets seen of old,
When with the ever circling years
Shall come the time foretold,
When the new heav’n and earth shall own
The Prince of Peace their King,
And the whole world send back the son
Which now the angels sing.
Songs of the Season
chestnuts Roasting
on an Open FireChestnuts roasting on an open fire,
Jack Frost nipping on your nose,
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir,
And folks dressed up like Eskimos.
Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe,
Help to make the season bright.
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow,
Will find it hard to sleep tonight.
They know that Santa's on his way;
He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his
sleigh.
And every mother's child is going to spy,
To see if reindeer really know how to fly.
And so I'm offering this simple phrase,
To kids from one to ninety-two,
Although its been said many times, many ways,
A very Merry Christmas to you

He stood alone outside, beside the brown, empty wooden
bird house. Soft, crystal-like snowflakes fell on the snow-
man’s brown, leather top hat. His light brown, red polka
dot sewn scarf, had fluffy white flakes covering it. A
brown little bird landed on his hand, and he wasn’t alone
anymore.
Bright yellow stars floated in the sky, as snow continued to
fall. A red and green stocking hung from his other hand,
and filled with snow. His carrot nose, and his button belly,
covered with snow, started to freeze. That’s when he real-
ized, that he was a snowman.

As I walk through the forest I see a dim light
coming through the trees. As I walk out, I
see an old cozy cabin with the porch light on.
I wade through the smoothly flowing creek
and walk onto the porch. I look in the dis-
tance and see the rolling mountain tops with
dark brown geese flying overhead. The creek
still flows for miles. I walk into the warm
cabin and smell a strong fragrance of warm
baking and nice gingerbread houses. It
smells just like heaven. Then I roll into the
bedroom and curl up in a soft old blanket
that smells like pizza. I doze off and dream
of Christmas. When I wake up the sun is just
rising and I feel refreshed and go outside on
a journey somewhere else.

Five ducks of many colours in the green to yellow
grassed nest, with holly hidden behind. Bright or-
ange feet and bright yellow beaks, quiet as can be.
Sitting, laying, standing, watching for the next
move. Beautiful bleach white collars around their
necks make them look as if they are ready for a ball.
Colours of dark brown fills the chest and back of the
mallards. The beautiful true green heads make their
glossy brown and black eyes stand out wonderfully.
A cream colour of feathers goes in a circle around
their bodies. Little specks of sparkly snowflakes fall
on their backs making their feathers shine even more
brightly.

After a busy day of preparing for
Christmas, Kitty curled up in the living
room, by the tree, in the armchair with
her Teddy Bear. As she dozes off to
sleep, Kitty and Teddy dream about all
the things they want for Christmas.
Kitty dreams about toy mice, fish and
yarn. Teddy dreams about honey, gin-
gerbread and pears. Together they
dream about candy, bells, candy canes,
and trumpets. As they slowly begin to
wake up they are filled with warmth
and cheer. When they wake curled up
together beside the glowing Christmas
tree they believe their wishes will come
true.

Down in the lane, dozens of
sheep walking towards them. The
man and his dog leading the
sheep from the back. All the trees
leaves have turned and fallen.
The sunsets with a glowing or-
ange. The first snow has fallen.
But he laid cold in his room at his
auntie’s house. He couldn’t sleep.
He was excited for tomorrow. It
was Christmas. He starts to won-
der if Santa Claus would ever
come. He looked out the window,
and there he saw a man bearing a
Christmas tree and toy bag. He
had seen the fluffy white beard
and red suit. It was Santa.

The little girls cried in joy as she saw the blanket of snow cov-
ering the ground. She ran around the house throwing some odds
and ends into a bag. The girl quickly pulled on her snow gear,
her woollen cap and gloves, and finally her pink boots with the
fluffy white fur inside. She slung the bag over her shoulder, al-
most falling over from the weight. Heading outside her feet
sinking into the blindingly white snow. It was still early so no
one else was out on her street. A light snowfall had started. The
little girl decided to make a snowman. First she rolled the big
ball straining against the weight. Then she rolled a middle sized
ball. She gasped and ground trying to get it on top of the bottom
ball. Finally with one last push the snowballs settled. Finishing
the last ball and throwing it up, she grabbed the bag and
dumped her collection out. There was a red hat, a handful of
buttons, and a lopsided carrot. She moved around the snowman
quickly and threw her ingredients on the man of snow. Stepping
back to view her work she sighed in satisfaction, picked up her
empty bag and headed inside to the smell of a warm breakfast.

I could feel the wind against me
while riding in the carriage. My
favorite horse Ralph was running
really fast. I was on my way back
to my grandmas for lunch. I ar-
rived at my grandmas, walked in-
side and smelled the fresh chili.
My grandma made the best
meals. I was there because my
parents were away. It was Christ-
mas eve and there were presents
for me under the tree. I slowly
walked over and peeked through
one of them. I sat in the hot cozy
couch in the living room with my
burning cup of coffee. The tree
was all decorated with lights all
around it. There were presents
wrapped up on a plaid red and
black blanket. I could feel the
heat from the red hot fire. I could
smell the coffee rising to my
nose. I had Christmas music
playing very loudly. I just saw all
the beautiful red and black deco-
rations. I was very pleased.

The birds outside my window are chirping their sweet song. I
wake to the sound of them every morning. I makes me feel safe
and secure. They’re so cute. They look like little pompoms. The
little black tufts on their heads keep them warm and cozy when
the temperature drops below zero and the crisp air targets any
bare skin. They stay warm no matter what with their cheerful
yellow chests. I love the birds in the winter. It gives a sense of
life when the land around is dead. I wake to the smell of fresh
Christmas baking wafting through the air. It’s Christmas Eve
today! All through the day my heart was racing. As the sun set I
was just quivering with excitement. My mom came into my
room and told me to put my coat on. We walked out the door
and heard the carollers, they sound amazing! We stood there in
the square listening to all the Christmas songs I grew up with
sung perfectly.
By Jenna
The snow lightly fell on the ground around
me, the cold winter air nipped at my skin. The
muffled clop of the horses’ hooves against the
snow covered ground. The soft clatter of the
father and his son reached my ears. The lush
green tree contrasted against the blue and red
of their clothes. The sled slid across the
ground with a slight shhh sound as it com-
pressed the snow below it. Some of the trees
around us were bare of leaves, but the snow
covered the otherwise boring branches. The
others were still green and sharp. The house
loomed ahead promising warmth and shelter
from the cold breeze. Our new Christmas tree
was finally home.
By Josh
I pick my feet up and stand tall. I
take my father’s hand and we
step onto the ice. He’s a bit wob-
bly at first and we almost tumble
over. Children laugh as they pass
us by and my cheeks grow warm.
He tells me to go have fun. I have
many skating skills and I want to
try them out. I kick off and race
around the ice. I glide across the
ice and I feel at home. This is my
natural habitat. The building
lights up the park so bright that I
forget the sun has already gone
down. The horse carriage passes
by with a happy couple. I turn
around to see my father smiling
brightly at me. This is a perfect
Christmas already.
By Rhys
White, as far as you could see, all was white. The
bench in the park was sprinkled with snow and un-
touched by people. The only disturbances in this win-
terland of a park was the whistling of the wind and the
tweeting of a lonely bright red cardinal with black
wings. The cardinal watched as the snow fell soft and
silently with nobody to disturb the perfect scenery. The
light from the street lamp left the park in total bright-
ness and so the snowflakes were illuminated like stars
in the sky. Glossy white snow covered the ground and
frosted the trees. In the far distance the imagery was
like a perfect mirror of the winterland all around. This
perfect winter wonderland was all but untouched.
By Damon
The green pine tree stood
proudly in the Yuzik family
living room. Its thick
branches popping out of the
trunk full of green bitter
smelling needles that cov-
ered the tree and the floor
around it. Red garland
wrapped around the tree,
hanging on the branches.
Christmas balls of all
colours dot the tree with
colour and life. Bells of all
sorts of shape and sizes
hang from the branches
chiming their sweet songs.
Stars, flowers, bows and
candy canes, are pops of
light and colour against the
dark green evergreen. Toys
for boys and girls cover the
ground under the tree, a
China doll with bright red
lips and a pretty pink lace
dress, a French horn shin-
ing in the lights of the tree,
a black toy train waiting to
be played with, and last of
all the tree is topped with a
big shiny star. You can
smell the Christmas cheer
in the air.

Pipe Cleaner
Snowflake
You will need:
2 silver pipecleaners
3 blue pipecleaners
Instructions:
Cut the two silver pipe cleaners in half. Put one piece aside
so you have 3. Twist these three pieces together in the centre
so that you have a shape with six points (look at the photo
above for help with this).
Cut the blue pipe cleaners in half and then in half again. You
will have 12 pieces. Twist these on to the silver base to deco-
rate your snowflake.
If you want to hang your snowflake, take the piece of silver
pipe cleaner you put aside, fold in half and twist the ends to
one of the snowflake points to make a loop
Snowman Puzzle
Harvest is over. The
grain is in the bin.
The cattle are
home from the pasture.
Now is the time to start
thinking about next year.
Do those next year plans
include seeding some
cropland into forages? If
so here are a couple of
things to consider.
Firstly some species of
forages are in short sup-
ply. So once you have de-
cided what to seed book
your seed supplies. If you
need help deciding what
to seed, contact your local
Regional Forage Special-
ist. The forages species
you seed will depend on
factors like; what you
plan to use the forage for -
hay or pasture, what sea-
son you plan to use it -
spring, summer or fall
and what type of soil you
are seeding into - sand,
clay or saline soil.
Secondly if the land is in
annual crop and can be
deemed to be high risk for
erosion or prone to salin-
ity then there is a pro-
gram that helps with the
seeding cost. Under the
Farm Stewardship Pro-
gram of Growing Forward
II producers can access
cost-shared funding to
seed high risk erodible
and saline cultivated land
to forage. This funding is
through the Protecting
High Risk Erodible and
Saline Soils Beneficial
Management Practice
under the Land Manage-
ment BMP’s. To qualify,
producers must own or
control a minimum of 320
acres of farmland in
Saskatchewan and earn a
minimum of $35,000.00
gross farm income in
Saskatchewan. The fund-
ing covers 50% of seed
costs (based on a maxi-
mum seed cost of
$35.00/acre) and estab-
lishment costs (up to a
maximum of $35.00/acre)
up to a maximum of
$5,000.00. Eligible pro-
ducers can apply through
their local Agri-Environ-

The land being seeded
must have been in annual
crop for two years prior to
seeding to forage. The
land must be at risk of
erosion due to factors like
coarse or moderately
coarse textures (sandy
soil) or steep slopes. Land
which is prone to salinity
can also qualify for forage
seeding funding. Forage
seed must be certified or
Common # 1 with no pro-
hibited or noxious weeds
designated under The
Weed Control Act
(Saskatchewan). The for-
age mix must include
some creeping rooted
grass species. The forage
mix must not include cer-
tain Invasive species. For
help to make up the for-
age seed mix that suits
your site and qualifies for
this program contact your
local Regional Forage
Specialist.
Another forage seeding
program is the Native
Plant Establishment
BMP. If you want to seed
land to forage using na-
tive forages you can get
funding to help with this
seeding cost. Funding
levels are still 50% of eli-
gible costs up to a maxi-
mum seed cost of
$100.00/acre (native seed
costs are higher) and es-
tablishment costs of
$35.00/acre up to a maxi-
mum cap of $10,000. Eli-
gibility requirements are
similar to the
high risk
erodible BMP.
This project
must be pre-
approved by

cialist before
starting the
project.

We have just gone through another season of
crisis in the grain transportation system. The
tragedy of $8 billion loss because we couldn’t
get our grain to port in a timely manner when prices
were strong is a blot-on-the margin for the government
and main line railways alike. It is not like this situa-
tion developed suddenly so that capacity problems were
unexpectedly upon us. No, we knew for decades that
our rail system was inadequate for our increasing ex-
port industries. And now we are well aware that our
grain production in total will be double the current
level so action is a critical issue.
Many may believe the excuses of the railroads but that
would be the wrong response. The CPR is leasing
rolling stock and trimming its infrastructure in the
best rules of economics, while the CNR stands back and
rubs it’s hands in sympathy as it rolls in profits but
neglects preparing for the future.
The government makes weak rules that make the sys-
tem more unattractive to the railways while stating
with straight faces that they are the farmer’s friend.
What balderdash we have to suffer with no forward
planning in sight.
Unquestionably we do not have enough capacity to
handle the current demand from agriculture, potash,
coal and lumber industries, and we are just at the be-
ginning of a major expansion in export potential.
Clearly we need a major plan of action, which will in-
volve government as well as the railroads to increase
rail capacity to the west coast. It probably means dou-
ble tracking for enough rail space and some adjust-
ments in the arrangements of gathering grain from all
points in addition to the
large terminals. It is going
to take a pile of money so
government will be part of
the funding and with it
have some control of what
the plans will be for im-
proved services for the ben-
efit of all shippers.

The Honourable
Bernard Val-
court, Minister of
Aboriginal Affairs and
Northern Development,
issued the following
statement regarding
the FNFTA:
"I am pleased to report
that 529 of 582 First
Nations now have their
documents published
under the First Nations
Financial Trans-
parency Act (FNFTA),
providing their mem-
bers with more trans-
parent and accountable
governance and in turn
helping to ensure band

used for their benefit”.
The Act applies the
same principles of
transparency and ac-

Nation governments
that already exist for
other governments in
Canada and also helps
to empower any person,
including First Nation
members, to hold gov-
ernments accountable
by seeking a Court
Order for the publica-
tion of documents if the
requirements of the Act
are not fulfilled.
With regard to non-
compliant First Na-
tions, at this time our
Government will be
taking action according
to the provisions of the
law which will include:
- Withholding funding
for non-essential pro-
grams, services and ac-
tivities
- Withholding of new
or proposal-based non-
essential program
funding;
- Publishing the names
of all non-compliant
First Nations on the

- In the case of those
First Nations who have
indicated they have no
intention of complying,
seeking court orders to
require publication.
I have directed that
the sanctions not tar-
get essential services
that support band

What is It? - The Delisle Angel Tree Program will provide individuals or families with greatly needed items that they are not able to buy this holiday season. Who can participate? - Individuals and/or families are nominated by friends, family or other members of the community. Those who accept nominations (Angel Tree Recipients) are asked to supply a list of NEED items as well as one or two WANT items. A Christmas tree will be on display in the Delisle Primary Health Centre with angel tags hung on the tree. The tags correspond to an Angel Tree recipient and the tags use a numbering system so everything is anonymous and no names are exchanged. People from the community (Angel Tree Donors) are invited to pick up the tags and purchase the items on the list. Again, all personal and contact information will be kept strictly confidential. How do you participate? - Nominations for Angel Tree recipients are being accepted until December 10th. Please contact Danielle at the Delisle Primary Health Centre at (306) 493-2810 to nominate community members that you think could benefit from this program. Nomination information will be kept completely confidential. No contact information will be exchanged. The program will open up to Angel Tree Donors on December 10th. The deadline for donors to get their wrapped gifts back to the health centre is December 19th. More Information? - Call the Delisle Primary Health Centre @ (306) 493-2810 to nominate a family/individual or for more information.
Make a difference in someone’s life this Holiday Season!

Energy East Pipeline Support
Today in the Saskatchewan Legislature,
our government passed a motion recogniz-
ing the Energy East Pipeline as good for
all parts of Canada, from Saskatchewan
and Alberta, to Ontario, Quebec and be-
yond. The motion recognizes the National
Energy Board (NEB) as the appropriate
body to review national pipeline projects,
such as Energy East, and that provinces
should not invent new conditions such as
greenhouse gas emissions as a barrier to
approval and trade.
Energy East, like previous national
pipeline projects in years past, will be
good for economies across Canada, includ-
ing Ontario and Quebec. The project will
generate billions of dollars of activity, new
jobs, manufacturing, and tax revenue,
much of which will be in Central Canada.
Saskatchewan’s oil sector continues to
serve the people here by providing jobs,
attracting investment, and generating tax
revenue so our government can continue
to make investments that benefit
Saskatchewan people. Energy East will
extend these benefits across Canada.
The NEB already has a stringent ap-
proval process for pipelines in Canada
and moving oil by pipeline is safer, more
environmentally friendly, and more eco-
nomical than moving it by rail. We should
be removing barriers to growth between
provinces, not inventing new ones.
Strong Agriculture Sector
Saskatchewan’s population is trending a
little higher than usual as our province
welcomes thousands of visitors from more
than 60 countries. Agribition, Western
Canada’s premiere agricultural market-
place, trade show and rodeo, is underway.
The traditional “burning of the brand”
kicked off the annual livestock and
agribusiness show which brings hundreds
of exhibitors, thousands of visitors and
the best livestock in North America to
Saskatchewan.
The five-day event at Regina’s Evraz
Place features a full lineup of entertain-
ment that includes the Junior Roping and
Stock Dog competitions, the Canadian
Cowboys Association Finals Rodeo and
Full Contact Jousting. Other events in-
clude eight National Beef Shows, an In-
digenous Agricultural Summit, Grain
Expo Conference and, for the first time
ever, a Think Ag Career Education Expo
for students to learn about careers in
agriculture.
Despite excess moisture this past grow-
ing season, Saskatchewan’s agriculture
sector is as strong as it has ever been.
2013 was our province’s third consecutive
year of record exports at $11.7 billion and,
in 2014, year-to-date exports are 19 per
cent higher. Cattle prices have also
reached record highs and the Western
Livestock Price Insurance Program has
been well-received with about 15 per cent
of our province’s calf crop covered in the
first year.
Saskatchewan is well-positioned as an
important agricultural trader in the
world and expansion of trade relations
will help to sustain and build on that.
The Premier’s trade mission to India this
month is just one example of our govern-
ment’s work to promote growing these re-
lationships.
New Building Canada Fund
By working in partnership with the fed-
eral government, Saskatchewan is now
poised to receive more than $436 million
from the Government of Canada through
the new Building Canada Fund. Over the
next 10 years, regional and local commu-
nities will benefit from stable, predictable
funding to continue to strengthen eco-
nomic growth through investments in
programs and infrastructure. Thanks in
part to this funding, our government can
continue to focus on building stronger
communities, growing export and trade,
ensuring a clean environment, and to
keep meeting the opportunities and chal-
lenges of growth.
Of the $436.7 million, $196.5 million
will go toward provincial projects, while
the remaining $240.2 million will go to-
ward all other eligible Provincial Territo-
rial Infrastructure Component applicants.
These projects will be funded one-third
each by the federal government, the
provincial government and other eligible
recipients. The total federal/provincial
funding that will be invested in
Saskatchewan infrastructure will be more
than $870 million. This is going to help
advance key goals of our Growth Plan as
well as contribute to a higher quality of
life.
Applications are now being accepted.

gibility at

COMMUNITY REPORTS
'Tis the season...
All week I have been singing Christmas
carols. The other day I actually caught
myself belting out “Santa Claus Is Com-
ing to Town” in line at the grocery store.
Surprisingly, no one around me even
batted an eye. I guess the holiday season
is one time of year when folks can sing
in public without feeling silly.
Only a few years ago, you never would
have caught me singing in front of any-
one, much less at the grocery store. I
was convinced that the sound of my
singing voice fell somewhere between
fingernails on a chalkboard and bag-
pipes warming up. I loved to sing, but I
was very careful not to let anyone hear
me.
That wasn't always the case, of
course. When I was a kid I used to sing
all the time. It never occurred to me
then that I should be embarrassed about
how I sounded. Then one day when I was
merrily singing away in the back seat of
the car, my grandma told my grandpa to
pull over, an ambulance was coming.
There was no ambulance. It was my
singing she had heard and thought it
was a siren. And so ended my days of
unselfconscious singing.
Lots of us grow up thinking we can't
sing. Someone made fun of us, or a
teacher told us not to bother trying out
for the musical, or we were kindly told,
“It's OK, you have other gifts.” No mat-
ter how it was put, the message was
clear – you can't sing. So many of us just
stopped singing, at least when there was
anyone else around to hear.
But singing is not just for the musically
'gifted' – it's for everybody. Everyone
sings. Singing touches something deep
inside of us; allows us to give voice to our
feelings. Singing with others is espe-
cially wonderful; it builds community,
nurtures relationships, and it's a whole
lot of fun!
This holiday season, why not put away
those old messages that keep you silent,
and let yourself sing.
Looking for somewhere to test out those
vocal chords?
The Delisle Community Choir meets on
the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each
month. New members are always wel-
come. No auditions; no experience neces-
sary.
December 17th – Delisle-Vanscoy United

evening of Christmas caroling, followed
by hot chocolate and cookies. Meet at the

Local author, Carey Rigby-Wilcox is on a
mission to highlight the impact low literacy
has on adults and to spread the word that
help is available.
The author of the autobiographical children’s
book “My Mummy Couldn’t Read,” Rigby-Wilcox
met with her tutor for three-plus hours every
Sunday for over twenty-three years to address
her own low literacy issues. Once shy and inse-
cure, she is a walking testimonial to how learning
to read expands your life.
In her newest book, “My Dad Couldn’t Read,”
Rigby-Wilcox further destigmatizes the trauma of
low literacy while offering a poignant tale of in-
spiration for children and parents alike. Parents
usually strive to be an inspiration to their chil-
dren, she notes, but what happens when children
become an inspiration to their parents?
In “My Dad Couldn’t read,” told in the first per-
son by a young boy whose dad can barely read,
readers learn how the boy’s dad struggles through
grade school, how his shame and confusion grow,
and how he finally gives up, quits high school,
and goes to work instead.
The boy’s dad is good at his job, but he always
feels that something is missing from his life.
When his own son is born, he realizes that he
made a terrible mistake in not persevering
through his reading challenges and receiving his
high school diploma. The question is, what can he
do about it now?
“My Dad Couldn’t Read” tells the poignant story
of how the boy’s dad addresses his low literacy,
the shame and confusion it causes, and his hopes
and fears for his beloved son. In so doing, the
story offers an inspiring testimony to the power of
love and mutual determination.
For Rigby-Wilcox’s efforts, “My Dad Couldn’t
Read” received a Bronze Medal from the 2014
Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards in the Read-
ing/Literacy category.
She comments, “I want to shed a light on literacy
issues that affect adults today and also show that
there is help for anyone who needs it. I have lived
a life of shame, and I have decided to break the
shame by telling my literacy story. There is help
out there, and the ripple effect helps families,
communities, and countries.”
Author: Local resident Carey
Rigby-Wilcox, a mother of four, is a
committed literacy learner, ac-
tivist, volunteer, business owner,
illustrator, and author who is
deeply dedicated to promoting lit-
eracy at the local, provincial, and
national levels. Carey travels
across Canada sharing the impor-
tance of learning to read and how
exciting it is to be an award-win-
ning author and illustrator. Carey
has presented numerous keynote
presentations and speeches at vari-
ous events. Her passion as an ad-
vocate for literacy has taken her to
provincial and federal govern-
ments and even to Parliament. She
is committed to spreading the word
about the importance of literacy
and the barriers adult learners
face. Her self-published autobio-
graphical children’s book “My
Mummy Couldn't Read’ was short-
listed for the 2008 Saskatchewan
Book Awards Book of the Year.
Award-Winning Children’s Book Banishes the Stigma of Low Literacy and Shows
What Happens When a Boy and his Dad Work Together to Learn to Read
”The award winning ‘My DadCouldn't Read’ is a powerful story
that will pull on your heartstrings.
The empowering message and the
family bonds in this book will
inspire you and your children.
Rigby-Wilcox shows readers that
with support and determination,
anything is possible.”
Kristine Scarrow,
author of Throwaway Girl
“Breaking stereotypes and newground, ‘My Dad Couldn't Read’
is the perfect follow-up to

‘My Mummy Couldn't Read.’
This one is for the boys!”
