Joey Room

The countdown to Christmas has finally begun! The Joey have been really getting into their Christmas craft making their own Santa hats and Christmas trees. This month we have also been focusing on gross-motor, encouraging the Joeys who are showing a interest in walking and crawling.

And as Summer is approaching, the Joeys have been enjoying different types of water play, and also incorporating it into their art by doing painting with frozen paint icicles.

Possum Room

This month the Possum’s learnt all about how dinosaur’s

come from eggs, and create one themselves using paper ma-

che. This prompted the question “Where did the dinosaurs

go?” Together we investigated one theory, that there are no

dinosaurs left due to a mass ice age. Exploring further, we

also looked at the theory of the dinosaur extinction from vol-

canic eruptions, which led us to making our own volcano us-

ing a plastic tube and building sand up around the tube. We

placed bi-carb soda and vinegar together down the tube and

waited for them to react together showing what a volcano

could look like when lava spills over the sides. This experi-

ment encouraged us to look into other science experiments.

We investigated how ice reacts to different substances, find-

ing that ice melted quicker when placed in water then it did

when placed in salt and bi-carb soda. Trying to figure out why

water is good for our bodies, we placed one half of a potato

in a bowl with just water and the other half in a bowl of salt-

ed water. We are currently waiting on the results. We also

enjoyed getting messy with our colour explosions, mixing to-

gether lemon juice, foamy soap and food colouring of their

choice. The children noticed a reaction when they added bi-

carb soda, the faster they stirred the mixture the quicker the

reaction.

Koala Room

Basket Weaving

Ronnie from Thunderstone visited the Koala’s this month, she showed us how to make some traditional Aboriginal craft. We made our own little person by winding pieces of wool around hay to keep It all to-gether and making sure to separate the hay as need-ed for the arms and legs. The children showed inde-pendence and enjoyment over making their own lit-tle person and had a great sense of achievement.

Koala’s had a great time using their mathematical skills to cook some chocolate cupcakes. The children now know that to make cupcakes you need milk, eggs, oil, flour, sugar, butter and a flavour like choc-olate. Using easy mathematical language such as “let’s add 1 cup of milk” and counting how many eggs we used, help the children develop a passion for both maths and self-help skills.

The Koala’s have started talking about Christmas and what it means to ourselves. We have been reading stories and have started making Christmas craft.

Penguin/Emu Room

Basket Weaving

This month, Michelle moved to join us in the Pen-guin/Emu room. We have been working together to further along our self-help skills and our behaviour towards others and what it means to be treated the way we would like to be treated. Michelle has been working with the children to set up the Penguin/Emu room as a Preschool room. A great activity we have been a group time is mind maps, where everyone gets the chance to give their opinion on the daily topic.

The Penguins and Emus also enjoyed a visit by Ron-nie from Thunderstone, we talked about traditional Aboriginal craft and got to make our own little per-son using hay and wool. Winding the wool around the hay to help keep it together.
