As I noted in my November President’s Corner arti-cle, one of the challenges all construction related busi-nesses face in the future is Certification, Training and Continuing Education.

Recently I read a very good article I received from the Foundation of Wall and Ceilings Industry (FWDI) ti-tled “Lean Construction Practices for Contractor: Cur-rent thought and Methodologies” – July 2015. It focuses on “Lean Construction Practices for Contractors”. A few important innovations revolutionizing the construc-tion industry today are: Lean Six Sigma, Integrated Project Delivery, Building Information Modeling (BIM), Proactive Training and Development of Field Leaders, Global Posi-tioning Systems (GPS) as well as other innovations and processes. One of the take-aways was “Adopting Lean practices can go a long way to extinction-proofing a

President’s Corner John Larkin, CDT, USGBC

company’s products and services because it requires a philosophy of continuous improvement and constantly evolving process that looks for and removes waste”. You get a copy of this paper by going to the FWDI web site www.awci.org. I would suggest taking time to get a copy of this, read it, and share with others.

Again, the Certification programs CSI offers are, I feel, some of the foundation stones for

success for those in the construction industry, today and tomorrow. We can provide “Building Knowledge” that “Improves Project Delivery.”

As a reminder our spring 2016 CDT and CCPR Prep Courses will begin 2/1/2016, Mondays

from 7:00 AM - 8:30 AM for 8 Weeks. To sign up and get more information, contact Matt Walsh ([email protected] or 913-481-4200).

In closing I would like to extend a Holiday Wish to you all and your families

from me and my family. Believe in the spirit of the Holiday. May the happy mo-ments of the season brighten every day of the New Year.

As always, thank your all for your support, contributions and faith in who we are, what we

do and where we are going .

John

The KCCSI sponsored its 5th annual Procrastinators’ Ball education event on November 11 at Johnson County Community College’s Regnier Center. The Chapter’s award-winning program is offered as a last-minute opportunity for busy professionals to learn about complementary subjects related to a common theme and to earn needed AIA/CES continuing education credits prior to year’s end. It is also a great opportunity for product representatives to showcase their expertise as trusted advisors to the construction and design community. The event was rebranded this year as the Knowledge College, reflecting the need for educational events throughout the year. It was managed by Professional Development Chair Rich Bartholomew, CSI, CDT, AIA and Committee Member David Dixon, CSI, CCCA, CCPR, RRC, RRO. Forty designers, specifiers, presenters, students, and constructors braved a windy fall day to enjoy lunch and four educational sessions centered on this year’s theme: “Get Your Floor On | Don’t Grout About It.” The approved programs focused on understanding moisture and concrete floor slabs, surface preparation for tiling, large format tile and stone installation, and how to properly specify grout. The event was capped off by a social hour and the KCCSI November Chapter meeting. Those who stayed for the day, along with as many as six students who attended the presentations, came away with helpful information from each session. Our sponsoring vendors had tabletop displays and were given the opportunity to briefly present their proprietary products to the audience in appreciation for their sponsorship fees. Our sincerest thanks to JCCC and Robert Dye, FCSI, CCS, CCCA, RRC, LEED AP as our hosts, and to all the attendees. Special thanks to our presenters: Mr. Bob Dienstbach, CSI, CDT - Mapei Corporation Mr. Brian Cordak - Mapei Corporation Mr. Howard Jancy, CSI, CDT - Custom Building Products We also want to acknowledge and thank our sponsoring vendors: Custom Building Products - Howard Jancy Mapei Corporation - Bob Dienstbach/Brian Cordack Emser Tile - David Domenick STO - Robin Leach-Hahlbeck, CSI Please forward feedback and comments on this year’s event to Rich Barholomew at [email protected]. And make plans now to attend next year’s event which promises to be even bigger and better! SAVE THE DATE: NOVEMBER 9, 2016!

December’s Chapter Meeting was also our opportunity to contribute to the U.S. Marine Corps’ “TOYS FOR TOTS”

program. Once again, KCCSI members gave generously, helping make the Holidays

brighter for area children! Special thanks to our USMC partners who made it all possible!
