Wow, we have had a busy month. With the well attended AGM, to a very well organized Remembrance Day Ceremony. I would like to Thank all the organizers of this event which was coordinated by Past Commodore Conor Shankey. Approximately 20 boats on the water at Cates Park, 1500 people plus on shore and a great sound system led to the ceremony part of the day being a success. BYC Annual Installation Dinner- Capilano Golf and Country Club November 19th 2016

About 160 members and guest turned out for Burrard Yacht Club’s Annual Installation Dinner. For many years we have held this at the Capilano Golf and Country Club with its fine setting.

As per tradition, the head table, consisting of: our Commodore Frank Mogridge, his wife Laurette, Vice Commodore Frank Plumptre and his wife Dawn-Marie, Past Commodore Connor Shankey and his wife

Karen and our Rear Commodore Cliff Taylor were piped in by Joe MacDonald.

One Happy Piper Your Head Table

Past Commodore Conor Shankey gave a speech reflecting on his six year commitment to the Board. This was followed later by a presentation of a gift to Conor and as well, a bouquet of flowers to Karen Shankey.

The evening continued on with a bit of humor via our MC, Frank Plumptre, leading off with a collection of rabbit jokes. There were a select few that found it a “hare raising” experience. But it got better when our new Commodore Frank Mogridge lead off with some even better ones.

Some other members also had interesting moments.

You’re telling me they are serving diced Yak tonight!

Not sure how to wear this.

Gibson’s Moorage Agreement Renewed!

At the time of our last AGM, it was announced that the Gibson’s Marina had decided not to renew our upcoming annual lease with them. They, in fact, did this with all lease holders. The initial response by our membership at the time of the announcement was disappointment. Because of this, the following discussion was about the loss of the Gibson’s Outstation and a concerted attempt to renegotiate a successful outcome.

Thanks to the determined efforts of our then, Vice Commodore and Outstations Director, Frank Mogridge and Grant Sutton respectively, Gibson’s Marina reconsidered and has since agreed and signed to a new lease. The lease cost increased 50% from the previous year, however it is still less on a per foot basis than our other leases. There were other concessions that would have resulted in “no deal” had we not agreed to them. These include the ability of Gibson’s Marina to place transient boaters in our slips after 5pm, if the slips are empty, and our requirement to sign in at the marina office.

The good news is that we will be reimbursed for the transient boaters and thus bring our total cost down. This is new for us at Gibson’s Marina and hopefully will result in a win-win for both BYC and the Gibson’s Marina.

One of the challenges we face is having a good sense of our usage metrics. Members visiting a given outstation are supposed to sign into the book at the outstation. The Gibson’s Marina has requested that members provide their details at the marina office. Therefore, to avoid confusion, the sign in book at the Gibson’s Marina will no longer be used.

Below, in part, is the addendum for your information:

Notwithstanding any terms in the Moorage Agreement 2017 to the contrary, both parties agree as follows: It is here agreed between The Burrard Yacht Club and the Gibsons Marina that vacant berths (slips) after 17:00 are then available for the Gibsons Marina to rent out to transients for the night as they see fit.

All transients which occupy the available berths (slips), rented to them by The Gibsons Marina, must check out by 11:00 the following day. When an available berth is rented to a transient through the Gibsons Marina, Burrard Yacht Club are here entitled to a reimbursement for the use of their berth(s) which will be equivalent to one day reimbursement for one day usage and will be calculated on a per day basis and will be refunded to the Burrard Yacht Club.

Vacant berth(s) which are not rented to a transient as per the above agreements are still available to the Burrard Yacht Club and their members. The Burrard Yacht Club and their members are not to be charged for the usage of the berth(s) after 17:00.

It is here agreed that all Burrard Yacht Club members must check in with the office; upon check in they must supply the Gibsons Marina with the following information:

(a) The berth(s) they have occupied(b) The length, beam and name of their vessel (c) The length of time they will be occupying the berth(s)(d) Vessel owner’s name and valid contact details for legal purposes 6. It has been agreed by Burrard Yacht Club and The Gibsons Marina that for off season moorage the following steps will be exercised and adhered to for the Burrard Yacht Club Members: (a) An appointed Outstation Director will approve the members of the Burrard Yacht Club’s seasonal moorage at the Gibsons Marina.(b) The appointed Outstation Director will be held responsible to contact Jeff James, the manager of The Gibsons Marina, via email with the member’s name and length of stay at the Gibsons Marina.(c) The appointed Outstation Director will be held responsible to inform the members of the Burrard Yacht Club to contact the Gibsons Marina’s office upon arrival and pay for the term agreed upon. (d) It has been agreed that the Gibsons Marina will then credit Burrard Yacht Club for a portion of the member’s seasonal moorage, paid against their 2017 renewal.

David GagnonOutstations Director

From the Editor

Working on the Trident for the last few years has been a great pleasure. When I took over for Terry Murphy this seemed like a good extension of my webmaster’s role for the communication of the club. I didn’t really know how much work would be involved but as with any volunteering, it’s a labour of love.

And now as Gord Cooling takes over as the Trident editor starting in January 2017, he will bring his own style and flair to the newsletter.

Thank you to all of the people who submitted content over the years. Your contributions helped make the Trident a more entertaining, informative, and compelling read.

As I move into my new role as Rear Commodore and begin focusing on other BYC issues, please continue to support the Trident and Gord by sending in your submissions to: [email protected]
