Risky play

‘Risk-taking is an essential part of children’s play. Managing that risk is the key to providing opportunities that support growth and development and keep children safe from unreasonable risk and injury. The balancing of these two is vital for our children’s health and development’.

(Allen and Rapee, 2005 cited in Sanseter, E. and Kennair, L. 2011)

Everyday life is full of risks and

challenges and children need

opportunities to develop the skills

associated with managing risk and

making informed judgements about

risks from a very young age.

If we want 'confident individuals' willing to

embrace risk and challenge

then we need confident adults who have a deep

Understanding of the issues surrounding risk and play

which goes way beyond a narrow 'health and safety'

agenda.

The Risk of no Risk: A step by step approach to developing a risk-based

program for school aged children

South OSHC and School settings Monday 4th September 2017 9.30am - 12.00pm North West OSHC and School settings Tuesday 5th September 2017 9.30am - 12.00pm North OSHC and School settings Wednesday 6th September 2017 9.30am - 12.00pm Facilitator: Scott Gibson Cost $75 (plus GST) All levels of experience

For many of us playing outside in nature with no adults in sight and taking risks was an everyday part of our childhood. But what we once took for granted has changed to such an extreme that we are now seeing children spending more time indoors than any other time in history due to rapid urbanization, increased screen time and a growing culture of risk aversion, with the over-protecting of children becoming more and more prominent throughout Australia.

Children deserve and benefit from challenges and adventures that include risk. Their self-esteem grows, along with their physical and mental abilities as they negotiate risk appropriate for their personality and development. Whether you are an educator, manager or CEO it is your duty to develop strategies for school aged children to learn about and experience risk. This workshop will explore:

-why children need to take risks -how to support risk taking in OSHC -adventurous play and learning -adult’s roles and responsibilities -developing a Benefit Risk Assessment -strategies for bringing families, managers, schools and educators on board.

Children and Nature

When children play outside they are happier, more relaxed, more cooperative, more independent, more inquisitive, more physical and more imaginative. In fact, research demonstrates that unstructured, outdoor play in nature is fundamental to childhood and that it is as important to children as food and sleep!

Nature Play SA article Why Nature Play is Good for our Children, Maria Zotti

For children, the sense of freedom experienced during the unstructured play that occurs in nature creates a source of independence and inner

strength that can be drawn on during stressful situations for the

rest of their lives.

A child, more than anyone else, is a spontaneous

observer of nature.
