Beef Weigh-in for the 2018 Mississippi Valley Fair, Iowa State Fair, & AK-SAR-BEN will

be held on Sunday, December 10, 2017 from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the DeWitt Veterinary Clinic.

All Scott County 4-H’ers and FFA members wishing to exhibit market steers, breed steers, dairy steers,

market heifers, performance beef, and second year market bucket calves at the County, State Fair and AK

-SAR-BEN MUST attend this weigh in on this date (Scott County 4-H/FFA members are NOT allowed to

weigh-in at any other county).

If for some reason you cannot attend, someone else can bring your animals. All members will need to verify

your animals in 4-H Online by February 1, 2018 to confirm all information is entered correctly.

We are still taking enrollment for NEW 4-H members. If

you know someone who has never been in 4-H that is

interested in joining, please refer them to our office. New enrollees may join 4-H through May 15, 2018.

Scholarship Opportunities

Scott County Farm Bureau Scholarship Awards

All students whose parents are Scott County Farm Bureau members are encouraged to enter

the county scholarship contest. Three winners will be chosen on the county level. In addition,

two applicants who are entering an ag-related field and submit a 500-word essay with their

county application may also be chosen to advance to the state scholarship contest (One of 54

- $1,000 scholarships offered by the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation).

The Scott County Farm Bureau Board of Directors will award $1,000 per year scholarship, for

four consecutive years to the first-place recipient. The second-place recipient will receive an

$800 per year and the third-place recipient will receive a $600 per year scholarship.

Each entrant is required to return the completed form, along with two letters of reference, an

official high school transcript (and an essay is applying for the state scholarship) by the dead-

line of March 1, 2018. Scholarship applications are available online at http://

www.iowacollegeaid.gov/content/iowa-farm-bureau-federation-scholarship.

Scott County applicants will be required to attend a personal interview in mid-March 2018.

Students will be contacted by phone to set up an interview time after the deadline. Those

applying and who wish to be considered for the scholarship awards, must make themselves

available for this interview.

Iowa 4-H Foundation Scholarships for 2018

The Iowa 4-H Foundation has announced applications are available for the 4-H scholarship

program with over 90 scholarship opportunities to be awarded valued at over $100,000.

A complete list of scholarships, eligibility, helpful hints, instructions, and applications are

available online.

Online deadline is 11:59 PM, February 1, 2018. Questions or concerns, please contact Mary

Photography Contest

2018 Equine Extravaganza - March 23-25, 2018 Held at Ellsworth Community College, Iowa Falls. We all know that having horses requires more than riding and jumping! Get motivated to learn more about the science behind horses at Equine Extravaganza! It isn't too soon to start gathering a team! Information from previous years is available. Check back for 2018 information and registration. If you have never participated before, consider attending this year and observing or jump right in!

Dubuque County Horse Camp (Flyer) (Brochure)

June 17-23, 2018, "The Best Week of Summer", Dubuque County Fairgrounds. Residential,

overnight equine camp open to grades 4-12. Campers will bring their horse to camp and

participate in daily activities. Space is limited! Application Deadline: March 31, 2018.

Clubs take part in the challenge by introducing a variety of healthy living practices during club meetings each month. Completing the challenges earns the clubs "miles" as they race across Iowa throughout all 20 regions of the state. This 1,400 mile route destination sure fulfills the definition of a challenge, but by working together as a team and setting goals to incorporate healthy living practices each month, we hope to see you meet or surpass the final mile by the end of June!

4-H Fuels Wellness: Race Across Iowa Challenge Kick Off: November 1 - June 30. Clubs take part in the challenge by introducing a variety of healthy living practices during club meetings each month and earn "miles" as they race across ISU Extension and Outreach 20 regions.

4-H National Healthy Living Summit Information and Application

National 4-H Healthy Living Summit at the National 4-H Conference Center, Chevy Chase,

MD, February 16-19, 2018 provides an opportunity for Iowa youth to engage with other youth

leaders across the country interested in Healthy Living program topics. Immersed in a variety of

workshops of their choosing covering areas of wellness and well being from cooking and the im-

portance of physical activity to mindfulness and healthy relationships.

Application deadline is December 8 with interviews following December 11-15 with the goal to

notify youth on the evening of December 15th. Partial funding is available. Please help identify

interested youth!

Nominate Deserving 4-H'ers for the Contributing Youth Award We need you help to identify the winner of the Contributing Youth Award, which will be given to a current 4-H'er who is making an impact on their home community. Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) CWF is a 4-H leadership program for high school youth, grades 9-12. Registration is now open for the June 15-23, 2018 trip. Teens from around the country gather at the National 4-H Conference Center to learn more about civic engagement and how they can be a strong leader in their commu-nity, country, and world. Spring 2018 DuPont Pioneer Seed Grant for Iowa 4-H Club Community Improvement Projects Objective of these grants is to stimulate local 4-H clubs in Iowa to plan and carry out community improvement activi-ties by providing "seed money" needed to make the projects successful.
