Slow Down! An Update on SpeedEnforcement at LBS

A concern that has been voiced by resi-dents is drivers not obeying the postedspeed limit of 20 mph (or 15 mph alongposted areas Oak Hill). The association’spublic safety partner, Allied Universal, has increased efforts to enforce movingvehicle violation while patrolling. Thisincludes having “speed blitz” days whenadditional vehicles are brought to thecommunity to enforce moving viola-tions.

In another effort to encourage residents, guests, and contractors to SLOWDOWN… is an update to the moving citation ticketing fees. Please be sure to communicate to your guests and contractors the speed limit within LBS.Effective, January 1, 2019, the followingfine schedule will be in place:

The fines for all moving violations are asfollows:

20-25 mph or not making a full stop ata stop sign

• 1st Offense per household = Warning• 2nd Offense per household = Warning• 3rd Offense per household = $100.00

Fine

26-35 mph

• 1st Offense per household = $25.00Fine

• 2nd Offense per household = $50.00Fine

• 3rd Offense per household = $100.00Fine

Greater than 35 mph

• 1st Offense and each repeated offenseper household = $100.00 Fine

In addition to the $100 fine for the 3rdoffense and thereafter for moving viola-tion citations, offenders will be referredto the Master Board or its designatedbody for further action. The institutionof fines will be based on the date of thefirst offense within any consecutive 12-month period. All collected fines will bethe property of the LBCHA.

LBS LADIES’ BOWLING LEAGUELadies’ Bowling started a new season at3-D Bowl in Island Lake with a fewglitches but got back on a roll, with lotsof fun selecting team names (drinks—that’s the theme, not our morning activ-ity) and meeting and greeting newbowlers.

First place, after week four, is the Cosmos—Karen Ramagnano, Kay Gille-spie and Reggie Andrew. Close behind isTruly Yours—Kay Beaty and PhyllisHahn. There’s a very close race for thirdthrough sixth place but, since this is ahandicapped league, this is likely tochange very quickly and often.

Holding the season-to-date honors withhigh scratch game, Karen Ramagnanowith 186 and Harriet Kummerow with172. Scratch series highs are PhyllisHahn with 443 and Chris Day with 437.And, a quick change when we add hand-icaps, high handicap game is Becky Mc-Govern with 271, Kay Beaty with 242,and Sandi Young with 234. Handicapseries goes to Judy Samaras with 658,Carole Baranski with 628, and CarolKanak with 615.

November brought the Turkey Roll andthen a break for the holiday. We’ll prob-ably be a bit rounder as we meet againin December. Happy feasting and agrateful Thanksgiving for friends andfun!

THE BOOK OF JOY:Lasting Happiness in a Changing

WorldDalai Lama and Desmond Tutu

Monday, January 7, 2019

How do we find joy in the face of life’sinevitable suffering? Drawing from les-sons experienced in their tumultuous ex-ceptional lives, Nobel Peace PrizeLaureates His Holiness the Dalai Lamaand Archbishop Desmond Tutu met forfive days of intimate, contemplative and, indeed, joyful conversation to answerthis very question. “Everyone seeks hap-piness...but from outside,” the DalaiLama observes, yet the sources of notjust happiness but also joy are humility, gratitude, forgiveness and compassion—the ingredients of a truly joyful and joy-filled life.

Considerpouring Non-Toxic Antifreeze in the toi-lets & tanks to prevent them from crack-ing & freezing. Close the flue to yourfireplace. Make sure you have an “InCase of Emergency” person on file atthe management office. It is also helpfulif that person has a key to your home toenter it in case of that emergency.

CHIMNEY SAFETY TIPS To aid in the prevention of chimney firesand carbon monoxide intrusion and tohelp keep fireplaces functioning prop-erly, the Chimney Safety Institute ofAmerica (CSIA) offers the followingsafety tips: 1. Get an annual chimneycheck. Have chimneys inspected annu-ally, and cleaned as necessary, by a qualified professional chimney servicetechnician. This reduces the risk of firesand carbon monoxide poisonings due tocreosote buildup or obstructions in thechimneys. 2. Install a chimney screen tokeep debris and animals out of the chim-ney. NOTE: At LBS, the unit owner isresponsible for the chimney screens. 3.Choose the right fuel. For burning fire-wood in wood stoves or fireplaces, choose well-seasoned wood that hasbeen split for a minimum of six monthsto one year and stored in a covered andelevated location. Never burn Christmastrees or treated wood in your fireplaceor use flammable liquids. NOTE: Perthe LBS Rules, “Firewood shall bestored in garages or other enclosed areasbut not on porches, patios or decks.Firewood cannot be stored in view ofothers. Duraflame or pressed logs can-not be used because they burn too hotand can cause chimney fires.” 4. Keepthe hearth area clear. Combustible ma-terial too close to the fireplace could eas-ily catch fire. Keep furniture at least 36”away from the hearth. Use metal meshor a screen in front of the fireplace tocatch flying sparks that could ignite orburn holes in the carpet or flooring. 5.Install smoke and carbon monoxide de-tectors. Place detectors throughout thehouse and check batteries in the springand fall. When you change your clocksfor Daylight Savings Time, remember tocheck your batteries. 6. Never leave afire unattended. Before turning in for the evening, be sure that the fire is fullyextinguished. Supervise children andpets closely around fireplaces.

Also, section IV. D. 3. d. states “Personalproperty shall not be left on Common Elements.”

These rules were established by the Association in order to preserve, protect, and enhance your community.

In essence, tasteful exterior decorationsare allowed at the discretion of your in-dividual Board of Directors within yourlimited common elements (such as yourfront door/entry and patio/deck/balconyareas) from November 22nd throughJanuary 31st.

WINTER TIPSWinter is fast approaching. Many peopledo not think about getting ready forwinter until after the first cold spell, butfall is the best time to get your homesready for winter.

• REPLACE YOUR FURNACE FILTER!This is a project that’s especially impor-tant in the winter for warmth. By check-ing the filter on a monthly basis andreplacing it as needed, your furnace willheat your house more efficiently, savingyou money on utility bills.

• BE PROACTIVE ABOUT PLUMBING!To weatherproof your outdoor plumb-ing, shut off the supply of water to out-door spigots and drain them. Roll upyour sprinkler hose & store it for thewinter.

• KEEP GARAGE DOORS CLOSED TIGHTWater pipes could be in the slab of thegarage. Those pipes could easily freezeand cause a pipe to burst.
