Our Renewed Roman Missal Our Renewed Roman Missal Our Renewed Roman Missal Our Renewed Roman Missal ---- Sitting, Standing, KneelingSitting, Standing, KneelingSitting, Standing, KneelingSitting, Standing, Kneeling In the celebration of the Eucharist, we express our unity as the Body of Christ with our common words and songs, and our common posture. Over the past several weeks, we have started to become familiar with some new words and new music, and some changes in the times when we sit, kneel and stand. These changes require all of us to become much more aware of what we actually say and do together at Mass. To review the guidelines for our common posture: We stand from the beginning of the Entrance Procession, until after the Opening Prayer. We sit for the first parts of the Liturgy of the Word, then stand for the Gospel. We sit for the homily, then stand for the Creed and the Prayers of Intercession. We sit for the Procession with the Gifts, then we stand for the prayer: "May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church." We remain standing until the invocation of the Holy Spirit in the Eucharistic Prayer, when the priest joins his hands and extends them over the bread and the wine. At that point, we kneel, and remain kneeling for the Institution Narrative and the Consecration. We stand at the words "The Mystery of Faith", and continue to stand until all have received Holy Communion. Communion is received standing. The sign of reverence before receiving Holy Communion is a simple bow of the head, not a genuflection. Those who are unable to stand throughout this time may be seated as necessary. When the distribution of Communion is completed, all are seated for a time of sacred silence. We stand again for the Prayer after Communion, and remain standing until Mass is concluded. In parishes without kneelers, all stand during the Eucharistic Prayer and make a profound bow at the consecration when the host and chalice are shown to the people. Traditionally, the common posture for Christian prayer in the early Church was standing. This posture has been seen as the Christian's expression of respect, honour and Easter joy. The Council of Nicea in 325 AD prescribed that on Sundays and during the Easter Season, prayer should always be said standing. Here in the diocese of Sault Ste. Marie, our common posture in the celebration of the Eucharist will express our oneness in the Body of Christ, and our rev-erence and joy as we share in this Eucharistic banquet.

Could it be that one reason for the lack of vocations is our failure to stress sacrifice? The young have a sense of victimhood that we underestimate. They want a mission, a challenge!
