  • A MESSAGE FROM FR. RAJ

A very blessed Feast of the Holy Family to all of you and your families! Now, maybe it is exhaustion from the season, but I’m going to take a slightly easy way out this week, and let someone else do the talking. All joking aside, allow me to share with you one of my favorite messages about the Holy Family from Pope St. John Paul II: Today we shift our gaze from the grotto of Bethlehem where the Saviour was born on Holy Night to the humble house of Nazareth, to contemplate the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, whose feast we celebrate in the festive, family atmosphere of Christmas. The Redeemer of the world chose the family as the place for his birth and growth, thereby sanctifying this fundamental institution of every society. [...] For every believer, and especially for Christian families, the humble dwelling place in Nazareth is an authentic school of the Gospel. Here we admire, put into practice, the divine plan to make the family an intimate community of life and love; here we learn that every Christian family is called to be a small "domestic church" that must shine with the Gospel virtues. Recollection and prayer, mutual understanding and respect, personal discipline and community asceticism and a spirit of sacrifice, work and solidarity are typical features that make the family of Nazareth a model for every home.

[...] The Church relies especially on the witness and contribution of Christian families to fulfil her urgent mission. Indeed, in the face of the dangers and difficulties that beset the family institution, she invites families to have greater spiritual and apostolic boldness, knowing that the family is called to be "a sign of unity for the world" and thus to bear witness to "the Kingdom and peace of Christ, towards which the whole world is journeying." I find this message from Pope St. John Paul II, which he gave on Dec. 30, 2001, still so rich with meaning, and with great lessons for all of us to unpack. Indeed, there is so much to learn from the model of the Holy Family. Wherever our family situation is on the journey, might we allow the love of the Holy Family assist us along the way. I’m going to turn it back to Pope St. John Paul II, and entrust our parish family to the intercession of the Holy Family: May Jesus, Mary and Joseph bless and protect all the world's families, so that within them may reign the serenity and joy, justice and peace that the newborn Christ has given as a gift to humanity.

In Christ, Fr.

CELEBRATION OF MASS WHEN IT’S RAINING

When our outdoor Masses are cancelled due to rain, Fr. Raj will celebrate a private mass indoors that will be livestreamed to Facebook and locally broadcast via radio transmission. Parishioners are encouraged to come to Sacred Heart, park their cars, and either watch the Mass on Facebook or listen to the Mass on the radio from their cars (FM 94.3). Immediately following the conclusion of Mass, the distribution of communion will take place in the front entrance of the Church. After Mass, those receiving communion will be invited to the entrance and are asked to follow the instructions regarding flow, wearing masks, and maintaining social distancing.

    GOSPEL MEDITATION FOR DECEMBER 27TH

Tragedy and disappointment are inevitable. What sees you through this? There will be challenges, changes, unexpected circumstances, interrupted plans, hurts, and injustices experienced by every human being at some point in their lives. We will be asked to adjust our plans, change course, and even encounter suffering and death. Where do we learn all of the lessons we need to live life well? Some of them we learn along the way but much of what we bring to life, positive and negative, comes from our early beginnings, our families. This is our early world and provides the blueprint for how we see the bigger, more inclusive world, which unfolds before us. Our families of origin can be sources of grace, heartache or a combination of both. Families are intended to be pivotal in providing us with proper social structure and understanding, a support system, lessons about relationships and communication, and the unconditional acceptance and love we so desperately crave. They can also determine whether we have an accessible and healthy relationship with God. Many of life’s challenges can literally bring us to our knees and require that we possess a strength of character that resides well beyond the superficialities of our world. At some point we will all need three coping gifts that can be given to us only by God: faith, hope, and love. Our families help us learn that we are not the ones responsible for their creation, but God! Our experience of early family life colors all of our relationships and what we expect to achieve from life in general. Resolving conflicts, dealing with difficulty and suffering, celebrating accomplishments, prioritizing our needs, listening to God’s call, understanding relationships, understanding disappointment, learning about the virtues and living a centered focused life are all lessons our families either succeed in teaching or do not. To succeed, as God has designed and ordered our world, is to discover his presence and then trust that Presence. The Holy Family can teach even the most dysfunctional family how to best use God’s gifts of faith, hope, and love to find him and do his will. Their simple humble example is always before us, showing us the way. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us!
