XI GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND X INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR OF THE COIMBRA GROUP OF BRAZILIAN
UNIVERSITIES (CGBU)
This year, the XI General Assembly and X International
Seminar of the CGBU was held at the Budapest University of
Technology and Economics (BME) in Budapest, Hungary,
between September 24th and September 27th of 2018.
SUPPORT: Hungarian Rectors' Conference
(HRC) - organization that represents the whole system of
Hungarian Institutions of Higher Education.
More than 140 representatives of Institutions of Higher Education
from more than 20 countries were present in the event, besides
representatives of government bodies and diplomatic delegations
of several countries.
Global Universities in the XXI Century: Characteristics, Trends and Main Challenges
XI GENERAL ASSEMBLY
On September 24th of 2018, the XI General Assembly of CGBU took place. In the ocasion, the Board of Directors and
the members of the Fiscal Council gathered to discuss and aprove the following points:
Over the past two years, fourteen universities have joined the CGBU, and the Group currently has 86 associated brazilian
institutions of Higher Education.
During the XI General Assembly, 4 new members were approved to join CGBU:
Universidade Estadual da Paraíba (UEPB); Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido (UFERSA);
Universidade Estadual do Maranhão (UEMA); Universidade Municipal de São Caetano do Sul (USCS).

Plenary Session 1: Global Universities in the XXI Century: Characteristics,
Trends and Main Challenges
SPEAKERS: Ádám Szigeti Deputy State Secretary, Ministry of Innovation and Technology, Hungary.
Péter Tordai Director, Tempus Public Foundation, Hungary. Christopher Somogyi Co-founder and Chairman, BlueNalu, United States.
Naomar Almeida Filho Professor, Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA) and first President of CGBU, Brazil.
DEBATER: Katalin Nagy President of the International Committee of the Hungarian Rectors’ Conference, Hungary.
COORDINATOR: László Kardoss Head of Department, Rector's Office Secretariat, BME, Hungary.
The presentation of Ádám Szigeti addressed strategic objectives and achievements of
innovation and technology, global economy, job market and sustainable development.
Péter Tordai highlighted the international context, the hungarian Higher Education
system and the cooperation between Brazil and Hungary.
Christopher Somogyi (left in the photo above) spoke about innovation and entrepreneurship at universities,
and discussed about Academic Technology Transfer.
Naomar Almeida Filho noted both the global and the brazilian economy and social matters, as well as the brazilian
system of education.
Plenary Session 2: Global Geopolitical Changes and Challenges for the
Internationalization of Universities

Agostinho Neto, Angola. Ru-Jer Wang President of National Taichung University of Education and President of Taiwan
Higher Education Society, Taiwan (R.O.C.). Robert Redhammer Vice-president of the Slovak Rectors´ Conference and Rector of the Slovak
University of Technology in Bratislava, Slovakia. Attila Brungs Vice-Chancellor and President, University of Technology Sydney, Australia.
María José Lemaitre Executive Director, Centro Interuniversitario de Desarrollo, Chile. DEBATER: Violet Barriteau Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal, The University of the West
Indies Cave Hill Campus, Barbados. COORDINATOR: Márk Honti Senior Research Fellow, Hungarian Academy of Sciences / MTA-
BME Water Research Group, Hungary.
Ru-Jer Wang addressed the issue of internalization of universitites in Asia. The lecture also explored the topic of academic
mobility and foreign students.
Attila Brungs brought to discussion the subject of international students in
Australia, the geopolitical challenges and new paths to
achieve better results.
Maria José Lemaitre stated about innovation and challenges in the matter of internationalization of universities in Latin
America, cybertechnology and the demands from the Higher Education
system.
Plenary Session 3: Social Accountability, Innovation and Entrepeunership at
the XXI Century University
SPEAKERS: Evilázio Francisco Borges Teixeira Reitor, PUCRS - Brazil.
Tibor Döry Director, Knowledge Management Center, Széchenyi István University, Hungary. Mohamed Saleh Owliaresident, Yazd University, Iran.
DEBATER: István Vilmos Kovács, Director, International Relations and Innovation, Corvinus University of Budapest, Hungary.
COORDINATOR: Marco Tullio de Castro Vasconcelos, Vice-Reitor, Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie, Brazil.
The lecture of Evilázio Francisco Borges Teixeira concerned the PUCRS’ Science and Technology Park (TECNOPUC). He
also spoke about strategic goals and technologic transfer.
Tibor Döry highlighted the innovation and
entrepreneurship at hungarian universities, in addition to presenting in
detail the HEInnovate program and the future
of higher education.
Mohamed Saleh Owlia addressed the topics of
innovation programmes, networking, technology and science in the case
of the University of Yazd, in Iran.
Plenary Session 4: The Differences Between Structures, Validation of Credits
and Diplomas in Bachelor's, Master's and Phd's Degrees
SPEAKERS: Martha del Carmen Mesa Valenciano First Vice Minister of Higher Education, Cuba.
Koen DePryck Representative, International Institute of Education for Development and Professor, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Brussels.
András Derényi Department for Knowledge Management, Hungarian Institute for Educational Research and Development, Hungary.
DEBATER: Alberto Spisni University of Parma, Italy. COORDINATROR: Sándor Gyula Nagy Deputy Director for Academic Affairs , Institute
for Foreign Affairs and Trade (IFAT), Hungary.
Martha del Carmen Mesa Valenciano noted the model and structure of cuban
universities, values and principles of education and studies lines which are being
explored.
Koen De Pryck exposed the differences between structures and validation of credits
in the Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate Degrees. He also addressed the challenges to
increase mobility.
András Derényi presented the challenges and opportunities in hungarian Higher Education and the first results of team work
in the Hungarian Rector’s Conference (HRC).
Plenary Session 5: Start-Ups, Spin-Offs, Technology Transfer and Incubation:
Different Regional Approaches
SPEAKERS: José Ricardo de Santana Director of Institutional Cooperation, Conselho Nacional de
Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq, and Representative of the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications, Brazil.
Nedeljko Milosavljevic Director, Center for Technology Transfer, University of Belgrade, Serbia.
Péter Földesi Rector, Széchenyi István University, Hungary. DEBATER: Barnabás Kovács Consul General, Hungarian CoVice-Rector, Universidade Federal

about the brazilian initiatives on science, technology and innovation,
as well as the country’s economic scenario and future opportunities.
Plenary Session 6: The University and it's Urban Enviroment – Opportunities,
Collaborations and Regional Impact

Gauri Shankar Gupta Former Ambassador and High Commissioner of India, India. Bálint Bachmann Chief Education Officer, Vice-Rector, Budapest Metropolitan

Márcia Abrahão Moura explored
topics regarding the University of Brasilia (UnB) and its urban environment, new
opportunities, collaborations and regional impacts.
Gauri Shankar Gupta, in his speech, addressed the integration beetwen the environment and urban areas. He also spoke about the society of consumption,
cities growth, and the impact of urbanization among other pertinent issues.

On Monday evening, September 24th 2018, the
Embassy of Brazil in Budapest invited all guests and
participants to a welcome cocktail, which also featured a
special performance by the Budapest Contemporary
Dance Academy.

On September 25th 2018, the Hungarian Rectors' Conference and the Tempus
Public Foundation invited all participants to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences for
the gala dinner, held at the Széchenyi Square – workplace of hungarian biggest
brains since 1825. The place has a wonderful view of the Danube River, and the guests were able to enjoy the unique
historical interior of the building as well as the delicious Hungarian cuisine.

On Wednesday afternoon, there was also a Campus tour at the Budapest University of Technology and
Economics (BME), founded in 1782 and one of the major Higher Education
Institutions in engineering in Central Europe. Paticipants had the opportunity to learn about the history of its beautiful buildings, parks, library and much more.

On September 27th 2018, as part of the closing ceremony, students of
the Hungarian Dance Academy performed a traditional Hungarian dance.
After lunch, the hungarian universities invited all participants to a wine-tasting,
accompanied by the Citara artist Zita Debreczeni-Kism from the Franz Liszt
Academy of Music.

The tour took place on September 28th, 2018 and was intended to explore the wonders of Budapest, including the Basilica, the Andrássy Avenue, the Heroes
