Year-end tax contribution statements As in the past, we will be issuing year-end tax statements to those parishioners that e-mail [email protected], or that call the office to request their statements after January 1, 2020. Statements will be processed weekly beginning January 31, 2020. Your statement can either be picked up at the office during regular business hours, e-mailed or mailed to you. For ParishSOFT On-Line Givers, you can process your tax statements directly from ParishSOFT. Go to “My Online Giving History,” click print, select the time period, and select detail report. This report satisfies IRS regulations for charitable contributions. We know many parishioners do not want the statements because either they do not need them for tax purposes, they take a standard deduction, or they have copies of their cancelled checks to support their IRS deduction; therefore, we only issue requested statements.

I imagine for Christmas some child received a large, pink, teddy bear knitted sweater made with much love from an elderly family member (Ralphie anyone?).

Rita, one of our parishioners, is a huge dog lover and an amazing creator with a pair of needles. She knitted Cragly a Christmas sweater that has the Nativity scene on the back, with a shepherd and a black dog reverently kneeling at the manger holding baby Jesus. I absolutely love it. Rita is truly gifted.

Part of why I love the sweater - other than keeping my girl stylish and warm - is that when Cragly walks around in it – she becomes a living witness to Christmas, to Jesus, and an opportunity to share with others about Jesus and a God who loves us so much as to send us his only son.

She’s a good looking dog, but now, even more so, in her Christmas sweater.

Today, St. Paul tells us, “Put on, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must also do. And over all these put on love, that is the bond of perfection ... and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.”

When we intentionally “put on,” like putting on a sweater, compassion, kindness, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, thankfulness, and let Christ dwell in us, we are better witnesses to him in the world. These things take intention to put on.

This is the time of year for the whole world to know that God has come. He’ll know it thru us, if we put on Christ. Doing so blesses our families, our neighbors, and reverberates out to all.

Aren’t these things we truly need at Christmas? May God bless you.

In Christ,

Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make our Church beautiful for Christmas, to help celebrate the birth of Jesus and his coming at Mass – our choirs, musicians, servers, sacristans, eucharistic ministers. Thank you to everyone who welcomed strangers and warmly extended the sign of peace and were patient in the parking lot. St. Martha’s rocks.

(Go Vikings! Great win over the Packers [I hope we won. This is being written before it. If not, I’ll be eating my words and Monsignor Bill will have had a Merry Christmas.])

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family and continue our celebration of Christmas during this “Octave of Christmas”. As we celebrate today, I reflect on my own family’s experiences this Christmas. There is nothing quite like the joy and excitement of children at Christmas. As a mom of three children ages 10 (just about to turn 11), 9, and 7, one of my greatest joys is experiencing the Christmas season with my children. From teaching them hymns and the traditions of our faith through our Children’s Choir program here at the church, to seeing two of them perform in a local production of “Scrooge”, to lighting our Advent candles, and preparing for the coming of Jesus at Christmas by watching movies together and going on excursions to find the best Christmas lights—it really is a magical time of year. I’ve found that baking our Christmas cookies after Christmas Day during this “octave of Christmas” helps us extend our celebration of Jesus’ birth in our home. Alongside our family’s preparation for and celebration of Christmas, I have thoroughly enjoyed preparing the children of our parish through the Children’s Choir for the coming of Christmas as well. The children will sing again on the Feast of the Epiphany (next Sunday, Jan 5th) at 9 AM Mass. Rehearsals for this group will begin again on Tuesday, January 7th from 5:45-6:30 PM in the Church. Consider having your child (grades 1-8) join us. It is a blessing to work with the children and we have a lot of fun while learning the music and about our faith!

“To maintain a joyful family requires much from both the parents and the children. Each member of the family has to become, in a special way, the servant of the others.” – Pope St. John Paul II

Faith at Home: In the home, the “domestic church,” children are formed to love God and one another, to pray, to forgive, to share ideas and opinions, and to serve each other. Without discipline, children may become self-centered and have a sense of entitlement. Parents are expected to do the difficult work of forming saints, both their children and one another.

Formed: Need some advice on Catholic parenting? Listen to the programs on Formed: “Pass It On” and/or “Me and My House.”

The New Year: Along with the usual resolutions we make at the beginning of each year, include one or two that will benefit your spiritual life. Some suggestions: read a short section of Sacred Scripture daily, read a Catholic spiritual book, begin praying the rosary as a family, begin to use Formed and learn more about your faith on your schedule. If you need some guidance, ask Father Dave, or contact the religious education office.

Respect Life

We are preparing to attend the March for Life on Friday, Jan. 24, 2020, in Washington, DC. Bus transportation will be provided. Please call the office if you have any questions, or to let us know that you'll be attending.

New Year: Happy New Year to everyone. Thank you for your support this past year. I’m looking forward to a new year of ministry and introducing some new things. March for Life: The annual March for Life will be held Friday, Jan. 24. The bus will leave from here at St. Martha’s at 7:00 am. Father Dave will celebrate Mass at 6:30 am before the bus leaves. Students are welcome & encouraged to come. Special thanks to Angela O’Dowd of the Respect Life Committee. The Rosary Altar Society has generously offered to pay the bus fare for youth attendees. Please contact me for info. Diocesan Youth Conference: The annual Diocesan Youth Conference will be held Saturday, February 8, 2020 at Donovan Catholic High School in Toms River, beginning at 10:00 am and concluding after Mass, celebrated by Bishop O’Connell at 5:00 pm. This is open to all teens from grades 8-12. The theme in this special year of youth is “Inspired-You are the light of the world,” inspired by the Book of Matthew, Chapter 5, Verse 14. This year’s DYC will remind attendees that we are all called to live inspired with the knowledge that we are loved unconditionally by God and given many gifts and talents to be His light in the world. There will be a service project that day to prepare a “box of joy” that will be sent to children in a third world country. More details to come. An invitation video will be released soon.

Have you ever Registered with the Parish? If you have ever wondered “Am I a registered parishioner at St Martha?,” here is a simple way to know: did you receive a Christmas envelope and Advent schedule in the mail on behalf of the Church of St Martha. If you did, you are registered; if you did not, this is an indication that we do not have you as a registered parishioner. There are many ways to register. Stop into the office and fill out a registration form, go to our website and download the registration form and drop it off during business hours, mail it in to us, e-mail it to [email protected] or drop it in the office mail slot when you are here for Mass.
